Abstract:The resolution of reconstructed images is significantly limited by the size of captured holograms in digital holography. A multiplane digital holographic algorithm based on extrapolation iterations is proposed herein. Holograms at different axial distances are captured with a shifting imaging sensor and then extrapolated to a larger hologram after padding. Multiple holograms provide multipoint constraints in diffraction calculation. Constraints based on the energy distribution and transmissions of an object are applied to extract the object function from the holograms. The method achieves a higher convergence speed for solving the inverse problem compared with the single-plane extrapolation method. We demonstrate that the reconstruction in multiple planes yields a better resolution than that in one plane.

Abstract:Digital holography enables the digitization processing of holograms. The resolution of the reconstructed image is greatly limited by the pixelated imaging detectors. To improve the resolution, a bicubic interpolation and extrapolation iteration (BIPEPI) method is proposed to compensate the limited size of the digital holograms. Based on the prior knowledge of the model of Fresnel zone plate with circular diffraction gratings, the pixel density is increased by the bicubic interpolation (BIP) method inside the hologram to enhance the low-frequency terms of the object. With extrapolation iterations (EPI) method, more high order fringes outside the hologram are generated to enhance the high-frequency terms of the object. The resolution of the reconstructed image can be effectively improved by combining this predicted low- and high-frequency terms. Numerical simulations and optical experiments are presented and the feasibility of the proposed method is quantitatively evaluated.

Abstract:Digital holography enables the digitization processing of holograms. The resolution of the reconstructed image is greatly limited by the pixelated imaging detectors. This work investigates the effect of the initial hologram size on the imaging point spread function and introduces a bicubic interpolation and extrapolation iterative (BIPEPI) method. It circumvented the recording limitation in a certain extent to obtain more wave field information beyond the experimental recording area. The bicubic interpolation (BIP) method increases the pixel density inside the hologram to enhance the low-frequency terms of the object. With extrapolation iterative (EPI) method, more high order fringes around the experimental hologram are generated to enhance the high-frequency terms of the object. This method can improve the point spread function of small size detector to effectively increase the reconstructed resolution.

Abstract:A fast and high-resolution reconstruction algorithm with variable resolution increasing ratio and down-sampling ratio is proposed. Since the digital holography requires that the space-bandwidth product of the recording system should be greater than that of the object so as to ensure no loss of information, usually much redundant information and pixels exist in the recorded digital hologram. According to that, we propose utilizing a flexible down-sampling process with variable ratio to eliminate the redundancy. The technical characteristics are analyzed. The validity of this method is shown by both calculations based on theory analysis and experimental results.

Abstract:Digital holographic imaging has the characteristics of fast and flexible with simple set up, and it can quantitatively obtain the intensity and phase of objects. The resolution of the reconstructed image is greatly limited by the pixelated imaging detectors during the digitization processing of holograms. Due to the limited diffraction bandwidth, the diffracted beam of each object point can be viewed as a diffractive cone. The lack of diffraction components causes the reconstructed quality to decrease when the detector cannot collect a complete diffracted wave field in the inline holography. In this work, we studied the reconstructed quality of holograms under different sampling forms. The losing diffraction components can be reconstructed by using an iterative algorithm based on energy attenuation and support constraints. We propose three iterative methods. The first is the bicubic interpolation and extrapolation iterative method based on a single small detector. The second is multi-plane extrapolation iterative method. The third is a faithful iterative reconstruction based on a sparse sensor array. When the diffraction component recorded by the hologram is missing, the losing diffraction components can be reconstructed by using the principle of the holographic redundancy. The reduction of reconstruction quality caused by the loss of sampling in the small-sized detector and sparse sensor array in the digital holography can be compensated.

Abstract:Digital holographic microscopy (DHM) suffers from a limited refocus depth range due to the employed microscope objective. The relationship between the refocus depth range of the DHM system and its optical parameters is studied theoretically and experimentally, and a method is proposed that combines wavefront coding with bicubic interpolation and extrapolation iteration to extend the refocus depth range. For obtaining a uniform point spread function on the refocus plane, a propagator kernel in numerical reconstruction is multiplied by a numerical logarithmic phase mask, and a deviation of the refocus distance is made. To improve the resolution of the refocused image, the size of the hologram is doubly enlarged. This approach can extend the refocus depth range from 0.9 up to 1.5 mm. This work provides important guidance for high-resolution imaging with a large refocus depth range in DHM.

