Abstract:Hydrogen energy, a green renewable energy, has shown great potential in developing new energy and alleviating environmental problems. Water electrolysis is an effective method to achieve large-scale clean hydrogen production, but this process needs to consume a huge amount of electric energy. It is urgent to develop high-activity, high-stability and low-cost catalysts to reduce the consumption of electric energy. At present, the noble metal catalyst is the star material in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but its stability and high cost restrict its large-scale application. In this review, we comprehensively discussed the research progress on noble metal-based heterogeneous electrocatalysts used in water electrolysis for hydrogen production. Firstly, we analyzed the influence factors for hydrogen production performance, including the mass transfer process, the adsorption–desorption process, the catalytic process, and the influence of the working electrode and electrolyte. Then, we discussed the relationship between catalytic activity and electronic structure and chemical composition in view of theoretical calculations and summarized the strategies for developing efficient catalysts (alloying and interface engineering). Finally, we highlighted the challenges for the practical application of noble metal-based hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a valuable chemical for a wide variety of applications. The environmentally friendly production route of the electrochemical reduction of O2 to H2O2 has become an attractive alternative to the traditional anthraquinone process. The efficiency of electrosynthesis process depends considerably on the availability of cost-effective catalysts with high selectivity, activity, and stability. Currently, there are many outstanding issues in the preparation of highly selective catalysts, the exploration of the interface electrolysis environment, and the construction of electrolysis devices, which have led to extensive research efforts. Distinct from the existing few comprehensive review articles on H2O2 production by two-electron oxygen reduction, the present review first explains the principle of the oxygen reduction reaction and then highlights recent advances in the regulation and control strategies of different types of catalysts. Key factors of electrode structure and device design are discussed. In addition, we highlight the promising co-production combination of this system with renewable energy or energy storage systems. This review can help introduce the potential of oxygen reduction electrochemical production of high-flux H2O2 to the commercial market.

Abstract:Noble metal materials are widely employed as benchmark electrocatalysts to achieve electrochemical water splitting which comprises of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the high cost and scarcity limit the wide ranging commercial applications of noble metal-based catalysts. Development of noble metal-free two dimensional (2D) carbon-based materials can not only reduce the consumption of noble metals, but also create materials with the characteristics of high active surface area, abundance, easy functionalization, and chemical stability, which may carve a way to promising electrochemical water splitting. In this review, noble metal-free 2D carbon-based electrocatalysts, including heteroatom (B, S, N, P, F, and O) doped graphene, 2D porous carbons modified with heteroatoms and/or transition metals, and 2D carbon-based hybrids are introduced as cost-effective alternatives to the noble metal-based electrocatalysts with comparable efficiencies to conduct HER, OER, and overall water splitting. This review emphasizes on current development in synthetic strategies and structure–property relationships of noble metal-free 2D carbon-based electrocatalysts, together with major challenges and perspectives of noble metal-free 2D carbon-based electrocatalysts for further electrochemical applications.

