Abstract:The Yellow River is an important water source for north China, which is the fifth largest river all over the world. Here the upstream, midstream and downstream of the Yellow River were selected as case study for well understanding the sustainability of water quality and quantity. The results showed the runoff of Yellow River has decreased since the 1950s due to human activities. Moreover, the water quality of the Yellow River is deteriorating with the rapid development of industry and urbanization. Especially heavy metals pollution, the concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, lead and total nitrogen increased gradually from upstream to downstream, while the concentrations of chromium, mercury, zinc and total phosphorous were highest in the midstream. The concentrations of nitrogen (e.g. ammonium and nitrate), volatile phenol and total amount of Escherichia coli displayed decreasing trends from upstream to downstream. In addition, the concentrations of heavy metals showed the highest value in the corresponding farmland of midstream except for Pb, which displayed the significant positive correlation with yellow river water, moreover As and Cr also showed the carcinogenic risk in irrigated farmland. Further analysis found the agriculture, industry and urban residential areas accounted for influence of 40%, 26%, and 16% on water amount reduce, respectively. Industrial wastewater, domestic wastewater, phosphorus and nitrigen accounted for 66%, 21%, 8% and 5% of the influence on water quality, respectively. The results suggested that the sustainability of the water resource of the Yellow River is at risk in terms of quality and quantity. There is an urgent need to readjust the water allocation plan (namely 87 plan), establishing a water rights trading system, implement the precision irrigation on agricultural practices and adjust the industrial structure of the Yellow River Basin.

Abstract:Taking Dongying City, Shandong Province as an example, this paper discusses the current situation, challenges and countermeasures of the Yellow River culture communication. As an important part of the Yellow River basin, Dongying city has actively built the Yellow River cultural protection and inheritance system, promoted the Yellow River culture by editing and publishing cultural books, building historical and cultural exhibition rooms, and at the same time strengthened cultural exchanges and cooperation in an online and offline all-round mode. However, in the aspect of spreading Yellow River culture, Dongying city is faced with challenges such as stylized content, single communication channel and lack of communication effect evaluation, which limit the wide spread of Yellow River culture. Through the questionnaire survey of college students, this paper found that the Yellow River culture has an important influence in cultivating patriotism and promoting cultural inheritance, and has a certain social value and significance.

Abstract:We describe an approach to assessing biological health in a heavily utilized, large lowland river setting, using the example of the lower Yellow River, China. In this study, the river was divided into four reaches, and a field survey of fish, benthic macroinvertebrates, and riparian plants was undertaken. Data from historical records were used for reference. The scoring system used weighting to adjust for differences in the importance of the chosen indicators and the relative efficiency of the sampling effort. The results indicated that the biological health of the lower Yellow River is distant from historical reference conditions, with its condition generally declining in the downstream direction. This result is consistent with the river’s history of impairment of hydrology, water quality, wetland area and character, and physical form. We conclude that the reference river state based on historical conditions is unlikely to equate to the best attainable river health because certain changes have occurred in the river that may prohibit a return to the previous state of ecological health. On the basis of the results of this assessment as well as a review of the literature, we propose field data collection methodologies and indicators that can be applied in future assessments.

Abstract:We analyze 4000-year flood history of the lower Yellow River and the history of agricultural development in the middle river by investigating historical writings and quantitative time series data of environmental changes in the river basin. Flood dynamics are characterized by positive feedback loops, critical thresholds of natural processes, and abrupt transitions caused by socio-economic factors. Technological and organizational innovations were dominant driving forces of the flood history. The popularization of iron plows and embankment of the lower river in the 4th century bc initiated a positive feedback loop on levee breaches. The strength of the feedback loop was enhanced by farming of coarse-sediment producing areas, steep hillslope cultivation, and a new river management paradigm, and finally pushed the flood frequency to its climax in the seventeenth century. The co-evolution of river dynamics and Chinese society is remarkable, especially farming and soil erosion in the middle river, and central authority and river management in the lower river.

Abstract:Abstract: The governance and development history of the Yellow River is an important part of Chinese history. Many historical documents and archives have been produced around the governance and development of the Yellow River as well as modern information resources such as databases and pictures, which together constitute a special collection of cultural heritage resources of the Yellow River Governance Landscape. In this paper, a literature search was conducted and unique resources collected for the construction of the Yellow River Governance Landscape, including the main literature, archives, pictures, databases, and other resources. Experts identified the concept and relevant resources of the Yellow River Governance Landscape, and librarians constructed the special collection. The future direction of digitization and database construction for the Yellow River Governance Landscape resources are also discussed. The special resources of the Yellow River Governance Landscape will help to increase the discipline collections and special collections of university libraries, provide resources for multidisciplinary teaching and research, and help to digitize and build databases of Yellow River Governance Landscape resources in the future as well as provide the content basis for open access and sharing of digital resources.

