Abstract:Underwater acoustic channels are characterized by limited bandwidth, long multipath delay spread, and severe time variation, which make reliable and high-rate communication challenging. Channel-estimate-based equalization is a key technique for compensating for distortions introduced by the channel. In this paper, low complexity algorithms for estimation and equalization of doubly spread underwater acoustic channels are presented. By exploiting the sparsity in the delay-Doppler domain, a fast projected gradient method (FPGM) is developed for estimating the delay-Doppler spread function of a time-varying channel. The FPGM formulates sparse channel estimation as a complex-valued convex optimization using an ℓ1-norm constraint. Unlike the conventional methods that split the complex variables into their real and imaginary parts, the FPGM directly handles the complex variables as a whole. A unified framework, which includes the time-reversal, linear MMSE, and decision feedback equalizer, is also proposed for fast equalization of doubly spread channels. By exploiting the special block Toeplitz-like structure of the coefficient matrix, the computational complexity of channel estimation and equalization is on the order of LNlog N, where L is the dimension of the Doppler shift and N is the signal length. Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel Turbo equalization algorithm based on compressive sensing (CS) sparse channel estimation in wideband high frequency (HF) systems. Taking full advantage of the time-domain-sparsity of the wideband-HF channel, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) sparse channel estimation based on compressive sensing (CS) effectively reduce the number of pilots to estimate the wideband-HF channel. Besides, the novel algorithm resists the intersymbol interference (ISI) and the inter-carrier interference (ICI) by taking Turbo equalization. Simulation has shown that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the system performance, comparing with the normal Minimum Mean-Square-Error (MMSE) equalizer based on the Least Square (LS) channel estimation.

Abstract:The estimation of doubly spread underwater acoustic channels is addressed. By exploiting the sparsity in the delay-Doppler domain, this paper proposes a fast projected gradient method (FPGM) that can handle complex-valued data for estimating the delay-Doppler spread function of a time-varying channel. The proposed FPGM formulates the sparse channel estimation as a complex-valued convex optimization using an l(1)-norm constraint. Conventional approaches to complex-valued optimization split the complex variables into their real and imaginary parts; this doubles the dimension compared with the original problem and may break the special data structure. Simulation results verify the accuracy and efficiency of the FPGM, indicating that is robust to parameter selection and is orders-of-magnitude faster than standard convex optimization algorithms. Turbo Equalization Based on Factor Graphs for Underwater Acoustic Communication Systems

Abstract:Underwater acoustic channels usually suffer from the extended multipath propagation which causes inter symbol interference (ISI). At the receiving end, serious ISI would result in the decrease of the reliability of underwater acoustic communication systems. In this paper, Turbo equalization is applied to increase the reliability of communication systems. The realization of the channel equalizer in Turbo equalization is the linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) estimate. To avoid performance loss, Turbo equalization and factor graph are combined together which provides a full-window method. Moreover, a modified extrinsic information feedback mechanism of turbo equalization is proposed. The reliability of communication systems is further enhanced by using this mechanism. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs well with low complexity. This demonstrates the potential of the suggested algorithm in practice.

Abstract:This article investigates a robust receiver scheme for a single carrier, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) underwater acoustic (UWA) communications, which uses the sparse Bayesian learning algorithm for iterative channel estimation embedded in Turbo equalization (TEQ). We derive a block-wise sparse Bayesian learning framework modeling the spatial correlation of the MIMO UWA channels, where a more robust expectation-maximization algorithm is proposed for updating the joint estimates of channel impulse response, residual noise, and channel covariance matrix. By exploiting the spatially correlated sparsity of MIMO UWA channels and the second-order a priori channel statistics from the training sequence, the proposed Bayesian channel estimator enjoys not only relatively low complexity but also more stable control of the hyperparameters that determine the channel sparsity and recovery accuracy. Moreover, this article proposes a low complexity space-time soft decision feedback equalizer (ST-SDFE) with successive soft interference cancellation. Evaluated by the undersea 2008 Surface Processes and Acoustic Communications Experiment, the improved sparse Bayesian learning channel estimation algorithm outperforms the conventional Bayesian algorithms in terms of the robustness and complexity, while enjoying better estimation accuracy than the orthogonal matching pursuit and the improved proportionate normalized least mean squares algorithms. We have also verified that the proposed ST-SDFE TEQ significantly outperforms the low-complexity minimum mean square error TEQ in terms of the bit error rate and error propagation.
Joint Channel Estimation and Turbo Equalization of Single-Carrier Systems over Time-Varying Channels