Abstract:The practical application of splitting water to generate hydrogen is to a large extent hindered by an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process. Electrocatalysts with low-cost, high activity, and durability are essential for the low kinetic threshold of the OER. Despite the high active performances of noble metal compound electrocatalysts like IrO 2 and RuO 2 , they are heavily restricted by the high cost and scarcity of noble metal elements. In this context, noble-metal-free electrocatalysts have acquired increasing significance in recent years. So far, a broad spectrum of noble-metal-free electrocatalysts has been developed for improved OER performance. In this review, three types of electrolysis and some evaluation criteria are introduced, followed by recent progress in designing and synthesizing noble-metal-free alkaline OER electrocatalysts, with the classification of metal oxides/(oxy)hydroxides, carbon-based materials, and metal/carbon hybrids. Finally, perspectives are also provided on the future development of the alkaline OER on active sites and stability of electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The recent structure engineering of nonprecious metal oxides electrocatalysts including Ti‐, Co‐, Zn‐, Sn‐, and Bi‐based oxides for two‐electron water oxidation reaction to generate H2O2 has been reviewed and further opportunities are discussed. These engineering strategies include doping, defect, facet, and interface tailoring. Density functional theory calculations and operando characterizations are also included. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a valuable chemical oxidant which has been extensively applied in water treatment, textile/paper bleaching, medical disinfection, and other industrial fields. Electrocatalytic two‐electron water oxidation reaction (2e‐WOR) with renewable energy inputs is an attractive route to produce H2O2, which avoids the energy‐intensive anthraquinone process in industry. However, leveraging these advances requires the development of efficient and selective electrocatalysts to accelerate the sluggish kinetics. In particular, nanostructured engineering of nonprecious metal oxides offers a promising route for 2e‐WOR. In this review, the recent progress on nanostructure engineering of various nonprecious metal oxides electrocatalysts for 2e‐WOR is reviewed, along with remarks on the challenges and perspectives. The fundamental understanding of 2e‐WOR by density functional theory calculations and operando characterizations is first given, followed by a discussion of diverse H2O2 quantification methods including ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry, titration, and colorimetric strips, with special emphasis on their accuracy, detection limit and stability. Afterward, various strategies toward high‐performance nonprecious metal oxides electrocatalysts including doping, defect, facet, and interface engineering are overviewed. Future challenges and opportunities for 2e‐WOR to H2O2 are proposed finally.

Abstract:Water electrolysis is a sustainable approach for hydrogen production by using electricity from clean energy sources. However, both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) associated with water electrolysis are kinetically sluggish, leading to low efficiency in corresponding electrolysis devices. In addition, current electrocatalysts that can catalyze both HER and OER to practical rates require noble metals such as platinum that are low in abundance and high in price, severely limiting commercialization. As a result, the development of high-performance and cost-effective non-noble metal electrocatalysts to replace noble ones has intensified. Based on this, this review will comprehensively present recent research in the design, synthesis, characterization and performance validation/optimization of non-noble metal HER electrocatalysts and analyze corresponding catalytic mechanisms. Moreover, several important types of non-noble metal electrocatalysts including zero-dimensional, one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional materials are presented with an emphasis on morphology/structure, synergetic interaction between metal and support, catalytic property and HER activity/stability. Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is an environmentally friendly oxidant used in the chemical industry, sewage treatment, and waste gas purification. There are many ways to produce H 2 O 2 today. In recent years, electrocatalytic technology has received extensive attention from researchers because of its clean and efficient advantages. In the electrocatalytic reaction, the catalyst is the decisive factor affecting the reaction efficiency. Among all kinds of catalysts, carbon materials and their modified material catalysts have attracted broad attention because of their good electrocatalytic performance and low cost. Therefore, this review has discussed the carbon catalysts and summarized their development in recent years. Finally, in line with the trend of environmental protection, this review has briefly discussed and analyzed the application of H 2 O 2 in environmental protection.