Abstract:Significance The Yellow River (YR) is the cradle of Chinese civilization. It supports agriculture, social prosperity, and human survival. YR runoff and sediment load have sharply fallen since the late 1980s. We reconstructed natural runoff history for the middle reach of the YR from 1492 to 2013 CE. We found that the recent low observed YR runoff is unprecedented over the past five centuries, mainly due to the combination of decreasing precipitation and increasing water consumption by human activities, particularly agricultural irrigation. Our results provide a valuable historical dataset for YR water management, as well as an important model for how to distinguish and quantify anthropogenic influence from natural variability in global change studies.

Through clear audiovisual expressions, popular dissemination formats, and narratively profound educational entertainment, the aim is not only to narrate the stories of the Yellow River, but also to deepen the cultural essence of Henan Province.

Abstract:In building the ecological civilization of the Yellow River basin, it is of extraordinary importance to preserve and develop the historical and cultural resources of the Yellow River basin to ensure the economic and cultural prosperity of its surroundings. Based on the need to better protect and develop the historical and cultural resources of the Yellow River Basin, we have developed a research system for the conservation and development of the natural and cultural resources of the Yellow River Basin. It covers both the conservation of the natural resources and the development of the cultural heritage of the Yellow River Basin. The assessment results show that in the Yellow River travel assessment score, the score in 2018 was 67.12, and in 2021 the score rises to 76.23, an increase of 13.57%. In the exploitation of the natural and historical resources of the Yellow River Basin, the scores of related travel, books, and transportation have improved significantly. Yellow River-related history books scored only 63.21 in 2018 for books and increased by 16.04% to 73.35 in 2021. In the transportation sector in the Yellow River Basin, the score was 65.37 in 2018, rising to 75 in 2021.

Abstract:AbstractHuman civilization prospers along rivers worldwide. Here, we investigated human–river relations by revealing the linkage between water and habitability for human settlements, and socioeconomic and cultural development across China. We found that human–water co‐occurrence relationships are self‐similar over sub‐basins for different scales of stream‐order in the river networks. According to the earlier complete demographic census conducted during the reign of the Qing Dynasty (1776), there has been a general tendency for inhabitants to live close to rivers, characterized by population density associated with habitability cored by water under a near‐natural state, which still remains to date (2019) even after long‐term population growth and human interventions. Throughout history, we have extended the linkage of human settlements to humanistic attributes with river networks, derived four different modes of human aggregation towards rivers, and elucidated the geographical diversity of river density, population density, cultural prosperity, and clusters of ethnicity, particularly the Western and the Northeast culture established in the arid (desert) areas, the Huaxia culture in the alluvial plains, the Loess/Nomadic/Southwestern Ethnic culture in the plateaus, and the Qi‐Lu/Wu‐Yue/Linnan culture in coastlands across the whole country. This work is also of significance to understanding long‐term human–water relationships at a global scale.

Abstract:The Yellow River basin is formed by three geological processes including the rising of the Qinghai - Tibet Plateau, loess eolian deposit in Central Asia and the epeirogenic earth movement of the North China Plain. The Yellow River, which is characterized by silt, dyke breaching and river realignment, has been called the great trouble of China. Many great representatives on Yellow River management from Ancient. China to the establishment of the P. R. China proposed various management strategies like blockage, dredging, river wall, dividing and gathering, which, though effective sometimes, did not solve the trouble completely. However, no great dyke breaching and river realignment has happened since the establishment of the P. R. China, and the current course of the Yellow River has been keeping stable for 154 years since 1855. Under the prerequisite that the fundamental realities of China have not been ultimately improved, the current course of the River must be kept stable for another 100 similar to 120 years. Therefore, the following measures like sand reduction, water increasing, water saving and pollution reduction should be implemented aiming at improving the situation of water resource shortage, river bed aggradations and water pollution. The research on four important scientific issues including dualist water cycle of river basin and its evolution mechanism, flow and sediment coupling simulation under the effect of frequent human activities, rational water resource distribution and water - sand joint operation, and the comprehensive river basin management under the effect of climate changes shall be strengthened on the basis of modern science and technology. 100 years later, when the total population of China is greatly reduced due to the implementation of the one child policy, a great many people can be migrated from the Yellow River flooding area, and a new channel can be vacated for realignment of the River to follow its rule.

