Abstract:Two new isostructural 3D lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), [Ln 2 (L) 3 (H 2 O) 2 ]·2H 2 O·2DMF ( 1-Ln , Ln = Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ , H 2 L = 5-triazole isophthalic acid) with uncoordinated triazole groups decorating the channels were successfully synthesized via solvothermal reaction. The uncoordinated triazole groups act as reserved host-guest binding sites to adjust the luminescence intensity of the Ln 3+ ion. Luminescence studies reveal that 1-Eu and 1-Tb as fluorescent probes both exhibit high sensitivities and excellent selectivities towards nitroaromatics (NACs) and Fe 3+ in DMF system by luminescence quenching process. The quenching mechanisms were investigated through PXRD, DFT theory calculation, XPS, UV-Vis and discussed in details.

Abstract:The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), {[Cd(L)(H2O)]CH3OHDMF} (1) and [Pb(L)(DMF)] (2) (L = 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde nicotinoylhydrazone), were synthesized and characterized using microanalyses, IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single crystal X-ray analyses revealed that both 1 and 2 exhibit 2D grid networks. The photoluminescence investigation indicates that 1 and 2 could be a prospective candidate for developing luminescencent sensors for the selective sensing of nitrobenzene, which is used as a precursor for explosives. The luminescent properties of 1 and 2 in different solvents were investigated and corroborated by theoretical calculations. Additionally compounds 1 and 2 also show selective sensing ability for Fe3+ as well as for CrO42- ions.

Abstract:Two luminescent Cd(II) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were prepared from electron-rich π-conjugated fluorescent ligands. They are isostructural with sql nets. Their strong luminescences can be quenched by a series of nitroaromatic explosives. Notably, MOF 1 shows highly selective and sensitive detection of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), while MOF 2 exhibits good responses toward picric acid (PA) compared with other nitroaromatic explosives. This different order of quenching efficiency is because there are H-bonding interactions between MOF 1 and 4-NP, while MOF 2 lacks these H-bonding interactions. MOF 1 displays highly selective and sensitive detection of 4-NP with the high quenching constant (6.74× 104 M-1) and low detection limit (34.48 ppb), which is better than those of known MOFs. MOF 1 and MOF 2 have highly sensitive and selective detection of 4-NP and PA in the practical application, respectively.

Abstract:Two new luminescent Cd(II)-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), {[Cd(L)(BPDC)]center dot 2H(2)O)}(n) (1) and {[Cd(L)(SDBA)(H2O)]center dot 0.5H(2)O}(n) (2) [L = 4,4'-(2,5-bis(methylthio)-1,4-phenylene)dipyridine, H2BPDC = 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, H(2)SDBA = 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid], have been solvothetmally synthesized using Cd2+ ion and L ligand in the presence of auxiliary ligands and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetry measurement. Topological analyses reveal that MOF 1 is a 6-connected 3-fold interpenetrating pcu network, and MOF 2 is a new 4-connected 2-fold interpenetrating network. Fluorescence titration, cyclic and anti interference experiments demonstrate that MOFs 1 and 2 both are excellent probes for Fe3+, CrO42-, and Cr2O72-. The mechanisms of quenching are also deeply studied.
White‐Light‐Emitting Ln‐MOF as Luminescent Probe for Selective Detection of Nitroaromatic Compounds

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) as an efficient and convenient sensing material for environmental pollutants have attracted widespread attention in recent years. Here in, we synthesized a series of lanthanide co‐doping MOFs, EuxTb1‐x‐MOFs (x=0, 0.005, 0.00667, 0.01, 0.02 and 1) under solvothermal conditions. The luminescence colors can be adjusted by changing metal molar mass ratios and altering excitation wavelength. Fortunately, a near white‐light‐emitting material Eu0.01Tb0.99‐MOF was obtained under the excitation at 350 nm, whose CIE coordinates of (0.3444, 0.3409) are very close to standard white light coordinates (0.3333, 0.3333). We further studied the fluorescence sensing performances of Eu‐MOF, Tb‐MOF and Eu0.01Tb0.99‐MOF towards NACs. The results indicate that all MOFs can selectively detect 4‐nitroaniline, 4‐nitrophenol and 2‐nitrophenol with good sensitivity and recyclability.

