Abstract:Surface polarization characteristics provide crucial structural information of the Earth's surface. As two key elements of the natural geographical environment, rocks and soils play an important role in the study of surface processes. Inherent surface characteristics, such as surface roughness, composition, and density are critical parameters for the remote monitoring of land surfaces as they affect the polarization characteristics of scattered light waves. In this study, we investigated the relationship between surface roughness, composition, and density, and the polarization spectra of limestone-dolomite series rock. Results reveal a power function relationship between the surface roughness and the degree of polarization peaks among different detection zenith and azimuth angles. The depth and position of the absorbing waveband are significantly correlated with the characteristic component contents. The rock density was determined via the polarized reflection spectra, with the Earth's surface density calculations associated with a 2.6% divergence from the current recognized data. Our results demonstrate the ability of polarized spectra to retrieve surface roughness, composition, and density, with potential for further development in future work.

Abstract:In the real world, vegetation, liquid surfaces, rocks, buildings, snows, clouds, fogs, etc. can all be regarded as natural polarizers. In the process of reflecting, transmitting, and scattering of electromagnetic radiations, land surface objects can produce polarized features that are related to the nature of the materials. These polarized information can determine objects ’ properties, and therefore, detecting the polarization information of objects becomes a new method of remote sensing. Polarization of reflected and scattered solar electromagnetic radiation adds a new dimension to the understanding of the Earth ’ s objects ’ properties. The polarized bidirectional reflectance characteristics and polarized hyperspectral properties of land objects were methodically studied. The results of the polar- ized bidirectional reflectance characteristics can provide the theoretical basis for polarization remote sensing such as the detecting conditions, modeling and others. The polarized spec- tral property of the typical objects can be used as the spectral basis for polarization remote sensing. The atmospheric correction is a key problem when using polarization remote sensing method to detect land objects ’ information, because scattered atmospheric particles exhibit stronger polarization phenomena than land objects do. A method of using atmo- spheric neutral point for the separation polarization effect between objects and atmosphere has been proposed.

Effects of Wavelength on Polarization Correlated Imaging of Rough Surface Objects

Abstract:Correlated imaging is a research hotspot in recent years. It shows advantages over conventional optical imaging on scanning and imaging rate, noise immunity and so on, and has good application prospects in military electronic reconnaissance and other fields According to the basic principle of polarization correlation imaging, this paper established the spectral polarization BRDF model of rough surface. Taking two typical materials of aluminum alloy and PC plastic as target and background, the effects of wavelength on polarization correlated imaging of rough surface objects is analyzed. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the wavelength has little influence on the conventional correlated imaging, and the effects on the polarization correlated imaging appear in complex refractive index, linear polarization and contrast. The wavelength of the best imaging quality can be determined according to different material properties of the set target and the known background.

Abstract:When utilizing polarization remote sensing for earth observation, or atmosphere scattering, the polarization effect of atmosphere is always higher than the land surfaced. It is usually believed that the polarization effect of the atmosphere is the main information resource of the remote sensing sensor. Thus the land surfaced polarization is often ignored in remote sensing retrieval. This conclusion is based on the assumption that tire reflection of land objects is diffuse reflection. However, in most cases, land objects are not standard Lambertian. Sometimes tire polarization effect of those objects is stronger than the atmosphere. In this study, the reflection mechanism of tire land surface and the interpretation model of polarization spectrum were deduced. Our results show that the imaging spectrum experiment has the land Surface polarization effect which can even reach to 50% or more in some cases. The polarization signal of sensor will be greatly affected by the land surface. So the polarization effect of land surface is an important factor which call not be ignored during the study of quantitative remote sensing.

Abstract:Quantitative studies of atmospheric aerosol particles are key to atmospheric polarization remote sensing physics, because aerosol particles are decisive factors affecting the remote sensing atmospheric window. Furthermore, atmospheric polarization characteristics can be described through space polarization diagram theory and atmospheric polarization neutral point zone theory, which is equally effective to space polarization field theory when describing atmospheric polarization characteristics. To be specific, polarization is the physical basis for atmospheric scattering given the importance of its polarization features and proves the single scattering characteristics of non-spherical aerosol and polarization observations, to quantify the atmosphere through polarization methods. It also underpins multiple scattering based on non-spherical models and multiple flat distributions of the full-sky polarization field, to achieve atmospheric three-dimensional chromatography at various observation angles, separation inversion of non-spherical aerosol, and land surface information based on space polarization field theory. The theories expounded in Chaps. 7 and 8 are combined to constitute polarization field vector features for use in remote sensing.

