Abstract:Semiempirical CNDO, AM1, PM3 and ab initio HF/STO-3G, HF/3-21G(d), and HF/6-31(d) methods were employed in the geometry optimization of the phenothiazine and the corresponding radical cation. The results obtained from the PM3 performances were as good as those from the ab initio calculations in the structure optimization of both phenothiazine and phenothiazine radical cation. The PM3 method was used to optimize the structures of a series of N-substituted phenothiazine derivatives and their radical cations. The PM3-optimized results were then analyzed with the ab initio calculation at the 6-311G(d,p) level, which yielded the total energy, frontier molecular orbitals, dipole moments, and charge and spin density distributions of the phenothiazine derivatives and their radical cations.

Abstract:Persistent chiral organic open-shell systems have captured growing interest due to their potential applications in organic spintronic and optoelectronic devices. Nevertheless, the integration of configurationally stable chirality into an organic open-shell system continues to pose challenges in molecular design. The π-extended skeleton incorporated in spiro-conjugated carbocycles can provide robust chiroptical properties and a significant stabilization of the excited and ionic radical states. However, this approach has been relatively less explored in the design of persistent organic open-shell systems. We report here the (S,S)-, (R,R)-, and meso-isomers of doubly spiro-conjugated carbocycles featuring flat and rigid carbon-bridged para-phenylenevinylene (CPV) of different conjugation lengths connected by two spiro-carbon centers, which we denote D-spiro-CPV for its quasi-dimeric structure. Our synthetic method based on a double lithiation cyclization approach enables facile production of D-spiro-CPV. D-spiro-CPVs exhibit circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with high fluorescence quantum yields (ΦFL) resulting in a high CPL brightness of 21 M-1 cm-1 and also exhibit high thermal and photostability. The monoradical cation of D-spiro-CPV absorbing near-infrared light is notably persistent, exhibiting a half-life of 570 h under ambient conditions due to doubly spiro-conjugative stabilization. Theoretical and electrochemical studies indicate the radical cation of D-spiro-CPVs presents a non-Aufbau electron filling, exhibiting inversion of the energy level of the singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) and the highest (doubly) occupied molecular orbitals with the SOMO level even below the HOMO-1 level (double SHI effect). Our discoveries provide valuable insights into non-Aufbau molecules and the development of configurationally stable, optically active persistent radicals.

Abstract:In this work, a novel pi-extended thio[7]helicene scaffold was synthesized, where the alpha-position of the thiophene unit could be functionalized with bulky phenoxy radicals after considerable synthetic attempts. This open-shell helical diradical, ET7H-R, possesses high stability in the air, nontrivial pi conjugation, persistent chirality, and a high diradical character (y(0) of 0.998). The key feature is a predominant through-space spin-spin coupling (TSC) between two radicals at the helical terminals. Variable-temperature continuous-wave electron spin resonance (cw-ESR) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry in the solid state reveal a singlet ground state with a nearly degenerate triplet state of ET7H-R. These results highlight the significance of a stable helical diradicaloid as a promising platform for investigating intramolecular TSCs.

Abstract:Sterically unprotected thiophene/phenylene co-oligomer radical cation salts BPnT(center dot+)[Al(ORF)(4)](-) (ORF=OC(CF3)(3), n=1-3) have been successfully synthesized. These newly synthesized salts have been characterized by UV/Vis-NIR absorption and EPR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Their conductivity increases with chain length. The formed meso-helical stacking by cross-overlapping radical cations of BP2T(center dot+) is distinct from previously reported face-to-face overlaps of sterically protected (co-)oligomer radical cations.