Abstract:The precise unification of functional groups and photoluminescence properties can give rise to MOFs that can offer diverse applications like selective detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) which are considered to be an important ingredient of explosive as well as cation and anion sensing. Hence, a new 3D metal-organic framework (MOF) [Cd2(btc)(bib)(HCOO)(H2O)·H2O]n (1) has been synthesized using mixed ligand strategy by solvothermal reaction of cadmium acetate with two ligands viz. 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3btc) and 1,4-bis(2-methyl-imidazol-1-yl)butane (bib). The MOF 1 possesses highly 10-connected network which is based on {Cd4(btc)2(bib)4} molecular building block. The studies showed that 1 could be taken as the fluorescent sensor for sensitive recognition of NACs, in particular 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) with notable quenching (Ksv = 5.42 × 104 M−1) and LOD of 1.77 ppm. Additionally, 1 also displayed selective sensing for Fe3+ ions with Ksv = 6.05 × 103 M− 1 and LOD = 1.56 ppm. Also, this dual sensor displayed excellent reusability toward the detection of TNP and Fe3+ ion. Theoretical calculations have been performed to propose the probable mechanism for the sensing luminescence intensity. Calculations indicated that because of the charge transfer and weak interaction that is operating between NACs and MOF, the weakening in the photoluminescence intensity resulted.

Novel double layer lanthanide metal-organic networks for sensing applications.

Abstract:A trifunctional aromatic building block (H2L) containing three different types of functional groups (carboxyl C([double bond, length as m-dash]O)OH, aldehyde C([double bond, length as m-dash]O)H, and O-ether) was applied for the hydrothermal synthesis of two novel lanthanide 2D coordination polymers [Ln(μ-HL)(μ3-L)(phen)]n {Ln = Tb (1) and Eu (2); H2L = 5-methoxy-(4-benzaldehyde)-1,3-benzene dicarboxylic acid; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline}. Both compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and reveal very complicated 2D metal-organic double layers with the 3,4L27 topology. The presence of free aldehyde groups positioned outside of the double layers opens up a possibility of using them as functional groups toward sensing amines and small organic molecules. The fluorescence measurements for the Tb derivative 1 reveal that it acts as an efficient fluorescence sensor for p-phenylenediamine, benzidine and acetone molecules via a luminescence quenching effect. A similar sensing behavior was observed for the Eu compound 2. Moreover, thin-films of 1-PEG on glass (1-PEG-glass thin-film material) were fabricated and investigated for the detection of amine vapors.
Assembly of Two Isostructural Metal-organic Frameworks Based on Hetero-N,O Donor Ligand for Detecting Nitro Explosives

Abstract:Two isostructural metal-organic frameworks, [NO3][M3(H2O)3O(TBA)3]·2DMF·6H2O(1 and 2)[M=In and Fe, H2TBA=4-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-benzoic acid], have been successfully synthesized. Compounds 1 and 2 have three- dimensional structures bridged via the typical 6-connected tri-nuclear cluster units M3O(COO)6 and linear linker H2TBA. The whole 3D framework possesses a 6-connected acs topology. Notably, by the fluorescence technique, compound 1 can detect nitro explosives through fluorescence quenching effect, especially for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol(TNP, Ksv=3.64× 104 L/mol). Furthermore, the fluorescence spectrum red shifts as the number of −NO2 group increases. Based on the aforementioned consideration, compound 1 can be considered as a potential luminescent probe for the detection of TNP.
Two 3D Metal−organic Frameworks As Multi-Functional Materials to Detect Fe 3+ Ions and Nitroaromatic Explosives and to Encapsulate Ln 3+ Ions for White-Light Emission

