Abstract:Spectral computed tomography (CT) relies on the spectral dependence of X-ray attenuation coefficients to separate projection measurements into more than two energy bins. Such data can be used to unveil tomographic material characterization - key in national security and medical imaging. This paper explores a radical departure from conventional methods used in spectral imaging. It relies on K-edge coded apertures to create spatially and spectrally coded, lower-dose, X-ray bundles that interrogate specific voxels of the object. The new approach referred to as compressive spectral X-ray imaging (CSXI) uses low-cost standard X-ray integrating detectors and acquires compressive measurements, which enable the reconstruction of energy binned images from fewer measurements. Various spectral and spatial coding strategies for structured illumination are explored. Subsampling in CSXI is accomplished by either view angle spectral subsampling, spatial subsampling enabled by block-unblock coded apertures placed at the source or detector side, or both. The careful design of subsampling strategies, spectral filters, coded apertures, and their placement, are shown to be critical for the quality of tomographic image reconstruction. The forward imaging model of CSXI, which is a non-linear ill-posed problem, is analyzed and a multi-stage algorithm is developed to address the estimation of the energy binned sinograms from the integrating detector measurements. Then, an Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) is used to solve a joint sparse and low-rank optimization problem for reconstruction that exploits the structure of the spectral X-ray data cube.

Abstract:This manuscript explores a new approach for spectral X-ray tomography that uses K-edge filtering structures to attain spectral and spatially coded illumination which enables the acquisition of compressive measurements for the reconstruction of energy-binned images. The system is coined compressive spectral X-ray imaging (CSXI). A multi-stage algorithm is proposed to solve the non-linear ill-posed problem using sparse and low-rank regularization constraints to exploit the structure of the spectral data cube. The proposed algorithm can reconstruct both the energy binned images as well as the material decomposition of the object given a set of basis materials.

Abstract:Spectral computed tomography (SCT) is used to perform material characterization in 3D images, a feature that is not possible with conventional computed tomography (CT) systems. Currently, photon-counting detectors are used to obtain the energy binned images in SCT, however, these detectors are costly and the measured data have low signal to noise ratios. This paper presents a new approach for SCT which circumvents the limitations of current SCT systems. It combines conventional X-ray imaging systems with K-edge coded aperture masks. In this scheme, a particular filter pair is aligned with each X-ray beam in a multi-shot architecture, therefore obtaining compressive measurements in both the spectral and spatial domains. Then, the energy binned images are reconstructed using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to solve a joint sparse and low-rank optimization problem that exploits the structure of the spectral data-cube. Simulations using coded fan-beam X-ray projections demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Abstract:. Computed tomography (CT) sequentially interrogates the object of interest from a complete set of view angles. Sequential scanning in CT introduces an acquisition delay and high radiation dose. This paper proposes a compressive sensing based "snapshot" coded X-ray CT (CXCT) method, where the object is simultaneously illuminated by multiple fan-beam X-ray sources equipped with coding masks in a fixed circular gantry. Low radiation dose is achieved by the use of incomplete projection measurements and encoded structured illuminations. Since all the measurement data are produced in one snapshot, the inspection time and motion artifacts are effectively reduced. Due to the overlap of X-rays in the measurements from several sources, a nonlinear reconstruction framework is established based on rank, intensity and sparsity priors. Then, a Newton split Bregman algorithm is exploited to reconstruct the object from a small set of nonlinear encoded measurements. Compared to the state-of-the-art CXCT approaches based on a linear model, the proposed method reduces the inspection time and motion artifacts significantly, achieving higher or comparable reconstruction accuracy.