Abstract:Conventionally, the singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) of a radical species is considered to be the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), but this is not the case always. In this study, we considered a number of radicals from smallest diatomic anion radicals such as superoxide anion radical to one-electron oxidized DNA related base radicals that show the SOMO is energetically lower than one or more doubly occupied molecular orbitals (MOs) (SOMO-HOMO level inversion). The electronic configurations are calculated employing the B3LYP/6-31++G** method, with the inclusion of aqueous phase via the integral equation formalism of the polarized continuum model solvation model. From the extensive study of the electronic configurations of radicals produced by one-electron oxidation or reduction of natural-DNA bases, bromine-, sulfur-, selenium-, and aza-substituted DNA bases, as well as 20 diatomic molecules, we highlight the following important findings: (i) SOMO-HOMO level inversion is a common phenomenon in radical species. (ii) The more localized spin density in σ-orbital on a single atom (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, or selenium), the greater the gap between HOMO and SOMO. (iii) In species with SOMO-HOMO level inversion, one-electron oxidation takes place from HOMO not from the SOMO, which produces a molecule in its triplet ground state. Oxidation of aqueous superoxide anion producing triplet molecular oxygen is one example of many. (iv) These results are for conventional radicals and in contrast with those reported for distonic radical anions in which SOMO-HOMO gaps are smaller for more localized radicals and the orbital inversions vanish in water. Our findings yield new insights into the properties of free radical systems.
Helical Polycyclic Hydrocarbons with Open-Shell Singlet Ground States and Ambipolar Redox Behaviors

Abstract:Organic π-conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbons (PHs) with open-shell diradical character are attracting increasing interest due to their promising applications in organic electronics and spintronics. However, most of the open-shell PHs synthesized thus far are based on planar π-conjugated molecules. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of two new quinodimethane-embedded expanded helicenes H1 and H2 . The helical structures of both molecules were revealed using X-ray crystalloraphic analysis. It was elucidated in detailed experimental and theoretical studies that they possess an open-shell singlet biradical structure in the ground state and show a small energy gap and amphoteric redox behavior. Both compounds can also be easily oxidized or reduced into relatively stable charged species. The dianions of H1 and H2 exhibit similar electronic structures to their respective isoelectronic structures of the all-benzenoid helical analogues according to NMR measurements and theoretical calculations. Moreover, the structures of dication and dianion of H2 were identified by X-ray crystallographic analysis, revealing the effect of electron transfer on their backbones and aromaticity. This study thus opens the new space for both helical polycyclic π-systems and diradicaloids.

Abstract:Mesoionic compounds, with positive and negative charges, are expected to have dual-site highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO, donor) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO, acceptor) reactivity. Herein, we report a novel class of air-stable mesoionic N-heterocyclic thiones (mNHTs) synthesized from abnormal N-heterocyclic carbenes (aNHCs). DFT studies revealed a highly polarized exocyclic thione moiety and computed Fukui function analysis suggests the dual-site HOMO/LUMO reactivity of mNHTs predicting donor property at the negatively charged 'S' center while acceptor property at the cationic imidazole ring. The independent LUMO reactivity of the mNHT was realized by its chemical reduction to an elusive radical anion, which was characterized by a single crystal X-diffraction study. Further, we explore the reactivity of radical anion for the activation of SO2 gas, C-Br bonds of aryl bromide and photocatalytic functionalization of C-X (X = F, Br) bonds. This work unlocks the independent LUMO reactivity of a mesoionic compound.

Abstract:Many qualitative structure–property correlations between diradical character and emerging molecular properties are known. For example, the increase of diradical character further decreases the singlet–triplet energy gap. Here we show that inclusion of thiophenes within a quinoidal polycyclic hydrocarbon imparts appreciable diradical character yet retains the large singlet–triplet energy gap, a phenomenon that has no precedent in the literature. The low aromatic character of thiophene and its electron-rich nature are the key properties leading to these unique findings. A new indenoindenodibenzothiophene scaffold has been prepared and fully characterized by several spectroscopies, magnetic measurements, solid-state X-ray and state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations, all corroborating this unique dichotomy between the diradical input and the emerging magnetic properties. New structure–property relationships such as these are not only extremely important in the field of diradical chemistry and organic electronics, but also provide new insights into the versatility of π-electron chemical bonding.