Abstract:Two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely {[Zn3(L)2(4,4′-bipy)(DMF)2]·2H2O}n (1) and {[Cd3(L)2(4,4′-bipy)(H2O)2].2DMF}n (2) (4,4′-bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), were solvothermally prepared based on a rigid tricarboxylic acid 3-(3,5-dicarboxylphenyl)-5-(3-carboxylphenyl)-1-H-1,2,4-triazole (H3L). X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals that 1 and 2 are isostructural and both emit blue light. Notably, 1 exhibits good luminescent sensing for nitro-containing compounds and Fe3+ ions. In addition, the emission colors of 1 can be tuned from yellow to white and to blue by encapsulating different mole ratios of Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions and changing the excitation wavelength. A white emission with the Commission International de l’Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.331, 0.337), which fall within the white-light region, emerges upon excitation at 340nm.

Abstract:The stability and functionality of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are particularly important in considering their potential and/or practical use. Herein we report two novel aldehyde functional group-containing MOFs [Zn2(L)(BDC)2]·2DMF·MeOH·H2O (1) and [Co2(L)(BDC)2]·2DMF·2MeOH·H2O (2) (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, MeOH = methanol) achieved by reactions of mixed organic ligands of 2,4-bis[(pyridin-4-yl)methoxy]benzaldehyde (L) and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H2BDC) with the corresponding metal salts under solvothermal conditions. Both 1 and 2 are 2-fold interpenetrated three-dimensional (3D) frameworks. Particularly, 1 exhibits excellent water and wide-range pH stability, and a large Qst value for carbon dioxide (CO2) adsorption. Furthermore, photoluminescence (PL) studies indicate that 1 could be considered as a potential luminescent probe for detection of nitroaromatics.

Abstract:Two isomorphic 3D MOFs [Cd(2-bpeb)(sdba)] (1) and [Zn(2-bpeb)(sdba)] derived from the pi-conjugated proligand 2-(4-((E)-2-(pyridine-2-yl)vinyl)styryl)pyridine (2-bpeb) and 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoate (H(2)sdba) were synthesized and characterized. Complexes 1 and 2 exhibit striking fluorescence properties and can function as chemical sensors via rapid luminescence quenching in the presence of Fe3+ and Cr2O72- in aqueous media with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Abstract:A Cd(II)-MOF, {[Cd(L)(4,4'-bipy)]center dot H2O center dot DMF}(n) (1) (L = nicotinic acid (2,4-dihydroxybenzylidene)-hydrazide and 4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine), has been synthesized and characterized by microanalyses, FTIR, TGA, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Additionally, powder X-ray diffraction was performed to check the phase purity of the synthesized compound. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1 has a 2D grid network. Photoluminescent sensing of nitrobenzene, Fe(III) and CrO42- ions indicates that 1 could be a candidate for developing selective luminescent sensors for these species. Theoretical calculations have been performed to gain insight into the possible mechanism of quenching effect in emission on addition of nitrobenzene in 1 which supports the mechanism operating through ground state charge transfer between 1 and nitrobenzene.[GRAPHICS].

Abstract:The bowl‐shaped carboxylic acid zwitterion 1,1′,1′′‐(2,4,6‐trimethylbenzene‐1,3,5‐triyl)tris (methylene)‐tris(4‐carboxy‐pyridinium)tribromide (H3LBr3) ligand‐based lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (Ln‐MOFs) was synthesized for the first time. The Ln‐MOF shows outstanding sensitivities and selectivities for sensing nitrobenzene (NB), Fe3+, and Cr2O72−. The bowl‐shaped flexible carboxylic acid zwitterion 1,1′,1′′‐(2,4,6‐trimethylbenzene‐1,3,5‐triyl)tris (methylene)‐tris(4‐carboxy‐pyridinium)tribromide (H3LBr3) ligand‐based lanthanide metal–organic framework (Ln‐MOF) was synthesized for the first time under solvothermal conditions. Single crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis indicates that the molecular formula of Ln‐MOF is [EuL2(H2O)4Br3]·2H2O (1). Luminescence sensing experiments demonstrate that 1 shows obvious fluorescence quenching for nitrobenzene (NB), Fe3+, and Cr2O72− with low detection limits of 0.118 μM, 9.098 nM, and 17.409 nM, respectively. 1 can be regarded as a luminescence sensor with multiple functions, displaying high selectivity, wonderful antiinterference ability, outstanding sensitivity, and recyclability to detect NB, Fe3+, and Cr2O72−.

