Critical Factors for Knowledge Sharing in Communities of Practice

Abstract:Organizational knowledge sharing behavior usually occurs in communities of practice (CoPs), which can be influenced by many factors. Though prior researches have explored the antecedents of knowledge sharing in CoPs from different perspective, the critical factors are still ambiguous. Therefore, the paper discusses the influence factors of knowledge sharing in CoPs from individual, community, organization levels based on the literature review, and conducts an empirical study for calculating the influence factors weight to evaluate the impact of various factors on CoPs’ knowledge sharing. It is examined that trust, motivation, community type, and organizational environment have crucial influences on the degree of knowledge sharing in CoPs, and some suggestions in view of trust, motivation, community type, and organizational environment are brought up in the end to encourage CoPs’ knowledge sharing.
