Abstract:In Definition 3.44 we defined the notions of a strongly smooth map and weakly submersive map from a K-space to a manifold without boundary or corners. In this chapter we give the corresponding definitions for the case when the target manifold P has a boundary or corners.

Abstract:We studied the closure of a complex subtorus given from an affine subspace in $\mathfrak{t}^{n} \cong \mathbb{R}^{n}$ in a toric manifold. If the closure of the complex subtorus is a smooth complex submanifold in the toric manifold, then we call such submanifold a torus-equivariantly embedded toric manifold with respect to the subtorus action determined by the data of the affine subspace. In this paper, we construct certain submanifolds with corners in a Delzant polytope of the toric manifold from the affine subspaces and show that the conditions for such submanifolds with corners are equivalent to those for torus-equivariantly embedded toric manifolds.

Abstract:We define family versions of the invariant of 4-manifolds with contact boundary due to Kronheimer and Mrowka and use these to detect exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with boundary. Further, we show the existence of the first example of exotic 3-spheres in a smooth closed 4-manifold with diffeomorphic complements.

Abstract:Consider the topologically enriched category of compact smooth manifolds (possibly with corners), with morphisms given by codimension zero smooth embeddings. Now formally identify any object X with its thickening X x [-1,1]. We prove that the resulting infinity-category of thickened smooth manifolds is equivalent to the infinity-category of finite spaces over BO. (This is one formalization of the philosophy that embedding questions become homotopy-theoretic upon passage to higher dimensions.) The central tool is a geometric construction of pushouts in this infinity-category, carried out with an eye toward proving analogous results in exact symplectic geometry. Notably, the proof never invokes smooth approximation nor any h-principle.

Simplifying generic smooth maps to the 2-sphere and to the plane

Abstract:We study how to construct explicit deformations of generic smooth maps from closed $n$--dimensional manifolds $M$ with $n \geq 4$ to the $2$--sphere $S^2$ and show that every smooth map $M \to S^2$ is homotopic to a $C^\infty$ stable map with at most one cusp point and with only folds of the middle absolute index. Furthermore, if $n$ is even, such a $C^\infty$ stable map can be so constructed that the restriction to the singular point set is a topological embedding. As a corollary, we show that for $n \geq 4$ even, there always exists a $C^\infty$ stable map $M \to \mathbb{R}^2$ with at most one cusp point such that the restriction to the singular point set is a topological embedding. As another corollary, we give a new proof to the existence of an open book structure on odd dimensional manifolds which extends a given one on the boundary, originally due to Quinn. Finally, using the open book structure thus constructed, we show that $k$--connected $n$--dimensional manifolds always admit a fold map into $\mathbb{R}^2$ without folds of absolute indices $i$ with $1 \leq i \leq k$, for $n \geq 7$ odd and $1 \leq k < (n-3)/2$.

Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional submanifold in the simply connected space form F n+p (c) with c + H 2 > 0, where H is the mean curvature of M. We verify that if M n (n ≥ 3) is an oriented compact submanifold with parallel mean curvature and its Ricci curvature satisfies Ric M ≥ (n − 2)(c + H 2), then M is either a totally umbilic sphere, a Clifford hypersurface in an (n + 1)-sphere with n = even, or ${\mathbb{C}P^{2} \left(\frac{4}{3}(c + H^{2})\right) {\rm in} S^{7} \left(\frac{1}{\sqrt{c + H^{2}}}\right)}$. In particular, if Ric M > (n − 2)(c + H 2), then M is a totally umbilic sphere. We then prove that if M n (n ≥ 4) is a compact submanifold in F n+p (c) with c ≥ 0, and if Ric M > (n − 2)(c + H 2), then M is homeomorphic to a sphere. It should be emphasized that our pinching conditions above are sharp. Finally, we obtain a differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds with positive Ricci curvature.

Abstract:We study a class of homotopies between maps from 4‐manifolds to surfaces which we call cusp merges. These homotopies naturally appear in the uniqueness problems for certain pictorial descriptions of 4‐manifolds derived from maps to the 2‐sphere (for example, broken Lefschetz fibrations, wrinkled fibrations, or Morse 2‐functions). Our main results provide a classification of cusp merge homotopies in terms of suitably framed curves in the source manifold, as well as a fairly explicit description of a parallel transport diffeomorphism associated to a cusp merge homotopy. The latter is the key ingredient in understanding how the aforementioned pictorial descriptions change under homotopies involving cusp merges. We apply our methods to the uniqueness problem of surface diagrams of 4‐manifolds and describe algorithms to obtain surface diagrams for total spaces of (achiral) Lefschetz fibrations and 4‐manifolds of the form M×S1, where M is a 3‐manifold. Along the way we provide extensive background material about maps to surfaces and homotopies thereof and develop a theory of parallel transport that generalizes the use of gradient flows in Morse theory.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of pseudo-trisections of smooth oriented compact 4-manifolds with boundary. The main feature of pseudo-trisections is that they have lower complexity than relative trisections for given 4-manifolds. We prove existence and uniqueness of pseudo-trisections, and further establish a one-to-one correspondence between pseudo-trisections and their diagrammatic representations. We next introduce the concept of pseudo-bridge trisections of neatly embedded surfaces in smooth oriented compact 4-manifolds. We develop a diagrammatic theory of pseudo-bridge trisections and provide examples of computations of invariants of neatly embedded surfaces in 4-manifolds using said diagrams.