Abstract:Abstract Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively investigated as sensors for detection of various compounds. In this work, 5,5',5''-((benzene-1,3,5-tricarbonyl)tris(azanediyl))triisophthalic acid (H6L) and 1,3,5-tri(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene (tib) were reacted with Cd(NO3)2·4H2O under solvothermal conditions to generate a MOF [Cd3(H2O)3(L)(tib)2]·5DMA·4H2O (1) (DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that 1 is a 2-fold interpenetrated three-dimensional framework composed of Cd-L and Cd-tib two-dimensional networks. Furthermore, its fluorescence and sensing capability towards common organic compounds were explored. The results indicate that 1 could function as a fluorescent probe for nitro-aromatic compounds, especially for 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Two novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, [Ni(3-bpmh)(HEA)·2H2O]n (1) and [Zn(3-bpmh)(HEA)·H2O]n (2) (3-bpmh=1,4-bis(3-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene, o-H2HEA=1,2-phenylenediacetic acid), respectively, were hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Single crystal structures revealed that 1 and 2 were two-dimensional structure and two-dimensional (4,4)-topological layer structure respectively. In addition, compound 2 had a selective sensing effect on ions. Therefore, it was possible to detect Cr2O7 2−, CrO4 2− and Fe3+ ions by fluorescence quenching.

Abstract:Developing luminescent sensors based metal organic framework (MOFs) for the detection of antibiotics and metal ions is still a major challenge. The two new ternary Cd(II)-based MOFs, namely, {[C d (BTA) 0.5 (L) 0.5 ] n } ( 1 ) and {[C d (HBTC)(L)] n } ( 2 ) (H 4 BTA = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid, H 3 BTC = 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid, and L = 1,4-bis(2-((1 H -imidazol-1-yl)methyl)-1 H -benzo[ d ]imidazol-1-yl)but‐2-ene), were hydrothermally synthesized and characterized. 1 displays a 4,4-connected sqc183 topological framework with point symbol {4 2 .8 4 }, while 2 exhibits a 4,5-connected sqc65 framework with point symbol {4 2 .6 4 }{4 3 .6 7 } 2 . Both 1 and 2 display remarkable luminescence emission and enable selective detection of NFZ and Fe 3+ ions with high anti-interference ability as well as excellent thermal and pH stability. The limits of detection (LOD) of 1 and 2 for nitrofurazone (NFZ) are 4.5 × 10 −7 mol·L −1 and 9.0 × 10 −7 mol·L −1 , respectively. The LOD toward Fe 3+ for 1 is 1.4 × 10 −5 mol·L −1 , for 2 is 6.2 × 10 −6 mol·L −1 . To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of MOFs bearing L ligands as dual-functional luminescent sensors for sensing NFZ and Fe 3+ ions. In addition, the mechanism of luminescence quenching was investigated.

Abstract:Two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Zn(BIPA)(tfbdc)]n (1) and {[Cd(BIPA)(tfbdc)(H2O)]·DMF}n (2), were hydrothermally synthesized using the self-assembly of the "V-shape" BIPA ligand (bis(4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)amine) and the H2tfbdc ligand (2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid) with Zn/Cd metal salts. 1 is a 2D hcb framework and 2 is a 2D sql network. Their applications in detecting metal and inorganic ions were also explored. The results indicate that 1 exhibits dual-responsive photoluminescence sensing for Fe3+ and Cr2O72- ions while 2 can detect Hg2+ and Cr2O72- ions.
Design of "turn-off" luminescent Ln-MOFs for sensitive detection of cyanide anion

