Abstract:We report on the generation of a mid-infrared (mid-IR) frequency comb with a maximum average output power of 250 mW and tunability in the 2.7-4.0 mu m region. The approach is based on a single-stage difference frequency generation (DFG) starting from a compact Yb-doped fiber laser system. The repetition rate of the near-infrared (NIR) comb is locked at 75 MHz. The phase noise of the repetition rate in the offset-free mid-IR comb system is measured and analyzed. Except for the intrinsic of NIR comb, environmental noise at low frequency and quantum noise at high frequency from the amplifier chain and nonlinear spectral broadening are the main noise sources of broadening the linewidth of comb teeth, which limits the precision of mid-IR dual-comb spectroscopy.

Abstract:In this Letter, we report an octave-spanning mid-infrared (MIR) comb generation with a difference frequency generation (DFG) approach optimized for aperiodically poled Mg:LiNbO3 and nonlinear spectral broadening. An Er:fiber comb is delivered to two branches and amplified in an Yb:fiber and an Er:fiber amplifier, respectively. We demonstrate that the two-branch DFG can yield the spectrum tuned over an octave in a fan-out periodically poled lithium niobate. Thus, we obtain an optimized poling period profile and design the aperiodically poled Mg:LiNbO3. The results demonstrate that broadband combs can be generated in the MIR atmospheric window.

Abstract:Microresonator-based optical frequency combs are broadband light sources consisting of equally spaced and coherent narrow lines, which are extremely promising for applications in molecular spectroscopy and sensing in the mid-infrared (MIR) spectral region. There are still great challenges in exploring how to improve materials for microresonator fabrication, extend spectral bandwidth of parametric combs, and realize fully stabilized soliton MIR frequency combs. Here, we present an effective scheme for broadband MIR optical frequency comb generation in a MgF2 crystalline microresonator pumped by the quantum cascade laser. The spectral evolution dynamics of the MIR Kerr frequency comb is numerically investigated, revealing the formation mechanism of the microresonator soliton comb via scanning the pump-resonance detuning. We also experimentally implement the modulation instability state MIR frequency comb generation in MgF2 resonators covering from 3380 nm to 7760 nm. This work proceeds microresonator-based comb technology toward a miniaturization MIR spectroscopic device that provides potential opportunities in many fields such as fundamental physics and metrology.
Amplification Assisted Optical Parametric Oscillator in the Mid-Infrared Region

Abstract:We demonstrate a high efficiency mid-infrared laser source based on optical parametric oscillator (OPO) assisted by an intracavity optical parametric amplification (OPA). The OPA-assisted-OPO scheme was realized in one piece of commensurable dual-periodic superlattice in which the signal light generated from the OPO process serves as the pump light for the OPA process. A maximum output power of 508 mW at 3.92 μm was achieved under a pump power of 2.85 W at 1.064 μm. The pump-to-idler conversion efficiency is 17.8% and the slope efficiency is 23.8%, and the enhancements of them are 58.9% and 67.6%, respectively, comparing with the standard OPO scheme.

