Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical structures have been widely employed to enhance the microwave absorption performance due to their large surface area, satisfied impedance matching and polymorphic morphology. However, to achieve multiphase and multifunctional performance only within a primary unit remains a tremendous challenge. Herein, special carbon-based C/MoO2/Co(3)O(4)nanosheets were assembled into a flower-like hierarchical architecture by a facile coordination-polymerization method. Abundant Co(3)O(4)magnetic nanoparticles were anchored onto carbon nanoflake substrates, leading to both enhanced polarization and enhanced magnetic coupling. Meanwhile, a large number of heterogeneous junction interfaces among MoO(2)nanoparticles and carbon substrates enhanced the interface polarization. Therefore, the C/MoO2/Co(3)O(4)microflower achieved a minimum reflection loss of -59.7 dB at 17.7 GHz with a thickness of only 1.2 mm, indicative of its great potential as a lightweight microwave absorption material.
Core@shell CoNi2S4/Co9S8@SiO2@MoS2 Flower-Like Multicomponent Nanocomposites: an Effective Strategy to Aggrandize Interfacial Polarization for Microwave Absorption

Abstract:Interfacial polarization had a great impact on the attenuation of electromagnetic wave. To aggrandize interfacial polarization, a strategy of constructing the abundant interfaces was proposed and investigated. Herein, CoNi nanospheres, CoNi@SiO2 nanospheres and core@shell CoNi2S4/Co9S8@SiO2@MoS2 flower-like multicomponent nanocomposites (MCNCs) were elaborately designed and successfully fabricated through a simple continuous hydrothermal process, classical Stöber method and hydrothermal treatment. The obtained results demonstrated that the elaborately constructed abundant interfaces greatly boosted the polarization loss ability, which resulted in the enhanced interfacial polarization. Therefore, the as-prepared CoNi2S4/Co9S8@SiO2@MoS2 flower-like MCNCs presented the superior electromagnetic wave absorption properties (EMWAPs) compared to the CoNi and CoNi@SiO2 precursors. Furthermore, the EMWAPs of CoNi2S4/Co9S8@SiO2@MoS2 flower-like MCNCs could also be further improved by optimizing the hydrothermal temperature and filler loading. The obtained CoNi2S4/Co9S8@SiO2@MoS2 flower-like MCNCs presented the excellent comprehensive EMWAPs including strong absorption capability, broad absorption bandwidth and thin matching thickness, which could be attributed to the unique structure, excellent interfacial polarization and synergistic effect. Therefore, this finding not only demonstrated that introducing the abundant interfaces was an effective strategy to strengthen interfacial polarization for the promotion of EMWAPs, but also provided an alternative approach to exploit the novel high-efficiency microwave absorbers.
MoO 3 -MoC/Co@NC coupled heterostructures with strong connections and abundant interfaces for electromagnetic wave absorption

Abstract:Improving the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption capability at the thin thickness of heterostructures is critical but remains a great challenge. Here, we propose a MoO 3 @ZIF-67 core-shell heterostructure derived molybdenum trioxide- molybdenum carbide/ carbon (MoO 3 -MoC/) coupled heterostructure with a one-dimensional (1D) short rod-like structure for EMW absorption. A strong connection is constructed between nanoparticles (NPs) and MoO 3 -MoC specie due to the pyrolysis strategy and in situ reaction between MoO 3 nanobelts and ZIF-67 rhombic dodecahedrons. The abundant heterointerfaces between N-doped carbon (NC) and metallic Co, NPs and MoC species, NPs and MoO 3 nanobelts, as well as MoC and MoO 3 nanobelts improve the interfacial polarization. Abundant defects, such as N heteroatoms and oxygen vacancies, are also established in the MoO 3 -MoC/ coupled heterostructure. As a result, the MoO 3 -MoC/ coupled heterostructure inherits excellent EMW absorption performance with a reflection loss ( R L ) value of -64.3 dB at a thickness of 3.875 mm, outperforming many advanced EMW absorbers. This work shows the great potential of strong connections and abundant interfaces in heterostructure for improvements of EMW absorbers.