Abstract:A method for improving the resolution of single-frame off-axis holograms based on extrapolation iteration and Kronecker interpolation is proposed to address the problem of low resolution of image sensors in digital holographic systems. Low-frequency information in the image is increased and the zero-order image is suppressed by the numerical computation in the frequency domain using the Kronecker interpolation method. High-frequency information outside the received plane is calculated using an extrapolation iterative algorithm. The obtained low-frequency and high-frequency information are then combined to improve the resolution of off-axis holography. Compared to conventional reconstruction methods, the proposed method eliminates the need to add complex optical elements to the optical path, greatly simplifying the optical system when increasing resolution. Simulation and optical experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:We present a method of single-frame reconstruction in off-axis digital holography with Kronecker-product interpolation to maximize spatial-frequency extraction. The Kronecker-product interpolation operated on a one-frame off-axis digital hologram can generate several aliasing spectra in its Fourier domain, where the zero-order aliasing spectra in the extrapolation region can be suppressed effectively. After adding all aliasing spectrum regions and substituting each aliasing spectrum in place with their sum, spectrum interception with a larger scope for filtering can be made in one of the aliasing spectrum regions. The experimental results demonstrate that the method is valid to improve the resolution in off-axis digital holography.

Abstract:In this paper, an off-axis digital holography multi-frame image super-resolution reconstruction method is presented. Each low-resolution hologram will have small displacement in different directions. The obtained low-resolution holograms are processed iteratively with the super-resolution algorithm to obtain the super-resolution hologram, and then the amplitude image is reconstructed from the super-resolution hologram. The imaging results show that the resolution of the reconstructed image after super-resolution processing is obviously improved, because of increase of high-frequency information in the high-resolution hologram.

Abstract:For improving the quality of the reconstructed image calculated from the hologram,a 3-D object digital hologram was successfully recorded by using single exposure method and 3-D object holographic optical setup based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer.The quality of the reconstructed image directly calculated from the recorded hologram was unsatisfactory because of the presence of the zero-order diffraction and the speckle noise.A set of digital image processing algorithms was then proposed to process the digital hologram and the reconstructed image with multi-filtering technique.The method synthetizing the wavelet filtering and the contracted weighted mean filtering is capable to eliminate the zero-order diffraction component and reduce the speckle noise to obtain realistic reconstructed image.The experimental result shows that this simple method is very effective for improving the quality of the reconstructed image.For recording hologram only once,it is convenient for application in the real time image processing fields.
Accurate Reconstruction in Digital Holographic Microscopy Using Fresnel Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet Transform

Abstract:Digital holography is a promising measurement method in the fields of bio-medicine and micro-electronics. But the captured images of digital holography are severely polluted by the speckle noise because of optical scattering and diffraction. Via analyzing the properties of Fresnel diffraction and the topographies of micro-structures, a novel reconstruction method based on the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) is proposed. This algorithm is shift-invariant and capable of obtaining sparse representations for the diffracted signals of salient features, thus it is well suited for multiresolution processing of the interferometric holograms of directional morphologies. An explicit representation of orthogonal Fresnel DT-CWT bases and a specific filtering method are developed. This method can effectively remove the speckle noise without destroying the salient features. Finally, the proposed reconstruction method is compared with the conventional Fresnel diffraction integration and Fresnel wavelet transform with compressive sensing methods to validate its remarkable superiority on the aspects of topography reconstruction and speckle removal.
Iterative Digital In-Line Holographic Reconstruction with Improved Resolution by Data Interpolation

Abstract:Digital in-line holography (DIH) is a lensless imaging technique that can be used to build low-cost and compact imaging systems. In DIH, the in-line hologram is recorded by a CMOS or CCD sensor and later used to reconstruct the image of the sample. The imaging resolution is determined by the system numerical aperture provided that the pixel size is smaller than the required Nyquist criteria for sampling distance. In the case of short sample-to-sensor distance, pixel size is often a limiting factor for the resolution. To solve this problem, we propose to use iterative method along with data interpolation for the holographic reconstruction. Proof-of-concept numerical simulations have been done to show the effectiveness of our method. In our algorithm, the optical field is propagated back and forth between the sample plane and the sensor plane while using the measured intensity and a priori information about the sample as constraints, following Gerchberg-Saxton and Fienup's methods. The iteration will converge and we can get both intensity and phase information of the sample. Before the iteration, the intensity data matrix measured by the sensor is interpolated to enlarge the matrix dimension and thus effectively reduce the pixel size. During the iteration, we apply the sensor plane constraints on only the measured intensity location but not the interpolated data location. In our simulation, we observed that during the iteration, the interpolated data will be changed reasonably and we can finally reconstruct the sample image with better resolution.
High-resolution Reconstruction in Off-Axis Digital Holographic Imaging by Using Aliasing-Spectrum Filtering

