Abstract:An imaging system with wide field of view (FOV) and high resolution is proposed in this paper. The optical design employed monocentric objective lens design combined with the unique arrangement of multi-aperture array, which empowers the system of good tradeoff between imaging performances and structural complexity. A prototype is built based on the design, achieving the field angle of 55° as well as the angular resolution of 40μrad. Experiments show excellent performances in distant view observation and images with 0.1 gigapixels can be finally obtained after image mosaicing, in addition, the proposed system has potential applications in airborne ground observation and crops survey in the future.

Abstract:The panoramic annular lens (PAL) system can capture plentiful scene information in real time. The locally described freeform surface can provide more degrees of freedom for the optical system design than the globally described one. In this paper, we propose a locally described annular Gaussian radial basis function freeform surface that enables a high-performance yet compact PAL system. The designed PAL system achieves an ultra-wide field of view (FOV) of (30 degrees similar to 125 degrees) x 360 degrees. The F-theta distortion of the system is less than 3%, and the modulation transfer function across the whole FOV is greater than 0.5 at 100 lp/mm. Abstract:In nature, many common insects have compound eyes composed of many small eyes arranged on a curved retina. This kind of vision systems have many advantages, such as small size, large FOV (field of view) and high sensitivity, which have attracted extensive attention and research from world-wide researchers. It has good application prospects in military strikes and mechanical vision. In this paper, a new type of miniature compound eye system with large FOV is designed, which contains a micro-lens array and a relay system. Hexagonal micro-lens array are spliced seamlessly as a curved shell in the designed compound eye system. The intermediate curved image formed by the curved array is converted to a planar image by introducing a relay system. After combination and optimization of the micro-lens array and the relay system, the MTF values at 89.3lp/mm for each FOV within 120.5{\deg} are greater than 0.3, and the corresponding RMS spot radii less than the radius of the Airy disk, which proves the good imaging quality for the compound eye. The clear aperture of a single micro lens is 250{\mu}m with FOV 6{\deg}. After tolerance analysis, the results show the image quality still holds good enough performance and meets the requirements of the additive manufacturing process.

Abstract:We propose a novel design of panoramic annular lenses (PAL) for the imaging of 360 degrees surroundings with a large field of view (FOV) ranging from 30 degrees similar to 105 degrees, which can partly realize the zooming function. Its wavelength band is between 486 and 656 nanometers. The conventional vari-focal PAL is based on the axial shift of some optical components, which will make the blind zone larger and out of the sensing area, while our design is based on the lateral shift, which can make some imaging area zoom in, keep the area of blind zone stay the same, and minimize the whole scale of this system. In order to change the focal length of conventional PAL system, we introduce several pairs of free-form surfaces (Alvarez surfaces) which can be regarded as several plano-spherical lenses and change the focal power of the whole optical system. As we set two different configurations (long focal length and wide angle), all of the optical parameters are designed and optimized with the help of the software (Zemax).

Abstract:Depth of field (DoF) defines the longitudinal range of objects in sharp focus. Imaging systems for machine vision are generally limited to a small DoF by various conditions, constraining the visual inspection of objects with large depth. In this paper, we develop a multi-image-distance imaging system, which can extend the DoF by capturing multi-focus images for fusion. A three-way beam-splitter prism is designed to support independent imaging of three image sensors. Through adjusting the sensors to different back focal lengths, multiple images focusing at different depths are captured in a single exposure. Finally, the focused regions of each image are fused for extending the DoF. Analyses of the proposed DoF extension strategy illustrate excellent enhancement more than three times. Moreover, we introduce a DoF measurement method based on the estimation of the point spread function, and measurement experiments are conducted using the fabricated prototype. Imaging experiments for various scenes demonstrate great imaging quality and DoF extension performance. The proposed multi-image-distance imaging system provides an effective and practical DoF extension solution for close-range visual inspection.
A compact bionic compound eye camera for imaging in a large field of view

Abstract:<p>The traditional imaging technologies, such as two-dimensional imaging, have not been able to meet people's needs for higher technology. Inspired by the characteristics, such as small size, sensitivity to moving targets and large field of view, researchers began to study bionic compound eyes. In this paper, a hemispherical mounting surface with through holes to set the compound lens array is fabricated by 3-D printing technology. More than one hundred small lenses are mounted on the 3-D printed hemispherical surface to form a bionic curved compound eye, which is then integrated with an optical relay system and an CMOS imaging sensor to form a rather compact bionic compound eye camera. The addition of the optical relay system solves the problem that the mismatch between the curved focal plane formed by the curved compound eye and the flat focal plane of the CMOS imaging sensor. By employing this method, we design and analyze the curved lens array and optical relay system, and perform the related optical performance tests on the fabricated bionic curved compound eye imaging system. The results show that a good image quality can be achieved. The formed bionic compound eye imaging prototype system rather compact and has a weight of only 121 g, a volume of 34 mm × 44 mm × 80 mm, and a field of view of 120° × 120°. This system has great potential and value in military, medical, and engineering applications.</p>

