Abstract:Developing safe, efficient and environment-friendly energy storage systems continues to inspire researchers to synthesize new electrode materials. Doping or substituting host material by some guest elements has been regarded as an effective way to improve the performance of supercapacitors. In this work, single-phase CuCo2-xNixS4 materials were synthesized by a facile two-step hydrothermal method, where Co in CuCo2S4 was substituted by Ni. Cobalt could be easily substituted with Ni in a rational range to keep its constant phase. But, a high content of Ni resulted in a multi-phase composite. Among a series of CuCo2-xNixS4 materials with different Ni/Co mole ratios, CuCo1.25Ni0.75S4 material presented a significantly high specific capacitance (647 F g-1 or 272 C g-1 at 1 A g-1) and the best cycling stability (∼98% specific capacitance retention after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles), which was mainly due to the modified composition, specific single phase, higher electroconductivity, more electroactive sites and the synergistic effect between Ni and Co. Moreover, the assembled asymmetric capacitor using CuCo1.25Ni0.75S4 as a positive electrode and activated carbon as a negative electrode delivered a high energy density of 31.8 Wh kg-1 at the power density of 412.5 W kg-1. These results demonstrated that ternary metal sulfides of CuCo2-xNixS4 are promising electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Nickel cobalt oxide and sulfide electrode materials with various nanostructures were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. The structural, morphological, electrochemical, and electronic properties of the electrode materials were studied to evaluate the effect of S addition into NiCo2O4. The results indicated that S atoms can influence the lattice structure and morphology, and appear to improve the electrochemical performance of the material. Excellent specific capacitance and cycling stability were found in the samples. The NiCo2S4 sample exhibited the highest specific capacitance of 1302 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g and a capacity retention of 92.4% after 5000 charge–discharge cycles. First-principles calculations were performed to provide more insight into the mechanism of improved electrochemical performance when S atoms were added to NiCo2O4 and demonstrate their potential as excellent electrode materials. In the NiCo2O4:xS series materials, the addition of S effectively manipulates the surface morphology and interfacial charge states of the materials to achieve superior electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Doping of Ni atoms causes change in the electronic storage mechanism of Co3−xNixO4 electrode material, resulting in different conductive types. After 10 000 cycles, the material exhibits high stability and reversibility. The effective mass of light, heavy holes, and the conductivity mass of the material can be obtained through theoretical calculations, the energy storage characteristics are further studied. The efficient storage of electrons and the type of conduction in semiconductor materials are important factors in determining their electrochemical performance. However, the interaction between these two factors is often overlooked by researchers. In this study, the effects of Ni doping at Co3−xNixO4 nanoparticles on the electronic storage form of the material and resulting changes in the conduction p/n‐type are reported. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that n‐type conduction with high effective mass of electrons contributes significantly to the redox reaction of electrode materials and is beneficial for improving electrochemical performance. The specific capacitance of Co3−xNixO4 (x = 0.67) electrode material is 10 times larger than that of Co3O4 due to enhanced orbital hybridization caused by Ni atom doping. The findings provide new directions for exploring the mechanism of conductive type conversion of materials and offer insights beyond the traditional approach of considering doping content alone.

Cobalt Doping to Boost the Electrochemical Properties of Ni@Ni3 S2 Nanowire Films for High-Performance Supercapacitors.

Abstract:Metal sulfides have aroused great interest for energy storage. However, their low specific capacities and inferior rate capabilities hinder their practical applications. In this work, a facile cobalt-doping process is used to boost the electrochemical performance of Ni@Ni3 S2 core-sheath nanowire film electrodes for high-performance electrochemical energy storage. Co ions are doped successfully and uniformly into Ni3 S2 nanosheets through a facile ion-exchange process. The electrochemical properties of film electrodes are improved greatly, and an ultrahigh volumetric capacity (increased from 105 to 730 C cm-3 at 0.25 A cm-3 ) and excellent rate capability are obtained after Co is doped into Ni@Ni3 S2 core-sheath nanowires. A hybrid asymmetric supercapacitor with Co-doped Ni@Ni3 S2 as the positive electrode and graphene-carbon nanotubes as the negative electrode is assembled and exhibits an ultrahigh volumetric capacitance of 142 F cm-3 (based on the total volume of both electrodes) at 0.5 A cm-3 and excellent cycling stability (only 3 % capacitance decrease after 5000 cycles). Moreover, the volumetric energy density can reach 44.5 mWh cm-3 , which is much larger than those of thin-film lithium batteries (1-10 mWh cm-3 ). These results may provide useful insights for the fabrication of high-performance film electrodes for energy-storage applications.

