Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) quantitative measurements of reacting multiphase micro-objects are of great interest in fuel particle combustion, which is composed of an inner fuel particle and an outer gas flame. Three models of digital inline holography of this composite fuel particle in the framework of light scattering and diffraction theories have been proposed, and then verified with reported experimental observations. Results show that the dispersed fuel particle and the gas flame distinguish in the reconstructed amplitude and phase contrast images, and reveal that the low extinction efficiency and phase shifting of the highly transparent, weakly scattering gas flame accounts for the difference. Assessment of Chemical Scalars for Heat Release Rate Measurement in Highly Turbulent Premixed Combustion Including Experimental Factors

Abstract:This study uses direct numerical simulation (DNS) data from two turbulent premixed flames to explore the variables involved in experimental measurement of the heat release rate, h. Several commonly used markers of h are compared, namely the CH, OH, and HCO radicals, as well as the spatial overlap of OH and CH2O and of H-atom and CH2O. The DNS data were also used to generate synthetic Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) images that account for confounding experimental factors such as laser sheet thickness, optical blur, and shot noise. The overlap of OH and CH2O and the HCO radical appear to be the most promising markers of h, as they show excellent correlation with the high-intensity heat release. The synthetic-PLIF images show that increasing the laser sheet thickness and optical blur progressively de-correlates the measurement and the underlying DNS structures. However, for a sufficiently thin laser sheet (delta(sheet)/delta(L) less than or similar to 1), the correlation between the synthetic-PLIF and DNS remains strong even with significant-optical blur. Similar results are observed in the measured layer thickness and the peak-to-peak distance between the PLIF structure and the heat release layers. The resolution of h features was evaluated by measuring the average turbulent flame length, the spatial power spectral density, and the flame surface curvature. As the laser sheet thickness or optical blur is increased, the measured flame surface area progressively decreases, less fine-scale features are resolved, and regions of high curvature are eroded. Shot noise strongly affects spatial correlation with the DNS data and the layer thickness, but has relatively small impact on the turbulent flame length. Significantly greater deviations are observed for the overlap techniques requiring simultaneous measurement from two cameras, as optical blur and/or shot noise present in the two camera systems will both influence the resulting overlapped PLIF signal. Abstract:3D measurements of burning coal particles in the flame are challenging and of great interest. Digital inline holography is applied to perform 3D measurement of coal particle size and 3D position in a laboratory-scale pulverized coal flame. Pulsed laser beam illumination is used to record the coal particle hologram with clear holographic fringes in the presence of high refractive index gradient and strong turbulence. Over 30,000 coal particles have been reconstructed and analyzed. Results show that the particle size, 3D positions and particle number density distribution can be determined simultaneously. Abstract:The burning behaviors of an individual coal particle in the combustion of a cloud of coal particles is of great importance because it represents the realistic situation of pulverized coal particle utilization. Digital inline holography is proposed as a tool for 3D quantitative imaging of the burning coal particle and its associated volatile flame, and demonstrated by its application to a laboratory scale pulverized coal flame. The holographic fringes of burning coal particles with volatile plumes are characterized by concentric rings as well as parallel lines. Besides the conventional 3D positions and morphologies of irregular coal particles, the volatile flames are clearly reconstructed. The instantaneous behaviors of the early stage combustion of individual coal particle in a pulverized coal flame have been observed. Typical modes of the volatile flame with respect to the coal particle, including envelope volatile flame, attached wake flame, detached wake flame, side volatile flame, are observed in the experiments. The burning behaviors of one coal particle influenced by another particle in the combustion of a cloud of particles has also been evidenced. This work demonstrates that digital inline holography has the powerful capacity of simultaneously measuring reacting multiphase objects in hostile environments. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:This work implements astigmatic dual-beam interferometric particle imaging (ADIPI) in propellant combustion diagnostics to enable the measurement of the three-dimensional (3D) spatial position and particle morphology of opaque particles. The ADIPI allows the discrimination of different substances, such as metal droplets, flames, and pyrolysis residues. A general theoretical model based on the generalized Huygens-Fresnel integral and the ray transfer matrix model is developed to describe the identification of ADIPI signals for regular and irregular particles. An experimental system combining a 13 kHz time-resolved ADIPI with digital in-line holography (DIH) is built to enable simultaneous measurements of the propellant combustion field. The typical ADIPI signals presented by different substances in the combustion field are analyzed by comparing the experimental results of DIH. The time-resolved 3D trajectory reconstruction of burning particles and the measurement of irregular particle size and morphology are realized. Due to the effect of the flame, the average deviation of the depth locating of the particles is 1.4 mm with a standard deviation of 1.0 mm. The average deviation value of the depth position relative to the measured distance is 1%. In propellant combustion measurements, the motion of burning particles can be accurately determined, proving its feasibility and practicality.

