Abstract:It is highly desired to design and develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reactions. Herein, we report the development of ultrafine PtCo alloy nanoparticle decorated one-dimensional Co nanowires grown on Ti mesh (PtCo-Co/TiM). Owing to its favorable composition and structure, the PtCo-Co/TiM can deliver an ultrahigh current density of 46.5 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of 70 mV in 1.0 M KOH, superior to recently reported Pt-based electrocatalysts. This catalyst also provides excellent long-term electrochemical durability with its catalytic activity being maintained for at least 50 h.

Abstract:The development of an efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) that can be widely applied in industrial settings poses a multifaceted challenge. This research involved fabricating a NiCo-LDH/Cu electrode as a self-supported catalyst for hydrogen evolution on nickel foam using a solvothermal method and constant potential electrodeposition. In comparison to the NiCu electrocatalyst produced through a single-step electrodeposition, the NiCo-LDH/Cu hydrogen evolution electrode prepared via this combined approach exhibited significant electrocatalytic performance for HER in an alkaline electrolyte. The NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode requires only an overpotential of 78.0 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 in 1 M KOH. The current density required to catalyze the hydrogenation reaction is reduced by 64 % compared to pure nickel foam. This reduction accelerates the hydrogenation catalytic reaction and enhances electrochemical stability. The remarkable HER efficiency of the NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode primarily stems from the increased active surface area facilitated by the LDH structure and the synergistic impact generated during the NiCu co-deposition process. This work shows an economical and practical method for developing efficient non-precious metal catalytic electrodes.

Abstract:It is critical to produce highly efficient, inexpensive and long-term durability non-noble metal catalysts for hydrogen production by water electrolysis on basis of renewable energy. In this study, the porous flake heterostructured NiCoP grown directly on porous networked Ni foam (NiCoP/NF) was obtained by the hydrothermal and phosphating method. As electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the impact of Ni/Co ratios on NiCoP/NF catalytic performance was studied in 1.0 M KOH. Electrochemical measurement results display that the HER catalytic activity of NiCoP/NF increased first and then decreased with the decrease of Ni in the Ni/Co ratio. The NiCoP/NF1–3 catalyst (Ni/Co = 1:3) exhibited the highest performance for HER. A low overpotential of 99 mV at 10 mA cm−2 was achieved with the Tafel slope of 65.4 mV dec−1. In addition, porous flake heterostructured NiCoP/NF1–3 showed a good stability in alkaline condition, which maintained 20 h for stable water electrolysis at 10 mA cm−2. This present study will pave the way for the porous flake architecture development with high-performance HER in alkaline water electrolysis.

Abstract:The development of non-noble metal hydrogen evolution catalysts that can replace Pt is crucial for efficient hydrogen production. Herein, we develop a type of well-dispersed Ni2P on N-doped nanomesh carbon (NC) electrocatalyst by a facile pyrolysis method, which shows excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic performance. It is rather remarkable that the overpotential of Ni2P/NC prepared under optimal proportion is 108 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 current density in 1 M KOH solution with the tafel slope of 67.3 mV·dec−1, the catalytic activity has no significant attenuation after 1000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry (CV)method. The hydrogen evolution performance of the electrocatalytic is better than most similar catalysts in alkaline media. The unique mesh structure of the carbon component in the catalyst facilitates the exposure of the active site and reduces the impedance, which improves the efficiency of electron transport as well as ensuring the stability of the hydrogen evolution reaction. In addition, we prove that nitrogen doping and pore structure are also important factors affecting catalytic activity by control experiments. Our results show that N-doped nanomesh carbon, as an efficient support, combined with Ni2P nanoparticles is of great significance for the development of efficient hydrogen evolution electrodes.

Nonetheless, it remains a great challenge due to the lack of simple, cheap, and high-efficient electrocatalysts. Here, we successfully develop a simple and scalable electro-deposition and subsequent phosphorization route to fabricate Ni-doped Co 2 P (Ni-Co 2 P) nanosheets catalyst using the in-situ released Ni species from defective Ni foam as metal source. Impressively, the as-synthesized Ni-Co 2 P catalyst exhibits excellent electrochemical 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HOR) performance with > 99% 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid yield and > 97% Faradaic efficiency at an ultralow potential of 1.29 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Experimental characterization and theoretical calculation reveal that the atomically doped Ni species can enhance the adsorption of reactant and thus lower the reaction energy barriers. By coupling the electrocatalytic HOR with HER, the employed two-electrode system using Ni-Co 2 P and commercial Ni foam as anode and cathode, respectively, exhibits a low cell voltage of 1.53 V to drive a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 , which is 90 mV lower than that of pure water splitting. This work provides a facile and efficient approach for the preparation of high-performance earth-abundant electrocatalysts toward the concurrent production of H 2 and value-added chemicals.