Abstract:A series of mixed metal sulfides of NixCu1−xCo2S4 were synthesized by a facile two-step hydrothermal method and they were investigated as electrode materials for supercapacitor. A substitutional solid solution can be easily formed due to the same atom occupation and similar crystal radius of Ni and Cu in the metal sulfides. The electrochemical performances of the mixed metal sulfides are strongly influenced by the chemical compositions, though they have the same crystal structure. Among all the as-prepared materials, Ni0.67Cu0.33Co2S4 shows the best electrochemical performances with the highest specific capacitance of 1340.48Fg−1 at 1 A g−1, outstanding rate capability and excellent cycling stability. The improved performances can be attributed to the high crystallinity, modified microstructure, increased electrochemical sites and improved electroconductivity caused by lattice distortion as well as the synergistic effect in the Cu-substituted NiCo2S4. Furthermore, the assembled two-electrode hybrid device Ni0.67Cu0.33Co2S4//activated carbon can deliver a high energy density of 40Whkg−1 at the power density of 412.5Wkg−1, showing a great potential for energy storage.
Enhanced electrochemical performance of CoNiSx@Ti3C2Tx electrode material through in-situ doping of cobalt element

Abstract:The composite electrode of CoNiS x and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was successfully prepared using a one-step hydrothermal method under the in-situ doping of the cobalt element. The effects of in-situ doping of the cobalt element on the micromorphology and electrochemical performance of the electrodes were investigated. After in-situ doping of the cobalt element, NiS with a needle-like structure was converted into a CoNiS x with petal-like structure. The petal-like CoNiS x with a rough surface was very dense and evenly wrapped on the surface and interlamination of Ti 3 C 2 T x , which helped increase the specific surface area and pore volume of the electrode. Under the identical test conditions, CoNiS x @Ti 3 C 2 T x had a higher specific capacitance and capacitance retention than NiS@Ti 3 C 2 T x . This result indicated that the in-situ doping of the cobalt element promoted the electrochemical performance of the electrode. The energy density of the CoNiS x @Ti 3 C 2 T x /nickel foam (NF)//activated carbon (AC)/NF asymmetric supercapacitor device was 59.20 Wh·kg −1 at a power density of 826.73 W·kg −1 , which was much higher than that of NiS@Ti 3 C 2 T x /NF//AC/NF. Three CoNiS x @Ti 3 C 2 T x /NF//AC/NF in series were able to illuminate the light emitting diode lamp for about 10 min, which was higher than the 5 min of three NiS@Ti 3 C 2 T x /NF//AC/NF in series under the same condition. The CoNiS x @Ti 3 C 2 T x /NF//AC/NF with high energy density had better application potential in energy storage than the NiS@Ti 3 C 2 T x /NF//AC/NF.

