Abstract:Organic room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials exhibiting reversible changes in optical properties upon exposure to external stimuli have shown great potential in diverse optoelectronic fields. Particularly, dynamic manipulation of response behaviors for such materials is of fundamental significance, but it remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a series of RTP polymers were prepared by incorporating phosphorescent rotors into polymer backbone, and these materials show color-tunable persistent luminescence upon excitation at different wavelengths. Experimental results and theoretical calculations revealed that the various molecular conformations of monomers are responsible for the excitation wavelength-dependent (Ex-De) RTP behavior. Impressively, after gaining insights into the underlying mechanism, dynamic control of Ex-De RTP behavior was achieved through thermal energy driven molecular rotations of monomers. Eventually, we demonstrate the practical applications of these amorphous polymers in anti-counterfeiting areas. These findings open new opportunities for the control of response behaviors of smart-responsive RTP materials through external stimuli rather than conventional covalent modification method.

Abstract:Pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials can be used in optoelectronics, biochemical equipment, sensors and biological imaging. In the past few years, dynamic covalent chemistry has attracted significant attention because it provides a new way to produce intelligent optical materials with feedback functions. Two polymers are synthesized through supramolecular-mediated [4+4] photocyclodimerization of anthracene, which can be reversibly transformed by photoreversible dynamic covalent bonds. The polymers show decent phosphorescence emission with different colors at room temperature, achieving the conversion between blue phosphorescence and cyan phosphorescence. This study provides a novel method for designing and synthesizing pure organic RTP materials with tunable emissions through dynamic covalent bonds.

Abstract:AbstractPure organic materials with intrinsic room‐temperature phosphorescence typically rely on heavy atoms or heteroatoms. Two different strategies towards constructing organic room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) species based upon the through‐space charge transfer (TSCT) unit of [2.2]paracyclophane (PCP) were demonstrated. Materials with bromine atoms, PCP‐BrCz and PPCP‐BrCz, exhibit RTP lifetime of around 100 ms. Modulating the PCP core with non‐halogen‐containing electron‐withdrawing units, PCP‐TNTCz and PCP‐PyCNCz, successfully elongate the RTP lifetime to 313.59 and 528.00 ms, respectively, the afterglow of which is visible for several seconds under ambient conditions. The PCP‐TNTCz and PCP‐PyCNCz enantiomers display excellent circular polarized luminescence with dissymmetry factors as high as −1.2×10−2 in toluene solutions, and decent RTP lifetime of around 300 ms for PCP‐TNTCz enantiomers in crystalline state.

Abstract:AbstractPure organic room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials are useful for photoelectric, biochemical devices, and bioimaging sensors. In the last few years, dynamic covalent chemistry has aroused substantial attention as it offers a way to create intelligent materials with feedback and response functions. Through a Diels–Alder reaction, a [4+2] cycloaddition reaction between dienes and dienophiles, three polymers were synthesized that can be reversibly transformed by thermally reversible dynamic covalent bonds. All polymers show decent RTP emission with different colors. For the poly‐Br‐An solid, the absolute phosphorescence quantum yield reaches up to 12 %. This study provides a new method for the rational design and synthesis of tunable‐emission organic RTP materials via dynamic covalent bonds.
Persistent Room Temperature Phosphorescence from Pure Organic Luminogens Induced by the Dopant Chloroform: Insight from Theoretical Calculations

