Abstract:A dual-wavelength bright-dark pulse pair has been experimentally demonstrated in a mode-locked fiber laser based on thulium-doped fiber (TDF). By appropriately adjusting the polarization state, the dual-wavelength bright-dark pulse pairs with fundamental frequency of 20.56 MHz can be successfully obtained under the pump power ranging from 150 to 500 mW. The largest pulse energy is 2.84 nJ, and the conversion efficiency exceeds 10%. The generation mechanism of the bright-dark pulse pair in the cavity is primarily attributed to the cross-phase modulation (XPM) induced by the interaction of the bright soliton and dark soliton locating at different wavebands. Additionally, the dynamics of the bright-dark pulse pair is influenced by the polarization effect. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a bright-dark pulse pair laser employing TDF as the saturable absorber (SA). Its superiority for mode-locking has been fully proved, making it enormous potential in the fields of ultrafast lasers and nonlinear optics. Furthermore, this pulsed laser may offer a novel path for the development of high-power fiber lasers.

Abstract:We investigate the generation of bright-dark solitons in erbium-doped mode-locked fiber lasers based on ZrTe 2 as saturable absorber. By adjusting the pump power and polarization state appropriately, three dual-wavelength mode-locked operations, namely bright soliton, bright-dark soliton pairs, and dark soliton are acquired. At pump power of 230 mW, bright solitons with central wavelengths of 1567.3 and 1568.1 nm, corresponding to 3-dB bandwidths of 0.15 and 0.2 nm, are obtained. For the bright-dark soliton pairs operation, the maximum average output power and largest single-pulse energy are 7.2 mW and 0.69 nJ, respectively. In addition, stable dark solitons with pump power of 300 mW at the fundamental rate of 10.47 MHz are achieved. Our research results indicate that ZrTe 2 can operate as excellent saturable absorber for bright-dark soliton generation and will promote the development of ultrafast optics.

Dark Soliton Trains Generation From Self-Mode-Locking Fiber Laser With An Ultra-Long Ring Cavity

Abstract:We demonstrated a multi-dark soliton train generated from self-mode-locking ultra-long ring cavity fiber laser. The fiber laser used 10m double-clad Yb-doped fiber as gain medium, and used a polarization independent isolator to ensure the light propagation in one direction. The ring cavity of the laser was designed without any intra-cavity polarization controlling component. The cavity length is 1300 meters by insetting single mode fiber. When the pump power was increased to 2.75W, the multi-dark soliton trains were obtained. The stable pulse train has a repetition rate of 153.9 kHz corresponding to the cavity length. The number of sub-pulse continues to decrease during the increase of the incident pumping power until 3.39W. Stable three peaks appear in the spectra of our fiber laser due to the absence of the polarization controller in the cavity. The maximum peak wavelength locates around 1083.9nm with the 3dB bandwidth of 1.4nm. There are two sidebands with the central wavelength of 1086.3nm and 1090.1nm with a lower intensity. The occurrence of multi-dark soliton pulses train is relevant to the self-mode-locked operation at the cavity with a large amount of normal dispersion and accumulated nonlinearity.
Harmonic Mode-Locking in Bidirectional Domain-Wall Soliton Fiber Lasers

Abstract:We report on the first experimental observation of passively harmonic mode-locking (HML) in a bidirectional domain-wall dark-soliton fiber laser. The domain-wall solitons (DWSs) are characterized, in which, the strong coupling between the two directions takes great responsibility for the generation. By appropriately altering the polarization state in the cavity, the stable fundamental domain-wall solitons and HML states could be obtained and switched with increasing the pump power. In our experiment, the repetition rate can be tunable from the fundamental mode locking of 2.96MHz up to eighth-order HML of 23.68MHz when the pump power is increased from 120 to 542.5mW. Importantly, this HML operation of dark-pulse DWSs confirms that the DWSs are the intrinsic feature of the mode- locked lasers, as well as the conventional bright solitons. This work could provide a new perspective to the understanding of the formation and transformation of dark solitons, which may also find great potential applications in fiber sensing and future optical communication systems.
TaSe2-based mode-locked fiber laser with four switchable operating states

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted considerable attention in electronics and photonics. Tantalum diselenides (TaSe2) as a member of TMDs has been employed for field effect transistors and all-optical switching, and its nonlinear optical response has also been investigated. However, the applications of TaSe2 in ultrafast fiber lasers have not been exploited. Here, TaSe2 deposited on D-shaped fiber is used as saturable absorber (SA) in Er-doped fiber laser, and four switchable operating states (bright solitons, dark solitons, bright-dark soliton pairs and their HML counterparts, as well as bright-dark-bright soliton pairs) are realized successfully. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first presentation of a mode-locked fiber laser with the TaSe2-based SA, and also the first study of bright and dark soliton properties of a TaSe2-based fiber laser. It is foreseeable that TaSe2 will become an appealing candidate for bright and dark soliton fiber lasers.