Abstract:Integration of hierarchical polarizations within one nanoarchitecture combines superiorities of strong dielectric polarization loss and matched characteristic impedance for enhancing microwave absorption (MA) performance. However, accurate regulation of polarization relaxations in hierarchical composites remains a considerable challenge. Herein, novel Mo2C@N, P dual-doped carbon microspheres with excellent MA performance have been prepared via a facile yeast-template method. The collaborative composite consists of a hierarchically porous carbon substrate, the embedded ultrafine Mo2C nanoparticles, and the decorated Mo2C/C nanoflowers. Their maximum reflection loss value reaches as much as −50.6 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth is up to 5.4 GHz with a thickness of 2.5 mm, which are superior to those of most carbonaceous absorbents reported previously. These excellent data mainly result from the following three mechanisms. First, multiple heterointerfaces among the air, carbon matrix, and Mo2C nanoparticles contribute to the strong dielectric polarization loss capacity. Second, the doping of heteroatoms doped can trigger intensive dipole polarization. Third, porous structure induces strong space charge polarization and multiple scattering of electromagnetic waves. These achievements provide a biotemplate method for the general preparation of porous metals or metal compounds/carbon composites with broad application prospects in the MA field.

Abstract:Nanocomposites with a three-dimensional (3D) flower-like geometrical morphology were considered as excellent microwave absorbers (MAs) because of the numerous effective sites for the multiple reflections of electromagnetic (EM) wave. Herein, for optimizing the EM matching characteristic and taking full advantage of interface polarization, a strategy of magnetic modulation was proposed to further improve the EM wave absorption performances (EMWAPs) of MoS2-based nanocomposites. We adopted a simple hydrothermal route and a combined method of hydrothermal treatment/hydrogen reduction to synthesize core@shell CoFe2O4@MoS2 and CoFe@MoO2/MoS2 flower-like nanocomposites, respectively. The obtained results indicated that the hydrogen reduction effectively improved their magnetic properties and magnetic loss capabilities, and their 3D flower-like geometrical morphologies were well maintained during the hydrogen reduction process. The obtained core@shell CoFe@MoO2/MoS2 flower-like nanocomposites presented the extraordinary comprehensive EMWAPs including the optimal reflection loss value of -54.83 dB with the matching thicknesses (dm) value of 2.05 mm and effective absorption bandwidth value of 6.40 GHz with the dm value of 2.59 mm, which were evidently superior to the properties of CoFe2O4@MoS2. Therefore, the findings provided an effective pathway to further improve EMWAPs of MoS2-based core@shell nanocomposites and the as-prepared core@shell CoFe@MoO2/MoS2 flower-like nanocomposites could be utilized as the novel high-efficient MAs.

Abstract:The design and fabrication of biomass derived flower-like 3O4/carbon (3O4/C) composites used for high-performance microwave absorbing materials are described. The porous carbon skeleton provides the electronic pathway and the nucleation locus for 3O4 nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the porous 3O4/C composites comprising dielectric and magnetic components could also improve impedance matching and be advantageous to electromagnetic energy conversion. Labeled with good impedance matching and strong attenuation characteristics, 3O4/C composites show excellent microwave response where the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −46.4 dB and the maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 11.0 GHz can be achieved. This work not only explores high-performance microwave absorbing materials but also demonstrates that shrimp shell derived materials can be regarded as unexceptionably sustainable resources.

Abstract:Composite materials with magnetic and dielectric properties are considered as promising candidates for electromagnetic wave absorbing materials. However, adjusting the electrical and magnetic properties of materials at the same time faces a huge challenge. Here, using metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as the precursors, highly dispersed Co and ZnO nanoparticles are uniformly confined in the graphitized nitrogen-doped carbon framework, building a balanced electromagnetic performance in the absorbent. Meanwhile, by adding template agents and changing the metal source, the shape of metal/carbon-based materials derived from mostly controllable MOFs has realized the transformation from six-pointed star, flower-like, cube-like to random stone-like. Thanks to its special morphology and balanced magnetic dielectric multiloss mechanism, the six-pointed star Co@ZnO@NC-a exhibits a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −61.9 dB at 8.7 GHz and the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 5.5 GHz (11.6–17.1 GHz) at 2.3 mm thickness. These results provide a new design strategy for fabricating high performance magnetic dielectric absorbing materials with special morphology.