Abstract:We study the structure induced on a smooth manifold by a continuous selection of smooth functions. In case such selection is suitably generic, it provides a stratification of the manifold, whose strata are algebraically defined smooth submanifolds. When the continuous selection has nondegenerate critical points, stratification descends to the local topological structure. We analyze this structure for the maximum of three smooth functions on a 4-manifold, which provides a new perspective on the theory of trisections.

Abstract:We use a recent result of C. Lange to obtain a converse to a theorem of B. Bowditch in dimension at most $4$. In particular, we show that, for $n \leq 4$, a polyhedral $n$-manifold $X$ with bounded geometry is $K$-bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic to a Riemannian manifold $M$. We bound the constant $K$, the curvature, and the injectivity radius of $M$ by the bounds on the geometry of $X$.

Abstract:Given a manifold with boundary, one can consider the space of subsurfaces of this manifold meeting the boundary in a prescribed fashion. It is known that these spaces of subsurfaces satisfy homological stability if the manifold has at least dimension five and is simply-connected. We introduce a notion of tangential structure for subsurfaces and give a general criterion for when the space of subsurfaces with tangential structure satisfies homological stability provided that the manifold is simply-connected and has dimension $n\geq 5$. Examples of tangential structures such that the spaces of subsurface with that tangential structure satisfy homological stability are framings or spin structures of their tangent bundle, or $k$-frames of the normal bundle provided that $k\leq n-2$. Furthermore we introduce spaces of pointedly embedded subsurfaces and construct stabilization maps, as well as prove homological stability for these. This is used to prove homological stability for spaces of symplectic subsurfaces.

Abstract:In this paper we use stable capillary surfaces (analogous to the $\mu$-bubble construction) to study manifolds with strictly mean convex boundary and nonnegative scalar curvature. We give an obstruction to filling 2-manifolds by such 3-manifolds based on the Urysohn width. We also obtain a bandwidth estimate and establish other geometric properties of such manifolds.

Abstract:We characterize hyperbolic metrics on compact triangulated surfaces with boundary using a variational principle. As a consequence, a new parameterization of the Teichmüller space of a compact surface with boundary is produced. In the new parameterization, the Teichmüller space becomes an explicit open convex polytope. Our results can be considered as a generalization of the simplicial coordinate of Penner [P1], [P2] for hyperbolic metrics with cusp ends to the case of surfaces with geodesic boundary. It is conjectured that the Weil-Petersson symplectic form can be expressed explicitly in terms of the new coordinate.

Abstract:We provide an approach to study exotic phenomena in relatively small 4-manifolds that captures many different exotic behaviors under one umbrella. These phenomena include exotic smooth structures on 4-manifolds with $b_2=1$, examples of strong corks, and exotic codimension-$1$ embeddings into $\mathbb{C} P^2 \# - \mathbb{C} P^2$ that survive external stabilization. We also give a new way to detect a homeomorphism of a 4-manifold that is not topologically isotopic to any diffeomorphism and give lower bounds of relative genera of certain knots. Our primary tools are constraints on diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds obtained from families Seiberg-Witten theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the rigidity and vanishing properties of compact submanifolds with free boundary of arbitrary codimension in the unit ball. We first show that a minimal submanifold with free boundary in the unit ball satisfying a pointwise or integral curvature pinching condition on the second fundamental form is a flat equatorial disk. Then we prove a vanishing theorem for cohomology groups for submanifolds with free boundary in the unit ball under an integral curvature pinching condition on the trace‐free second fundamental form.

Abstract:We study the simultaneous filling and embedding problem for a CR family of compact strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds of dimension at least 5. We also derive, as a consequence, the normality of the Stein fibers of the filled-in Stein space under the constant dimensionality assumption of the first Kohn-Rossi cohomology group of the fiber CR manifolds. Two main ingredients for our approach are the work of Catlin on the solution of the ∂-equation with mixed boundary conditions and the work of Siu and Ling on the study of the Grauert direct image theory for a (1,1)-convex-concave family of complex spaces.