Abstract:We present a spectrum filtering approach for reconstruction of off-axis digital holograms. The high frequency aliasing terms in Fourier spectrum domain of hologram are generated by non-fitting interpolation. After interpolation processing, the zero-order terms in the aliasing spectrum region are obviously suppressed. Accordingly, for the spectrum filtering of high-frequency signal terms, the available range of frequency band will increase significantly, which can result in the improvement of resolution of the reconstructed images. In order to avoid the effect of non-uniform distribution on the aliasing spectrum terms, all the same-order signal terms in the aliasing spectrum (positive or negative first-order spectrum) are intercepted, respectively, and then added together to reconstruct the complex amplitude distribution of the sample. We perform the reconstruction imaging with a conventional method and the presented method from the same hologram in simulation. The imaging results show that such interpolation method can obviously improve the resolution of the reconstructed amplitude and phase images. This method for off-axis digital holographic reconstruction only relies on a single frame acquisition to achieve high resolution reconstruction imaging without additional requirements to the optical setup, which will have a promising application in real-time imaging for living biological cells or moving objects.

Abstract:Based on analyzing resolution of digital holographic system and sampling space in reconstructed image plane,a simple,convenient and effective method is presented,which can increase the display resolution of the reconstructed field in Fresnel-transform reconstruction of digital holograms.By padding zeros operation to a digital hologram recorded by charge-coupled device(CCD),sampling space in the reconstructed image plane is decreased and pixel numbers in the reconstructed image are increased,and then the reconstructed image with high quality is obtained.With similar method,the vision aberration of reconstructed images resulted from the difference of CCD size in horizontal and vertical direction is rectified.Experimental results show a good agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The technology of multi-beam digital hologram is proposed to the problem that due to the influence of the illumination,CCD only can receive a little weak scattered wave from the lateral surface of the object,so that it can not reconstruct the multi-surface of the object clearly and brightly at the same time.The proposed method points out that it can use multi-beam to illuminate several surfaces of three-dimensional object.It enhances the intensity of the scattered wave received by CCD from the lateral surface of the object.Multi-surface of three-dimensional object is reconstructed successfully in this experiment.Then,in order to reduce speckle noise of the reconstruction image,is bilinear interpolation and median filter is adopted to process the image,and high quality reconstruction image of three-dimensional object is acquired.

Abstract:The imaging quality of in-line digital holography is challenged by the twin-image and aliasing effects because sensors only respond to intensity and pixels are of finite size. As a result, phase retrieval and pixel super-resolution techniques serve as the two essential ingredients for high-fidelity holographic imaging. In this work, we combine the two as a unified optimization problem, and propose a generalized algorithmic framework for pixel-super-resolved phase retrieval. In particular, we introduce the iterative projection algorithms and gradient descent algorithms for solving this problem. The basic building blocks, namely the projection operator and the Wirtinger gradient, are derived and analyzed. The algorithms are verified with both simulated and experimental data. The proposed framework generalizes well to various physical settings, and is compatible with many state-of-the-art optimization algorithms.

Abstract:The imaging quality of in-line digital holography is challenged by the twin-image and aliasing effects because sensors only respond to intensity and pixels are of finite size. As a result, phase retrieval and pixel superresolution techniques serve as the two essential ingredients for high-fidelity holographic imaging. In this work, we combine the two within a unified algorithmic framework. Pixel super-resolution phase retrieval is recast as an optimization problem and is solved via gradient descent-based algorithms. Regularization techniques and Nesterov’s momentum are introduced to further speed up data acquisition and iterative reconstruction. The proposed algorithms are verified through a proof-of-concept lensless on-chip microscope. We demonstrate experimentally the capability of pixel super-resolution phase retrieval techniques in revealing the subpixel and quantitative phase information of complex biological samples.