Abstract:The design and development of microwave-absorbing materials with excellent performance hold significant importance in both civil and military fields. The combination of magnetic loss materials and dielectric loss materials can achieve complementary performance effects and regulate impedance matching. In this paper, spindle-like α-Fe2O3 was synthesized using MIL-88A as a template, which was then composited with Ti3C2Tx phase possessing excellent electrical conductivity to obtain Fe2O3/Ti3C2Tx composites. Ti3C2Tx can provide good conductance loss and dipole polarization relaxation, while the incorporation of Fe2O3 between the layers of Ti3C2Tx not only triggers the interfacial polarization effect but also increases layer spacing, thereby enhancing multiple reflection effects. Furthermore, the magnetic-dielectric synergies further optimize the impedance matching. Through the combined action of multiple mechanisms, the Fe2O3/Ti3C2Tx composites (with a mass ratio of 1:3 for Fe2O3 and Ti3C2Tx) exhibit a minimum reflection loss of −34 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 1.53 GHz at a thickness of 3 mm, as well as an effective absorption bandwidth of 2.805 GHz at a thickness of 1.5 mm. This paper presents a reference strategy for constructing highly efficient microwave absorbers derived from Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MXene based on their outstanding properties.

Abstract:The demand of microwave absorption materials (MAMs) with unique morphologies and electromagnetic (EM) balance has become necessary in recent years. Due to the ease of synthesis and tunable structure, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used for this special MAMs. In this study, a new three-dimensional hybrid MOF is proposed that is co-doped with six equally branched star morphologies. The Co-C composite has the same six-branched morphology as that of the precursor. When the EM wave is incident, this special structure makes it easier for the EM wave to enter the material vertically due to the expansion of the incident surface, which is effective in adjusting the transmission path of the electron and the reflection and distribution of the EM wave. Because of the special morphology and magneto-dielectric synergy, the Co-C composite shows a minimum reflection loss ( R Lmin ) of −48.5 dB at 11.0 GHz at an absorption thickness of 3.0 mm, with a microwave absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.1 GHz. This research provides a practical guidance for preparing the MAMs of special star structure.

Abstract:Magnetic/dielectric composite materials with numerous heterointerfaces are highly promising functional materials, which are widely applied in the fields of electromagnetic wave absorption. Constructing heterogeneous structure is beneficial to further enhance the microwave absorption performance of composite materials. However, the process of constructing multi-heterogeneous interfaces is extremely complex. In this work, hollow porous FeCo/Cu/CNTs composite microspheres are prepared by the simple spray drying method and subsequently two-step annealing treatment, which possess abundant heterogeneous interfaces, unique three-dimensional conductive network and magnetic coupling network. This unique structure is beneficial to improving the ability of dielectric loss and magnetic loss, and then achieving an excellent microwave absorption performance. The prepared FeCo/Cu/CNTs-1 composite microspheres maintain a minimum reflection loss (RL) of −48.1 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 5.76 GHz at a thickness of 1.8 mm. Generally, this work provides a new idea for designing multi-heterogeneous of microwave absorbing materials.
MOF-derived multicore-shell Fe3O4@Fe@C composite: An ultrastrong electromagnetic wave absorber

Abstract:Excessive artificial electromagnetic radiation poses significant health risks and disrupts military equipment. To address this, high-performance microwave absorption materials are urgently required. While ferromagnetic materials have excellent absorption but suffer from high density, limited bandwidth, and perishable properties. Carbon materials, especially metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), offer promise due to low density, chemical stability, and high conductivity. In this study, we synthesized a novel multicore-shell Fe3O4@Fe@C composite via solvothermal and in-situ pyrolysis methods. This composite integrated Zn-MOF-derived porous carbon with core-shell Fe3O4@Fe@C, enabling multiple electromagnetic wave routes, strong interfacial polarization, and magnetic-dielectric synergy. It exhibited exceptional electromagnetic wave absorption, with a −59.1 dB reflection loss at 13.36 GHz and a 5.36 GHz effective absorption bandwidth. Our innovative MOF-core-shell approach holds great promise for highly efficient microwave absorbers to mitigate artificial electromagnetic radiation's adverse effects on health and military equipment.

