Abstract:Adopting layered models with porous layers sandwiched between the top and bottom layers that can be either porous or solid, we numerically investigate the seismo-electromagnetic coupling by considering the electrokinetic effect that is only operative in porous media. First, the numerical solutions for a low-porosity solid-porous two-layer model are compared with analytical solutions for a corresponding homogeneous full-space model. The consistency of seismic waves is a validation to our program. To understand the seemingly coseismic electromagnetic (EM) signals recorded in the solid area above the interface, further numerical simulations on an ordinary solid-porous, two-layer model are conducted. On the basis of time slice snapshots and theoretical analysis, we determine that the seemingly coseismic EM signals actually are the seismoelectric evanescent EM waves induced by the seismic waves arriving at the interface with an incident angle greater than the critical angle. They decay rapidly when moving away from the interface. Numerical simulations for a two-layer porous model show that seismoelectric evanescent EM waves can also be generated at a porous-porous interface. Further numerical simulations on a four-layer half-space model show that the time-synchronization coseismic EM signals can also be contributed by the seismoelectric evanescent EM waves.
