Abstract:A new algorithm for calculating computer-generated holograms (CGH's) is proposed. The hologram fringe pattern data is stored in the computer image format, and transmitted to a transmission-type liquid crystal panel by the video signal. It will be used for the real-time three-dimension imaging by holographic reconstruction. Questions of the effect of the solution, the contrast ratio of the liquid crystal panel and the modulation due to the gray-level of the hologram image are addressed. Therefore the distribution of the amplitude and phase on the holographic plane is determinated by confirming image plane distribution considering the above effects. The reconstructed data is made as similar as possible to the source data by the optimal code. Experimental results,and value the quality of the reconstructed image are given.

Abstract:Random phases with all frequency components lead to excessive diffusions of object waves, resulting in loss of detail in holographic reconstructions. In this study, the effects of random phases with various frequencies on holographic reconstruction results are evaluated. The optimized maximal value of the random phases is analyzed. Utilizing the evaluation results, we propose a frequency-based optimized random phase that reduces the unfavorable effect of the insufficient dynamic range of computer-generated holograms and prevents excessive diffusions by traditional random phases. Utilizing the optimized random phase, which improves the reconstruction quality significantly, we can commendably reconstruct both contours and details.

Abstract:In this paper the research of the real-time three-dimensional holographic imaging system which uses liquid crystal panels to display the computer generated Fresnel holograms for reconstructed 3D images is described. The reconstructed effects are related to each step of the process and the characteristics of the devices. The contradictions between the quantization of holographic numerical data and the properties of the display device are the important reasons for the reconstruction errors. A new algorithm for calculating point holograms is proposed for reducing the reconstruction errors. Finally the original experimental result is given.

Abstract:Holographic techniques enable precise laser manipulation, but suffer from two considerable limitations: speckle and deterioration of axial distribution. Here, we propose a cylindrical quadratic phase (CQP) method with temporal focusing (TF) to generate speckle-free holographic illumination with high axial resolution. TF-CQP utilizes a superposed cylindrical phase as the initial guess to iteratively optimize phase hologram, realizing speckle-free holographic reconstruction on the target focal plane and eliminating secondary focus on the defocused planes. TF-CQP further disperses defocused beams symmetrically by a blazed grating, placed conjugate to the focal plane, which enhances axial confinement. Simulation and experimental results show that TF-CQP reconstructs speckle-free illumination with arbitrary shapes and <10 µm axial resolution. Compared to TF-GS (Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm), widely used in holographic optogenetics, TF-CQP shows increased uniformity of 200% and improved modulation efficiency of 32.33% for parallel holographic illumination, as well as a 10% increment in axial resolution.

Abstract:Weighted iterative algorithm is presented for generating phase holograms with high-quality reconstruction. The reconstruction plane is partitioned into two parts where different constraint strategies are addressed during the iteration process. Signal region of the reconstruction plane is constrained directly according to the amplitude distribution of the target pattern, whereas non-signal region is constrained indirectly by total energy control of the hologram plane based on the energy conservation principle. The weighted iterative algorithm can improve the reconstruction quality by broadening the optimizing space of the calculated phase distribution.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new method that reconstructs the information of specimen by using random phase shift step in digital holographic microscopy (DHM). The principles of the method are described and discussed in detail. In practical experiment, because the phase shifter is neither perfectly linear nor calibrated, digital holograms with inaccurate phase shift step are recorded by the charge-coupled device (CCD). The phase could be accurately reconstructed from the recorded digital holograms by using the random phase-shifting algorithm, which makes up for reconstructed phase error caused by ordinary phase-shifting algorithm. The phase aberration compensation is also discussed. In order to verify the flexibility of the proposed method, numerical simulation of random phase-shifting DHM was carried out. The simulation results illustrated that the presented method is effective when the phase shift step is unknown or random in DHM.

Abstract:Computer-generated holography provides an approach to modulate the optical wavefront with computationally synthesized holograms. Since the hardware implementation for complex wavefronts is not yet available, double-phase decomposition is utilized as a complex encoding method of converting a complex wavefront to a double-phase hologram. The double-phase hologram adapts a complex wavefront for the phase-type devices, but the reconstruction is plagued by the noise caused by spatial-shifting errors. Here, a spectral-envelope modulated double-phase method is proposed to suppress the spatial-shifting noise with an off-axis envelope modulation on the Fourier spectrum of a double-phase hologram. This proposed method out-performs conventional on-axis double-phase method in optical reconstructing accuracy with indicated 9.54% improvement in PSNR and 196.86% improvement in SSIM.