Abstract:Since the polarization image contains abundant information of the object, the detecting ability of imaging system would be improved via observing the polarization features of this object. On the basis of analysis to the polarization characteristics, the active polarized imaging method is introduced in this paper, and active polarized imaging platform is built. Through this system, 3 typical samples of aluminum, iron with yellow coating, iron with green coating are adopted to simulate different objects on the sea. By measuring the parameters of amplitude ratio P, phase retardation θ, and completely depolarized coefficient ωd on the platform, which stand for the surface property of the material, we can testify the accuracy of the idea. The experiments result shows that the measured P and θ values are consistent with Fresnel equations, while for ωd , the value of seawater differs from that of the other two coating samples dramatically. As a result, it is feasible to discriminate coating target on the sea by measuring the depolarization characteristics.

Abstract:Multi-angle polarization remote sensing has wide application in objects recognition.On the basis of polarized detection mechanism,the space characteristics of the polarized reflection spectrum and the variation law of the polarized D-value curve constituted by the vertical vibration component and parallel vibration component of the reflected light are discussed.As a result,the D-value of vibration component and parallel vibration component of the reflected light vary with the reflective index,and the values reach the maximum at the light's incidence angle is about 80°.Along with the increase of the reflective index,the value of R⊥-∥ gradually increases,and along with the incidence angle increases from 0° to 90°,the value of R⊥-∥ firstly increases and then decreases.Compared the information of polarized D-value spectrum with the information of intensity spectrum,small discrepancy of object is enhanced;compared the information of multi-angle polarization spectrum with the information of single angle polarization spectrum,smaller discrepancy of object is enhanced in a specific incidence angle.
Influence of Surface Roughness on Degree of Polarization of Biotite Plagioclase Gneiss Varying with Viewing Angle

Abstract:Polarized reflectance is influenced by such factors as its physical and chemical properties, the viewing geometry composed of light incident zenith, viewing zenith and viewing azimuth relative to light incidence, surface roughness and texture, surface density, detection wavelengths, polarization phase angle and so on. In the present paper, the influence of surface roughness on the degree of polarization (DOP) of biotite plagioclase gneiss varying with viewing angle was inquired and analyzed quantitatively. The polarized spectra were measured by ASD FS3 spectrometer on the goniometer located in Northeast Normal University. When the incident zenith angle was fixed at 50 degrees, it was showed that on the rock surfaces with different roughness, in the specular reflection direction, the DOP spectrum within 350-2500 nm increased to the highest value first, and then began to decline varying with viewing zenith angle from 0 degree to 80 degrees. The characterized band (520 +/- 10) nm was picked out for further analysis. The correlation analysis between the peak DOP value of zenith and surface roughness showed that they are in a power function relationship, with the regression equation: y = 0.604x(-0.297), R2 = 0.985 4. The correlation model of the angle where the peak is in and the surface roughness is y = 3.4194x + 51.584, y < 90 degrees , R2 = 0.8177. With the detecting azimuth farther away from 180 degrees azimuth where the maximum DOP exists, the DOP lowers gradually and tends to 0. In the detection azimuth 180 dgrees , the correlation analysis between the peak values of DOP on the (520 =/- 10) nm band for five rocks and their surface roughness indicates a power function, with the regression equation being y = 0.5822x(-0.333), R2 = 0.9843. F tests of the above regression models indicate that the peak value and its corresponding viewing angle correlate much with surface roughness. The study provides a theoretical base for polarization remote sensing, and impels the rock and city architecture discrimination and minerals mapping.