Abstract:Compressive spectral X-ray imaging (CSXI) introduces a pixelated spectral modulator called K-edge coded aperture (KCA) in front of the X-ray source, which enables both, lower dosage to the subject, as well as the capability of spectral tomography while using low-cost integrating X-ray detectors. CSXI systems generally use hundreds of different spectral modulators, each with a distinct pattern to uniquely modulate the illumination at every view angle. In contrast, this paper introduces the use of a single and static coded aperture placed in a tomosynthesis gantry. The compressive system thus interrogates the subject with a fixed coded illumination pattern on all view angles. The advantages of the system are many including reduced cost and the feasibility of implementation. Given the reduced set of coded measurement and the limited spectral separation ability in the resulting architecture, the nonlinear inverse reconstruction problem results in a highly ill-posed problem. An efficient alternating minimization method with three-dimensional total variation regularization is developed for image reconstruction. Furthermore, rather than simply using a random pattern, the coded aperture is optimized under a uniform sensing criterion that shapes the spatial and spectral pattern of the coded aperture so as to minimize the overall radiation exposure placed on any volumetric area of the patient. This is of particular importance in medical imaging where patients at risk are recommended to have periodical X-ray tomosynthesis screenings. The coded aperture optimization is then posed as a binary programming problem solved by a gradient-based algorithm with equilibrium constraints. Numerical experiments show that spatial and spectral coding used in the proposed system to interrogate the subject not only reduces the radiation dose but it also improves the quality of image reconstruction. Gains close to 5dB in peak signal to noise ratio are observed in simulations. Furthermore, it is shown that the optimization of the KCA can effectively improve the uniformity of X-ray radiation compared to random KCA modulation, thus reducing the radiation dose throughout all volumetric sub-areas of the subject — an objective that is not possible with the use of random KCAs.

Abstract:This paper presents an adaptive reconstruction method for coded aperture temporal compressive imaging. A pixel-wise equal-exposure coding strategy is first implemented to induce speckle-like features in the moving area of the measured image. A moving area detection method is then proposed to reconstruct the adaptively segmented moving areas into a series of video frames, which are filled back into the stationary clear background. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly reduces the time consumption of video reconstruction without degradation of image quality.

Abstract:Single-view x-ray luminescence computed tomography (XLCT) imaging has short data collection time that allows non-invasively and fast resolving the three-dimensional (3-D) distribution of x-ray-excitable nanophosphors within small animal in vivo. However, the single-view reconstruction suffers from a severe ill-posed problem because only one angle data is used in the reconstruction. To alleviate the ill-posedness, in this paper, we propose a wavelet-based reconstruction approach, which is achieved by applying a wavelet transformation to the acquired singe-view measurements. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, in vivo experiment was performed based on a cone beam XLCT imaging system. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method cannot only use the full set of measurements produced by CCD, but also accelerate image reconstruction while preserving the spatial resolution of the reconstruction. Hence, it is suitable for dynamic XLCT imaging study.

Abstract:Compressive x-ray tomosynthesis (CXT) uses a set of encoded projection measurements from different incident angles to reconstruct the object under inspection. We consider the variable motion of objects on a conveyor mechanism and establish an imaging model based on the sensing geometry of a dynamic CXT system. Then, a numerical algorithm is proposed to optimize the structured illumination series to improve reconstruction accuracy with reduced radiation dose. Compared with the state-of-the-art method, the proposed strategy increases the degrees of optimization freedom by jointly optimizing the coding mask patterns, locations of x-ray sources, and exposure moments in the CXT system, thus obtaining better reconstruction performance. A genetic algorithm is applied to achieve the optimization results. It shows that the proposed method outperforms the traditional CXT approach by further improving reconstruction performance under comparable radiation dose.

