Abstract:Leadership and human resource management (HRM) have attracted growing interest among researchers worldwide. However, existing studies tend to examine the two interrelated variables separately, which may result in potential biases when estimating their effects and miss important implications of their interaction. Drawing on the relevant literature, we articulate the relationship between leadership and HRM and offer conceptual and empirical insights into the opportunities for integrating the two streams of research. We also highlight the importance of contexts when studying leadership and HRM and present an overview of the twelve papers in this special issue that focus on leadership and HRM issues in China. Finally, we propose an agenda for future research to further integrate leadership and HRM.

Abstract:<p>The continuing emergence of Asia as a critically important continent for the foreseeable future has renewed interest in understanding theory and practice in this region. This special issue was designed to shed light on human resource management (HRM) issues in this region, and to help guide future research in and on this region. In this introductory article, we first analyze the growth of HRM scholarship in Asia, by examining the research published over the last twenty-five years. We then describe the genesis of this special issue, and summarize the key themes emerging from the review articles in the issue. These include: psychological contract; work-life interface; corporate social responsibility; multinational corporations and their subsidiaries; the challenges of global talent management; convergence-divergence; state socialism to post-state socialism; and incorporating the context. We further offer suggestions for future research by proposing critical topics and emerging themes, including: employee voice; diversity and inclusion; employee well-being and resilience; preparing and responding to crises; and green human resource management. We conclude by offering theoretical perspectives and highlighting key recent developments which are likely to impact future practice, and should be addressed by scholars.</p>

Abstract:Although researchers and practitioners have come up with many good ideas for improving the employment relationship, there is no evidence for universally applicable practices.Prior theoretical work and research in the area of (intemational) human resource management indicate that cultural and contextual constraints are responsible for the problematic nature of transference of practices.This study illustrates and explains the contextual as well as cultural boundaries through a direct comparison of practices as used in a matched sample of industrial companies in China (n -97) and The Netherlands (n -47), It is argued that differences in organizational structure, cultural values and labour regulations account for the variation between countries.The results show considerable differences between China and The Netherlands in the HRM practices of industrial enterprises.Also, the organizational culture of the companies studied varies between ihe two countries and the differences found are clearly in line with differences on the national cultural level.
Modelling Regional Hrm Strategies in China: an Entrepreneurship Perspective

Abstract:With the rapid development of organizational change and globalization in China, most Chinese firms are preparing themselves for doing business across regions and going global through effective strategic entrepreneurship and human resource management (HRM). This study examines the relationship between two general HRM practices, strategic entrepreneurship and organizational performance, in order to build up a cross-regional HRM strategy model. Participants in the study constituted 103 firms from 11 different cities and provinces. In each company, three types of surveys were distributed: an HRM practice survey (career development and performance management), a strategic entrepreneurship survey and an organizational performance survey among two human resource (HR) managers, two-three executives and two-three members of top management teams, respectively. Altogether 606 managers and executives participated from across regions in China. The results showed that performance management was positively related to organizational performance and such relationship was stronger when adaptive capability, one dimension of strategic entrepreneurship, was higher. The performance management-organizational performance relationship was also found to vary across regions. Moreover, two other dimensions of strategic entrepreneurship, proactive change and risk anticipation, were found to have effects on organizational performance. The implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract:Purpose-Strategic human resource management (SHRM) is seen as crucial for innovation and entrepreneurship in China. An empirical research was carried out to investigate main dimensions of the model of human resources management (HRM), practices and their effects on organisational performance in relation to innovation and entrepreneurship.Design/methodology/approach-The research has two parts. The first part is a field survey on human resource management practices and its main dimensions. Abstract:The field of human resource management is ever emerging and evolving. Since its inception, it has faced abundant hues and cries. The purpose of this study is to give a holistic and integrative view of HRM concepts and usages. So, this study is based on a meta-analysis of the literature of current major practices used in different ways. The study examines the social exchange theory, the resource-based view of the organization, human capital theory, descriptive study, normative study and strategic theories of human resource management. The comparison of these studies assists HR practitioners to develop the contingencies and to fit the HR policies according to the context and requirements of the organization. An implied but unproven hypothesis symbolizes that good contextual HRM fit may lead to the vigorous development of the organization.
The Roles of Integrative Leadership in Enhancing Organizational Effectiveness in the Chinese Public Sector: A Research Note