Abstract:Organic molecules with persistent room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have attracted growing attention due to the long lifetime and inefficiency light emission. By combining molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, crystal structure prediction and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) scheme, we explored the mechanism of persistent RTP in 4, 4'-bis (9H-carbazol-9-yl) methanone (CZ2BP) cocrystal with choroform (TCM), but no RTP in amorphous and crystalline phases. The computational results indicated that the local electrostatic interaction surrounding CZ2 BP induce an efficient intersystem crossing pathway from S1 to Tn and block the non-radiative decay channels of long-lived T1, thus resulting in persistent RTP. From amorphous, crystal to cocrystal, the increases of (π, π*) proportion in S1and (n, π*) proportion in T_ (2, 3) facility intersystem crossing from S1 to Tn according to El-Sayed rule, and the increase of (π, π*) component in T1 lengthens the lifetime of phosphorescence. Moreover, the radiative and non-radiative decay rates of T1 are reduced by one order of magnitude and four orders of magnitude, respectively, thus leading to strong long lifetime phosphorescence in cocrystal. The non-radiative decay channel is suppressed by high-frequency C= O stretching vibrations rather than low-frequency rotational vibrations. Additionally, the predicted phosphorescent spectrum agrees well with the experimental one. The proposed mechanism indicates that small polar molecules can act as a good assistant to realize persistent RTP of organic compounds.

Abstract:<p>Recently, a remarkable advance has been made for metal‐free room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) crystals with high phosphorescence quantum yield. However, amorphous, especially heavy‐atom‐free, RTP materials still suffer from low quantum yield due to the transition‐forbidden character of phosphorescence and the relatively poor suppression of nonradiative transition in amorphous materials. In this study, a series of single‐benzene structure‐based high intersystem crossing yield phosphor is obtained. After embedding into polyvinyl alcohol matrix, all these phosphor exhibits efficient phosphorescence emission (Ф<sub>P</sub>, up to 44.0%). Besides, photo‐switchable phosphorescence emission can be obtained by doping these molecules into a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix. The phosphorescence can be gradually switched on by consuming the residual oxygen in the PMMA matrix under continuous UV light irradiation. Furthermore, the phosphorescence will be spontaneously switched off under ambient conditions. Taking advantage of the photoactivation character, this material has potential in information storage and anti‐counterfeiting.</p>

Abstract:Two novel heavy atom-free pure organic pyrimidine-based asymmetric donor-acceptor type emitters were designed and synthesized. The twisted D-A conformation was favored to produce small ΔEst and effective ISC. Excitingly, PMBT and CzPMBT showed precious fluorescence-RTP-TADF triple emission. Furthermore, PMBT responded to external stimuli of volatile solvents fumigation and different intensity grinding to generate a multicolor switching system, which included charming white light due to the dual emission of fluorescence and phosphorescence. Crystallographic analysis was conducted to explain the reasons for the differences in photophysical properties produced by the two compounds. This research provides insight into the mechanism of action of RTP, TADF and multicolor MCL through intermolecular interactions and conformational modulation.

Abstract:Pure organic crystal of N,N-di-methyl-4-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)aniline (DMAB) exhibits efficient room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with an emission maximum at 387 nm and a high phosphorescence efficiency of 35.2%. Significantly, DMAB shows an exceptional photo-induced ultra-long RTP (URTP) at 539 nm, which displays an afterglow time of 14 s in air. The two phosphorescent bands are attributed to the monomeric and aggregated RTP of DMAB, respectively. Continuous UV irradiation for approximate to 1 min can dramatically improve the lifetimes for both of the monomeric and aggregated phosphorescent emissions. The photo-induced URTP can be spontaneously switched off after standing the crystal in air for 50 min, and this cyclic process has been repeated several times. The molecular packing based on multiple intermolecular noncovalent interactions is adopted in DMAB crystal, which is beneficial to RTP. Upon UV irradiation, the consumption of oxygen in the crystal matrix accounts for the distinctive photo-induced URTP. Taking advantage of the unique photo/oxygen-sensitive properties, DMAB crystals have been successfully utilized in oxygen sensing and anticounterfeiting.

Abstract:Persistent room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from pure organic luminogens can be rationally realized based on the crystallization-induced phosphorescence phenomenon and severe crystallization. A perfect crystal with dense molecular packing and effective intermolecular interactions isolates the triplet excitons from quenching sites and significantly blocks the high-energy vibrational dissipation, thus yielding long-lasting RTP.

