Abstract:Petroleum-based plastics are useful but they pose a great threat to the environment and human health. It is highly desirable yet challenging to develop sustainable structural materials with excellent mechanical and optical properties for plastic replacement. Here, we report a simple and efficient method to manufacture high-performance all-biobased structural materials from cellulosic wood skeleton (WS) and gelatin via oxidation and densification. Specifically, gelatin was grafted to the oxidized cellulose wood skeletons (DAWS) and then physically crosslinked via Tannic acid (TA), resulting in a significant enhancement of the material properties. Notably, only a mild pressure was applied during the drying process to form a densified TA/Gelatin/transparent wood film(TWF). The developed TA/Gelatin/TWF (thickness:100 ± 12 μm) exhibited a desirable combination of high strength (∼154.59 MPa), light transmittance (86.2 % at 600 nm), low haze (16.7 %), high water stability (wet strength: ∼130.13 MPa) and ultraviolet blocking efficacy which surpass most of the petroleum-based plastics. In addition, due to the all bio-based origins (wood and gelatin), TA/Gelatin/TWF are easily biodegradable under natural conditions, leading to less impact on the environment. These findings would hold promises for exploring high-quality all bio-based wood composites as eco-friendly alternatives to substitute plastics with wide applications, e.g. anti-counterfeiting, UV protection, and flexible electricals.

Abstract:Using biodegradable material derived from renewable resources as petroleum-based plastics replacement is a promising way towards sustainable development. However, the insufficient mechanical properties and complex manufacturing process of bioplastics still need to be improved for high-quality food packages. Herein, we report a top-down strategy to transform natural wood into a clear wood packaging film through scalable delignification and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) infiltration. The wood packaging film demonstrates a laminated structure with completely collapsed cell walls and PVA intertwined together after energy-saving air drying, resulting in high light transmittance with low haze, good mechanical performance, and high barrier performance for oxygen and water vapor. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the underlying fracture mechanism between cellulose and PVA, which effectively enhances the Young's modulus and strength of the wood packaging film. These findings contribute to the development of biodegradable and strong packaging materials, as well as other food-related applications, using sustainable wood.

Abstract:Transparent films or substrates are ubiquitously used in photonics and optoelectronics, with glass and plastics as traditional choice of materials. Transparent films made of cellulose nanofibers are reported recently. However, all these films are isotropic in nature. This work, for the first time, reports a remarkably facile and effective approach to fabricating anisotropic transparent films directly from wood. The resulting films exhibit an array of exceptional optical and mechanical properties. The well‐aligned cellulose nanofibers in natural wood are maintained during delignification, leading to an anisotropic film with high transparency (≈90% transmittance) and huge intensity ratio of transmitted light up to 350%. The anisotropic film with well‐aligned cellulose nanofibers has a mechanical tensile strength of up to 350 MPa, nearly three times of that of a film with randomly distributed cellulose nanofibers. Atomistic mechanics modeling further reveals the dependence of the film mechanical properties on the alignment of cellulose nanofibers through the film thickness direction. This study also demonstrates guided liquid transport in a mesoporous, anisotropic wood film and its possible application in enabling new nanoelectronic devices. These unique and highly desirable properties of the anisotropic transparent film can potentially open up a range of green electronics and nanofluidics.

Abstract:Wood is a high-strength lightweight material owing to its orthotropic cellular structure and composite-like constitution. In conventional fabrication of wood-derived functional materials, the removal of the potentially beneficial components, such as lignin and hemicellulose, often leads to the disruption of the native hierarchical wood structure. Herein, we developed a facile method of in situ wood sulfonation followed by hot pressing for pine veneers to prepare high-density transparent thin films with preserved wood components and the natural fiber alignment. An optimum lignin content of the hot-pressed films was found to be 20.6% where both mechanical and optical properties were significantly enhanced with a more dense and compact structure. The hot-pressed transparent wood films also showed UV-blocking capability and could be recycled into discrete wood fibers owing to the sulfonate groups endowed by the in situ sulfonation step. The unique combination of properties achieved for thin wood films marks an important step in engineering functional wood-based materials that utilize both the structure of aligned fibers and the complex components of natural wood.