Stable Mono‐radical and Triplet Diradicals Based on Allylic Radical‐Embedded All‐benzenoid Polycyclic Hydrocarbons

Abstract:High-spin organic radicals are notable for their unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties, but synthesizing stable high-spin systems is challenging due to their inherent reactivity. This study presents a novel strategy for designing stable high-spin polycyclic hydrocarbons (PHs) by incorporating allylic radical into fused aromatic benzenoid rings. To enhance stability, large steric hindrance groups with a synergistic captodative effect were added to the allylic radical centers. This approach was applied to synthesize derivatives of two open-shell all-benzenoid PHs: benzo[fg]tetracene (1) and dibenzo[fg,lm]heptacene (2). Both compounds exhibited excellent stability, with diradical 2 showing a half-life of up to 17.2 days under ambient conditions. Bond length analysis and theoretical calculations suggest that 1 and 2 predominantly feature Clar's aromatic sextet structures with embedded allylic radicals. Compound 2 was confirmed to have a triplet ground state through DFT calculations and experimental methods, including pulse EPR spectroscopy and SQUID measurements. This work introduces a new design strategy for stable high-spin hydrocarbons, paving the way for future developments in high-spin organic materials.

Abstract:Helicenes and expanded helical π-conjugated molecules consisting of aromatic benzene rings or heterocycles have been widely studied, but the incorporation of a quinoidal conjugated unit in such π-systems, which is expected to provide intriguing electronic properties, remains limited. Herein, we report the synthesis and redox properties of two quinodimethane-embedded expanded [11]- and [13]helicenes with respectively eleven and thirteen fused rings. Their helical-shaped geometry structures were unambiguously elucidated by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Both molecules exhibit a small energy gap and amphoteric redox behavior with multiple redox waves. Moreover, a fast racemization process for cyclopenta-fused expanded [11]helicene was observed above 173 K by variable temperature nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), with a small inversion barrier, while cyclopenta-fused expanded [13]helicene possesses a moderate racemization barrier (18.09 ± 1.72 kcal mol −1 at coalescence temperature T c = 360 K), as demonstrated by dynamic NMR spectroscopy. On the other hand, both compounds can be oxidized or reduced by NOSbF 6 or sodium anthracenide to the respective radical cations, radical anions, dications and dianions. Compared with closed-shell neutral compounds, their dications and dianions show significant open-shell singlet diradical character with a small singlet–triplet energy gap. This work provides some insights into the design and synthesis of novel helical π-systems with tunable properties.

Abstract:The monoradical cation 1˙+ and anion 1˙- based on tetracene were generated by one-electron oxidation and one-electron reduction of the bulky tetracene (1), respectively, which contain the largest π-fused skeletons reported to date. For monoradical species, 1˙+ and 1˙-, EPR spectra and DFT calculation results indicate the spin density delocalized over the whole molecules. Notably, in the solid state, 1˙+ and 1˙-, respectively, pack into (1˙+)n and (1˙--K-crown)n, characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The intermolecular interactions of 1˙+ and 1˙- are, respectively, through van der Waals forces and exchange couplings supported by metal ions. The monoradical cation polymer (1˙+)n was the first example based on PAHs. The EPR spectra at 90 K of 1˙+ and 1˙- all show forbidden transitions (Δms = ±2), indicating the existence of electronic coupling between the neighboring radicals, with respective 2J = -6.54 K and 2J = -0.22 K characterized by SQUID measurements.
Highly Stable Organic Bisradicals Protected by Mechanical Bonds.

Abstract:Two new highly charged [2]catenanes-namely, mHe[2]C center dot 6PF(6) and mHo[2]C center dot 6PF(6) -were synthesized by exploiting radical host-guest templation between derivatives containing BIPY center dot+ radical cations and the meta analogue of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene). In contrast to related [2]catenanes that have been isolated as air-stable monoradicals, both mHe[2]C center dot 6PF(6) and mHo[2]C center dot 6PF(6) exist as air-stable singlet bisradicals, as evidenced by both X-ray crystallography in the solid state and EPR spectroscopy in solution. Electrochemical studies indicate that the first two reduction peaks of these two [2]catenanes are shifted significantly to more positive potentials, a feature which is responsible for their extraordinary stability in air. The mixed-valence nature of the mono- and bisradical states endows them with unique NIR absorption properties, e.g., NIR absorption bands for the mono- and bisradical states observed at similar to 1800 and similar to 1450 nm, respectively. These [2]catenanes are potentially useful in applications that include NIR photothermal conversion, UV-vis-NIR multiple-state electrochromic materials, and multiple-state memory devices. Our findings highlight the principle of "mechanical-bond-induced stabilization" as an efficient strategy for designing persistent organic radicals.
Mesitylated trityl radicals, a platform for doublet emission: symmetry breaking, charge-transfer states and conjugated polymers