Abstract:The micro-nano hierarchical structure of Ni3-xCoxS4 is successfully synthesized by the diffusion control and trapped dopant methods. The Ni3-xCoxS4 hierarchical architectures, which serve as electrodes for supercapacitors, exhibit a high specific capacity of 961.1 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1). The Ni3-xCoxS4 hierarchical architectures also display an excellent rate capacity and a high capacitance retention of 91.07% after 5000 cycles at 10 A g(-1). The long-term cycling performance of Ni3-xCoxS4 electrodes can be attributed to eliminating degeneracy for Ni3S4 structure by Co atoms doping, which effectively improves the electrochemical stability of the electrode material. With the increase of Co contents, the electrochemical performance of Ni3-xCoxS4 hierarchical architectures exhibits a parabolic tendency and reaches its maximum at a doping concentration of 0.83%. The Ni3-xCoxS4 (x = 0.83%)//AC asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits a relatively high energy density of 74.32 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 517.51 W kg(-1), as well as a maximum power density of 14155.71 W kg(-1) at an energy density of 55.05 Wh kg(-1). The excellent electrochemical properties of Ni3-xCoxS4 hierarchical architectures can be attributed to their unique band structures and great conductivities, which allows efficient charge transport and electrolyte diffusion. First-principles calculation is carried out to systematically explain the origin of the specific capacitance of Ni3S4 and Ni3-xCoxS4 hierarchical architectures.

Abstract:Recently, transition metal sulfides have drawn a lot of attention due to their potential application in energy and environmental fields.In this paper, we present a simple and facile method for preparing CuCo S nanoparticles as high performance supercapacitor electrode materials.2 4 -1 -1 Electrochemical measurements exhibit that the CuCo S nanoparticles electrode has a high specific capacitance of (190 C g at 1A g ), 2 4 -1 relatively high rate capability (46 % capacitance retention at 10A g ) and good cycling stability (77 % of the initial specific capacitance can be -1 maintained after 3000 cycles at 4A g ).When fabricated as aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor by using CuCo S nanoparticles and N-doped 2 4 graphene (NG) composites as the positive electrode and the negative electrode, respectively.The assembled device exhibits a high energy -1 -1 -1 density of 32.7 Wh kg at a power density of 794 W kg .And it still operates at a high power density of 6.4 kW kg with an energy density -1 -1 of 19.5 Wh kg .Moreover, after 6000 consecutive GCD cycles at a current density of 4 A g , 78.0 % of the initial capacitance value can be maintained.These attractive results manifest that CuCo S //NG hold a great potential for practical applications in the field of energy storage 2 4system.
Reduced CoNi2S4 Nanosheets with Enhanced Conductivity for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Defect engineering on transition metal dichalcogenides has been regarded as an effective method to improve electrochemical properties in terms of generating active sites and enhancing the intrinsic conductivity. This study reports a new high-performance electrochemical supercapacitor made of reduced CoNi2S4 (r-CoNi2S4) nanosheets, which are synthesized via a facile moderate-reduction process. The sulfur-deficient r-CoNi2S4 nanosheets exhibit significantly enhanced conductivity which is induced by abundant sulfur vacancies formed in the reduction reaction. Compared with the pristine CoNi2S4 nanosheets, the r-CoNi2S4 nanosheets are characterized with a higher specific capacity (1117C g(-1) at current density of 2 A g(-1)) as well as excellent rate capability and stable cycling performance. Firstprinciple analysis confirms that the sulfur vacancies originating from the reduction lead to improve hybridization between the Ni and Co d states and the S p states close to the fermi level, and consequently enhance conductivity with the CoNi2S4 nanostructure. Moreover, an ultrahigh energy density of 55.4Wh kg(-1) at the power density of 8 kW kg(-1) is obtained in an asymmetric supercapacitor configuration, and 80% capacitance of the supercapacitor remains even after 10000 cycles. Abstract:A one-step solvothermal process is developed to synthesize novel CoNi2S4 nanoparticles. Abstract:The bimetallic sulfides of Co 1.5 Ni 1.5 S 4 flower-like nanosheets have been successfully synthesized on Ni foam via one-step electrodeposition method and used as electrode for high-performance supercapacitance. The effect of raw materials proportion on the electrochemical performance of the products was systematically investigated. Results showed that when the ratio of CoCl 2 and NiCl 2 was 1:1, the resultant Co 1.5 Ni 1.5 S 4 flower-like nanosheets have formed, which demonstrated higher specific capacitance than Co 9 S 8 , NiCo 2 S 4 and CoNi 2 S 4 , and showed good rate capability. All-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor device was fabricated using the Co 1.5 Ni 1.5 S 4 flower-like nanosheets and active carbon as electrodes. The device retained 91 % of its original specific capacitance after 1000 charge-discharge cycles at a current density of 5 A g -1 , which demonstrated that the long-term cycling stability of Co 1.5 Ni 1.5 S 4 flower-like nanosheets are outstanding. These excellent properties can be mainly attributed to the unique architecture with large surface area and interspaces. The device in series could light a red LED indicator. Our strategy provides a remarkable way to fabricate all-solid-state energy storage devices for various applications including wearable microelectronics.
Molybdenum and Sulfur Co-Doped CoNiO2 with Tremella-Like Nano-Structures As Electrode Material for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Heteroatomic doping has a significant effect on improving the electrochemical energy storage of metal oxide electrode materials and has been applied in the field of supercapacitors. However, there are few reports on the co-doping of anions and cations into transition metal oxides as the electrode materials in supercapacitors. Herein, the Mo, S co-doped CoNiO2 electrode material with tremella-like nano-structures was successfully prepared on nickel foam (denoted as NiCoMoO-S@NF) via two-step hydrothermal procedures and UV-light irradiation. The co-doping of Mo and S gives the CoNiO2 material a higher specific surface area of 113.98 m2 g-1, abundant active site, and improved electrical conductivity. The obtained NiCoMoO-S@NF shows a high specific capacity of 999.1C g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. Moreover, the hybrid supercapacitor device assembled by NiCoMoO-S@NF and rGO@NF can obtain a great energy density of 38.8 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 2880 W kg-1 and shows good cycling stability of 71.6 % capacity retention after 6500 cycles, indicating the excellent super -capacitive properties of NiCoMoO-S@NF and its potential application in supercapacitors.
Graphene-quantum-dots Induced NiCo2S4 with Hierarchical-Like Hollow Nanostructure for Supercapacitors with Enhanced Electrochemical Performance