Abstract:Polarization remote sensing can be used to obtain polarization data for a given target. It can be acquire not only radiation data, as also measured by conventional remote sensing, but also to quantify the polarization of the target according to its intrinsic characteristics. Polarization remote sensing allows for more accurate quantification of ground objects. The polarization pattern of the whole sky, neutral point concept, separation of ground-gas parameters, and multi-angle observation of atmospheric particles underpin atmospheric polarization remote sensing. Polarization remote sensing measurements of a target surface provide relatively reliable polarization information, which is indispensable in modern optical remote sensing. Bionic polarization-based autonomous navigation, advanced space-based polarization detection, and global change research based on the Earth polarization phenomenon are new application areas of polarization remote sensing.

Abstract:Polarization is an important characteristic of electromagnetic wave, and using polarization information to study ground features has been proved to be an effective means. Research on ground feature’s polarized properties is an essential part of earth observation. At present, it is in highly need of accurate polarization sensors globally. AirMSPI , (Airborne Multiangle Spectro-Polarimetric Imager) as a new airborne polarized sensor, can obtain multi-band and multi-angle polarization data, and the spatial resolution can reach to ~10 meters. Using the experimental data of Tracy in the year of 2013, this paper analyzes the varying pattern of DOLP (Degree of Linear Polarization) as well as pBRF(polarized Bidirectional Reflectance Factor) in 470 nm, 660 nm, 865 nm bands and 9 view zenith angles. The result shows that, forward scattering of ground features contains plenty of polarized radiation, and ground features present strong non-lambertian effect near principal plane of incidence. DOLP and pBRF has strong correlation to relative position between incidence and view angle. DOLP reaches the maximum value when two directions are perpendicular while pBRF increases with larger view zenith angle. Because of atmospheric effect, radiance of blue band contains most polarized light. However, red and infrared band can attenuate atmospheric molecular polarization scattering effectively, thus contain more polarization details of ground features. Water, artificial structure, residential area, bare soil and vegetation show distinct polarization characteristics, and can be clearly identified. Due to depolarization effect from multi-scattering effect, DOLP and reflected radiation intensity have highly negative correlation, with correlation coefficient generally more than -0.8. AirMSPI sensor can provide high-quality polarization data, as a strong verification to ground-based and satellite-based polarization data, and support parameters inversion of atmosphere and ground features.

Abstract:Polarization, together with intensity, frequency, and phase, are the four main physical features of remote sensing using electromagnetic waves. This chapter discusses the physical rationale of remote sensing. For the two bottleneck problems we have in remote sensing, namely (1) restriction from the two ends of electromagnetic spectrum reflected by land objects and (2) atmospheric window attenuation difference, this chapter provides three breakthroughs: (1) the basis from which to support “bright light attenuation” and “weak light intensification” in the area of polarized remote sensing of land objects, this can greatly expand the detection range at both the dark and the bright ends of remote sensing data inversion; (2) accurate description of polarization methods and research on the rules of atmospheric attenuation, as well as exploration of the basis for new atmosphere window theory of atmosphere polarized remote sensing.

Abstract:Using polarization measurements in remote sensing and optical studies allows retrieving more information. We consider relationship between the reflection coefficients of plane and rough surfaces for linearly polarized waves. Certain polarization properties of reflected waves and polarization invariants, in particular at incident angle of forty five degrees, allow finding amplitude and phase characteristics of reflected waves. Based on this study, we introduce methods for finding dielectric permittivity, temperature and geometrical characteristics of observed surfaces. Experimental results prove that these methods can be used for different practical purposes in technological and remote sensing applications, in a broad range of electromagnetic spectrum.

Abstract:Polarization detection provides us with novel information to reflect the target attribute. Compared with traditional remote sensing methods, multi-angle polarization has relatively stable correlation and regularity. RSP(research scanning polarimeter)is an airborne prototype for the APS(aerosol polarimetery sensor) developed by the USA, which can provide with us the polarization detection information of 9 channels. We can get optical properties and physical characteristics of vegetation by analyzing stable multi-angle and multi-band polarization detection information from preprocessing scanning polarization data of flight test. In this paper, after making registration based on flight attitude information, a comparative analysis is made between characteristics of reflectance and polarization reflectance with visible light and near infrared band of the view zenith angles between 30 degree and 65 degree, based on dense area and sparse area(close to bare field) of vegetation. The results show that both dense area and sparse area demonstrate regular characteristics of polarization degree. The area close to hot spot area has highest reflectance energy. In contrast,. it has relatively least energy of polarization degree, which can prevent strong reflectance energy from influencing the stability of detector. Because the degree of polarization in dense area of vegetation is higher than that in sparse area at visible light band while that in concentration area of vegetation is lower than sparse area at near infrared light band, it shows that the visible light band information of dense area of vegetation that the sensor received is dominated by single scattering while the near infrared light band information of dense area of vegetation is dominated by multiple scattering.