Abstract:The panoramic annular lens (PAL) is renowned for providing simultaneous vision of the panoramic space. However, its inherent central blind area is a significant drawback. In this study, we aim to harness the benefits of the PAL while mitigating its limitations by proposing a dual-channel panoramic zoom system without central blind area. The introduction of a positive front lens group for secondary imaging is a critical aspect of our design, which is guided and substantiated by our mathematical imaging model. The results from our design affirm the practicality and effectiveness of the secondary imaging. This design can achieve a zoom ratio of 1 . 46x and a maximum field of view (FoV) range of 71 degrees similar to 100 degrees , enabling zooming from front to rear. Exemplifying compactness, our system measures just 60 mm in total length, while providing a high-resolution output, as indicated by a modulation transfer function exceeding 0.3 at 200 lp/mm . With an F - Theta distortion less than 3.3%, the system maintains low levels of distortion. The analysis is instructive and the design shows potential in situations that necessitate compliance with size and resolution requirements.

Abstract:Compound eyes in arthropods demonstrate distinct imaging characteristics from human eyes, with wide angle field of view, low aberrations, high acuity to motion and infinite depth of field. Artificial imaging systems with similar geometries and properties are of great interest for many applications. However, the challenges in building such systems with hemispherical, compound apposition layouts cannot be met through established planar sensor technologies and conventional optics. We present our recent progress in combining optics, materials, mechanics and integration schemes to build fully functional artificial compound eye cameras. Nearly full hemispherical shapes (about 160 degrees) with densely packed artificial ommatidia were realized. The number of ommatidia (180) is comparable to those of the eyes of fire ants and bark beetles. The devices combine elastomeric compound optical elements with deformable arrays of thin silicon photodetectors, which were fabricated in the planar geometries and then integrated and elastically transformed to hemispherical shapes. Imaging results and quantitative ray-tracing-based simulations illustrate key features of operation. These general strategies seem to be applicable to other compound eye devices, such as those inspired by moths and lacewings (refracting superposition eyes), lobster and shrimp (reflecting superposition eyes), and houseflies (neural superposition eyes).

Abstract:Imaging systems that exploit arrays of photodetectors in curvilinear layouts are attractive due to their ability to match the strongly nonplanar image surfaces (i.e., Petzval surfaces) that form with simple lenses, thereby creating new design options. Recent work has yielded significant progress in the realization of such "eyeball" cameras, including examples of fully functional silicon devices capable of collecting realistic images. Although these systems provide advantages compared to those with conventional, planar designs, their fixed detector curvature renders them incompatible with changes in the Petzval surface that accompany variable zoom achieved with simple lenses. This paper describes a class of digital imaging device that overcomes this limitation, through the use of photodetector arrays on thin elastomeric membranes, capable of reversible deformation into hemispherical shapes with radii of curvature that can be adjusted dynamically, via hydraulics. Combining this type of detector with a similarly tunable, fluidic plano-convex lens yields a hemispherical camera with variable zoom and excellent imaging characteristics. Systematic experimental and theoretical studies of the mechanics and optics reveal all underlying principles of operation. This type of technology could be useful for night-vision surveillance, endoscopic imaging, and other areas that require compact cameras with simple zoom optics and wide-angle fields of view.

Abstract:<p>Bionic artificial compound eyes inspire a promising field of miniaturized imaging systems. In this research, a novel infrared (IR) three-dimensional (3D) compound eye imaging system, consisting of a double-side molded 3D microlens array and an aperture array, was designed and fabricated by combining modulated slow-tool-servo diamond turning and precision glass molding. To facilitate the complex profiles on the mold inserts, two novel slow-tool-servo strategies were adopted, namely virtual-axis based diamond broaching and adaptive diamond turning. This microlens array consists of 3 × 3 channels for a field of view of 48° × 48° with a thickness of 1.8 mm. The freeform microlens array on a flat surface was employed to steer and focus the incident light from all three dimensions to a two-dimension (2D) infrared imager. Using raytracing, the profiles of the freeform microlenses of each channel were optimized to obtain the best imaging performance. To avoid crosstalk among adjacent channels, a 3D printed three-dimensional micro aperture array was mounted between the microlens array and the IR imager. The imaging tests of the infrared compound-eye imaging system using the molded chalcogenide glass lenses showed that the asymmetrical freeform lenslets were capable of steering and forming images within the designed field of view. Compared to a conventional infrared camera, this novel microlens array can achieve a considerably larger field-of-view while maintaining low manufacturing cost without sacrificing image quality.</p>

Abstract:Looking Good: An electronic camera that shapes up like a human eye The electronic eye camera shown on the cover is a notable advance in optoelectronics. Even with the latest technologies it is difficult to produce a device to match the feats of imaging achieved by the human eye. Its hemispherical detector provides a wide field of view and low aberrations, using simple, single-component optics. Conventional optoelectronics materials exist only on the planar surfaces of rigid semiconductor wafers and cannot adopt spherical shapes. Now a multidisciplinary team based at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Northwestern University, Evanston, has created an electronic eye-like camera based on single-crystalline silicon technology. Two novel fabrication steps make this possible. First, the optoelectronic circuits are ultra-thin in unusual, two-dimensionally compressible configurations; second, specially designed elastomeric elements transfer these planar layouts into hemispherical geometries. In addition to eye-like cameras, these strategies should make it possible to integrate planar device technologies onto the surfaces of complex curvilinear objects, for use in health monitoring devices, 'smart' prosthetics and elsewhere.