Abstract:A non-iterative algorithm is proposed to generate phase holograms with optimized phase modulation. A quadratic initial phase with continuous distributed spectrum is utilized to iteratively optimize the phase modulation in the reconstruction plane, which can be used as an optimized phase distribution for arbitrary target images. The phase hologram can be calculated directly according to the modulated wave field distribution in the reconstruction plane. Fast generation of the phase holograms can be achieved by this non-iterative implementation, and the avoidance of the random phase modulation helps to suppress the speckle noise. Numerical and optical experiments have demonstrated that the proposed method can efficiently generate phase holograms with quality reconstructions.

Abstract:Depth of field, as one of the essential adjustment cues, affects the user experience and restricts the application of holographic displays. However, it is often underappreciated in modern holographic displays. In this study, we propose a novel computer-generated hologram (CGH) method that uses a pre-calculation procedure and a standard deviation-based loss function to generate realistic depth-of-field effects. The depth-of-field size is adjusted by controlling the randomness of the reconstructed phase. The ability of the proposed algorithm to control the reconstructed phase randomness was confirmed. Finally, a holographic display prototype was built to demonstrate the proposed method experimentally. The experimental results were consistent with the simulation results. Our findings may open up a new perspective on the application of existing stochastic gradient descent (SGD) algorithms to traditional methods for image quality optimization by adding random phases.

Abstract:An iterative method with bandwidth constraint strategy is proposed to design phase holograms for high-quality speckle-free optical reconstruction. The bandwidth properties of the reconstructed field are analyzed theoretically based on the sampling theory, which helps in properly allocating the sampling resources for efficiently describing the speckles and artifacts in the reconstructed field. Iterative calculation with bandwidth constraint strategy of the reconstructed field and quadratic initial phase can optimize the phase hologram without stagnation problem, which provides effective controls of the reconstructed intensity fluctuations and helps to suppress the speckles and artifacts. Numerical and optical experiments have been performed to validate the proposed method can achieve excellent image fidelity.

Abstract:The bidirectional error diffusion (BERD) algorithm is free from random phase modulation that introduces speckle noise on the reconstructed images, compared with other computer-generated phase-only hologram (POH) approaches. During the POH generation process, the amplitudes of all pixels are traditionally set to one for diffusing the errors to their neighborhood of unprocessed pixels. In this paper, we reveal that the reconstruction quality depends on the uniform amplitude value for different object pattern. The pattern-adaptive BERD (PA-BERD) algorithm is proposed for high-quality holographic reconstruction. The optimized amplitude value can be acquired for each object pattern and each propagation distance. The PA-BERD-based POHs have shown higher reconstruction quality than traditional BERD-based POHs in simulations as well as optical experiments.

Abstract:We investigate the influence of phase-shifting error on the quality of the reconstructed image in digital holography and propose a method of error elimination for a perfect image. In this method the summation of the intensity bit errors of the reconstructed image is taken as an evaluation function for an iterative algorithm to find the exact phase-shifting value. The feasibility of this method is demonstrated by computer simulation.

Abstract:Owing to the characteristics of existing spatial light modulators (SLMs), the computer-generated hologram (CGH) with continuous complex-amplitude is conventionally converted to a quantized amplitude-only or phase-only CGH in practical applications. The quantization of CGH significantly affects the holographic reconstruction quality. In this work, we evaluated the influence of the quantization for both amplitude and phase on the quality of holographic reconstructions by traversing method. Furthermore, we considered several critical CGH parameters, including resolution, zero-padding size, reconstruction distance, wavelength, random phase, pixel pitch, bit depth, phase modulation deviation, and filling factor. Based on evaluations, the optimal quantization for both available and future SLM devices is suggested.

Abstract:Holographic imaging is degraded severely by the speckle or incoherent noise. In this work, resampling mask method based on phase-shifting digital holography is proposed to reduce the reconstruction noise. The zero-order and the conjugate term of the hologram can be eliminated with four-step phase-shifting digital holography (PSDH). The complex amplitude of the object after propagation can be calculated by the phase-shifting algorithm. A phase-only spatial light modulator is used to realize PSDH in the experiment. The complex amplitude is encoded into several parts by resampling masks. A high quality reconstruction image with low noise is achieved through the superposition of the individually reconstruction of coded complex amplitudes. The experiment data go well with the asymptotic function. This method can be used for digital holographic imaging of the biological samples and microstructures. Experimental results prove the feasibility of this proposed method.

