Abstract:The broadband input coupler of D-band TE 01 mode gyro-travelling wave tube (TWT) is designed, which transform the TE 01 mode in the rectangular waveguide to TE 01 mode in the circular inner waveguide. The mode converter with 4-slots and 5-slots are designed and discussed. The design of the input coupler is optimized by using CST to get minimum reflections, maximum transmission. The CST simulation results predict that the input coupler offers a good transmission and low reflection at D-band. The -3dB bandwidth is about 11 GHz.

Abstract:In this paper, the design and simulation of a Ku-band input coupling structure TE10 square -> TE11 circle for the gyrotronton-traveling-wave-tube (gyro-TWT) amplifier is presented in detail. The input mode TE10 square from the rectangular R180 is converted into the circular polarized mode TE11 circle by the input coupling structure, which consists of the mode converter part and the mode polarized part. It is a quite complicated process to optimize the input coupling structure since the parameters such as the disk thickness of the windows, the space between the disk and the axis of the waveguide, the radius of the waveguide, the length of the mode polarizer and so on, are all adjustable reciprocally. In order to reduce the reflection loss and expand the bandwidth of the input port the matched method of the phase and the amplitude is adopted in the process of designing the input coupling structure. With the optimization of the parameters the bandwidth of the input coupling structure is equal to about 1.0 GHz and 2.0GHz respectively when the VSWR (voltage standing-wave ratio) of the input port is equal to 1.2 and 1.4, which also corresponds to the 6.1% and 12.1% of the centre frequency respectively.

Abstract:A novel input coupler, 4 coaxial sector waveguides excited via a rectangular TE 10 , was simulated and verified by millimeter wave measurement. Simulations predicts that the average transmission was −2dB with a 3dB bandwidth of 15GHz (90-105GHz) and port reflection was less than -l0dB. Excellent performance was observed, which was in good agreement with the simulation results. This input coupler has many available applications such as gyro-devices, high power transmission line, microwave and antenna system.

Abstract:The rectangular gyrotron traveling wave tube (gyro-TWT) with a large aspect ratio (α) has the potential to achieve megawatt-class output power. As an essential component of gyro-TWT, a novel overmoded Ka-band mode converter with an α of 6.19 is designed, analyzed, and cold tested in this paper. Based on the magnetic dipole moment theory, the rectangular overmoded TE01 mode is excited via the rectangular fundamental TE10 mode. The cutoff waveguide is applied to prevent electromagnetic wave transport to the magnetron injection gun (MIG) region and also guarantee higher power electron beam transportation. Simulations predict an operation bandwidth higher than 4 GHz and greater than 99.8% mode purity between 33–37 GHz. To verify this design, the mode converter is manufactured and cold tested. The back-to-back measurement results exhibit a good agreement with the simulation. With similar topologies, the rectangular overmoded TE01 mode can be excited in a different α.