Abstract:We report experimental observations performed using a net anomalous dispersion Er-doped fiber ring laser without polarization-selective elements, highlighting the domain-wall solitary pulses generated under the incoherent polarization coupling. By adjusting the pump power and the polarization state appropriately, bright and dark solitons can stably co-exist in the cavity, both centered at 1562.16 nm with a 3-dB spectral width of ∼ 0.15 nm and a repetition rate of 3.83 MHz. Moreover, the 0.8 mm long thulium-doped fiber (TDF) facilitated the mode-locking and self-starting of the laser. This is the first demonstration of a laser being used to generate bright and dark solitons synchronously while using TDF as the saturable absorber (SA). Except possessing the all-fiber structure, the laser exhibits good stability, which may have a significant influence on improvement of the pulse-laser design, and may broaden practical applications in optical sensing, optical communication, and soliton multiplexed systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of soliton and dissipative soliton in an ultrafast thulium (Tm) doped fiber laser based upon cross-phase modulation (XPM) induced mode-locking. The mode-locking is realized by periodically modulating the 2-µm signal through XPM that is activated by an injected 1.5-µm pulsed laser. Such a mechanism enables the laser to be mode-locked in various operation regimes without any real or artificial saturable absorbers. Thanks to the XPM pulling effect, the wavelength of the Tm-doped fiber laser can be tuned by adjusting the repetition frequency of the 1.5-µm pulsed laser. The maximum tuning ranges achieved in this work for the soliton and dissipative soliton regimes are respectively 11 nm and 15 nm. The outcomes of this work not only provide a continuously and controllably wavelength-tunable ultrafast laser but also offer a passively synchronized dual-color fiber laser system, which is promised for many important applications such as Raman spectroscopy, nonlinear frequency conversion systems, and multi-color pump-probe systems.

Abstract:A dual-wavelength dissipative soliton resonance thulium-doped fiber laser based on nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) has been demonstrated. In this laser, mode-locking is achieved based on equivalent saturation absorption of the NOLM, while the dual-wavelength operation is attributed to the online birefringent fiber filter composed of a polarizer and a section of polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF). The wavelength spacing of dual-wavelength spectrum can be adjusted through changing the PMF length, and the central wavelengths can be tuned through rotating the polarization controllers. It is also found that at the two central wavelengths of the dual-wavelength pulse, switchable single wavelength mode-locked pulse can be generated. In addition, noise-like pulses with broadband spectra can be generated, when two kinds of mode-locking mechanisms conflict. The dual-wavelength dissipative soliton resonance thulium-doped fiber laser has important potential applications in the laser detection, sensing and other fields. Its rich dynamics also provides a system platform for basic research on laser physics.

Abstract:Thulium-doped fiber (TDF) lasers are considered ideal platforms for studying 2 mu m passively mode-locked fiber lasers. However, previous research primarily focused on soliton generation in TDF lasers, overlooking the switching and transformation between solitons in various states. This paper investigates the switching and transformation of multi-state solitons in TDF lasers based on nonlinear polarization rotation. By properly adjusting the pump power and polarization controller, we observe the switching and transformation between conventional soliton and bound state soliton, between soliton clusters and dual-wavelength soliton. The results were achieved using a simple structure (utilizing only one polarization controller) that exhibited superior repeatability and simplicity compared to a complex configuration (two polarization controllers). The experimental observation of the switching and transformation of multi-state solitons not only provides a deeper understanding of the dynamics of solitons in TDF lasers but also contributes to the design of multifunctional fiber lasers. This is significant for promoting the application of 2 mu m fiber lasers.

Abstract:The tunable-wavelength broadband spectrum dissipative soliton (DS) is demonstrated in Yb-doped mode-locked laser using an all-fiber structure saturable absorber (SA), that is, graded index multimode fiber (GIMF)-step index multimode fiber (SIMF)-GIMF with 4.70% modulation depth and 4.55 mW saturation power. Increasing pump power alters intra-cavity balance between loss and gain and nonlinear and dispersion, causing wavelength adjustment and spectrum broadening. The center wavelength shifts towards shorter wavelength with rang of 1037.77-1024.83 nm, corresponding 3-dB bandwidth widens from 6.10 to 9.23 nm and pulse width narrows from 23.80 to 13.38 ps. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is 71.2 dB at the repetition rate of 14.63 MHz. The GIMFSIMF-GIMF structure has a huge potential to serve as both SA and filter component for the tunable-wavelength broadband spectrum Yb-doped mode-locked fiber laser (MLFL), which is favorable for developing the field of nonlinear microscopy and material processing.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a passively mode-locked thulium/holmium co-doped fiber (THDF) laser based on the combination of the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) and the semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). The wavelength tunable range is 42nm in the single pulse mode-locked state. In an all-anomalous-dispersion cavity, dual-wavelength soliton pulses centered around at 1894.15 nm and 1938.4 nm with 3 dB bandwidths of 0.47 nm and 1.1 nm are observed. By adjusting polarization controllers (PC), multi-pulse mode locking and harmonic mode locking (HML) are also obtained.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 2080 nm long-wavelength mode-locked thulium (Tm)-doped fiber laser operating in the dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) regime. The compact all-fiber dumbbell-shaped laser is simply constructed by a 50/50 fiber loop mirror (FLM), a 10/90 FLM, and a piece of large-gain Tm-doped double-clad fiber pumped by a 793 nm laser diode. The 10/90 FLM is not only used as an output mirror, but also acts as a periodical saturable absorber for initiating DSR mode locking. The stable DSR pulses are generated at the center wavelength as long as 2080.4 nm, and the pulse duration can be tunable from 780 to 3240 ps as the pump power is increased. The maximum average output power is 1.27 W, corresponding to a pulse energy of 290 nJ and a nearly constant peak power of 93 W. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the longest wavelength for DSR operation in a mode-locked fiber laser.