Abstract:The Bidirectional polarization distribution function (BPDF) of land surfaces is important for studies of land surfaces and aerosol. With the availability of a huge number of polarization measurements, several semi-empirical BPDF models have been proposed. However, these models do not pay much attention to canopy structure, which is fundamental for generation of polarization. In this article, we propose a new BPDF model using canopy structure information, which is parameterized by visible-sunlit areas. It is evaluated over grassland using POLDER BPDF and MODIS leaf area index data sets. Experiments suggest that compared to Nadal–Bréon and Litvinov models, the new BPDF model reduces root-mean-square error by 7% and 10%, respectively. The new BPDF model also provides better performance when it is fitted using observations clustered by sun zenith angle. The new BPDF model thus provides an effective tool for the study of land surface polarization.
Classification of material and surface roughness using polarimetric multispectral LiDAR

Abstract:Multispectral LiDAR is an emerging active remote sensing technique that combines distance and spectroscopy measurements on light reflected from the surface at the respective measurement point. It is known that the reflectance spectrum can be used for material classification. However, the spectrum also depends on other surface parameters, particularly surface roughness. Herein, we propose an extension of multispectral to polarimetric multispectral LiDAR and introduce polarized and unpolarized reflectance spectra as additional features for classifying materials and roughness. We demonstrate the feasibility and the benefit using a bench-top prototype instrument which allows acquiring standard, polarized and unpolarized reflectance spectra, in addition to distance, in 33 spectral channels with 10 nm bandwidth between 580 and 900 nm. We analyze and interpret the raw spectra obtained from measurements on test specimens consisting of five different materials (PE, PVC, PP, sandstone, limestone) with two different levels of surface roughness. Using a linear support vector machine (SVM) we demonstrate the potential of the different features for independent material and roughness classification. The results indicate that the unpolarized reflectance spectrum increases the material classification accuracy by 50% as compared to a standard spectrum, and that the polarized spectrum actually allows classifying roughness. We interpret the results as a strong indication that multispectral polarimetric LiDAR enables deriving practically relevant additional information on surfaces with high spatial resolution through remote sensing.

Abstract:The target polarization characteristics reflect the important information about the medium material, surface texture, and structural characteristics of the target itself. In this paper, 9 kinds of samples with different materials, roughness, and surface texture direction are selected to measure the polarization characteristics in an outdoor environment, and the influencing factors of the target polarization characteristics are analyzed, where the influence of the surface texture direction on the spatial distribution of the target polarization characteristics is emphatically analyzed. The results show that the target polarization characteristics are affected by many factors such as material, roughness, surface texture direction, and detection position, and the greater the angle between the surface texture direction and the principal plane, the more concentrated the target polarization characteristics are in and around the principal plane, which could provide a theoretical basis for comprehensively mastering the target polarization characteristics, improving the ability of target polarization detection and recognition, and enhancing the confidence of the target polarization modeling and simulation.

Abstract:The time-dependent Mueller matrix solution of vector radiative transfer for inhomogeneous random media of non-spherical scatterers is presented. Co-polarized and cross-polarized bistatic scatterings for a polarized pulse incidence are numerically simulated. Numerical results well demonstrate volumetric and surface scattering mechanism and depict the inhomogeneous fraction profile of random scatterers. The peak tails in polarized echoes due to wave reflections from the underlying surface can be identified. Its co-polarized peaks in the specular direction are applied to simultaneous retrievals of the underlying surface roughness and moisture in the presence of inhomogeneous vegetation canopy.
