Abstract:With the rapid development of Internet, new media, such as blogs, wikis, and social media, become a major platform for information dissemination. Numerous studies focus on event dissemination trend analysis for individual media platform, while very few works are conducted to study the dissemination characteristics in a cross-platform manner. In this work, we propose ESAP, a novel cross-platform approach to analyze the event dissemination trend between social network and search engine simultaneously. ESAP includes three models: an event popularity model based on hot word dynamic weight; a trend similarity model to measure the similarity of event popularity across different platforms over time; and an attention degree model to measure event public attention through time. Experimental results based on four real-world event dissemination datasets (two from Baidu and two from Weibo) produce several interesting findings and validate the effectiveness of ESAP in modeling and analyzing event dissemination trend between social network and search engine from different perspectives.

Abstract:Collective behavior in online social media and networks is known to be capable of generating non-intuitive dynamics associated with crowd wisdom and herd behaviour. Even though these topics have been well-studied in social science, the explosive growth of Internet computing and e-commerce makes urgent to understand their effects within the digital society. In this work we explore how the stochasticity introduced by social diversity can help agents involved in a inference process to improve their collective performance. Our results show how social diversity can reduce the undesirable effects of information cascades, in which rational agents choose to ignore personal knowledge in order to follow a predominant social behaviour. Situations where social diversity is never desirable are also distinguished, and consequences of these findings for engineering and social scenarios are discussed.

Abstract:In this special section of Algorithmica, we have included several articles based on presentations made, during December 12–14, 2007, at the third Workshop on Internet and Network Economics (WINE 2007) in San Diego, California. The workshop provided a forum for researchers as well as practitioners to exchange innovative ideas and to learn about each other’s efforts and results. It reflects an emerging trend in merging theories, methodologies, and applications in computer science, economics, mathematics, management sciences to manage increasing problems motivated by Internet activities. The special section chose to focus on the market problems that have attracted growing attention in recent years. Four articles covering two recent active topics have been included, covering the prediction market and the sponsored search market. All selected articles have been significantly improved from the workshop presentations, taking into consideration helpful feedback from the conference presentations and reviewers’ reports. Chen, et al., made a thorough study of user strategic behavior on the prediction market with market scoring rule market makers. While truthful behavior under myopic traders was known, they studied in this work the non-myopic strategies of traders and developed information structures that lead to truthful behavior, for both the finite time horizon model and the infinite time horizon model.

Abstract:With the rapid development of computer, communication and networking technologies, Web information resources are becoming increasingly rich, and on-line applications are required to be more and more flexible. Therefore, a new generation of information models and mechanisms for these information processing requirements has become a major challenge.This talk will discuss four scientific problems in ubiquitous personalized information processing with wildcards, including demand driven aggregation of information resources, mining and analysis for aggregated information, user interest modeling, and system security. With these four components, a pervasive and personalized information processing mechanism can be constructed for dynamically organizing and optimizing multiple information resources, implementing a transparent and scalable information processing architecture, and flexibly building information and analysis services to meet various user demands.

Desires to augment additional useful information to these interfaces have led people to create custom applications that overlay their own data on top of browsable maps. Examples of such applications overlay housing information (http://www. housingmaps. com) and crime-rate data on Google maps, locations of vehicles (http://jprestonsystems. 2mydns. com/ vemap. aspx?name=demoacct2) and podcasters (http://www. podlook. com/map. aspx) on MSN Virtual Earth, weather data on custom maps (http://www. wunderground. com), etc. Such appli-cations have been possible after Google Maps and MSN Virtual Earth have published useful APIs to overlay location data on their maps.

Abstract:Information on the World Wide Web is congested with large amounts of news contents. Recommendation, filtering, and summarization of Web news have received much attention in Web intelligence, aiming to find interesting news and summarize concise content for users. In this paper, we present our research on developing the Personalized News Filtering and Summarization system (PNFS). An embedded learning component of PNFS induces a user interest model and recommends personalized news. A keyword knowledge base is maintained and provides a real-time update to reflect the general Web news topic information and the user's interest preferences. The non-news content irrelevant to the news Web page is filtered out. Keywords that capture the main topic of the news are extracted using lexical chains to represent semantic relations between words. An Example run of our PNFS system demonstrates the superiority of this Web intelligence system.

Abstract:Web conferencing systems (WCSs) have entered a golden age of rapid development, as evidenced by more than a dozen commercial products and an expanding consumer population in the past five years. While WCSs have revolutionized the way people communicate and collaborate, there is still a lot of room for improvement in both the technologies and the users experience. In this paper, we summarize the latest achievements in WCS design and implementation from both scientific research and technical engineering, identify open questions and key challenges that deserve more research attention, and discuss interesting directions to explore for better solutions. We envision this paper will stimulate more researchers to explore ubi-media collaboration via WCS.
Link the World: Improving Open-domain Conversation with Dynamic Spatiotemporal-aware Knowledge

Abstract: Making chatbots world aware in a conversation like a human is a crucial challenge, where the world may contain dynamic knowledge and spatiotemporal state. Several recent advances have tried to link the dialog system to a static knowledge base or search engine, but they do not contain all the world information needed for conversations. In contrast, we propose a new method to improve the dialogue system using spatiotemporal aware dynamic knowledge. We utilize service information as a way for the dialogue system to link the world. The system actively builds a request according to the dialog context and spatiotemporal state to get service information and then generates world aware responses. To implement this method, we collect DuSinc, an open-domain human-human dialogue dataset, where a participant can access the service to get the information needed for dialogue responses. Through automatic and human evaluations, we found that service information significantly improves the consistency, informativeness, factuality, and engagingness of the dialogue system, making it behave more like a human. Compared to the pre-trained models without spatiotemporal aware dynamic knowledge, the overall session-level score was improved by 60.87\%. The collection dataset and methods will be open-sourced.