Abstract:Neutral π-radicals have potential for use as light emitters in optoelectronic devices due to the absence of energetically low-lying non-emissive states. Here, we report a defect-free synthetic methodology via mesityl substitution at the para-positions of tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl radical. These materials reveal a number of novel optoelectronic properties. Firstly, mesityl substituted radicals show strongly enhanced photoluminescence arising from symmetry breaking in the excited state. Secondly, photoexcitation of thin films of 8 wt% radical in 4,4'-bis(carbazol-9-yl)-1,1'-biphenyl host matrix produces long lived (in the order of microseconds) intermolecular charge transfer states, following hole transfer to the host, that can show unexpectedly efficient red-shifted emission. Thirdly, covalent attachment of carbazole into the mesitylated radical gives very high photoluminescence yield of 93% in 4,4'-bis(carbazol-9-yl)-1,1'-biphenyl films and light-emitting diodes with maximum external quantum efficiency of 28% at a wavelength of 689 nm. Fourthly, a main-chain copolymer of the mesitylated radical and 9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene shows red-shifted emission beyond 800 nm.

Abstract:Here is described the synthesis and characterization of a stable hydrocarbon radical, peri‐benzo‐diindenotetracenyl, with a helical structure. Although the helical π‐radical has no peripheral substituents, it was stable in the solid and solutions. According to the X‐ray diffraction analysis and quantum chemical calculations, the radical was best described as an allyl radical fused by five Clar's sextets. The optically resolved enantiomers exhibited mirror image CD spectra with |gCD| of 2.4×10–4 at 522 nm. The racemization barrier was determined to be 95.9 kJ/mol at 298 K, which is compatible with that of [5]helicene (108 kJ/mol).

Abstract:We have prepared a series of bis(semiquinone) compounds with dithiophene bridges of different length that evolve from closed-shell to full diradical character on the basis of the narrow singlet-triplet energy gaps which allows the triplet population at 298 K for the longer compound. The medium size compound has a variety of photonic properties with absorptions and emission in the true NIR region mediated by a unique case of antikasha emission. A whole set of optical absorption and emission steady state and pico-second transient absorption spectroscopies together with vibrational spectroscopies, spectroelectrochemistry and theoretical calculations have been carried our and subsequently interpreted.

Abstract:A triskelion-shaped triradical triindeno[1,2-a:1',2'-g:1'',2''-m]triphenylen-7-yl (1) and its internally fused derivative obtained by oxidative cyclization (2) were prepared in a straightforward synthetic sequence. Both compounds were confirmed to be triradicals and to possess intramolecular antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between spins, displaying a spin-frustrated doublet ground state with doublet-quartet energy gaps of −0.14 kcal/mol for 1 and −0.06 kcal/mol for 2. Despite their open-shell character, they were sufficiently stable to be handled under ambient conditions on a timescale of days. Both compounds could be reversibly reduced to mono-, di-, and trianions and oxidized to 1+ and 22+, with strong NIR absorptions (1800 to over 3200 nm) observed for all open-shell ions.

Abstract:Most organic radicals possess short lifetimes and quickly undergo dimerization or oxidation. Here, we report on the synthesis by radical templation of a class of air- and water-stable organic radicals, trapped within a homo[2]catenane composed of two rigid and fixed cyclobis (paraquat-p-phenylene) rings. The highly energetic octacationic homo[2] catenane, which is capable of accepting up to eight electrons, can be configured reversibly, both chemically and electrochemically, between each one of six experimentally accessible redox states (0, 2+, 4+, 6+, 7+, and 8+) from within the total of nine states evaluated by quantum mechanical methods. All six of the observable redox states have been identified by electrochemical techniques, three (4+, 6+, and 7+) have been characterized by x-ray crystallography, four (4+, 6+, 7+, and 8+) by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, one (7+) by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, and one (8+) by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