Abstract:Passively mode locked fiber lasers are excellent platforms for soliton generation. Here, multi-state switchable behaviors in a slightly normal dispersion mode-locked fiber laser are experimentally demonstrated with an identical configuration. A saturable absorber based on single-wall carbon nanotube is served as mode-locking device and an intrinsic birefringence spectral filtering is employed as a tunable inline filter. Consequently, with properly modifying pumping powers and orientations of polarization controller paddles, the operation regimes of the proposed laser could be reversibly switched between dissipative solitons and amplifier similaritons, and the characteristics of intermediate states are recorded. Tunable dissipative solitons with a tuning range of 38 nm and noise-like pulses could also alternatively be generated. This multi-state behavior switching could be attributed to the strong filtering caused by the limited gain bandwidth under strong pump strength. The experimental observations of these multi-state switchable transitions may offer insight into the pulse regime dynamics in the near-zero dispersion region and offer flexibility in multi-functional designs of the laser configuration, which would enable innovations in nonlinear optics and its applications.

Abstract:We report on the observation of dispersion-managed (DM) dark soliton emission in a net-normal dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser. We found experimentally that dispersion management could not only reduce the pump threshold for the dark soliton formation in a fiber laser, but also stabilize the single dark soliton evolution in the cavity. Numerical simulations have also confirmed the DM dark soliton formation in a fiber laser.

Abstract:The bright-dark soliton pair in a passively mode-locked fiber laser based on the topological insulator: Bi2Se3/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film in the proper polarization state and the pump power is experimentally demonstrated. By carefully adjusting the pump power and the polarization state, the bright-dark soliton pair could be easily observed. Furthermore, it is found experimentally that the formation of the bright-dark soliton pair is mainly due to the polarization effect based on the high nonlinear effect of topological insulator: Bi2Se3/PVA film. We also demonstrate that the pulse shape of the bright-dark soliton pair can be affected by the total net cavity dispersion in the fiber laser.

Abstract:In this paper, we have experimentally investigated different operational states of a partial multimode Er-doped spatiotemporal mode-locked (STML) fiber laser. The STML is enabled by nonlinear multimode interference (NL-MMI) effect from the partial multimode cavity structure. It is found that by adjusting the multimode polarization controller (PC) and the pump power, the STML dark pulses, bright pulses, as well as the polarization domain wall solitons can all be obtained, alternatively. The fused-tapered multimode coupler is responsible for the dark pulses generation via the enhanced modal cross-phase coupling. It is believed that the present findings can offer an important insight into the spatiotemporal dynamics of the STML solitons.

Abstract:We present an all-fiber bidirectional passively mode-locked soliton laser with what we believe is a novel cavity configuration. Using a four-port circulator, we incorporate two different semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) into the laser cavity, which enables bidirectional mode locking. The laser allows the generation of two independent countercirculating mode-locked pulse trains, each with an individual fundamental repetition rate that can be adjusted by varying the SESAM pigtail length. Two countercirculating pulse trains with repetition rates of 21.3 and 15.2 MHz are obtained simultaneously. By controlling the intracavity loss imposed on these two pulse trains, either one of the two pulse trains can be switched on or off. The bidirectional operation with other repetition rates is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Recently, few-layer tungsten disulfide (WS2), as a shining 2D material, has been discovered to possess both the saturable absorption ability and large nonlinear refractive index. Here, we demonstrate versatile soliton pulses in a passively mode-locked fiber laser with a WS2-deposited microfiber. The few-layer WS2 is prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation method and transferred onto a microfiber by the optical deposition method. Study found, the WS2-deposited microfiber can operate simultaneously as a mode-locker and a high-nonlinear device. In experiment, by further inserting the WS2 device into the fiber laser, besides the dual-wavelength soliton, noise-like soliton pulse, conventional soliton and its harmonic form are obtained by properly adjusting the pump strength and the polarization states. For the dual-wavelength soliton pulses and noise-like pulse, the maximum output power of 14.2 mW and pulse energy of 4.74 nJ is obtained, respectively. In addition, we also achieve the maximum harmonic number (135) of conventional soliton, corresponding to a repetition rate of ∼497.5 MHz. Our study shows clearly that WS2-deposited microfiber can be as a high-nonlinear photonic device for studying a plenty of nonlinear soliton phenomena.