Lightweight, Strong, and Transparent Wood Films Produced by Capillary Driven Self‐Densification

Abstract:Inspired by the natural phenomenon of capillary action, a more sustainable processing strategy based on capillary force driven self‐densification is demonstrated, by which the delignified wood cells collapse into a lightweight, transparent and strong wood film. This is enabled by additional softening of delignified wood via a mild physical swelling process (in situ nanofibrillation) using an ionic liquid‐20 wt% H2O mixture. Wood delignification and densification enable the production of high strength and/or transparent wood materials with exceptional properties. However, processing needs to be more sustainable and besides the chemical delignification treatments, energy intense hot‐pressing calls for alternative approaches. Here, this study shows that additional softening of delignified wood via a mild swelling process using an ionic liquid‐water mixture enables the densification of tube‐line wood cells into layer‐by‐layer sheet structures without hot‐pressing. The natural capillary force induces self‐densification in a simple drying process resulting in a transparent wood film. The as‐prepared films with ≈150 μm thickness possess an optical transmittance ≈70%, while maintaining optical haze >95%. Due to the densely packed sheet structure with a large interfacial area, the reassembled wood film is fivefold stronger and stiffer than the delignified wood in fiber direction. Owing to a low density, the specific tensile strength and elastic modulus are as high as 282 MPa cm3 g−1 and 31 GPa cm3 g−1. A facile and highly energy efficient wood nanotechnology approach are demonstrated toward more sustainable materials and processes by directly converting delignified wood into transparent wood omitting polymeric matrix infiltration or mechanical pressing.

In situ self-assembly of pulp microfibers and nanofibers into a transparent, high-performance and degradable film

Abstract:Despite the significant properties of fossil plastics, the current unsustainable methods employed in production, usage and disposal present a grave threat to both energy and environment. The development of degradable biomass materials as substitutes for fossil plastics can effectively address the energy-environment paradox at the source. Here, we prepared novel micro-nano multiscale composite films through assembling and crosslinking nanocellulose with coniferous wood pulp microfibers. The composite film combines the advantages of microfibers and nanocellulose, achieving a maximum transmittance of 91 %, foldability, excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength: 51.3 MPa, elongation at break: 4 %, young's modulus: 3.4 GPa), high thermal stability and complete degradation within 40 days. The composite film exhibits mechanochemical self-healing and retains properties even after fracture. Such exceptional performance fully meets the requirements for substituting petroleum plastics. By incorporating CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ into the composite film, it enables dual emission of red and blue light, thereby being able to promote plant growth and presenting potential as a novel sustainable alternative for agricultural films. By assembling microfiber and nanocellulose, such novel strategy is presented for the fabrication of high-quality biomass materials, thereby offering a promising avenue towards environment-friendly resource-sustainable new materials.
Self-assembly of Biopolymer Films for UV Protection of Wood

Abstract:There is an increasing need for materials with tunable physical and chemical properties that are relatively non-toxic and efficacious for their intended application. Many wood stains and finishes emit toxic chemicals which may have serious implications to one’s health. A novel alternative material is realized between xanthan gum and Neodol, a non-ionic surfactant. The resulting three-dimensional film is evaluated as a free-radical scavenger for the protection of wood at different ratios. Atomic force microscopy visualizes the topography and quantifies the local nanomechanics, while rheological measurements showcase a shift from viscoelastic material to gel. Electron plasmon resonance confirms the free-radical reducing ability (3.5 times), while liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy quantifies the UV degradation of sinapyl alcohol. This material has potential, not only in coating industries as a safer option, but also in those industries requiring flexibility and tenability, namely for biosensors and anti-inflammatory therapeutics.