Abstract:Midinfrared (MIR) optical frequency combs are of great significance as broadband coherent light sources used in extensive areas such as coherent communications and molecule detections. Conventional MIR combs are usually restricted in size and power, while most microcombs are focused in the near-infrared (NIR) region because of the limited accessible Q-factor of microrings and the poor performances of available pumps. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate the simultaneous generation of a broadband MIR and NIR comb in a GaP microring with an additive waveguide. The achieved octave-spanning (1890-4050 nm) MIRmicrocomb at a lowpump power of 34 mW can be effectively converted to the second-harmonic NIR comb covering 1120-1520 nm with separate dispersion optimization of the ring cavity and straight waveguide. The proposed system has the advantage of simple structure and lowpower threshold, which could find potential in highly integrated MIRoptical sources and related applications. Abstract:The generation of high-peak-power, few-cycle mid-infrared (MIR) pulses using coherent beam combination and nonlinear pulse compression techniques simultaneously is demonstrated. The two pulses, with identical pulse energy of 2.8 mJ and pulse duration of 160 fs, are coherently combined at the input end of a krypton-filled hollow-core fiber (HCF), and then the bandwidth of the combined pulse is broadened to near an optical octave due to strong phase modulations, and the temporal width is compressed into a few-cycle regime. Finally, a 2.7 mJ, 22.9 fs, 20 Hz laser at 4 μm can be obtained, and the pulse peak power is greatly enhanced compared with that of conventional single-channel optical parametric chirped pulse-amplification systems. Furthermore, the peak power generated from this system has the prospect of further scaling up through use of more channels of coherent combination, which can pave a way to generate higher peak power ultra-intense MIR pulses for strong-field physics.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (MIR) microcomb provides a new way into the "molecular fingerprint" region. However, it remains rather a challenge to realize the broadband mode-locked soliton microcomb, which is often limited by the performance of available MIR pump sources and coupling devices. Here, we propose an effective approach towards broadband MIR soliton microcombs generation via a direct pump in the near-infrared (NIR) region, through full utilization of the second- and third-order nonlinearities in a thin-film lithium niobate microresonator. The optical parametric oscillation process contributes to conversion from the pump at 1550 nm to the signal around 3100 nm, and the four-wave mixing effect promotes spectrum expansion and mode-locking process. While the second-harmonic and sum-frequency generation effects facilitate simultaneous emission of the NIR comb teeth. Both the continuous wave and pulse pump sources with relatively low power can support a MIR soliton with a bandwidth over 600 nm and a concomitant NIR microcomb with a bandwidth of 100 nm. This work can provide a promising solution for broadband MIR microcombs by breaking through the limitation of available MIR pump sources, and can deepen the understanding of the physical mechanism of the quadratic soliton assisted by the Kerr effect.

Abstract:A high-power ultra-broadband frequency comb covering the spectral range from ultraviolet to infrared was generated directly by nonlinear frequency conversion of a multi-stage high-power fiber comb amplifier. The 1030-nm infrared spectral fraction of a broadband Ti:sapphire femtosecond frequency comb was power-scaled up to 100 W average power by using a large-mode-area fiber chirped-pulse amplifier. We obtained a frequency-doubled green comb at 515 nm and frequency-quadrupled ultraviolet pulses at 258 nm with the average power of 12.8 and 1.62 W under the input infrared power of 42.2 W, respectively. The carrier envelope phase stabilization was accomplished with an ultra-narrow line-width of 1.86 mHz and a quite low accumulated phase jitter of 0.41 rad, corresponding to a timing jitter of 143 as.
Simple approach to broadband mid-infrared pulse generation with a mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser

Abstract:Broadband mid-infrared (MIR) molecular spectroscopy demands a bright and broadband light source in the molecular fingerprint region. To this end, intra-pulse difference frequency generation (IDFG) has shown excellent properties among various techniques. Although IDFG systems pumped with 1.5- or 2-µm ultrashort pulsed lasers have been extensively developed, few systems have been demonstrated with 1-µm lasers, which use bulky 100-W-class high-power Yb thin-disk lasers. In this work, we demonstrate a simple and robust approach of 1-µm-pumped broadband IDFG with a conventional mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser. We first generate 3.3-W, 12.1-fs ultrashort pulses at 50 MHz by a simple combination of spectral broadening with a short single-mode fiber and pulse compression with chirped mirrors. Then, we use them for pumping a thin orientation-patterned gallium phosphide crystal, generating 1.2-mW broadband MIR pulses with the -20-dB bandwidth of 480 cm-1 in the fingerprint region (760-1240 cm-1, 8.1-13.1 µm). The 1-µm-based IDFG system allows for additional generations of ultrashort pulses in the ultraviolet and visible regions, enabling, for example, 50-MHz-level high-repetition-rate vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy or pump-probe spectroscopy.

Abstract:Combining the configurations of collinear and small-angle noncollinear phase-matching, a mid-infrared (MIR) femtosecond optical parametric amplifier (OPA) with extended tunability is proposed and demonstrated. A tuning range from 2.0 µm to 4.7 µm is demonstrated by a two-stage LiNbO3-based femtosecond OPA, which well exceeds the typical tuning range reported so far. MIR femtosecond pulses with energy up to 30 µJ are obtained.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a simple configuration for mid-infrared (MIR) frequency comb generation in quasi-phase-matched lithium niobate waveguides using the cascaded-χ<sup>(2)</sup> nonlinearity. With nanojoule-scale pulses from an Er:fiber laser, we observe octave-spanning supercontinuum in the near-infrared with dispersive wave generation in the 2.5-3 μm region and intrapulse difference frequency generation in the 4-5 μm region. By engineering the quasi-phase-matched grating profiles, tunable, narrowband MIR and broadband MIR spectra are both observed in this geometry. Finally, we perform numerical modeling using a nonlinear envelope equation, which shows good quantitative agreement with the experiment-and can be used to inform waveguide designs to tailor the MIR frequency combs. Our results identify a path to a simple single-branch approach to mid-infrared frequency comb generation in a compact platform using commercial Er:fiber technology.