Improving the efficiency of electrocatalysts and uncovering their catalytic mechanisms are essential steps in achieving high 2e-ORR activity, selectivity, and stability. This comprehensive review summarizes recent advancements in electrocatalysts for in-situ H2O2 production, providing a detailed overview of the field. In particular, the review delves into the design, fabrication, and investigation of catalytic active sites contributing to H2O2 selectivity. Abstract:The pros and cons of the strategies to construct carbon‐based noble metal hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts including loading noble metals on carbon substrates and carbonizing noble metal/carbon precursor mixtures are analyzed. Subsequently, the methods to optimize the hydrogen adsorption energy and proton transport via structure engineering are summarized. Finally, the challenges for practical water electrolysis are discussed. The electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) that converts renewable electricity into storable hydrogen, a sustainable and clean energy carrier, provides a promising method to mitigate the energy crisis and environmental pollution. In general, noble‐metal‐based nanomaterials (including Pt, Rh, Ru, Ir, etc.) have drawn tremendous research attention in the context of the HER because of their nearly optimal bindings to hydrogen, robust stability and tunable physical/chemical properties. Particularly, carbon as a substrate not only offers a stabilizing and conductive matrix, but also impacts the electronic structure of the supported metal by interfacial interaction, necessitating a detailed understanding. To speed up the sluggish kinetics of the HER, the design and construction of efficient electrocatalysts is of crucial importance. Herein, a comprehensive review of the recent advances in carbon‐supported noble‐metal electrocatalysts is presented, focusing on their synthetic strategies, structural analyses, and applications in HER electrocatalysis. Specifically, the correlation between the electronic structure and activity is discussed. Furthermore, a perspective is offered highlighting the challenges and opportunities for development of highly efficient HER electrocatalysts, with the aim for widespread utilization of practical water electrolyzers toward green hydrogen production.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy serves as an ideal alternative energy carrier to fossil fuels in the future clean energy system. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) occurring at the cathode of water electrocatalysis has been considered as a promising approach to produce hydrogen over the past decades due to zero carbon emission. To gain a deep insight into the advanced electrocatalyst, herein, we provide a comprehensive review with an emphasis on the recent state-of-the-art advances of HER electrocatalysts in view of controlling their local electronic structure, creating defect nanostructures, exposing active sites, altering d band center, and constructing heterogeneous structure. Initially, we start with a brief introduction of the fundamental electrocatalytic mechanisms and the critical electrochemical parameters for evaluating HER. Then, we systemically discuss three representative classes of electrocatalysts, comprised of highly active noble-metal including single atom, nanoparticles, and clusters, earth-abundant transition metal such as transition metal sulfides, phosphides, carbides, nitrides, and oxides, and metal-free functional nanomaterials involving different dimensions of carbonaceous nanomaterials, boron nitrogen, and phosphorous non-carbonaceous nanomaterials by adjusting their tunable electronic structures and architectures/morphologies with a particular emphasis on the structure–function relationships. Finally, we point out the current challenges and opportunities in view of achieving highly active and stable electrocatalysts towards practical applications.