Abstract:Developing user-friendly electrodes for efficiently producing hydrogen from water to substitute non-renewable fossil fuels is one of the challenges in the hydrogen energy field. For the first time, we have prepared self-supporting ultrahigh porosity cobalt foam loaded with NiCoP/NiOOH nanoflowers (NiCoP/CF) via freeze-drying and phosphorization. The as-prepared hierarchical NiCoP/CF electrodes showed superior catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. The one resulted from phosphorization at 350 °C (NiCoP/CF-350) only required overpotential of -47, and -126 mV to deliver geometrical current density of -10 mA cm-2 and -100 mA cm-2, respectively, demonstrating improved catalytic activity than the electrodes prepared using a commercial nickel foam as a support. Moreover, it could retain its superior stability at a current density higher than 500 mAcm-2 for 16 h. Such an outstanding performance can be attributed to the ultrahigh porosity of Co foam support, optimal adsorption energies of HER intermediates (H*), facile water dissociation on the NiCoP/NiOOH hetero-interfaces, and the assistance of NiOOH facilitating the electrons transfer from the Co foam inside to the NiCoP outside. The work would provide a new strategy for future design of advanced HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The design of efficient, stable and cost-effective electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction holds substantial significance in water electrolysis, but it remains challenging. Tremella-like nickel-molybdenum bimetal phosphide encapsulated cobalt phosphide (NiMoP/CoP) with hierarchical architectures has been effectively synthesized on nickel foam (NF) via a straightforward hydrothermal followed by low-temperature phosphating method. Based on the unique structural benefits, it significantly increases the number of redox active centers, enhances the electrical conductivity of materials, and diminishes the ion diffusion path lengths, thereby promoting efficient electrolyte penetration and reducing the inherent resistance. The as-obtained NiMoP/CoP/NF electrocatalyst exhibited remarkable catalytic activity with an ultralow overpotential of 38 mV (10 mA cm-2) and low Tafel slope of 83 mV dec-1. The straightforward synthesis process and exceptional electrocatalytic properties of NiMoP/CoP/NF demonstrate great potential for the HER to replace the precious metal catalyst.

Abstract:Low cost and highly efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are crucially important for the commercial production of hydrogen. In the present work, we prepared a nanoporous NiO/Al3Ni2 catalyst using a facile electrochemical dealloying method. Due to the large surface area, fast gas releasing, and the synergistic effects of NiO and Al3Ni2, the nanoporous NiO/Al3Ni2 catalyst exhibits remarkable HER activity with the overpotential of 66 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and good long-time stability in alkaline conditions. The nanoporous NiO/Al3Ni2 catalyst has higher current density than the commercial Pt/C under high overpotential over 105 mV. Ni sites on the exposed active (100) surface of Al3Ni2 exhibit a moderate hydrogen adsorption energy. NiO effectively promotes water splitting and prevents intermediate poisoning on the Al3Ni2 active sites. Al3Ni2 improves the conductivity of the catalyst. This work provides a guidance for the design and development of non-noble HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:As one of the most sustainable, efficient, and cleanest ways for hydrogen production, electrochemical water splitting relies heavily on cost-efficient and stable electrocatalysts. Herein, a self-supported and nitrogen-doped hybrid CoP/Ni2P was synthesized through a simple two-step hydrothermal process followed by low-temperature phosphorization and nitridation (N-CoP/Ni2P@NF). Both experimental and density functional theory calculation results suggest that nitrogen doping can tune the electrical structure of the CoP/Ni2P heterostructure and thus optimize the free energy of adsorbed H on the surface of N-CoP/Ni2P@NF and accelerate the electronic transport activity. The prepared N-CoP/Ni2P@NF exhibits excellent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, which merely requires an overpotential of -46 mV at -10 mA cm-2 and shows a negligible decay after a long durability test for 72 h in alkaline (1.0 M KOH) media. Consequently, this work supplies a novel strategy with great potential for designing transition metal phosphate-based catalysts with high HER performance.