Abstract:We demonstrate ultra-flat and high-efficient mid-infrared supercontinuum (MIR SC) generation in indium fluoride (InF 3 ) fiber with output average power of 9.9 W, power conversion efficiency of 67.8 % and 3 dB- spectrum width of > 1570 nm. It is pumped by amplified 2 μm noise-like pulses and generated in a piece of 10 m InF 3 fiber with core diameters of 9.5 μm. The 2 μm noise-like pulses is realized by nonlinear amplifying loop mirror mode-locking technique and amplified by two-stage amplifiers with pulse repetition rate of 1.513 MHz and 3-dB pulse envelope width of 2.2 ns. To further increase efficiency, the InF 3 fiber is spliced directly to the pigtail of main amplifier with 92.47 % coupling efficiency, which is in good agreement with 92 % theoretical result of fundamental-mode coupling efficiency. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this work achieves the flattest (3 dB spectral coverage of 2120 - 3690 nm) and highest efficiency (67.8%) in MIR SC seeded by 2 μm pulses.

Abstract:An active spectrum tailoring scheme is proposed and demonstrated in this letter to enhance the energy distribution further towards the long wavelength side. By cascading Dy-doped fluoride fiber to the Er-doped ZBLAN fiber, the residual spectral peak at ~2.8 μm was eliminated, and a spectrally-flat, 3.5-W MIR-SC with power ratio beyond 3 μm up to 91.2% was achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate mid-infrared (MIR) frequency combs at 10 GHz repetition rate via intra-pulse difference-frequency generation (DFG) in quasi-phase-matched nonlinear media. Few-cycle pump pulses (≲15fs, 100 pJ) from a near-infrared electro-optic frequency comb are provided via nonlinear soliton-like compression in photonic-chip silicon-nitride waveguides. Subsequent intra-pulse DFG in periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides yields MIR frequency combs in the 3.1-4.8 µm region, while orientation-patterned gallium phosphide provides coverage across 7-11 µm. Cascaded second-order nonlinearities simultaneously provide access to the carrier-envelope-offset frequency of the pump source via in-line f-2f nonlinear interferometry. The high-repetition rate MIR frequency combs introduced here can be used for condensed phase spectroscopy and applications such as laser heterodyne radiometry.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (MIR) frequency combs based on integrated photonic microresonators (micro combs) have attracted increasing attention in chip-scale spectroscopy due to their high spectral resolution and broadband wavelength coverage. However, up to date, there are no perfect solutions for the effective generation of MIR micro combs because of the lack of proper MIR materials as the core and cladding of the integrated microresonators, thereby hindering accurate and flexible dispersion engineering. Here, we have firstly demonstrated a MIR micro comb generation covering from 6.94 μm to 12.04 μm based on a sandwich-integrated all-ChG microresonator composed of GeAsTeSe and GeSbSe as the core and GeSbS as cladding. The novel sandwich microresonator is proposed to achieve a symmetrically uniform distribution of the mode field in the microresonator core, precise dispersion engineering, and low optical loss, which features a wide transmission window, high Kerr nonlinearity, and hybrid-fabrication flexibility on a silicon wafer. A MIR Kerr frequency comb with a 5.1 μm bandwidth has been numerically demonstrated, assisted by dispersive waves. Additionally, a feasible fabrication scheme is proposed to realize the on-demand ChG microresonators. These demonstrations characterize the advantages of integrated ChG photonic devices in MIR nonlinear photonics and their potential applications in MIR spectroscopy.
Design of on-chip mid-IR frequency comb with ultra-low power pump in near-IR