Abstract:ABSTRACTSocially-aware networking provides a promising paradigm for data forwarding by exploiting the involved nodes' social properties in mobile social networks. However, individuals' learning capability and awareness to the dynamic environment have not been well explored in the literature. In this paper, we give a brief introduction of an interest-based scheme called BEEINFO. Inspired by swarm intelligence, BEEINFO takes advantage of individuals' perceiving and learning capability to gather information of density and social tie during communication. Moreover, it classifies communities based on nodes' interests and distinguishes data forwarding into situations of inter-community and intra-community. Furthermore, BEEINFO performs efficient message scheduling and buffer management to improve performance. The simulation results show that BEEINFO outperforms PROPHET and Epidemic in message delivery ratio, overhead and hop count, except for average latency.

Abstract:Many of today’s online news websites and aggregator apps have enabled users to publish their opinions without respect to time and place. Existing works on topic-based sentiment analysis of product reviews cannot be applied to online news directly because of the following two reasons: (1) The dynamic nature of news streams require the topic and sentiment analysis model also to be dynamically updated. (2) The user interactions among news comments can easily lead to inaccurate topic and sentiment extraction. In this paper, we propose a novel probabilistic generative model (DTSA) to extract topics and the specified sentiments from news streams and analyze their evolution over time simultaneously. DTSA incorporates a multiple timescale model into a generative topic model. Additionally, we further consider the links among news comments to avoid the error caused by user interactions. Finally, we derive distributed online inference procedures to update the model with newly arrived data and show the effectiveness of our proposed model on real-world data sets.

Abstract:In this article, we use game theory to analyze and model human behaviors in a social network to achieve better system design. Such analysis and modeling is very general and can be applied to many social networks. From the discussion in this article, we can see that different game models should be used for different social networks with different types of interdependency. When designing a system, not only the system efficiency but also the fairness among users should be taken into account. Moreover, since users are rational and thus naturally selfish, they tend to overclaim what they may need and will not truly report their private information if cheating can improve their payoffs. Therefore, one should consider users' selfish nature and develop cheat-proof strategies to guarantee satisfactory system performance.
Socialized Learning: A Survey of the Paradigm Shift for Edge Intelligence in Networked Systems

Abstract:Amidst the robust impetus from artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, edge intelligence (EI) has emerged as a nascent computing paradigm, synthesizing AI with edge computing (EC) to become an exemplary solution for unleashing the full potential of AI services. Nonetheless, challenges in communication costs, resource allocation, privacy, and security continue to constrain its proficiency in supporting services with diverse requirements. In response to these issues, this paper introduces socialized learning (SL) as a promising solution, further propelling the advancement of EI. SL is a learning paradigm predicated on social principles and behaviors, aimed at amplifying the collaborative capacity and collective intelligence of agents within the EI system. SL not only enhances the system's adaptability but also optimizes communication, and networking processes, essential for distributed intelligence across diverse devices and platforms. Therefore, a combination of SL and EI may greatly facilitate the development of collaborative intelligence in the future network. This paper presents the findings of a literature review on the integration of EI and SL, summarizing the latest achievements in existing research on EI and SL. Subsequently, we delve comprehensively into the limitations of EI and how it could benefit from SL. Special emphasis is placed on the communication challenges and networking strategies and other aspects within these systems, underlining the role of optimized network solutions in improving system efficiency. Based on these discussions, we elaborate in detail on three integrated components: socialized architecture, socialized training, and socialized inference, analyzing their strengths and weaknesses. Finally, we identify some possible future applications of combining SL and EI, discuss open problems and suggest some future research.

Abstract:With the advent of Web 2.0, new technologies for spatial data service, and demanding needs in spatial data sharing, and advanced analysis, both geographic information system and spatial statistics are facing challenges from different disciplines never met before. Due to their mutual beneficial roles in highlevel decision making, it's quite essential to make research on the integration of Web 2.0 based WebGIS with spatial statistics. Thus, to promote spatial intelligence, this study made an example of this integration by incorporating spatial cluster analysis seamlessly into China Geo-Explorer platform, a web-based platform for spatial & aspatial data integration and analysis. This integration made good use of benefits of WebGIS and spatial statistics, through data sharing, mapping and reporting, enabling spatial clusters identification with exploratory analysis and post-discovering knowledge from results of spatial pattern analysis. Some application scenario was introduced to demonstrate its great potential in spatial decision making.

Abstract:Over the past decade, computer-automated barter exchange has become one of the most successful applications at the intersection of AI and economics. Standard exchange models, such as house allocation and kidney exchange cannot be applied to an emerging industrial application, coined digital good exchange , where an agent still possesses her initial endowment after exchanging with others. However, her valuation toward her endowment decreases as it is possessed by more agents. We put forward game theoretical models tailored for digital good exchange. In the first part of the paper, we first consider a natural class of games where agents can choose either a subset of other participants' items or no participation at all. It turns out that this class of games can be modeled as a variant of congestion games. We prove that it is in general NP-complete to determine whether there exists a non-trivial pure Nash equilibrium where at least some agent chooses a nonempty subset of items. However, we show that there exist non-trivial Pure Nash equilibria for subsets of games and put forward efficient algorithms to find such equilibria. In the second part of the paper, we investigate digital good exchange from a mechanism design perspective. We ask if there is a truthful mechanism in this setting that can achieve good social welfare guarantee. To this end, we design a randomized fixed-price-exchange mechanism that is individually rational and truthful, and for two-player case yields a tight log-approximation with respect to any individually rational allocation.