Digital holographic particle tracking velocimetry (DHPTV) is applied to perform 3D measurement of a laboratory-scale pulverized coal flame. Pulsed laser beam illumination is used to record the coal particle hologram with clear fringes in the presence of high refractive index gradient and strong turbulence. Over 30000 coal particles have been reconstructed and detected. Result shows that the particle size, 3D positions, particle number density distribution, and even 3D velocity can be determined simultaneously. DHPTV presents great potential in the 3D measurement of burning particles. Introduction Pulverized coal combustion is the most widely technology used for coal fired power plant. Clean coal utilization requires a deeper understanding of the burning coal particle field. Previous intensive experiments has been conducted on pulverized coal particle combustion via various advanced measurement techniques, such as PIV, LDV, PLIF and LII, but the 3D measurement of burning coal particle is few. Holography is a real 3D imaging technique, and capable of extracting the 3D information of the interrogated particles by two steps: firstly recording and then reconstruction of particle holograms[1]. The application of holography for burning droplets[2], coal particle[3] and even metal particles[4] with film hologram can date back to 1970s. Abstract:Recent developments have shown the potential of digital in‐line holography for diagnostics in fluids. This new method provides a low‐cost and an easy access method for measuring both size and spatial distribution of particles in a volume. Here, it is shown that, by applying traditional image processing tools on the particle images digitally reconstructed, statistical reliable results on particles size and spatial distribution can be obtained. The particle sizing method is experimentally illustrated by glass microspheres that are moving in a turbulent flow generated by a annular jet. A comparison with the histogram diameters provided by a common diffraction particle sizer are presented.

Abstract:It is difficult to track fuel droplets in a swirl spray combustion field due to three-dimensional (3D) movement and turbulent flame influence. The present work carries out an experimental study to investigate and track the dispersed kerosene droplets in a swirl spray combustion field. RP-3 kerosene and air are mixed and burned in open space under different mixture ratios. Pulsed high-speed (65 kHz) digital off-axis holography with an equivalent pixel size of 9.3 μm is adopted to visualize and quantify the droplet size, 3D position and velocity. The measurement uncertainty of the technique is calibrated and discussed. The turbulent flame of hydrocarbon fuel causes some darker speckles in the morphology view, but droplet images are clear and the initial droplet size distribution at 1 mm downstream of the swirler is obtained. A particle tracking algorithm considering x, y and z with different locating errors and droplet diameter is proposed and applied to obtain droplet trajectory. Smoothed droplet trajectories are obtained through multi-frame tracking and trajectory regressing methods. From the perspective of the Lagrangian view, droplet momentum and size oscillation are also observed and discussed.

Abstract:Atomization of low temperature fuel is of great importance in a jet engine combustor, and its visualization and diagnostics are challenging, especially in the presence of shreds and ligaments. A 25 kHz picosecond pulsed digital inline holography system is applied to measure the spray produced by an airblast atomizer with low temperature kerosene. The breakup process of shreds and ligaments of − 37 ∘ C kerosene are visualized and analyzed, revealing the transition of liquid jet disintegrating into droplets under the atomizing air film. Three-dimensional positions and size distributions of droplets in spray are acquired. It is found that a decrease in the kerosene temperature increases shreds and ligaments in the spray, which eventually leads to reduction of droplet density and increase of droplet size, while increasing the air pressure can compensate the degradation. This work also demonstrates that high speed holographic imaging is a powerful tool in spray diagnostics and liquid breakup visualization.

Abstract:The temperature field of an axisymmetric ethylene diffusion flame is measured using laser holographic interferometry. Temperature field inversion is completed with the aid of components distribution divided from numerical simulation of combustion and air components assumption. Error analysis of key steps is conducted using the theoretical formula of interference temperature measurement and characteristic structure of fringes obtained from optical simulation. Based on the calculation and analysis, air components assumption will not cause significant error in the low temperature region but will result in high error in the high temperature region. Moreover, the small error in environmental temperature measurement transfer to a high temperature range will expand more than tenfold. Results of temperature measurement using air components assumption relative to combustion simulation require the greatest amendment amounting to seven percent.