Abstract:The development of high-performance composite films using biomass materials have become a sought-after direction. Herein, a green method to fabricate strong, flexible and UV-shielding biological composite film from wood cellulose skeleton (WCS), lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was described. In the work, WCS and LNPs were prepared by chemical treatment of wood veneer and Enzymatic lignin, respectively. Then, WCS was infiltrated with the LNPs/PVA mixtures and dried to obtain composite films. WCS enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite films, the tensile stress reached to 85.8 MPa and the tensile strain reached to 6.39 %. The composite films with LNPs blocked over 98 % of UV-light, the water absorption decreased by 30 %, and the thermal stabilities were also improved. These findings would provide some references for exploring high quality biological composite films.

Abstract:Cellulosic biomass is an abundant renewable resource that is suitable as a filler for commercial polyesters to reduce the cost of biodegradable plastics. However, the limited miscibility of lignocelluloses and polyesters results in the poor tensile properties and competitiveness of the composites. Herein, wood-based biodegradable composite films with applicable mechanical properties were directly fabricated by blending chemically modified wood meal with poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) matrix. Wood meal was efficiently dissolved and modified by a rapid (1 h) homogeneous esterification reaction with lauryl chloride in an ionic liquid under a microwave-assisted condition. The esterified wood offered good thermoplastic and hydrophobic characteristics and processability, and it can be better melt-blended with PBAT. The prepared wood-based PBAT composite films exhibited acceptable tensile properties (17.0 MPa and 452.7%) under a high addition ratio (40%) of esterified wood. The characterizations of chemical structure, morphology, and thermal properties of the composites revealed that the uniform dispersion and excellent compatibility between esterified wood and PBAT boosted the final mechanical properties of the composite films. This work offers a rapid route to produce economically competitive biodegradable composite films.

Facile synthesis of high strength hot-water wood extract films with oxygen-barrier performance

Abstract:Biobased nanocomposite films for food packaging with high mechanical strength and good oxygen-barrier performance were developed using a hot-water wood extract (HWE). In this work, a facile approach to produce HWE/montmorillonite (MMT) based nanocomposite films with excellent physical properties is described. The focus of this study was to determine the effects of the MMT content on the structure and mechanical properties of nanocomposites and the effects of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) on the physical properties of the HWE-MMT films. The experimental results suggested that the intercalation of HWE and CMC in montmorillonite could produce compact, robust films with a nacre-like structure and multifunctional characteristics. This results of this study showed that the mechanical properties of the film designated FCMC0.05 (91.5 MPa) were dramatically enhanced because the proportion of HWE, MMT and CMC was 1:1.5:0.05. In addition, the optimized films exhibited an oxygen permeability below 2.0 cm3 μm/day·m2·kPa, as well as good thermal stability due to the small amount of CMC. These results provide a comprehensive understanding for further development of high-performance nanocomposites which are based on natural polymers (HWE) and assembled layered clays (MMT). These films offer great potential in the field of sustainable packaging.
Constructing a Novel Xylan-Based Film with Flexibility, Transparency, and High Strength.

Abstract:Xylan-based films have great potential to replace petroleum-based polymers used for packaging and coatings due to their excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and good gas barrier properties. However, fabricating a xylan-based film with flexible, transparent, water-proof, and excellent mechanical properties is an enormous challenge. Herein, we manufactured a series of degradable films with adjustable properties via solution-casting using a water-soluble xylan derivative. This is the first report of a pure xylan-based film with high performance, requiring no additives. The tensile strength of the xylan-based film could be controlled by adjusting the aldehyde content, which varied from 105.0 to 132.6 MPa. The smallest initial water contact angle of the xylan-based films is 93.26°, indicating that these films are hydrophobic. This work shows a simple and viable route toward manufacturing xylan-based films with high tensile strength, flexibility, and transparency, which can be used for packaging materials and coatings.
Transparent, UV Blocking, and Strong Wood-Based Biocomposites with Isotropic Optical and Mechanical Properties