Abstract:Block transmission systems have been proven successful over frequency-selective channels. For time-varying channel such as in high-speed mobile communication and underwater communication, existing equalizers assume that channels over different data frames are independent. However, the real-world channels over different data frames are correlated, thereby indicating potentials for performance improvement. In this paper, we propose a joint channel estimation and equalization/decoding algorithm for a single-carrier system that exploits temporal correlations of channel between transmitted data frames. Leveraging the concept of dynamic compressive sensing, our method can utilize the information of several data frames to achieve better performance. The information not only passes between the channel and symbol, but also the channels over different data frames. Numerical simulations using an extensively validated underwater acoustic model with a time-varying channel establish that the proposed algorithm outperforms the former bilinear generalized approximate message passing equalizer and classic minimum mean square error turbo equalizer in bit error rate and channel estimation normalized mean square error. The algorithm idea we present can also find applications in other bilinear multiple measurements vector compressive sensing problems.

Abstract:In this paper, the estimation of doubly spread acoustic channels is investigated. By parameterizing the amplitude variation and delay variation of each path with polynomial approximation, this paper derives a mathematical model for the discrete-time channel input-output relationship tailored to single-carrier block transmissions. Based on the mathematical model, the channel estimation problem is transformed into estimation of the low-dimensional parameter sets (amplitude, delay, Doppler scale) that characterize the channel. A two-stage sparse channel estimation technique is then developed, which estimates the delay and Doppler scale sequentially. Compared to the one-stage joint estimation, the two-stage estimation approach greatly reduces the number of candidates on the delay-Doppler scale grid searched by the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm, that is, the dictionary size is reduced dramatically. As a result, the computational complexity is much lower. Further, the two-stage approach demonstrated higher levels of accuracy in computer simulations and led to better detection performance when applied to experimental data.
A Turbo decoding structure with iterative equalization for shallow water acoustic channels

Abstract:A new Turbo decoding structure with an iterative decision feedback equalizer (DFE) for shallow water acoustic channels was built based on the consideration of the channels' characteristics of long time-delay and strong multipath, and its performances were simulated. In this new structure, the conventional Turbo decoder is modified to generate both information and parity bits, and these bits are first passed to the hard decision, the symbol mapping, then channel interleaving, and then fed back to the DFE to implement the new Turbo decoding structure with the iterative DFE. The simulations show that the new structure can improve the anti multipath performance of the system. When signal to noise ratio (SNR) is greater than 4 dB, the bit error rates (BER) is less than 10-5, and the gain in SNR achieved is 2.5 dB greater compared to the conventional structure of the Turbo decoder with DFE in five-path shallow water acoustic channel of the Xiamen harbor.

Abstract:Some turbo equalizers with perfect performance, such as the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) equalizer and the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) turbo equalizer, are difficult to apply to certain wireless communication systems with large delay spread, due to their prohibitive complexity. By contrast, turbo equalization based on soft intersymbol interference (ISI) cancellation is much simpler; however, its performance is very poor. To avoid the shortcomings of the above equalizers, a novel equalization scheme is presented in this paper. The proposed method lies on an extension of soft ISI cancellation paradigm in the sense that the matched filter output is used to estimate the transmitter symbol. While the original method employs single output in the estimation, the number of outputs in the proposed method can vary depending on the delay spread of the channel. The extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart analyses and the simulation results show that the performance of the presented equalizer is much better than that of the original turbo equalization based on soft ISI cancellation, and it is only slightly more complex. The new turbo equalization scheme can perform as well as MMSE turbo equalization, but is simpler.