Abstract:Abstract The study of hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts for water electrolysis is a developing field in which noble metal-based materials are commonly used. However, the associated high cost and low abundance of noble metals limit their practical application. Non-noble metal catalysts, aside from being inexpensive, highly abundant and environmental friendly, can possess high electrical conductivity, good structural tunability and comparable electrocatalytic performances to state-of-the-art noble metals, particularly in alkaline media, making them desirable candidates to reduce or replace noble metals as promising electrocatalysts for water electrolysis. This article will review and provide an overview of the fundamental knowledge related to water electrolysis with a focus on the development and progress of non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts in alkaline, polymer exchange membrane and solid oxide electrolysis. A critical analysis of the various catalysts currently available is also provided with discussions on current challenges and future perspectives. In addition, to facilitate future research and development, several possible research directions to overcome these challenges are provided in this article. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The article summarizes the recent progress in the application of noble metal‐based alloy electrocatalysts in the field of hydrogen production by water electrolysis in recent years. The related mechanisms and issues, synthesis methods, and concrete case analysis of electrocatalysts design are discussed. In addition, the prospects, opportunities, and challenges facing noble metal‐based alloy electrocatalysts are discussed. Hydrogen energy is regarded as the ultimate energy source for future human society, and the preparation of hydrogen from water electrolysis is recognized as the most ideal way. One of the key factors to achieve large‐scale hydrogen production by water splitting is the availability of highly active and stable electrocatalysts. Although non‐precious metal electrocatalysts have made great strides in recent years, the best hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts are still based on noble metals. Therefore, it is particularly important to improve the overall activity of the electrocatalysts while reducing the noble metals load. Alloying strategies can shoulder the burden of optimizing electrocatalysts cost and improving electrocatalysts performance. With this in mind, recent work on the application of noble metal‐based alloy electrocatalysts in the field of hydrogen production from water electrolysis is summarized. In this review, first, the mechanism of HER is described; then, the current development of synthesis methods for alloy electrocatalysts is presented; finally, an example analysis of practical application studies on alloy electrocatalysts in hydrogen production is presented. Abstract:This review summarizes the recent advancements in 2e− ORR for H2O2 production. H2O2 is an eco‐friendly oxidant and energy carrier, but its conventional industrial production relies on a costly large‐scale anthraquinone oxidation process. Electrocatalytic synthesis has emerged as a renewable and cost‐effective alternative. Significant developments in electrocatalysts for 2e− ORR‐mediated H2O2 production have been achieved with the progress in ORR catalysts. The review provides an overview of the mechanism and various efficient catalysts, categorized into noble metal‐based, non‐noble metal‐based, and non‐metal‐based catalysts, with their catalytic activity and selectivity discussed. Lastly, the review explores the prospects of electrocatalytic 2e− ORR for H2O2 synthesis and outlines potential research directions, aiming to guide efficient electrocatalyst design and inspire innovation in electrocatalytic H2O2 synthesis. Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a widely used strong oxidant, and its traditional preparation methods, anthraquinone method, and direct synthesis method, have many drawbacks. The method of producing H2O2 by two‐electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e‐ ORR) is considered an alternative strategy for the traditional anthraquinone method due to its high efficiency, energy saving, and environmental friendliness, but it remains a big challenge. In this review, we have described the mechanism of ORR and the principle of electrocatalytic performance testing, and have summarized the standard performance evaluation techniques for electrocatalysts to produce H2O2. Secondly, according to the theoretical calculation and experimental results, several kinds of efficient electrocatalysts are introduced. It is concluded that noble metal‐based materials, carbon‐based materials, non‐noble metal composites, and single‐atom catalysts are the preferred catalyst materials for the preparation of H2O2 by 2e‐ ORR. Finally, the advantages and novelty of 2e‐ ORR compared with traditional methods for H2O2 production, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the above‐mentioned high‐efficiency catalysts, are summarized. The application prospect and development direction of high‐efficiency catalysts for H2O2 production by 2e‐ ORR has been prospected, which is of great significance for promoting the electrochemical yield of H2O2 and developing green chemical production.

Abstract:<p>Electrochemical water splitting plays a crucial role in the development of clean and renewable energy production and conversion, which is a promising pathway to reduce social dependence on fossil fuels. Thus, highly active, cost‐efficient, and robust catalysts must be developed to reduce the reaction overpotential and increase electrocatalytic efficiency. In this review, recent research efforts toward developing advanced electrocatalysts based on noble metals with outstanding performance for water splitting catalysis, which is mainly dependent on their structure engineering, are summarized. First, a simple description of the water‐splitting mechanism and some promising structure engineering strategies are given, including heteroatom incorporation, strain engineering, interface/hybrid engineering, and single atomic construction. Then, the underlying relationship between noble metal electronic/geometric structure and performance for water splitting is discussed with the assistance of theoretical simulation. Finally, a personal perspective is provided in order to highlight the challenges and opportunities for developing novel electrocatalysts suitable for a wide range of commercial uses in water splitting for structural engineering applications.</p>

Surface and interface engineering of noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for efficient overall water splitting