Abstract:As a new class of zero-dimensional (0D) carbon nanomaterial, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have attracted increasing attentions due to their unique properties of both graphene and quantum dots. In this paper, GQDs-decorated hierarchical-like hollow NiCo2S4 nanostructures are fabricated through simple two-step hydrothermal reactions. Compared with the bare NiCo2S4 nanowires, it is found that the surface morphology and internal structure have been changed with the introduction of the GQDs during the similar growth process. The unique nanostructures have resulted in better electrochemical performance for supercapacitors, such as good rate capability, high specific capacitance (678.22 F g(-1) at the current density of 0.2 A g(-1)) and enhanced cycling stability (94% retention after 5000 cycles), due to the lower impedance, larger specific surface area, more interspace and pathways for both ion diffusion and volume changes. These results show that the introduction of the GQDs during the fabrication process could be a feasible route to obtain novel nanostructures, and the GQDs decorated nanocomposites are promising for the development of next generation electrochemical devices. Preparation of NiCo2O4@CoS Heterojunction Composite As Electrodes for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:It is a preferred method by constructing core - shell structured composites with heterojunctions to enhance the charge transfer and improve electrochemical performances for supercapacitors. In this work, we prepare NiCo2O4@CoS electrode materials on nickel foam via coating n - type CoS on p - type NiCo2O4 to form heterojunctions. The composite shows a synergistic effect from each component and has abundant active sites, as well as outstanding reaction kinetics. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis reveals that the NiCo2O4@CoS composite exhibits higher electronic conductivity than any single component. The NiCo2O4@CoS electrode presents an outstanding capacitance of 1902.5F g(-1) at the current density of 1 A g(-1). A hybrid capacitor with NiCo2O4@CoS as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode shows a high energy density of 32.91 Wh kg(-1) at the power density of 425 W kg(-1) and an excellent stability of 81.5% initial capacitance after 5000 cycles at 1 A g(-1). The conclusions indicate that the heterojunction of NiCo2O4@CoS can be a potential electrode for supercapacitors.
Facile synthesis Mn/Co dual-doped Ni3S2 nanosheets for supercapacitor