Abstract:In this paper, a joint channel estimation and turbo equalization scheme is proposed with low complexity and high accuracy for doubly selective fading channels. Based on the traditional data frame, by adding several pre-training sequences, the spectral efficiency is improved in the proposed two stage scheme. In the first stage, with the adaptive subblock-wise inverse QR recursive least square (IQR-RLS) filter, more trustworthy estimated values of the channel coefficients are generated with a non-priori model compared with the first order autoregressive (AR) modeling extended Kalman filter (EKF), based on complex exponential basis expansion models (CE-BEMs). Particularly, the calculation of operations is significantly reduced. In the second stage, a turbo equalizer is provided by utilizing a non-linear Kalman filter, which has a remarkable improvement in BER performance over EKF. Furthermore, complexity analysis is presented and illustrates the advantage of the proposed scheme. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:In this article, a multitask sparse Bayesian learning channel estimation based on factor graphs (MT-SBL-FG) for turbo equalization (TEQ) in underwater acoustic (UWA) communications is proposed. Based on the framework of multitask sparse Bayesian learning, the received data are divided into subblocks and the channel estimation (CE) of each subblock is regarded as a task. Considering the time-varying channel in UWA communications and the CE error in turbo equalization, a factor graph is proposed for the multitask CE of the subblocks. Based on the factor graph, a message-passing algorithm with weighting factor is derived. The performance of channel estimation is improved by utilizing the temporal correlation between the subblocks and the sparsity of the UWA channel. The proposed algorithm has been tested by the underwater trial data collected in an experiment conducted in Qiandao Lake, Hangzhou, China, in May 2016. We have verified that the proposed algorithm outperforms other CE algorithms in terms of the bit error rate (BER).

Abstract:Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) using submarine optical cables is a new marine technology for large-scale underwater data transmission and data collection of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). However, the shallow water surroundings and the mobility of AUVs cause severe multipath propagation and Doppler effect, resulting in sound signal distortion in the delay and Doppler domains when sound waves reach the submarine optical cable. In this paper, we propose an underwater acoustic equalization method based on channel shortening to mitigate these issues. We use frequency-domain decision feedback equalization (FD-DFE) for channel shortening to suppress multipaths and lower the Doppler spread of the channel, followed by time-domain decision feedback equalization based on recursive least square (RLS-DFE) to eliminate residual delay and Doppler spreads. This dual decision feedback equalization (DDFE) approach combines block- and symbol-wise equalization and demonstrates robustness through numerical simulations. In the reservoir experiment, the DDFE method increased the output signal-to-noise ratio by an average 4.5 dB compared to the traditional method for medium-rate communications at 3 kbps, and reduced the bit error rate by 60%.

Abstract:This paper proposes a Turbo equalization algorithm,which consists of Kalman Filter channel tracing and soft-output decision-feedback equalization (DFE) and soft-input soft-output channel decoding,to realize iterative channel estimation,channel equalization and channel decoding for frequency-selective fast-fading channels.The simulations show the proposed algorithm can efficiently trace the fast-fading channel and reduce greatly the inter-symbol interference (ISI) after two iterations.

Abstract:Turbo equalization is an iterative technique for the equalization and decoding of data that has been transmitted over the inter-symbol interference (ISI) channels. A number of suboptimal and low-complexity equalization algorithms have been developed to replace the optimal maximum a probability (MAP) equalizer. In this paper, we present an improved turbo minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) equalization algorithm in frequency domain. It is motivated by the existing turbo MMSE frequency domain equalization algorithm and further improved to perform well even in the severe frequency-selective channels while keeping a comparable complexity. Simulation results show that the new algorithm achieves a performance gain of 1.6 dB in Proakis B channel and 2.4 dB in Proakis C channel in comparison with the existing algorithm.

Abstract:Underwater Acoustic Channels (UAC) have inherent sparse characteristics. The traditional adaptive equalization techniques do not utilize this feature to improve the performance. In this paper we consider the Variable Adaptive Subgradient Projection (V-ASPM) method to derive a new sparse equalization algorithm based on the Minimum Symbol Error Rate (MSER) criterion. Compared with the original MSER algorithm, our proposed scheme adds sparse matrix to the iterative formula, which can assign independent step-sizes to the equalizer taps. How to obtain such proper sparse matrix is also analyzed. On this basis, the selection scheme of the sparse matrix is obtained by combining the variable step-sizes and equalizer sparsity measure. We call the new algorithm Sparse-Control Proportional-MSER (SC-PMSER) equalizer. Finally, the proposed SC-PMSER equalizer is embedded into a turbo receiver, which perform turbo decoding, Digital Phase-Locked Loop (DPLL), time-reversal receiving and multi-reception diversity. Simulation and real-field experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance in convergence speed and Bit Error Rate (BER).