Abstract:Conjugated organic crystals containing hetero-atom and halogen can usually undergo inter-system crossing (ISC) to populate triplet state and radiate room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) under photo-excitation, but those simultaneously emitting bright RTP under mechanical force stimulus are still rare. In the current work, N-(2-carbamoyl-3-bromophenyl)carbazole is synthesized starting from commercial and self-made 9H-carbazole, named C2J3X and L2J3X, respectively. We verify that C2J3X crystal shows the deserved RTP of isomer doping system by co-crystallization of C2J3X and L2J3X. More significantly, C2J3X crystal not only emits highly-efficient and long-lived RTP under photoexcitation but also shows touch-sensitive RTP emission upon mechanical force stimulus. The excellent RTP is due to the dual role of isomer doping and two-in-one introduction of polar group and heavy halogen, and the mechanoluminescence is attributed to crystal’s piezoelectric space group.

Abstract:Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have potential applications in anticounterfeiting, biochemistry, and optical recording. It is significant to develop a novel approach to enriching RTP materials. Here two new hybrid RTP solids were obtained by the introduction of organic 1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene and halogen atoms to simultaneously coordinate with inorganic moieties. Single-crystal X-ray analysis reveals that Br atoms are oriented toward the adjacent organic molecules that can play an important heavy-atom effect (HAE). Notably, such a HAE realized by orienting the Br atom to the location immediately adjacent to the triplets produced can efficiently facilitate intersystem crossing and results in RTP with intensity similar to that of the fluorescence in steady-state photoluminescence.

Abstract:Ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of organic materials is extremely attractive for its tremendous potential use. However, the design of organic materials with ultralong and efficient RTP is very challenging due to the lack of general design principles. A new design principle for organic materials with ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence based on π-π-dominated supramolecular aggregates in crystal is proposed, and strong intermolecular electronic coupling with specific molecular alignment is identified to be responsible for supramolecular behavior in persistent emission. Small substituents in molecular structure favor the formation of supramolecular aggregates in the crystal, thus facilitating the generation of ultralong RTP under ambient conditions. Our results also reveal that the introduction of heavy atoms into supramolecular aggregates as a general rule can be used to achieve efficient persistent phosphorescence.

Abstract:Persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (p-RTP) of pure organic materials is attracting increasing attention. The design of efficient phosphors and understanding the origin of p-RTP, however, remain challenging. Herein, to gain further insights into pure organic p-RTP, we prepared a group of carbazole (CZ) and methyl benzoate (MBA) conjugates with a methyl ester unit at the para (4-MBACZ), meta (3-MBACZ), and ortho (2-MBACZ) sites. These isomers merely produce prompt fluorescence in solutions, but generate blue prompt/delayed fluorescence (DF) and orange p-RTP with lifetimes up to 865.2ms in the crystalline state. Lifetimes of p-RTP are in the order of 2-MBACZ>3-MBACZ>4-MBACZ, which might be mainly ascribed to the combined effect of packing density, intermolecular interactions and steric hindrance. Meanwhile, upon mechanical grinding, while the emission color and profile of the luminogens do not significantly change, no (4-MBACZ) or shortened (3-MBACZ, 2-MBACZ) p-RTP is observed, accompanying the change from crystalline to amorphous states. Such p-RTP at amorphous states without external hosts is rarely reported, which demonstrates important implications for the molecular design and mechanism understanding towards p-RTP. Furthermore, their p-RTP attribute and different emission colors before and after ceasing the UV irradiation endow them promising applications in encryption and anticounterfeiting fields.