Abstract:Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets dual-doped with manganese, cobalt elements on conductive nickel foam (MC-Ni 3 S 2 ) had been synthesized by two steps hydrothermal and directly applied as the electrode for high-performance electrochemical Supercapacitors (SCs). A plausible mechanism is proposed to explain the formation of the manganese, cobalt elements dual-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets. SCs electrodes based on the MC-Ni 3 S 2 nanosheets are characterized and exhibit a specific capacitance of 2922 F g −1 (365.3 mAh g −1 ) at 2 A g −1 . After 2000 cycles, it exhibited an excellent cycling stability owing to the unique nanosheets architecture providing fast ion/electron transfer. The fabricate approach may offer a new strategy for the synthesis of other mix transition metal sulfide for applications in supercapacitor.

Abstract:To improve the low energy density, low conductivity, and poor cycling stability of NiCo2S4 in supercapacitors, a two-step hydrothermal method was used to prepare a composite material of NiCo2S4 and carbon nanosheets (NiCo2S4/CNs). The electrochemical tests revealed a high specific capacitance of 1576 F g-1 at 1 A/g for the composite, and the NiCo2S4/CNs//AC asymmetric supercapacitor showed a energy density of 49.7 Wh kg-1 at 818 W kg-1. This study confirmed the phase transformation of NiCo2S4 during charge/discharge in alkaline solution through ex-situ X-ray diffraction (ex-situ XRD) for the first time, and proposed a potential reaction pathway. Moreover, Density Functional Theory (DFT) confirmed that the NiCo2S4/CNs heterostructure enhances OH- adsorption/desorption on Ni and Co active sites and improves electronic conductivity. In conclusion, this study advances the application of transition metal sulfide in high-performance energy storage.

Rational Design of NiCo 2 S 4 Nanosheet Arrays Modified by Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots with Enhanced Charge Storage Performance for Flexible Supercapacitors

Abstract:In this work, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) are introduced into the honeycomb structure of NiCo2S4 nanoarrays on a carbon cloth by electrodeposition, which significantly enhances the electrochemical performances of NiCo2S4 as an electrode of hybrid supercapacitors. The honeycomb framework structure of NiCo2S4 nanosheets not only increases more active sites but also improves the structural stability of the electrode material. At the same time, the introduction of N-GQDs improves the wettability of NiCo2S4 and effectively reduces its internal resistance. As an electrode material, the NiCo2S4/N-GQDs@CC composite shows outstanding capacitive properties with an areal capacity of 1803 mC cm–2 at 3 mA cm–2. In addition, the assembled symmetric supercapacitor device can provide a high energy density of 127 μWh cm–2 at a power density of 1000 μW cm–2, good rate performance, and cycle stability. After 2500 cycles, the capacity retention rate can still reach 83%. The outstanding charge storage capability may be due to the synergistic effect between its unique honeycomb structure, high porosity, and improved electrical properties of N-GQDs. This simple and controllable synthesis strategy provides a reference for energy storage applications.

Abstract:A facile one-step hydrothermal route has been developed to directly synthesize CoNi2S4 nanoparticles on carbon fiber cloth (CC) to study the synergistic effect of bimetallic sulfides and carbon substrate on the electrochemical performance of supercapacitor electrode. The integrated binder-free CoNi2S4/CC electrode possesses an outstanding specific capacitance of 1165 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, and excellent rate capacitance (75.3% retention at 10 A g−1) in a three-electrode system, which is 27.2% and 32.2% higher than that of pure CoNi2S4 electrode. Detailed electrochemical tests and results showed that the surface capacitance effect ratio of the CoNi2S4/CC electrode is higher than that of pure CoNi2S4 electrode because of the introduction of CC. The CC substrates can provide a channel for electrolyte electrons and ions to promote reaction kinetics and shorten the diffusion distance of the redox reaction, thereby improving the performance of the pseudocapacitor CoNi2S4. Besides, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitors based on CoNi2S4/CC electrode and reduced graphene oxide electrode displayed a high specific energy density of 33.2 Wh kg−1 at 800 W kg−1, remarkable electrochemical stability (87.1% retention after 10,000 circulations) and high rate stability.