Abstract:Developing highly efficient overall water splitting (OWS) electrocatalysts based on noble-metal-free materials to produce fuel is stimulated by increasing concerns regarding global energy security and environment contamination. Tremendous accomplishments in the design and fabrication of non-noble metal counterpart to substitute the noble metal catalysts for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and OWS are boosting the development of clean hydrogen fuel production. Recent researches and advances reveal that the surface and interface atomic engineering can readily induce novel physiochemical properties, such as more surface active sites, electronic effect, and strong synergistic effect, offering new and efficient avenues toward largely promoted electrocatalytic performance. In this review, we focus on the recent progress in designing and constructing high-performance non-noble metal catalysts for efficient OER, HER, and OWS through surface and interface engineering. A few of surface and interface effects have been highlighted to account for the influence of electrocatalytic properties observed in catalysts. And a series of the surface and interface engineering strategies have been utilized in non-noble metal counterparts design, including traditional chemical method (e.g. wet-chemical, hydrothermal/annealing), deposition (chemical/electrochemical deposition), and in-situ electrochemical oxidation strategy. The rational design of noble-metal-free counterparts with excellent electrocatalytic performance based on surface and interface engineering could realize improved electrocatalysis, offering a deep understanding of structure–activity relationships.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a key green energy oxidant with growing interest. This review examines non‐noble metal catalysts for two‐electron oxygen reduction (2e− ORR), aiming to optimize H2O2 production through active site regulation, heterometallic effects, oxygen vacancy engineering, and local electronic environment. It suggests a future research direction for more advanced catalyst design. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a high‐value chemical widely used in electronics, textiles, paper bleaching, medical disinfection, and wastewater treatment. Traditional production methods, such as the anthraquinone oxidation process and direct synthesis, require high energy consumption, and involve risks from toxic substances and explosions. Researchers are now exploring photochemical, electrochemical, and photoelectrochemical synthesis methods to reduce energy use and pollution. This review focuses on the 2‐electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e− ORR) for the electrochemical synthesis of H2O2, and discusses how catalyst active sites influence O2 adsorption. Strategies to enhance H2O2 selectivity by regulating these sites are presented. Catalysts require strong O2 adsorption to initiate reactions and weak *OOH adsorption to promote H2O2 formation. The review also covers advances in single‐atom catalysts (SACs), multi‐metal‐based catalysts, and highlights non‐noble metal oxides, especially perovskite oxides, for their versatile structures and potential in 2e− ORR. The potential of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effects to enhance catalyst performance is also discussed. In conclusion, emphasis is placed on optimizing catalyst structures through theoretical and experimental methods to achieve efficient and selective H2O2 production, aiming for sustainable and commercial applications.

Abstract:As one promising technology for highly pure hydrogen production under mild conditions, electrochemical water splitting has been garnering substantial interest, while its efficiency and rate are primarily restricted by the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Up to now, the most efficient electrocatalysts for OER are still Ru or Ir-based nanomaterials, but features of high price, scarcity and instability limit their massive utilization in water splitting. Therefore, developing effective, inexpensive and stable electrocatalysts is critical for large-scale water splitting. In this review, the detailed OER reaction mechanisms were first discussed and then the principles for designing advanced single atom-decorated transition metal oxides-based OER electrocatalysts with excellent activities and stabilities were proposed accordingly. After that, recent advances about designing and preparing single atom-decorated transition metal oxide-based OER electrocatalysts were summarized in terms of synthetic methods and intrinsic natures to enhance OER. Meanwhile, the roles of atomically dispersed sites in transition metal oxides for OER performance improvement were presented. Finally, we also highlighted the key challenges and future opportunities of single atom-decorated transition metal oxide-based OER electrocatalysts to provide new insights into boosting low-cost transition metal oxides electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:With the energy crisis and environmental pollution becoming more and more serious, it is urgent to develop renewable and clean energy. Hydrogen production from electrolyzed water is of great significance to solve the energy crisis and environmental problems in the future. Recently, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) materials have been widely studied in the electrocatalysis field, due to their unique layered structure, tunable metal species and highly dispersed active sites. Moreover, the LDHs supporting noble metal catalysts obtained through the topotactic transformation of LDHs precursors significantly reduce the energy barrier of electrolyzing water, showing remarkable catalytic activity, good conductivity and excellent durability. In this review, we give an overview of recent advances on LDHs supporting noble metal catalysts, from a brief introduction, to their preparation and modification methods, to an overview of their application in the electrocatalysis field, as well as the challenges and outlooks in this promising field on the basis of current development.