Abstract:Coded aperture snapshot spectral imaging (CASSI) reconstructs a hyperspectral image from several two-dimensional (2D) projections via compressive sensing. The reconstruction quality and the sampling efficiency of CASSI can be effectively improved by decreasing the coherence of the underlying sensing matrix. Efforts have been made to minimize the coherence with individual optimization on coded aperture or sparse basis. In this paper, a simultaneous optimization on the system projection and the over-complete dictionary is introduced to minimize the Frobenius norm coherence. The dual-disperser structure and the RGB image sensor are adopted for the lowest coherence in terms of system configuration. The coded aperture and the dictionary are optimized with genetic algorithm and gradient descent respectively, and simultaneous optimization is conducted iteratively. Low coherence of sensing matrix is acquired after the simultaneous optimization, with both reconstruction quality and sampling efficiency significantly improved. Compared to the non-optimized system and state-of-the-art systems with individually optimized coded aperture or dictionary, the simultaneous optimization promotes the peak signal-to-noise ratio by more than 5dB. The coherence minimization via simultaneous optimization on the system matrix and the sparse representation basis may open opportunities for further development of other compressive-sensing-based computational imaging systems.

Abstract:Coded aperture X-ray computed tomography (CAXCT) systems reconstruct high quality images of the inner structure of an object from a few coded illumination measurements. Since the computed tomography (CT) system matrix is highly structured, random coded apertures lead to lower quality image reconstructions. In this paper, the noisy forward models of CAXCT in both Gaussian noise and Poisson noise are formulated and analyzed. In addition, a coded aperture optimization approach based on sparse principal component analysis is proposed to maximize the information sensed by a set of fan-beam projections. The complexity of the proposed optimization method is on the same order of magnitude as that of state-of-the-art methods but provide superior image quality. Computational experiments using simulated datasets and real datasets show gains up to ~4.3 dB with SNR = 25 dB in the reconstruction image quality compared with that attained by random coded apertures.

Abstract:Traditional compressive X-ray tomosynthesis uses sequential illumination to interrogate the object, leading to long scanning time and image distortion due to the object variation. This paper proposes a single-snapshot compressive tomosynthesis imaging approach, where the object is simultaneously illuminated by multiple X-ray emitters equipped with coded apertures. Based on rank, intensity and sparsity prior models, a nonlinear image reconstruction framework is established. The coded aperture patterns are optimized based on uniform sensing criteria. Then, a modified split Bregman algorithm is developed to reconstruct the object from the set of nonlinear compressive measurements. It is shown that the proposed method can be used to reduce the inspection time and achieve robust reconstruction with respect to shape variation or motion of objects.

Abstract:Compressive spectral X-ray imaging (CSXI) uses coded illumination projections to reconstruct tomographic images at multiple energy bins. Different K-edge materials are used to modulate the spectrum of the X-ray source at various angles, thereby capturing the projections containing spectral attenuation information. It is a cost-effective and low-dose sensing approach; however, the image reconstruction is a nonlinear and ill-posed problem. Current methods of solving the inverse problem are computationally expensive and require extensive iterations. This paper proposes a deep learning model consisting of a set of convolutional neural networks to reconstruct the CSXI spectral images, which correspond to inpainting the subsampled sinograms, recovering the monoenergetic sinograms, and removing the artifacts from a fast but low-quality analytical reconstruction. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method significantly improves the quality of reconstructed image compared with that attained by the state-of-the-art reconstruction methods. Moreover, it significantly reduces the time-required for CSXI reconstruction.

Abstract:Coded spectral X-ray computed tomography (CT) based on K-edge filtered illumination is a cost-effective approach to acquire both 3-dimensional structure of objects and their material composition. This approach allows sets of incomplete rays from sparse views or sparse rays with both spatial and spectral encoding to effectively reduce the inspection duration or radiation dose, which is of significance in biological imaging and medical diagnostics. However, reconstruction of spectral CT images from compressed measurements is a nonlinear and ill-posed problem. This paper proposes a material-decomposition-based approach to directly solve the reconstruction problem, without estimating the energy-binned sinograms. This approach assumes that the linear attenuation coefficient map of objects can be decomposed into a few basis materials that are separable in the spectral and space domains. The nonlinear problem is then converted to the reconstruction of the mass density maps of the basis materials. The dimensionality of the optimization variables is thus effectively reduced to overcome the ill-posedness. An alternating minimization scheme is used to solve the reconstruction with regularizations of weighted nuclear norm and total variation. Compared to the state-of-the-art reconstruction method for coded spectral CT, the proposed method can significantly improve the reconstruction quality. It is also capable of reconstructing the spectral CT images at two additional energy bins from the same set of measurements, thus providing more spectral information of the object.