Abstract:Broadband mid-infrared frequency combs are of particular interest to mid-infrared spectroscopy due to their ruler-like precise discrete comb teeth. However, the state-of-the-art mid-infrared frequency combs are usually limited to low integration level and high pump power as a result of the conventional way of mid-infrared frequency comb generation--producing a near-infrared frequency comb first and then convert it to mid-infrared regime through a nonlinear process. Here, we theoretically investigate two integrated designs for generating mid-infrared frequency combs with ultra-low power pump based on the lithium-niobate on insulator (LNOI) platform. Utilizing periodically poled lithium-niobate (PPLN) waveguides and microring electro-optic phase modulators, we switch the conventional order of comb generation and nonlinear conversion. This paradigm shift significantly improves the conversion efficiency of mid-infrared frequency comb generation and obviates the need for femtosecond lasers. Our theoretical results predict that a broadband mid-infrared frequency comb around 4.3 µm with nanowatt-power-level comb teeth can be produced from continuous-wave (CW) inputs whose power is lower than 5 mW with an ultra-high conversion efficiency above 1800 %/W. Our designs of mid-infrared frequency comb have high controllability, flexibility and integration level, enabling the miniaturization of mid-infrared spectrometers.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs (OFCs) at Mid-Infrared (MIR) wavelengths are essential for applications in precise spectroscopy, gas sensing and molecular fingerprinting, because of its revolutionary precision in both wavelength and frequency domain. The microresonator-based OFCs make a further step towards practical applications by including such high precision in a compact and cost-effective package. However, dispersion engineering is still a challenge for the conventional chi-3 micro-ring resonators and a MIR pump laser is required. Here we develop a different platform of a chi-2 optical superlattice box resonator to generate MIR OFC by optical parametric down conversion. With near-material-limited quality factor of 2.0*10^7, broadband MIR OFC can be generated with over 250 nm span around 2060 nm, where only a common near-infrared laser is necessary as pump. The fine teeth spacing corresponds to a measurable radio frequency beat note at 1.566 GHz, and also results in a fine spectroscopy resolution. Its linewidth is measured to be 6.1 kHz, which reveals a low comb noise that agrees well with the clean temporal waveforms. With high output power of over 370 mW, such MIR OFC is capable for long distance sensing and ranging applications.

Abstract:We report a fiber self-similar-amplification (SSA) comb system that delivers a 250-MHz, 109-W, 42-fs pulse train with a 10-dB spectral width of 85 nm at 1056 nm. A pair of grisms is employed to compensate the group velocity dispersion and third-order dispersion of pre-amplified pulses for facilitating a self-similar evolution and a self-phase modulation (SPM). Moreover, we analyze the stabilities and noise characteristics of both the locked carrier envelope phase and the repetition rate, verifying the stability of the generated high-power comb. The demonstration of the SSA comb at such high power proves the feasibility of the SPM-based low-noise ultrashort comb.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (MIR) optical frequency combs (OFCs) are ideal light sources for precision metrology and can find extensive applications, especially in molecular spectroscopy and gas detection. Here the generation of mode-locked MIR frequency comb in a LiNbO$_3$ microring through optimized slot-waveguide design is proposed. Such microcomb can span over four-fifths of an octave (ranging from $sim$2810 nm to $sim$4630 nm) with pump power as low as 50 mW, which can be applied to the 2f-3f self-referencing for fully stabilization and helpful to monolithic integration of the whole system. Further investigations on complex dynamical processes for the microcomb generation suggest that the intracavity soliton drifting caused by the third-order dispersion could be compensated by the self-steepening effect as introducing an additional drift through proper dispersion tailoring. This work could facilitate the low-threshold broadband MIR frequency comb generation technique, as well as provide a way to realize more delicate control of soliton microcombs in both temporal and spectral domain.

Abstract:We demonstrate mid-infrared (mid-IR) supercontinuum generation (SCG) with instantaneous bandwidth from 2.2 to 5 μm at 40 dB below the peak, covering the wavelength range desirable for molecular spectroscopy and numerous other applications. The SCG occurs in a tapered As(2)S(3) fiber prepared by in-situ tapering and is pumped by femtosecond pulses from the subharmonic of a mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser. Interference with a narrow linewidth c.w. laser verifies that the coherence properties of the near-IR frequency comb have been preserved through these cascaded nonlinear processes.