Abstract:Optical measurement systems suffer from a fundamental tradeoff between the field of view (FOV), the resolution and the update rate. A compound eye has the advantages of a wide FOV, high update rate and high sensitivity to motion, providing inspiration for breaking through the constraint and realizing high-performance optical systems. However, most existing studies on artificial compound eyes are limited by complex structure and low resolution, and they focus on imaging instead of precise measurement. Here, a high-performance lensless compound eye microsystem is developed to realize target motion perception through precise and fast orientation measurement. The microsystem splices multiple sub-FOVs formed by long-focal subeyes, images targets distributed in a panoramic range into a single multiplexing image sensor, and codes the subeye aperture array for distinguishing the targets from different sub-FOVs. A wide-field and high resolution are simultaneously realized in a simple and easy-to-manufacture microelectromechanical system (MEMS) aperture array. Moreover, based on the electronic rolling shutter technique of the image sensor, a hyperframe update rate is achieved by the precise measurement of multiple time-shifted spots of one target. The microsystem achieves an orientation measurement accuracy of 0.0023° (3σ) in the x direction and 0.0028° (3σ) in the y direction in a cone FOV of 120° with an update rate ~20 times higher than the frame rate. This study provides a promising approach for achieving optical measurements with comprehensive high performance and may have great significance in various applications, such as vision-controlled directional navigation and high-dynamic target tracking, formation and obstacle avoidance of unmanned aerial vehicles.
Automated outbreak detection: a quantitative retrospective analysis

Abstract:An automated early warning system has been developed and used for detecting clusters of human infection with enteric pathogens. The method used requires no specific disease modelling, and has the potential for extension to other epidemiological applications. A compound smoothing technique is used to determine baseline ‘normal’ incidence of disease from past data, and a warning threshold for current data is produced by combining a statistically determined increment from the baseline with a fixed minimum threshold. A retrospective study of salmonella infections over 3 years has been conducted. Over this period, the automated system achieved >90% sensitivity, with a positive predictive value consistently >50%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the combination of statistical and heuristic methods for cluster detection. We suggest that quantitative measurements are of considerable utility in evaluating the performance of such systems.

Abstract:Compound eye cameras are a vital component of bionics. Compound eye lenses are currently used in light field cameras, monitoring imaging, medical endoscopes, and other fields. However, the resolution of the compound eye lens is still low at the moment, which has an impact on the application scene. Photolithography and negative pressure molding were used to create a double-glued multi-focal bionic compound eye camera in this study. The compound eye camera has 83 microlenses, with ommatidium diameters ranging from 400 μm to 660 μm, and a 92.3 degree field-of-view angle. The double-gluing structure significantly improves the optical performance of the compound eye lens, and the spatial resolution of the ommatidium is 57.00 lp mm−1. Additionally, the measurement of speed is investigated. This double-glue compound eye camera has numerous potential applications in the military, machine vision, and other fields.

Abstract:Miniaturized bionic compound eyes featured with multi-aperture imaging have potential applications in the areas of micro opto-electro-mechanical-system. In this manuscript, we present a novel structure of the bionic compound eye with multiple focal lengths consists of an array of individual lenses with 1000 µm diameter. The simulation results of the designed multifocal bionic compound eye (MBCE) with two focal lengths of 190 mm and 44.4 mm demonstrate excellent two-order focusing abilities. Moving mask exposure technology was used to fabricate the designed MBCE with the corresponding imaging experiments conducted to validate the two-order imaging ability of the fabricated MBCE. Experimental results revealed that the developed structure has potential applications in diverse optical imaging systems such as three-dimensional imaging and real-time detection of unconfined or fluctuating targets.

Abstract:In nature, arthropods have a remarkably sophisticated class of imaging systems, with a hemispherical geometry, a wide-angle field of view, low aberrations, high acuity to motion and an infinite depth of field. There are great interests in building systems with similar geometries and properties due to numerous potential applications. However, the established semiconductor sensor technologies and optics are essentially planar, which experience great challenges in building such systems with hemispherical, compound apposition layouts. With the recent advancement of stretchable optoelectronics, we have successfully developed strategies to build a fully functional artificial apposition compound eye camera by combining optics, materials and mechanics principles. The strategies start with fabricating stretchable arrays of thin silicon photodetectors and elastomeric optical elements in planar geometries, which are then precisely aligned and integrated, and elastically transformed to hemispherical shapes. This imaging device demonstrates nearly full hemispherical shape (about 160 degrees), with densely packed artificial ommatidia. The number of ommatidia (180) is comparable to those of the eyes of fire ants and bark beetles. We have illustrated key features of operation of compound eyes through experimental imaging results and quantitative ray-tracing-based simulations.