Abstract:In this paper, a novel frequency domain direct adaptive turbo equalizer (FDDA-TEQ) is proposed for time-varying underwater acoustic (UWA) channels. The proposed equalizer uses a modified frequency domain block normalized least mean square (FBNLMS) algorithm to update filter coefficients, which can effectively solve the problem of insufficient filter length in traditional adaptive frequency domain equalization. A sliding window strategy is adopted to deal with the rapid time-varying characteristic of UWA channels. Meanwhile, an iterative structure in the equalizer is proposed to further improve performance. The proposed method (FDDA-TEQ) is tested by simulation and the data collected in the real-world underwater experiments. Both simulation and experimental results can prove the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Abstract:An efficient frequency-domain equalizer is developed for single-carrier (SC) aided spatial modulation (SM) systems over frequency-selective fading channels, by employing the idea of expectation propagation (EP) algorithms. Specifically, we design an EP-aided frequency domain turbo equalizer (EP-FDTE) for iterative information exchange between the equalizer and the soft decoder, leading to more reliable a posterior probability (APP) estimation for signal detection. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed equalizer outperforms conventional frequency-domain turbo equalizer (FDTE) and generalized approximate message passing (GAMP)-aided turbo equalizer for SC-SM transmission.
Doubly-Iterative Sparsified MMSE Turbo Equalization for OTFS Modulation

Abstract:Currently, orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has drawn much attention to reliable communications in high-mobility scenarios. This paper proposes a doubly-iterative sparsified minimum mean square error (DI-S-MMSE) turbo equalizer, which iteratively exchanges the extrinsic information between a soft-input-soft-input (SISO) MMSE estimator and a SISO decoder. Our proposed equalizer does not suffer from short loops and approaches the performance of the near-optimal symbol-wise maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm. To exploit the inherent sparsity of OTFS system, we resort to graph theory to investigate the sparsity pattern of the channel matrix, and propose two sparsification guidelines to reduce the complexity of calculating the matrix inverse at the MMSE estimator. Then, we apply two iterative algorithms to MMSE estimation, i.e., the Generalized Minimal Residual (GMRES) and Factorized Sparse Approximate Inverse (FSPAI) algorithms. The former is used at the initial turbo iteration, whose global convergence is proven in our equalizer, while the latter is used at the subsequent turbo iterations with the help of our proposed guidelines. Simulation results demonstrate that our equalizer has a linear order of complexity while the performance loss incurred by the sparsification is only 0.2 dB at $10^{-4}$ bit error rate. Abstract:A Turbo equalizer based on LDPC coded on GF(q) over frequency selective fading channels is proposed in this paper. In such a case,it can be view as a serially concatenated structure in which the q-LDPC coder is used as outer-code and the channel expanded serve as inner code.At the receiver,the iterative detection algorithm is presented.Simulation results show that the scheme yields tremendous improvement and outperforms the convolution coded Turbo equalizer 2 dB.

Abstract:Close to saturation operation of high power amplifier (HPA) leads to strong nonlinear and dispersive characteristic of satellite channels. At the receiver, the observation signals are distorted by not only the linear inter-symbol interference (ISI) but also the nonlinear ones, which makes it challenge to perform optimal detection. In this paper, we study factor graph (FG)-based turbo equalization for nonlinear satellite channels characterized by Volterra series. Factor nodes on FG are classified into belief propagation (BP) set and variational message passing (VMP) set to enable low complexity combined message passing implementation while with high performance. BP is used on the hard constraint nodes, such as demapping and decoding, while VMP is employed to update messages of the likelihood function node. It is shown that, without any approximation on the Volterra series channel model, messages can be expressed in a closed form via canonical parameters, and the extrinsic information from equalizer to decoder is derived in an explicit way. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed combined VMP-BP algorithm with low computational complexity.