Abstract:Two novel 2D lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs), namely {[Eu2(DBTA)3(DMF)2]·DMF}n(1), {[Tb2(DBTA)3(DMF)2]·DMF}n(2), (H2DBTA=2,5-Dibromoterephthalic acid) have been successfully synthesized by the solvothermal method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction results proved that the complexes possess the same topological structure with (42·6)2(42·84)(47·63)2-connected net. The recognization of CN- from interfering anions with low detection limit by "turn-off" luminescence makes it promising candidate for highly selective and sensitive detection of cyanide ion. The Ln-MOFs 1 and 2 exhibit excellent chemical sensing properties to CN- with efficiency, selectivity, and excellent performance in various mixed anions. The evaluation parameters, including quenching constant and detection limit, have been performed to investigate the detection performance of CN-.

Abstract:Four novel Cu(I)-based metal-organic frameworks, [Cu 3 ( p -IPIB)(CN)Cl 2 ] n ( Cu(I)-MOF-7 ), [Cu 3 ( p -IPIB)(CN)Cl 2 ] n ( Cu(I)-MOF-8 ), [Cu 3 ( p -IPIB)Cl 3 ] n ( Cu(I)-MOF-9 ) and [Cu 2 ( p -IPIB-Cl) 1/2 Cl 2 (H 2 O)] n ( Cu(I)-MOF-10 ) where ligand p -IPIB is 1,4-bis[(2-(4-(1H- imidazol -1- yl )- phenyl )-1H- imidazole -1- yl )- methyl ]-benzene, have been successfully synthesized by in-situ reduction of Cu(II) under solvothermal reaction condition. Single X-ray diffraction analysis shown that Cu(I)-MOF-7 and 8 are not only structural supramolecular isomerism containing cyano-bridge which was in situ obtained from the cleavage of the CCN bond of acetonitrile solvent, but also a 3D twofold interpenetration metallo-supramolecular assembly for Cu(I)-MOF-7 and a 3D porous supramolecular assembly containing the macrometallacyclic box structure for Cu(I)-MOF-8 , respectively. Cu(I)-MOF-9 is a 1D channel polymeric chain motif with macrometallacyclic structure containing [Cu 3 Cl 3 ] cluster of μ 3 - and μ 2 -chloride bridge. And Cu(I)-MOF-10 is also a 3D twofold interpenetration metallo-supramolecular assembly with [Cu 4 Cl 3 (H 2 O) 2 ] cluster of μ 4 -chloride bridge. They are thermally stable and exhibit apparent porous properties with adsorption of N 2 and CO 2 gas. The fluorescence sensing experiment indicated that Cu(I)-MOF 7–10 can be used for detecting nitroaromatic explosives through fluorescence quenching in the solution and they have the best sensing effects on the detection of 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol (TNP). Especially, Cu(I)-MOF-9 has the best sensing property towards TNP with a higher quenching constant of 4.53 × 10 4 L/mol and a lower detection limit of 1.21 ppm.

Abstract:The reaction of Zn(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O/Cd(NO3)(2)center dot 4H(2)O with a semi-flexible ligand 4'-(4-(3,5-dicarboxylphenoxy) phenyl)-4,2': 6',4"-terpyridine (H(2)dbp) gave two new metal-organic frameworks of [Zn(dbp)](n) (1) and [Cd(dbp)(H2O)center dot 2H(2)O center dot CH3CN](n) (2). Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that both 1 and 2 show three-dimensional, two-fold interpenetrating four-connected networks with 4(4).6(10).8 topology. The photoluminescence investigation indicates that both 1 and 2 could be prospective candidates for developing luminescence sensors for the sensing of Mn2+, Cr2O72- and nitroaromatic analytes. Furthermore, the photocatalysis properties of 1-2 for the degradation of methyl violet and rhodamine B were examined.
