Abstract:Stiffness is an important consideration in the design and application of parallel robots, since it is a measure of the ability of its end-effector to resist deformation due to an external wrench, i.e., forces and moments. The stiffness issue pertains to the computation of the stiffness matrix and its characterization. The widely used approach that is applied to the parallel robots to model the stiffness matrix is named “Virtual Joint Method (VJM)”, as it provides acceptable accuracy in short computational time, despite the presence of “Finite Element Analysis (FEA)” and “Matrix Structural Analysis (MSA)” methods. Based upon the calculated stiffness matrix, a (scalar) performance index is sought to measure how stiff a robotic manipulator composed of rigid bodies at a given workspace posture is.