Abstract:This research paper uses the social capital perspective to revisit the much-discussed and as yet intriguing research question: the role of leadership behaviors in generating positive organizational attitudes and behaviors within the Asian context. The main purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to verify whether three leadership styles (i.e., servant leadership, ethical leadership, and participative leadership) contribute to enhancing organizational trust and commitment, (2) to test the full and partial mediating roles of organizational trust and commitment in the relationship between the three leadership predictors and organizational outcomes (i.e., in-role performance and managerial accountability), and (3) to probe indirect leadership impacts on performance and accountability outcomes. Using the alumni database (for 10 years, from 2001 to 2010) of the department of public administration at Zhejiang University, we constructed a survey (2011) (all items are selfreported: first round: 362 participants; second round: 300 participants; third round: 252 participants; valid sample size: 239 participants) that measured public employees` perceptions and behaviors in public organizations such as regarding leadership, commitment, HR policies, perceived organizational state, OCB, job tension, and trust. We employed exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to operationalize the variables and confirm the latent constructs from the relevant survey questions. Second, to confirm the total direct and indirect effects, we employed a full structural equation model (SEM) (i.e., a measurement model with a path model) to test the interrelationships among variables and to assess the relative strength of each variable. The results of this study are interesting as they show that ethical and participative leadership behaviors are positively and significantly associated with organizational trust and commitment in the Chinese public sector. Based on a discussion of the main findings, various research and practical implications for public management theory and practice are provided.
Implementing Sustainable Human Resources Practices: Leadership Style Matters

Abstract:Findings of a positive relationship between high-performance work systems (HPWSs) and organizational performance indicate that an investment in a set of well-configured HR practices can promote strategic organizational goals. However, recent strategic human resource management (SHRM) research indicates that the positive link between HPWSs and performance might not hold universally across organizations because of poor implementation of the adopted HR systems. Drawing on leadership literature, we address this implementation problem by focusing on the moderating effect of frontline managers’ three leadership styles on the association between HPWSs and employees’ perceived support for innovation. Data collected in mainland China (429 employees on 66 work teams in 14 firms) showed that some leadership styles had significant moderating effects on that association and, subsequently, on team effectiveness. The findings contribute to the SHRM literature by demonstrating the importance of frontline managers’ leadership styles in the effective implementation of HPWSs to promote organizational innovation and team effectiveness.

Abstract:Extant research on strategic human resource management (SHRM) has primarily focused on the content of SHRM (best practices, bundles of practices, etc.) and its effect on firm performance. Little research has examined the SHRM process so as to better understand how SHRM is adopted and implemented and what impact it has on organizational processes and outcomes. This article examines the role of corporate culture in the SHRM adoption and implementation process. Empirical results from a sample of 223 Chinese enterprises indicate that corporate culture has an impact on the adoption of SHRM, and that different types of culture affect the SHRM process differently. Specifically, group and developmental cultures have positive effects on the adoption of SHRM, but the effect of hierarchical culture is not significant. Developmental culture is also found to have a direct effect on firm performance. This study offers significant implications for HRM in China and other dynamic and emerging economies. Abstract:This paper first describes the characteristics of organizational behavior and leadership research, and delineates the status quo of Chinese and international research. We can see that Chinese scholars have made fast progress in this field in the past decade and have tremendous potentials. Second, after comparing Chinese and oversea researchers in studied topics and methods, we point out the shortcomings of the current Chinese research. The third section of the paper presents the innovations of the organizational behavior and leadership research in theory, method and paradigm. Scholars are encouraged to focus on the phenomena relevant to Chinese economic and social development, to identify the research questions that are relevant to this field, and to conduct research in rigorous and creative ways. To achieve this goal, Chinese scholars need to learn from the existing theories and methods, and choose appropriate perspectives to examine the identified questions. In order to inspire Chinese scholars to investigate the important phenomena in the Chinese context, and therefore to contribute to the international academy, the third section also introduces several recent studies with high impacts. The paper concludes with the future research directions in the field of organizational behavior and leadership.

Abstract:Strategic human resource management (SHRM) has been an important strand of research in the HRM field for over three decades, and has attracted heated debates in recent years. One main critique of the state of SHRM research is its increasing detachment from HRM practice, in the pursuit of more theoretical rigor and methodological sophistication. Our review article has two main tasks. First, we review SHRM research published in two leading HRM journals-Human Resource ManagementandHuman Resource Management Journal-in the light of the criticisms on SHRM research and use this as a backdrop of our second task. Second, we critically examine SHRM research conducted in the Chinese context by drawing on a systematic review on extant literature. In doing so, we draw on a wider range of HRM journals such asHuman Resource Management Review,The International Journal of Human Resource Management, and so forth. We find that while the trend of psychologization in SHRM research is gathering pace, the range of theoretical perspectives mobilized to inform the studies is actually expanding. We call for SHRM research to be more contextualized and more practical phenomenon-driven SHRM research. We indicate several avenues for future research, using China as an example.

Abstract:In this study, we examine research in the field of human resource management (HRM) published in six leading Chinese management journals from 2001 to 2007.First, we show publication patterns of Chinese HRM research by topic and reference discipline. Second, we assess the status of research quality using four raters to independently rate the articles based on type, orientation, design and statistical analyses. Through a systematic approach of analyzing this selection of articles, our study offers an opportunity for international scholars to appreciate the unique contributions of the Chinese language literature to the general HRM research. We conclude with a discussion of opportunities and directions for future research in this area to produce high quality indigenous research and build global knowledge community as well.