Abstract:It is difficult to measure fuel droplets in cylindrical combustors under combustion conditions, but of significance, since fuel behavior is related to combustion performance. In this study, digital off-axis holography and corresponding data treating algorithms are applied to quantify irregular spray droplets in combustion field inside a thick silica flame tube. The analytical expression of an off-axis hologram passing through a pipe is derived based on optic matrix theory and Fresnel diffraction transform. The interference fringes and phase distribution show consistency with the experimental results under the same condition. A modified convolution reconstruction method facing off-axis holography is proposed to locate and quantify the particles in a pipe. The theoretical simulation and experimental results indicate that the proposed method can obtain a clear reconstructed droplet. The image field of view does not change with the reconstruction distance. The particle field obtained through this method has distortion due to the refraction of the curved surface, and can be corrected through ABCD transfer matrix. The calibration method and modified results reveal that the overall droplet size error is lower than 1-pixel width, and real x and y locating errors after correction are lower than 1-pixel width. The depth position error is also discussed through experimental validation. The visualization and quantification results of fuel droplets in the real turbulent spray flame in a circular flame tube prove the feasibility of the proposed theoretical analysis and the reconstruction method.

Abstract:This work investigates the astigmatic dual-beam interferometric particle imaging (ADIPI) to enable the measurement of the three-dimensional (3D) spatial position and particle size of spherical opaque particles. A general theoretical model based on the generalized Huygens-Fresnel integral and the ray transfer matrix model is established to characterize ADIPI signal, revealing the orientation and spacing of typical ADIPI fringes relating to the depth position and size. The model is applied to study the effects of several parameters, such as the focal length of cylindrical lens, the focal length of spherical lens and the distances between the elements in the optical system, on the relationship between the inclination angle of fringes and depth position by theoretical simulation. Experiments of ADIPI, incorporating dual-view digital inline holography (DIH), is performed to demonstrate the utility of ADIPI in the measurement of opaque spherical particles. Through the analysis of the general ADIPI signal based on two-dimensional Fourier transforms, 3D position and the particle size are obtained. The results of ADIPI, in both of the depth position and size measuring, exhibit a high degree of consistency with DIH's, given the average relative deviations of 5% in size measuring and 1% in depth position, respectively. As a new measurement approach, the ADIPI signal exists at arbitrary angle except the two laser beam axes, determining the flexibility of ADIPI configurations which facilitates its great prospect in opaque particles measurement, e.g., metal combustion, chip manufacturing, 3D metal printing.
In-Situ Characterization of Coal Particle Combustion Via Long Working Distance Digital In-Line Holography

Abstract:A long working distance digital holographic system is developed to study burning coal particles, which are less than 200 mu m in diameter, in a methane-air flame. A general model for the lensed digital holography system is introduced first. An optimal lateral resolution of 3.9 mu m is achieved while the object is located at a safe distance (>15 cm) from the optical apparatus. The evolutions of particle morphology and devolatilization products are observed. Sizes and three-dimensional velocities of particles are measured and compared at the burner outlet, 10 and 24 cm above the burner. At the ignition, a condensed phase cloud is observed surrounding the coal particle due to the ejection of devolatilization products. Then the volatile cloud accumulates into stringy tails after detaching from the parent particle. The surface of the coal particle has rough morphology due to formation of porous structure after the reaction. Statistical size distributions at different heights above the burner show a 35% increase of peak size after combustion, and the fraction of the larger particles also significantly increased. Particles spread in the radial direction; meanwhile, particle velocities along the axial direction decrease with the height because of the drag force and gravity.

Abstract:The behavior of aluminum particles during Al/AP propellant combustion is studied by 25 kHz high-speed digital off-axis holography and high-speed microscopic imaging. The advantage of off-axis holography is that the effects of the enveloping flame are suppressed, thereby, achieving better burning particle imaging. Threedimensional dynamics of the aluminum particles from a series of time-resolved holograms are given in order to study the motion behaviors of particles during combustion. Typical processes, e.g., formation and change of the condensed phase products, micro-explosion behavior, and diameter ratio of enveloping flame and Al particle, are analyzed. This work provides a new 3D approach, that is, high-speed digital off-axis holographic imaging, for studying solid propellant combustion. Multi-dimensional and Transient Effects on Flamelet Modeling for Turbulent Pulverized Coal Combustion