Abstract:Developing efficient and robust electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for the widespread application of hydrogen energy. However, conventional synthetic methods usually require high energy consumption and cost, and large-scale production at ambient temperature remains a challenge. In this work, we propose two facile room-temperature synthetic methods to fabricate Pt/NiCo LDH as an efficient cathode for enhanced HER. Theoretical calculations firstly predict that Pt/NiCo LDH shows optimized electronic structure, strong metal-substrate interaction, and balanced hydrogen adsorption/desorption. Subsequently, Pt/dNiCo LDH and Pt/eNiCo LDH with distinct but uniform nanostructures are obtained by electrodeposition and etching. Notably, Pt/dNiCo LDH exhibits ultra-low overpotentials of 26 mV and 91 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 with excellent stability in 1 M KOH, which is superior to Pt/C and most reported catalysts. Moreover, the Pt/NiCo LDH-based electrolyzers require low cell voltages (1.55 V and 1.53 V at 10 mA cm −2 ) analogous to Pt/C||RuO 2 (1.57 V) for overall water splitting. This study paves the way for designing and preparing high-efficiency HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The utilization of Pt nanoparticles as catalysts in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a widely adopted strategy for hydrogen production. Nonetheless, the reduction of Pt usage costs and enhancement of its durability are crucial factors that need to be addressed in order to facilitate the commercialization of these catalysts. In this study, Pt–Co(OH) 2 @CoMoO 4 /NF has been developed and synthesized on nickel foam (NF) through the implementation of hydrothermal and electrodeposition techniques. Cobalt molybdate is subjected to surface reconstruction of the precatalyst by anion etching under electrodeposition conditions to form hydroxides nanosheets, and the ultra-low content of Pt nanoparticles (0.25 wt%) was uniformly dispersed on the CoMoO 4 nanoarrays and Co(OH) 2 nanosheets subsequently. Detailed experimental characterization showed that low Pt loading promoted charge transfer, accelerated the Heyrovsky step of HER, and surface reconstruction increased oxygen vacancies. Pt–Co(OH) 2 @CoMoO 4 /NF exhibited an overpotential of 100 mV at current densities of 100 mA cm −2 , while lasting this current density for a duration of 100 h. At higher current densities, the electrocatalytic activity of Pt–Co(OH) 2 @CoMoO 4 /NF surpassed that of the commercially accessible 20 wt% Pt/C. Our work offers a viable approach towards designing efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen production base on platinum.

Abstract:It is significant but challenging to develop noble-metal-free electrocatalysts exhibiting high activity and long-term stability toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to satisfy the ever-increasing demand for clean and renewable energy. Herein, an environment-friendly and low-temperature electroless deposition method is developed for the synthesis of Co–Ni–P hollow nanospheres anchored on reduced graphene oxide nanosheets (Co–Ni–P/RGO). By optimizing the molar ratio of Ni/Co precursor, composition dependent electrocatalytic performances toward HER of nanostructured Co–Ni–P/RGO electrocatalyst are investigated in 1.0 M KOH solution. The results suggest that when the molar ratio of Ni/Co precursor is 3/7, as-prepared ternary Co–Ni–P/RGO electrocatalyst exhibits a remarkably enhanced HER activity in comparison to binary Ni–P/RGO and Co–P/RGO electrocatalysts, delivering a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at the overpotential of only 207 mV. The value of Tafel slope for nanostructured Co–Ni–P/RGO electrocatalyst reveals that HER process undergoes Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism. Besides, nanostructured Co–Ni–P/RGO electrocatalyst features superior stability under alkaline condition. The results suggest that nanostructured composite of Co–Ni–P hollow nanospheres/RGO is a potential candidate for hydrogen production through water splitting.