Abstract:Coded aperture X-ray computed tomography (CAXCT) is a novel X-ray imaging system capable of reconstructing high quality images from a reduced set of measurements. Coded apertures are placed in front of the X-ray source in CAXCT so as to obtain patterned projections onto a detector array. Then, compressive sensing (CS) reconstruction algorithms are used to reconstruct the linear attenuation coefficients. The coded aperture is an important factor that influences the point spread function (PSF), which in turn determines the capability to sample the linear attenuation coefficients of the object. A coded aperture optimization approach was recently proposed based on the coherence of the system matrix; however, this algorithm is memory intensive and it is not able to optimize the coded apertures for large image sizes required in many applications. This paper introduces a significantly more efficient approach for coded aperture optimization that reduces the memory requirements and the execution time by orders of magnitude. The features are defined as the inner product of the vectors representing the geometric paths of the X-rays with the sparse basis representation of the object; therefore, the algorithm aims to find a subset of features that minimizes the information loss compared to the complete set of projections. This subset corresponds to the unblocking elements in the optimized coded apertures. The proposed approach solves the memory and runtime limitations of the previously proposed algorithm and provides a significant gain in the reconstruction image quality compared to that attained by random coded apertures in both simulated datasets and real datasets.

Abstract:Compressive X-ray tomosynthesis is an emerging technique to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) objects from two-dimensional projection measurements generated by a set of spatially distributed X-ray sources, where coded apertures are used in front of each source to modulate a set of X-rays to interrogate an object with a reduced radiation dose without loss of image reconstruction quality. The reconstruction performance in compressive tomosynthesis is influenced by several factors including the locations of the X-ray sources, their incident angles, and the coded apertures that determine the structured illumination patterns. This paper develops a source and coded aperture joint optimization (SCO) approach to improve the image reconstruction performance of compressive X-ray tomosynthesis. Based on compressive sensing theory, the synergy among the source pattern, source orientation, and the coded apertures is utilized to minimize the coherence of the sensing matrix of the imaging system. In concert with a gradient-based optimization algorithm, regularization methods are used to reduce the convergence error and achieve uniform sensing of the object under inspection. Compared to the optimization of either the source orientation, or the coded aperture individually, the proposed method effectively increases the degree of optimization freedom, and thus achieves considerable improvement in the 3D imaging reconstruction accuracy. Abstract:Coded aperture X-ray CT (CAXCT) is a new low-dose imaging technology that promises far-reaching benefits in industrial and clinical applications. It places various coded apertures (CA) at a time in front of the X-ray source to partially block the radiation. The ill-posed inverse reconstruction problem is then solved using l1-norm-based iterative reconstruction methods. Unfortunately, to attain high-quality reconstructions, the CA patterns must change in concert with the view-angles making the implementation impractical. This paper proposes a simple yet radically different approach to CAXCT, which is coined StaticCodeCT, that uses a single-static CA in the CT gantry, thus making the imaging system amenable for practical implementations. Rather than using conventional compressed sensing algorithms for recovery, we introduce a new reconstruction framework for StaticCodeCT. Namely, we synthesize the missing measurements using low-rank tensor completion principles that exploit the multi-dimensional data correlation and low-rank nature of a 3-way tensor formed by stacking the 2D coded CT projections. Then, we use the FDK algorithm to recover the 3D object. Computational experiments using experimental projection measurements exhibit up to 10% gains in the normalized root mean square distance of the reconstruction using the proposed method compared with those attained by alternative low-dose systems.