Abstract:For decades, the river health of the Yellow River source region (YRSR) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau has been a focal issue owing to its unique geographic location and ecological functions. This study investigated the ecological status of the headwater streams, the main stem, and the tributaries of the Yellow River in the YRSR using the tolerance values of macroinvertebrates and those related to biotic indices. The macroinvertebrate assemblages of the headwater streams were characterized by lower biodiversity than the tributaries downstream, based on comparisons of taxonomical composition, functional feeding group composition, and the pollution-tolerant capacity of taxa. The headwater streams had a lower ratio (16%) of pollution-sensitive macroinvertebrate taxa than that of the tributaries downstream (30%). The biotic indices (family- and genus-level biotic indices) indicated that the ecological health of the headwater streams was comparably poorer than that of the downstream tributaries. The combined effect of vulnerable natural conditions and increasing human disturbance is likely the main cause of eco-environmental degradation in the Yellow River headwater streams.

Abstract:Abstract The Yellow River Basin (YRB) is an important economic zone in China. The issue of water ecology has attached widely attention by scholars and society. This paper systematically reviewed the status, hotspots and development tendency on water resources research in the YRB based on the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database from 1992 to 2019. The SATI4.0 was used to analyze the annual publication, journal sources and keywords. High-frequency keywords were extracted, and software including NetDraw, SPSS and CiteSpace were used to analyze the co-occurring keywords, clustering and research frontier. Results showed that: (1) The number of published papers had increased before 2005 and decreased after it. The quantity of paper has increased sharply since 2018, indicating that the research has a new direction. (2) The source of journals mainly concentrated on basic subjects and hydraulic engineering. (3) The cluster analysis shows that hydrologic features, water management and protection and the water rights system are hotspots. (4) The result of research frontier indicates that sensitivity, ecological protection and high-quality development of water resources have ample research perspectives. It is general trend to combine the scientific methods with traditional methods. The results are conducive to systematically understand research advances and trends of water resources under changing environment, thereby promoting the construction of ecological civilization in the YRB.

Abstract:The Yellow River basin is a key food production centre of global importance facing rapidly growing water scarcity. Water availability for agriculture in the basin is threatened by rapid growth in the demand for industrial and urban water, the need to flush sediment from the river's lower reaches, environmental demands and growing water pollution. Climate change is already evident in the basin with long-term declines in river runoff, higher temperatures, and increasing frequency and intensity of drought. The Chinese government has exhausted most options for improving water supply. The challenge will be to switch to improved water demand management, which is hampered by existing governance structures, and lack of integrated agriculture and water resource policies.

Abstract:The Huanghe River, due to its huge sediment load, frequent floods, and shifts in course, has had a major impact on the coastal regions of China. The high concentration of suspended sediment and sediment load are responsible for many strange or unique phenomena such as “hanging river” and perilous traps on the coastal plain, and hyperpycnal plumes, shear fronts, fluid mud, muddy ponds, and hard plate-like sands in the subaqueous environment. Decreases in river discharge over the past 25years have led to frequent dry periods when the river does not reach the sea and yet the risk of flood disasters still exists. Because of oil and other developments in the delta over the past four decades, the Chinese government has managed and stabilized the river channels. Additional management initiatives should be made to further fully utilize the river discharge of water and sediment, continue stabilization of the river mouth, and accommodate continued development.

Abstract:The Yellow River Delta (YRD) is an important agricultural and industrial region in China, yet its water resources have been increasingly affected by shortages and pollution due to human activities and the impact of climate change. This has resulted in severe damage to the water ecosystem in the YRD, thereby necessitating the adoption of effective legal measures to safeguard these resources. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent research findings on water resources and water ecology in the YRD. Specifically, it summarizes the changes and characteristics of the geographical distribution, quantity and quality of water resources in the region and analyzes the effects of climate change, economic development and population growth on water resources. In light of the vulnerability and risks to the water resources and ecosystems in this area, this paper evaluates the impact of human activities on regional water security and proposes strategies for the sustainable utilization of water resources and the protection of public health. The insights and measures presented in this paper provide valuable guidance and references for water resource management and environmental protection in the YRD.

Abstract:The Yellow River is the second longest river in China,which provides the north and northwest China with water resources.In historyt,he Yellow River was the most challenging river and had brought many calamities to the Chinese peo-ple.Although the river has been controlled by humans with numerous dams and hundreds kilometers of grand leveest,here are still many problems to be solved:soil erosion,unstable channel,pollution and poor river ecology.Integrated river man-agement strategies were proposed to improve the river health in the paper.The main viewpoints are:①Controlling the gully bed incision and headward erosion is essential for erosion control in the Loess Plateau;②Enhancing the resistance and re-ducing flow velocity may finally stabilize the river channel;③Construction of river-linked lakes and wetlands can improve the ecology;④Controlling point-source pollution is the key to improve the water quality.