Abstract:Transparent wood-based materials show great potential for energy-efficient housing and construction due to their ideal optical performances, good mechanical strengths, and low thermal conductivity. However, it still remains a great challenge to fabricate UV-blocking and strong transparent wood-based materials with isotropic optical and mechanical properties, mainly due to the natural anisotropy of wood. Herein, we describe a facile strategy to prepare transparent wood-based biocomposites by integrating delignified wood particles with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) impregnation prior to the compression treatment. This method enables biocomposites to show desirable isotropic optical and mechanical properties, easily tunable high wood component percentage and UV-blocking ability. The enhanced interfacial bonding between wood particles and PVA polymer, together with a similar refractive index, synergistically contributes to excellent performance. The resulting biocomposites (approximately thickness of 1 mm) possess isotropic optical and UV-blocking properties and have a maximum optical transmittance of 62%. The highest tensile strength and flexural strength can reach 86.8 and 158.8 MPa, respectively. Moreover, they display low thermal conductivity (0.38-0.42 W m(-1) k(-1)) and suitable thermal stability. Therefore, this study provides a new method to optimize the properties of transparent wood-based materials for utilization in energy-saving building fields.
One-step brush-coating strategy for low-haze and water-resistant transparent wood films

Abstract:The wood film (WF) fabricated by top-down wood nanotechnology possessed high mechanical strength, low energy consumption, environmental friendliness, and easy preparation, however, the high optical haze and poor water-resistant have seriously hindered its practical application. In this work, the epoxy resin was directly brushed on the surface of the WF, which can not only effectively reduce the haze of the WF, but also protect the WF to avoid the adverse effect of water on it. Compared with the untreated WF, the epoxy resin-coated wood film (WEF) showed low haze, which decreased from 76 % to 43 % at a wavelength of 550 nm. Meanwhile, the water-resistant property was effectively improved. The WEF could keep its shape intact and strength in agitated water, whereas the WF quickly disintegrated to form fine fibers. In addition, the longitudinal and transverse tensile strengths of the WEF were 157.2 MPa and 21.1 MPa. The WEF exhibited excellent optical properties, water-resistant performance, flexibility, and high strength, which could significantly broaden its application fields.

Abstract:Current energy and luminescent materials utilize polymers to encapsulate fluorescent carbon nanodots and dyes but they usually lack stability and biodegradability. Here, we introduce an alternative wood nanotechnology to produce luminescent films (veneer) with UV resistance and tailorable surface energy. First, fluorescent and transparent wood (FTW) is shown as a support of aggregation-induced fluorescent emission (AIE) by in-situ Hantzsch reaction of acetoacetate delignified wood (AA-DW). Highly aligned cellulose nanofibers present in AA-DW facilitate FTW densification, ensuing exceptional mechanical performance (tensile strength and Young's modulus of up to 422 MPa and 45 GPa, respectively). Simultaneously, the conjugated structures display high transparency (83 %), haze (80 %) and optical anisotropy. The new luminescent system is demonstrated to be biodegradable and effective in optical (fluorescent) windows as well as encrypted films.

Abstract:Plastic films with good robustness and electrical insulation are extensively applied in electrical equipment and electronic devices. However, the reliance on plastics for industrial production and the non-degradability of plastic waste have posed a threat to the environment and human health. Here, a green, sustainable, high-performance composite film has been synthesized to replace petroleum-based plastics by using resource-rich natural wood and mineral synthetic mica as raw materials. The wood scaffold with lamellar structure and oriented channels was obtained through wood nanotechnology, and then the mica sheets were fixed in it by impregnation with mica solution and subsequent mechanical pressing. The resulting Mica/wood films (MWF) exhibited excellent tensile properties (tensile strength of 124.57 MPa and modulus of 11.4 GPa) when the mica addition content was 7.09 wt%, which was better than most plastic films. Meanwhile, the breakdown voltage and thermal stability of MWF were improved with the addition of mica. Additionally, MWF exhibited much lower environmental impact than petrochemical plastic because it easily biodegraded in the soil. This work provided feasible strategy in fabricating environmentally friendly, high-performance bio-based insulating membranes for advanced electrical devices and electronics, demonstrating great potential for addressing resource scarcity and plastic pollution.