Abstract:Pt-based catalysts are regarded as state-of-the-art electrocatalysts for producing clean hydrogen energy; however, their wide application is restricted by their low abundance, high cost, and poor stability. Herein, we report an integrated PtxCoy-hierarchical carbon matrix electrocatalyst (Pt/Co@NCNTs, Pt3Co@NCNTs, PtCo@NCNTs, and PtCo3@NCNTs) that is developed using a thermally driven Co migration strategy forming alloy nanoparticles to achieve efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Benefiting from its electronic regulation effect and unique hierarchical hollow structure, the Pt3Co@NCNTs catalyst loaded with 11.5 wt % Pt exhibits superior catalytic performance and durability for HER compared with commercial 20 wt % Pt/C. Under both alkaline and acidic conditions, Pt3Co@NCNTs exhibits excellent HER activity with overpotentials of 21 and 45 mV at 10 mA cm-2, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) results further verify that the interaction between Pt and Co in Pt3Co@NCNTs can modulate electronic rearrangement, optimize the d-band center, and accelerate water dissociation and *H desorption, thereby enhancing HER activity.
Multi‐Phase Heterostructure of CoNiP/Co x P for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Under Alkaline and Seawater Conditions by Promoting H 2 O Dissociation

Abstract:Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a key step for electrochemical energy conversion and storage. Developing well defined nanostructures as noble‐metal‐free electrocatalysts for HER is promising for the application of hydrogen technology. Herein, it is reported that 3D porous hierarchical CoNiP/CoxP multi‐phase heterostructure on Ni foam via an electrodeposition method followed by phosphorization exhibits ultra‐highly catalytic activity for HER. The optimized CoNiP/CoxP multi‐phase heterostructure achieves an excellent HER performance with an ultralow overpotential of 36 mV at 10 mA cm−2, superior to commercial Pt/C. Importantly, the multi‐phase heterostructure shows exceptional stability as confirmed by the long‐term potential cycles (30,000 cycles) and extended electrocatalysis (up to 500 h) in alkaline solution and natural seawater. Experimental characterizations and DFT calculations demonstrate that the strong electronic interaction at the heterointerface of CoNiP/CoP is achieved via the electron transfer from CoNiP to the heterointerface, which directly promotes the dissociation of water at heterointerface and desorption of hydrogen on CoNiP. These findings may provide deep understanding on the HER mechanism of heterostructure electrocatalysts and guidance on the design of earth‐abundant, cost‐effective electrocatalysts with superior HER activity for practical applications.

Abstract:The development of low-cost and highly active electrocatalysts for two half reactions: H-2 and O-2 evolution reactions (HER and OER), is still a huge challenge to realize water splitting. Herein, we report that CoP nanoparticles (NPs) can act as a bifunctional catalyst for both HER and OER Particularly, ultrafine CoP NPs decorated on N doped multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) exhibit remarkable catalytic performance for OER in 0.1 M NaOH aqueous solution, with a low onset overpotential of 290 mV, a Tafel slope of 50 mV dec(-1), an overpotential (eta) of 330 mV at 10 mA cm(-2), and approximately 100% Faradaic efficiency, paralleling the performance of state-of-the-art Co based OER catalysts including Co3O4, CoSe2, and Co-Pi. The hybrid catalyst is capable of maintaining a high catalytic current density for at least 10 h without any loss of catalytic activity. Meanwhile, the noble metal-free catalyst also shows good activity and duarability for HER under the same basic condition.

Abstract:Electrocatalytically hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is most promising approach for the large-scale generation of hydrogen, but the prohibitive and scarce Pt-based electrocatalyst therein greatly restricts the advancement of hydrogen-related technology. Exploring low-cost electrocatalysts with superior activity and stability at different applicable conditions is being of great concern. Herein, we controllably synthesized highly dispersed ~3 nm cobalt metaphosphate (Co(PO3)2) nanoparticles embedded in N,P,S-tridoped carbon by a facile two-step mixing and pyrolysis method. The resultant nanocomposite with hierarchical microflower morphology assembled by the tridoped carbon nanosheets dotted with ultrafine Co(PO3)2 particles, showing superior all-pH activity, and particularly a better alkaline large-current-density activity than Pt/C. The ultrasmall Co(PO3)2 particles together with abundant phosphate groups and heteroatom dopants synergistically afford highly active catalytic centers for HER, as well as the all-pH robust stability of which endowed by the encapsulation of tridoped carbon. The mesoporous carbon composite nanosheets integrate into open and accessible microflower structures and thus facilitate the unhampered mass and charge transfer.