Abstract:Abstract It is an urgent problem to realize reliable microwave absorption materials (MAMs) with low density. To address this issue, a series of controlled experiments w ere carried out, which indicated that the tubular structure enables excellent microwave absorption properties with a lower powder filling rate. This performance is attributable to the combined dielectric and magnetic loss mechanisms provided by Co/C and the interface polarization facilitated by multiple heterogeneous interfaces. Particularly, Co@C nanotubes, benefiting from the enhanced heterointerface polarization due to their abundant specific surface area and the reduced electron migration barrier induced by their 1D stacked structure, effectively achieved a dual enhancement of dielectric loss and polarization loss at lower powder filling ratios. Furthermore, the magnetic coupling effect of magnetic nanoparticle arrays in tubular structures is demonstrated by micromagnetic simulation, which have been few reported elsewhere. These propertied enable Co@C nanotubes to achieve minimum reflection loss and maximum effective absorption broadband values of 61.0 dB and 5.5 GHz, respectively, with a powder filling ratio of 20 wt% and a thickness of 1.94 mm. This study reveals the significance of designing 1D structures in reducing powder filling ratio and matching thickness, providing valuable insights for developing MAMs with different microstructures.

Abstract:Polarization and conduction loss play fundamentally important roles in the nonmagnetic microwave absorption process. In this paper, a uniform and monodisperse hollow ZnSnO3 cube wrapped by multiwalled carbon nanotubes (ZSO@CNTs) was successfully synthesized via facile hydrothermal treatment. A reasonable mechanism related to Ostwald ripening was proposed to design the varied ZSO@CNTs for the special hollow conductive network. Scanning electron microscopy images clearly indicate that reaction temperature is the key factor for the composite structure, which has a significant effect on its electromagnetic properties. Electron holography proves the inhomogeneous distribution of charge density in the ZSO@CNT system, leading to the occurrence of interface polarization. Complex permittivity properties of ZSO@CNT composites under different reaction temperatures were investigated to optimize the morphology that can distinctly enhance microwave absorption performance. The maximum reflection loss that the ZSO@CNT-130 degrees C composite can reach is -52.1 dB at 13.5 GHz, and the absorption bandwidths range from 11.9 to 15.8 GHz with a thickness as thin as 1.6 mm. Adjusting the simulation thicknesses from 1 to 5 mm, the efficient absorption bandwidth (RL < -10 dB) that the ZSO@CNT composite could reach was 14.16 GHz (88.8% of 2-18 GHz). The excellent microwave absorption performance may be attributed to the synergistic effects of polarization, conduction loss, and special hollow cage structure. It is proposed that the specially controlled structure could provide an effective path for achieving a high-performance microwave absorber.
Structure and composition design on ternary CNT@ZnFe2O4@ZnO composite utilized as enhanced microwave absorbing materials

Abstract:As the increasing requirements on microwave absorber resulting from the complex application environment, composites consisting of multiple components have obvious superiority to the pure materials. In order to achieve excellent absorption performance for composites, both composition and microstructure should be properly designed. In this work, a three-phase composite consisting of conductive CNT, magnetic ZnFe2O4 and dielectric ZnO with coating structure is designed to enhance the microwave absorbing performance. The three-phase CNT@ZnFe2O4@ZnO composites are prepared by a two-step coprecipitation method. The as-prepared composite shows good impedance matching and high attenuation. When the content of ZnFe2O4 is 3 mmol, the composite has a reflection loss of −33.5 dB at 4.4 GHz. The huge interfaces area attributed to both the multi-phase component and multi-layer structure helps to improve the interface polarization, dipole polarization, multiple reflection and scattering. Besides, the synergy of the different loss mechanisms coming from the different materials can also effectively promote the absorption.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have caused widespread concerns in the field of microwave absorption, due to the unique microstructure and electronic state. Herein, the CoZn/[email protected]2@polypyrrole (PPy) composites were prepared through MOF self-template method. The MoS2 sheets and PPy shell incorporated for optimizing impedance matching of two-dimensional (2D) CoZn/C composites. The introduction of MoS2 sheets and PPy shell endowed the composites with enhanced microwave absorption. The as-prepared CoZn/[email protected]2@PPy composites showed a minimum reflection loss (RL) of −49.18 dB with the thickness of 1.5 mm. In addition, the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, RL values exceeding −10 dB) covered 4.56 GHz, which showed greater performances than CoZn/C composites under a lower thickness (<2 mm). This work not only provides a facile route for fabricating MOF-derived carbon-based composites as microwave absorbers, but also broadens the application of MOF materials.