Abstract:Compressive X-ray tomosynthesis is an emerging technology that can be used for medical diagnosis, safety inspection and industrial non-destructive testing. Traditional compressive X-ray tomosynthesis uses sequential illumination to interrogate the object of interest, which generates non-overlapping projection measurements. However, when multiple X-ray sources emit simultaneously, the projections corresponding to different sources overlap creating multiplexed measurements. Such measurement strategy leads to a non-linear reconstruction problem. The reconstruction of the three-dimensional (3D) object from multiplexed projections is an important problem. This paper proposes a non-linear 3D reconstruction approach for compressive X-ray tomosynthesis, where a set of coding masks are used to generate structured illumination and reduce radiation dose. The effectiveness of the method is verified by simulation experiments. It is shown that the proposed approach can reconstruct high-quality images with just a few snapshots.

Abstract:Coded aperture X-ray computed tomography is a computational imaging technique capable of reconstructing inner structures of an object from a reduced set of X-ray projection measurements. Coded apertures are placed in front of the X-ray sources from different views and thus significantly reduce the radiation dose. This paper introduces coded aperture X-ray computed tomography for robotic X-ray systems which offer positioning flexibility. While single coded-aperture 3D tomography was recently introduced for standard trajectory CT scanning, it is shown that significant gains in imaging performance can be attained by simple modifications in the CT scanning trajectories enabled by emerging dual robotic CT systems. In particular, the subject is fixed on a plane and the CT system uniformly rotates around the r −axis which is misaligned with the coordinate axes. A single stationary coded aperture is placed on front of the robotic X-ray source above the plane and the corresponding X-ray projections are measured by a two-dimensional detector on the second arm of the robotic system. The compressive measurements with misalignment enable the reconstruction of high-resolution three-dimensional volumetric images from the low-resolution coded projections on the detector at a sub-sampling rate. An efficient algorithm is proposed to generate the rotation matrix with two basic sub-matrices and thus the forward model is formulated. The stationary coded aperture is designed based on the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient analysis and the direct binary search algorithm is used to obtain the optimized coded aperture. Simulations using simulated datasets show significant gains in reconstruction performance compared to conventional coded aperture CT systems.

Abstract:Compressive X-ray tomosynthesis is a computational imaging technique used to reconstruct three-dimensional objects from a set of projection measurements, where the masks are used to modulate the structured illumination to reduce the radiation dose while retaining the reconstruction performance. This paper proposes a conveyor X-ray tomosynthesis imaging method with optimized structured sequential illumination. Variations of this geometry where the object is static but the measurement gantry is dynamic are possible within the proposed framework. In this system, several X-ray sources are successively used to interrogate the moving object lying on a conveyor, where the compressive measurements are received by a set of low-cost strip detectors. The dynamic imaging model, and reconstruction framework of the proposed system are established taking into account sensing geometry along with the movement of the object. Subsequently, a genetic algorithm is developed to optimize the exposure sequence of X-ray sources, and mask patterns, and during the dynamic measurement process. The optimization problem is formulated based on the restricted isometry property of compressive sensing theory to ameliorate the ill-posed inverse tomosynthesis problem. The optimized structured sequential illumination is proved to significantly improve the imaging performance of the conveyor X-ray tomosynthesis system based on a set of simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, a coded aperture optimization approach based on sparse principal component analysis (SPCA) is proposed to maximize the information sensed by a set of cone-beam projections. The variables in the CT system matrix correspond to observations of the attenuation characteristics of X-ray projections. An adjusted joint variance is used to update the variables and thus the overlapping information of the kth principal component is constrained by the previous k - 1 principal components. Since the coded aperture matrix is diagonal and binary, an efficient algorithm is proposed to reduce the complexity by one order of magnitude. Simulations using simulated datasets, 3D Shepp-Logan phantom, show significant gains up to 23.5dB compared with that attained by random coded apertures. Singular value decomposition (SVD) of the optimized coded apertures is used to analyze the performance of the proposed coded aperture optimization method based on SPCA.