Abstract:Bamboo has higher strength, better toughness, and a shorter growth cycle than wood. It is of great significance to use top-down nanotechnology to construct high-performance bamboo film (BF) instead of petroleum-based plastic film. However, bamboo lacks lateral cell tissues, and its structure is prone to disintegration when the components are removed. Herein, slice bamboo veneers (SBV) were used as building blocks, and a sequential process of alkali pretreatment-crosslinking-delignification-compression densification was conducted to fabricate the high-performance BF. The oriented arrangement of nanofibers, highly dense microstructure, and a large number of hydrogen bonds between cellulose microfibrils endowed BF with anisotropic and excellent mechanical and optical properties. The longitudinal tensile strength and toughness of the prepared BF were 656.6 MPa and 33.7 MJ m-3, respectively, and its light transmittance and haze were 70.2% and 88.1%, respectively. In addition, BF has good thermal insulation with a thermal conductivity of 0.0857 W m-1 K- 1. The combined characteristics of BF, including high strength, high toughness, flexibility, anisotropy, high optical transmittance, and thermal insulation, make them suitable to be applied as optoelectronic substrates, insulating building materials, and green packaging materials.
Biodegradable, superhydrophobic walnut wood membrane for the separation of oil/water mixtures

Abstract:The preparation of environmentally friendly oil/water separation materials remains a great challenge. Freeze-drying of wood after lignin removal yields wood aerogels, which can be used as substrates to prepare fluorine-free environmentally friendly superhydrophobic materials, However, they are more suitable for absorption rather than filtration applications due to their poor strength. A study using cross-sections of pristine wood chips as substrates retains the original strength of wood, but the use of the cross-sectional of wood pieces limits their thickness, strength, and size. In this paper, a degradable fluorine-free superhydrophobic film (max. water contact angle of approximately 164.2°) with self-cleaning and abrasion resistance characteristics was prepared by a one-step method using pristine and activated walnut longitudinal section films as the substrate, with tetraethyl orthosilicate as a precursor and dodecyltriethoxysilane as a modifier. The tensile strength results show that superhydrophobic films with pristine or activated wood substrates maintained the strength of pristine wood and were 2.2 times stronger than the wood aerogel substrate. In addition, after cross-laminating the two samples, the films had the ability to separate oil and water by continuous filtration with high efficiency (98.5%) and flux (approximately 1.3 × 10 3 L·m − ·h −1 ). The method has potential for the large-scale fabrication of degradable superhydrophobic filtration separation membranes.

Abstract:Bioplastics (BPs) prepared from lignocellulose are an excellent replacement for petrochemical-plastics (PCPs) due to their renewability and biodegradability. The presence of residual/added/regenerated lignin reduced the water sensitivity; however, these BPs possessed a deep color and low transmittance and were prone to photodegradation. Herein, we developed a UV- and water-insensitive, colorless, transparent, and sustainable wood-derived BP (W-BP) by pressing delignified wood (DW) with 0.21% lignin and abundant hydrophobic crystal plane (200) of cellulose. The DW was obtained by the pretreatment of the wood sample with NaOH/Na2SO3 followed by H2O2 steam conditioning. The abundant hydrophobic crystal plane (200) of cellulose in DW was demonstrated by a large ratio of the crystal plane (200) to (110), the presence of two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets of defibrated cellulose, and a low moisture uptake of 8.7% of the freeze-dried DW. The aged W-BP with a thickness of about 50 μm displayed good photostability with a ΔE* value of 2.3 and a transparency of 84% transmittance at 550 nm. Additionally, W-BP also possessed water stability with a wet tensile strength of 74 MPa and a low water uptake of 28.3%. These values exceeded those of lignocellulosic BPs and some commercial PCPs. The W-BP could replace transparent PCPs and provide indirectly experimental support to the lignin–cellulose interaction.