Abstract:The transport along mixture fraction iso-surfaces is generally denoted as multi-dimensional effect, which is not considered in the classical one-dimensional (1D) flamelet model. This work investigates multi-dimensional and transient effects on flamelet modeling for turbulent pulverized coal combustion. To this end, instantaneous flamelets are extracted from a fully resolved 3D DNS database generated for a turbulent pulverized coal flame with a 33 array of particles. At first, the importance of transport along the iso-mixture fraction surface is analyzed based on the flamelet regime diagram. By this means, the flamelet regime of the local combustion is clarified. Then, the relevance of transient effects is investigated using budget analyses for transient terms in both physical space and composition space. Particularly, the significance of the Eulerian and Lagrangian transient terms is quantified. It is found that compared to the other transient processes, the transient change in the inner flame structure, i.e., the Lagrangian transient process, is dominant. Interestingly, the budget analyses show that the Lagrangian transient term can be partially recovered by the steady flamelet model. The findings obtained from the flamelet regime diagram and the budget analyses are consistent with the flamelet solutions where the multi-dimensional and transient terms are included in/excluded from the flamelet equations. The generalized flamelet equations including both multi-dimensional and transient terms can effectively reproduce the instantaneous flamelets in the DNS. Finally, a priori analyses are conducted to evaluate the multi-dimensional and transient effects on the final performance of the flamelet model. Overall, the a priori results are consistent with findings obtained from the budget analyses.
Study of the Spatial Distribution of Burning Particles in a Pyrotechnic Flame Based on Particle Velocity

Abstract:The burning particles in the pyrotechnic flame play an important role in the ignition and spectral radiance of the pyrotechnic. We used particle image velocimetry (PIV) and high-speed camera (HSC) photography to investigate the 3D spatial pattern and velocity of the burning particles in the flame of pyrotechnics. The original images captured by the HSC were preprocessed through threshold selection, image bivalency, edge detection, and contour extraction and segmentation to obtain the particle coordinates and velocity. Consequently, the particle tracking model was established and the velocity and spatial distribution of the burning particles were obtained. A comparison of the flame flow field with particle image velocimetry demonstrated the typical characteristics of the two-phase flow of the pyrotechnic flame between burning particles and gas. Compared with the convergent gas flow field, the higher velocity burning particles had a discrete distribution in the “comet tail” shape region and showed the same direction of motion as the flame flow field, whereas the lower velocity burning particles had larger outlying regions and showed inconsistent directions of motion. The flow field of the burning particles was more chaotic than the flame flow field of the burning pyrotechnics.

Flame analysis using a simple transmission digital holographic interferometer

Abstract:A digital holographic interferometer using a collimated beam in transmission mode to illuminate a flow coming from a diffusion flame is presented. The optical system proposes an indirect visualization of the flow to avoid saturation at the sensor. It can detect the intensity signal as a classical schlieren technique and the phase changes due to the presence of the flow. It is possible to retrieve a pseudo-3D flow's view and different gradient maps using the optical phase. According to the knife edge's position, these gradients could be observed in classical schlieren one at a time, but the proposed system could retrieve them all with a single image hologram. As proof of principle, a flame's flow is simultaneously observed with the optical system and a Z-type schlieren set up. A comparison of the visualized flows at different stages of the flame is presented and discussed. A temperature profile is obtained and validated with a thermocouple's point thermal measurements taking the resulting optical phase. Results from both optical techniques show a good agreement.

Abstract:Digital in-line holography has been found to be a powerful tool in 3D diagnostics of gas-solids flows.A study on particle sizing in gas-solids flows using a digital holographic system was presented.The recorded particle hologram was numerically reconstructed by using wavelet transform algorithm.A 2D interpolation method was used to measure particle image size based on the identification and 3D location of particles,and the real sizes of particles were obtained based on the point spread function theory of numerical reconstruction of particle in-line hologram.Gas-solids flows produced by an annular nozzle and in the upper dilute zone of a cold CFB riser were tested by using a digital in-line holographic measurement system.Glass beads with sizes of 20-100μm were used,and a volume of 10 mm×10 mm×100mm in the flow space was measured.It was found that the particles in the measurement volume were successfully reconstructed.The measurement results of particle size distribution agreed with those obtained by a Malvern sizer,which showed excellent capability of digital in-line holography in particle sizing.

Abstract:Digital holography shows great potential in flow field diagnostics due to its non-intrusive and instant three-dimensional and multi-parameter measurement. However, the low spatial resolution of the existing CCD, leading to small measurable area, is one of the limitations. Based on angular distribution of light scattering intensity, expansion of the measurement cross section of digital in-line holography was investigated at the condition of the existing CCD-resolution. Airy disk of forward light scattering of a particle limits the recording of interference pattern with high frequency, reducing the spatial resolution requirement of CCD. The measurement section of a flow field can be expanded by pre-amplification of CCD using imaging. The bigger the particle is, the larger the measurement section can be extended to. Effect of the CCD pixel size on particle measurement with different size was numerically studied, and coal particle flow was measured by digital in-line holography experimentally. Results show that the analysis is reasonable, and that the proposed method expanding the measurement cross-section is feasible. © 2011 IEEE.