Abstract:Well-organized metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon-based materials exhibit ideal electromagnetic (EM) absorption performance. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge to reduce the complex permittivity and obtain high electromagnetism compatibility. Herein, magnetic rod-like carbon composite NiCo/ZnO/C with a metal–semiconductor interface structure was successfully fabricated through the pyrolysis of Ni/Co/ZiF8 MOF precursors. By comparing the EM wave properties of three materials, NiCo/ZnO/C displayed the optimal performance by virtue of the cooperation of complex permittivity dielectric loss and the magnetic loss of the composite. ZnO optimized the EM performance of NiCo/ZnO/C with a minimum reflection loss ( RL ) value (−50.7 dB) at 9.1 GHz and thickness of 2 mm. It is demonstrated that ZnO particles dispersed uniformly in the outer layer, which became a "green channel" to enhance the maximum intake of electron transport. Furthermore, the synergy between ZnO and NiCo generated an effective impedance match, enabling EM waves to easily enter the interior of the composite. The aim of this paper is to design and construct a platform containing dual-metals and oxide carbon-based composites for an efficient EM wave absorber. It has been proved that coating oxide on metallic carbon-based materials is an effective way to synthesize microwave absorbers with enormous potential.

Abstract:The sufficient interface contact in the composite absorbing material is beneficial to increase the dielectric loss and promote the microwave absorption performance. In this paper, the composite nanoparticles (NPs), Fe3O4 covered with ultra-thin carbon layer (Fe3O4/C), were synthesized by simple high temperature solution-phase and subsequent high-temperature steam carbonization methods. Small size Fe3O4/C composite NPs have large heterogeneous interfaces, which can control the polarization loss of composite NPs through the method of interface regulation and achieve high microwave absorption performance. The strongest reflection loss of the composite NPs with an average particle size of 52 nm can reach -58.5 dB at 14.88 GHz with a thickness of 2 mm, and the corresponding effective absorption (RL ≤ -10 dB) bandwidth (EAB) is 5.63 GHz (12.37-18 GHz). In particular, the high-efficiency absorption (RL ≤ -20 dB) bandwidth of Fe3O4/C can reach 15.44 GHz (2-17.44 GHz) with a thickness of 1.7-10 mm. The current method for controlling polarization loss provide a meaningful reference for future microwave absorption research.

Abstract:Nowadays, facing the inevitable electromagnetic (EM) pollution caused by many electronic products, it is urgent to develop high-performance microwave absorbing materials. In particular, the bimetallic carbon-based composites derived from MOFs exhibit excellent microwave absorption potential due to their simple preparation, low cost, adjustable morphology and magnetoelectric synergy mechanism. In this work, we successfully prepared plum-like NiCo@C composite by simple solvothermal method and carbonization treatment, which displays strong absorption (-55.4 dB) and wide effective absorption band (EAB, 7.2 GHz) when the loading is 20 wt%. The plum-like structure greatly enriches the non-uniform interface and the structural anisotropy contributes to the dissipation of electromagnetic waves. At the same time, the band hybridization and magnetic coupling of NiCo@C contribute to the coordination of EM characteristics. Overall, this work proves the feasibility of NiCo@C hierarchical composite in the field of microwave absorbing, and provides insight for the development of high-performance absorbers.