Abstract:Research on materials with pure organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and their application as organic single-molecule white light emitters is a hot area and relies on the design of highly efficient pure organic RTP luminogens. Herein, a facile strategy of heavy-atom-participated anion-π+ interactions is proposed to construct RTP-active organic salt compounds (1,2,3,4-tetraphenyloxazoliums with different counterions). Those compounds with heavy-atom counterions (bromide and iodide ions) exhibit outstanding RTP due to the external heavy atom effect via anion-π+ interactions, evidently supported by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and theoretical calculation. Their single-molecule white light emission is realized by tuning the degree of crystallization. Such white light emission also performs well in polymer matrices and their use in 3D printing is demonstrated by white light lampshades.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers with different functionalities have been continuously developed in the past decade because of their indispensable role in soft materials. However, pure organic supramolecular polymers with stable room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission were very rarely reported for the difficulties of synthesis and achieving RTP in solution. Herein, soluble helical supramolecular polymers with circularly polarized room-temperature phosphorescence were developed via a facile host-guest strategy. Through assembly, a transition from pure fluorescence to almost pure RTP emission was achieved. Adjusting the asymmetry of guest could easily control the chiroptical property of supramolecular polymers. This work provides new opportunities for the design and development of intelligent soft functional soft materials.

Abstract:Abstract The development of smart-responsive materials, in particular those with non-invasive, rapid responsive phosphorescence, is highly desirable but has rarely been described. Herein, we designed and prepared a series of molecular rotors containing a triazine core and three bromobiphenyl units: o -Br-TRZ, m -Br-TRZ, and p -Br-TRZ. The bromine and triazine moieties serve as room temperature phosphorescence-active units, and the bromobiphenyl units serve as rotors to drive intramolecular rotation. When irradiated with strong ultraviolet photoirradiation, intramolecular rotations of o -Br-TRZ, m -Br-TRZ, and p -Br-TRZ increase, successively resulting in a photothermal effect via molecular motions. Impressively, the photothermal temperature attained by p -Br-TRZ is as high as 102 °C, and synchronously triggers its phosphorescence due to the ordered molecular arrangement after molecular motion. The thermal effect is expected to be important for triggering efficient phosphorescence, and the photon input for providing a precise and non-invasive stimulus. Such sequential photo-thermo-phosphorescence conversion is anticipated to unlock a new stimulus-responsive phosphorescence material without chemicals invasion.

Designing Efficient and Ultralong Pure Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Materials by Structural Isomerism

Abstract:Pure organic materials with ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are attractive alternatives to inorganic phosphors. However, they generally show inefficient intersystem crossing (ISC) owing to weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC). A design principle based on the realization of small energy gap between the lowest singlet and triplet states (Delta E-ST) and pure pi pi* configuration of the lowest triplet state (T-1) via structural isomerism was used to obtain efficient and ultralong RTP materials. The meta isomer of carbazole-substituted methyl benzoate exhibits an ultralong lifetime of 795.0 ms with a quantum yield of 2.1%. Study of the structure-property relationship shows that the varied steric and conjugation effects imposed by ester substituent at different positions are responsible for the small Delta E-ST and pure pi pi* configuration of T-1.

Abstract:Three regioisomers with a resonance linkage of N─S═O are obtained by directly covalently bonding the nitrogen atom of carbazole and the sulfur atom of the sulfonylbenzene group. Their room temperature phosphorescen emission colors in the crystal are precisely tailored through the integration of isomerization and resonance variation control. Manipulating and optimizing the room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) behavior of organic luminophores is highly desirable for exploring their extensive potential applications. However, achieving tailored and precise control over RTP emission colors remains a challenging task. Herein, three regioisomers, namely o‐Br, m‐Br, and p‐Br, are developed by directly bonding the nitrogen atom of commercial carbazole and the sulfur atom of the sulfonylbenzene group. This design not only features the bromine substitution at different positions but also leads to the formation of N─S═O resonance linkages. With the variation in position of bromine from ortho to para, the RTP color changes from yellow to red. Experimental investigations and theoretical calculations demonstrate that this color variation arises from the modulation of contributions from different canonical forms of N─S═O, which can be attributed to the regioisomerization of bromine atoms for fine‐tuning intra‐ and intermolecular interactions. Additionally, the in vitro cell imaging is successfully realized by employing red RTP nanoparticles prepared from the p‐Br luminophore. This study reveals a simple and effective approach for customizing RTP emission colors through the integration of isomerization and resonance variation control.