Abstract:Continuous complex-amplitude computer-generated holograms (CGHs) are converted to discrete amplitude-only or phase-only ones in practical applications to cater for the characteristics of spatial light modulators (SLMs). To describe the influence of the discretization correctly, a refined model that eliminates the circular-convolution error is proposed to emulate the propagation of the wavefront during the formation and reconstruction of a CGH. The effects of several significant factors, including quantized amplitude and phase, zero-padding rate, random phase, resolution, reconstruction distance, wavelength, pixel pitch, phase modulation deviation and pixel-to-pixel interaction, are discussed. Based on evaluations, the optimal quantization for both available and future SLM devices is suggested.

Abstract:Author(s): Gao Qian-Cheng, He Ze-Hao, Liu Ke-Xuan, Han Chao, Cao Liang-Cai At present, spatial light modulators are incapable of modulating both the amplitude and phase of the wavefront simultaneously. Therefore, when a spatial light modulator is used for holographic display, it is necessary to encode the complex amplitude of the object wave into amplitude-only or phase-only computer-generated-hologram. The phase-only holographic display has attracted much attention of researchers due to its characteristics of high diffraction efficiency and no conjugate image. However, current optimization algorithms for generating phase-only hologram have the problems of iterative divergence, slow convergence speed, and poor reconstruction quality, which is difficult to satisfy the requirements for high-quality holographic display. In this work, we propose an accurate adaptive mixed constraint Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm by constraining the frequency bandwidth in the hologram plane and adaptively constraining the amplitude of the reconstructed image in the image plane based on the angular spectrum propagation theory. Firstly, we use the angular spectrum propagation model without paraxial approximation to simulate the forward and backward propagation of the light wave for ensuring the accuracy of the wavefront propagation. Secondly, dividing the image plane into signal area and noise area according to the spatial distribution of target image, and different adaptive feedback strategies are set up for the two regions based on the optimized effect of the phase-only hologram. The adaptive feedback strategy is established, which can accelerate the convergence speed of the proposed algorithm and enhance the hologram of freedom of the optimization. Finally, the frequency bandwidth constraint strategy is introduced in the hologram plane to optimize the edge pixels and compensate for the frequency information loss of the phase-only computer-generated hologram, which improves the reconstruction quality of the hologram. After 100 iterations, the average correlation coefficient of the holographic reconstructed image of the proposed algorithm is about 0.9857, and the average peak signal-to-noise ratio is about 31.02 dB. The correlation coefficient and the peak signal-to-noise ratio of the reconstructed images of the proposed algorithm are better than those of the Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm with only frequency bandwidth constraint strategy, and the proposed algorithm has clearer texture and better display effect. The results of numerical simulations and optical experiments show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. Abstract:Random phase is usually assigned to the amplitude of the desired image to synthesis the phase-only computer-generated hologram(CGH). As a matter of fact, the CGH can be obtained directly if proper phase is assigned. But it is rather difficult since there are infinite ways of phase assignment. Based on the symmetry, a new deterministic binary phase coding technique is introduced in this paper. According to this method, the amplitude of the desired image is coded by a binary array derived form the desired image itself. The coarse CGH can be obtained by applying inverse discrete Fourier transform of the previous result. In order to get higher diffraction efficiency the usual iterative method is used to optimize the CGH. Using this method we have obtained several CGHs with high diffraction efficiency. The pattern of the binary CGH is transferred into the glass plate by inductive coupled plasma (ICP) technology. Experimental results are also given in this paper.

Abstract:Computer holography is a highly complicated and demanding task when it comes to producing realistic three-dimensional (3D) display. We present a calculation algorithm for generating 3D computer-generated holograms (CGHs) which can produce multiple shading effects. Computer graphics rendering technique is introduced in the CGH computing, which determines the reflectance distributions of the object surface according to the lighting model. The CGHs are then generated using point source method and the intensities of the sampling points are determined by the reflectance properties. The ambient, diffuse and specular reflections are included in the calculation to produce realistic shading effects of the 3D scene. A phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) is used to perform the optical reconstruction and the experimental results show that our proposed method can reconstruct 3D CGHs with multiple shading effects successfully.

Abstract:The influence caused by different phase-shifting a ngle of reference wave in recording and the phase-shifting error on the quality of the reconstructed image is investigated in two-step phase-shifting in-line digital holography, and an effective method of eliminating the phase-shifting error is presented, in which the summation of the intensity bit errors of the reconstructed image is taken as an evaluation function for an iterative algorithm to find the exact phase-shifting value. Then the optimal choice of the phase-shifting value of reference wave is simulated by computers. The simulation results show that the reconstructed image noise is weak when the phase-shifting value is in a certain range. At last, the feasibility of the method of eliminating the phase-shifting error is demonstrated by computer simulation also.