Abstract:Researchers have spent considerable efforts to identify means of using human resource management practices to effectively utilize human capital. At the same time, it has been well recognized that leadership plays a critical role in effective management of employees [Burns, J. Z., & Otte, F. L., Hum. Resour. Dev. Q. 10 (1999) 225; Sims Jr., H. P., & Manz, C. C. (1996). Company of heroes: Unleashing the power of self-leadership. New York: Wiley]. However, scant research exists that integrates these two seemingly disparate streams of research. By drawing on strategic human resource management and leadership literatures, we provide a typology of employment mode—leadership style fit that matches leadership styles with the requirements of different employee groups. Building on strategic human resource management, we recognize that different groups of employees are managed differently and may require different leadership styles. Based on contingency approaches to leadership, we explore leadership style most consistent with the underlying objectives and psychological obligations underlying different groups of employees. Implications of this fit for researchers and managers as well as directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:<p>The purpose of this article is to provide an overview on the state of research in the field in human resource management (HRM) issues in multinational corporations (MNCs) in and from China. We integrate previous studies from multiple disciplines to articulate the contextual importance of research on this topic, and suggest overarching themes to expand the field of research. HRM research in the intercultural, interinstitutional context of MNCs in and from China has the potential to provide contextualized insights for longstanding debates in the field such as HRM standardization versus localization and convergence versus divergence and contextual factors behind these patterns. To this end, we call for future research to center on the changing cultural, institutional, technological, and globalization context in understanding HRM and industrial relations issues in these MNCs. Practically, knowledge in this area can help global managers and top management teams in multinational organizations navigate various context complexity, foster more productive coordination and cooperation across borders, and gain legitimacy and MNCs in and from China additional competitive edge in the global marketplace.</p>

The Influence of the Fit Between Strategic Human Resource Management and CEO Strategic Leadership Behaviours on Organizational Effectiveness in China

Abstract:Strategic human resource management and strategic leadership are both important factors affecting organizational effectiveness. However, few studies have organically integrated their influences on organizational outcomes. Drawing on social information process theory, this study proposed a variety of relationships between high performance work system (HPWS) and CEO relationship-focused leadership behaviours on organizational outcomes including firm performance, organizational-level affective commitment and employee overall turnover rate (e.g. strengthening effect, weakening effect, and substitution effect). Based on a matched data from vice presidents, human resource managers and employees in 182 Chinese firms, this study found the above three relationships between HPWS and CEO relationship-focused leadership behaviours on organizational outcomes. Specifically, when HPWS and CEO relationship-focused leadership behaviours were both high, firm performance and organizational-level affective commitment were higher, and employee overall turnover rate was lower; the effects of HPWS on organizational outcomes would not be significant when CEO relationship-focused leadership behaviours was low; when HPWS was low but CEO relationship-focused leadership behaviours was high, employee overall turnover rate was highest. This study contributed to the understanding of the relationship between 'system' and 'renqing' in the context of Chinese enterprises, integrated the research on strategic leadership and strategic human resource management, and had important inferences for management practice.

Abstract:This introductory essay provides an overview, as well as a reassessment, of current theory, practice and ongoing research in human resource management ‘with Chinese characteristics’. As the People's Republic of China (PRC) has become inexorably linked to the international economy and increasingly faces the challenges of globalization, its enterprises and people-management have had to adapt to this new, fast-changing environment. The contributions summarized and commented upon here attempt to explain how this has been achieved. They are all based on empirical on-site investigations by specialists in the field and deal with such HRM-related topics as: cross-national comparisons, devolution of HR practices, HRM regional modelling, human capital, globalization, organizational commitment, psychological capital, psychological contracts, supervisors and co-workers, work behaviour, work-family conflicts and the like. The contributors are drawn from a variety of backgrounds and university affiliations in Australia, Canada, Finland, Hong Kong, Japan, PRC, UK and the US.

Abstract:With Australasian countries/regions included within the umbrella of Asia for the purpose of this study, we examine all papers having authorship from Asia published in a set of journals generally recognized as the most relevant leading journals in the field of OM and map the leadership role of Asian authors, institutions, and countries/regions. We examine leadership within the dominant areas of OM research in Asia and chart the patterns of growth in research from Asia over the years 2001–2015. The results show that the Asian countries/regions of China, Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore, and South Korea account for a major portion of the papers having authorship from Asia. We find a number of authors and institutions from these leading Asian countries/regions ranking high on various network centrality measures and serving as hubs of connectivity and productivity in research. Asian OM research is found to be focused most on the areas of supply chain management, quality management, and manufacturing. Our examination reveals a trend of rapid increase in the number of papers with Asian authorship appearing in these journals and countries/regions of the Asia Pacific gaining prominence in the global OM research domain. We identify and discuss country and regional focus in OM research from Asia, emerging trends, and future research opportunities.
