Abstract:In this study, atomic layer deposition (ALD) was used to deposit nanostructured palladium on porous carbon as the cathode material for Li-O-2 cells. Scanning transmission electron microscopy showed discrete crystalline nanoparticles decorating the surface of the porous carbon support, where the size could be controlled in the range of 2-8 nm and depended on the number of Pd ALD cycles performed. X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Pd K-edge revealed that the carbon supported Pd existed in a mixed phase of metallic palladium and palladium oxide. The conformality of ALD allowed us to uniformly disperse the Pd catalyst onto the carbon support while preserving the initial porous structure. As a result, the charging and discharging performance of the oxygen cathode in a Li-O-2 cell was improved. Our results suggest that ALD is a promising technique for tailoring the surface composition and structure of nanoporous supports in energy storage devices.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial processes for energy conversion/storage systems, such as fuel cells, metal–air batteries, and water splitting. However, both reactions are severely restricted by their sluggish kinetics, thus requiring highly active, cost-effective, and durable electrocatalysts. Herein, we develop novel bifunctional nanocatalysts through surface nanoengineering of dealloying-driven nanoporous gold (NPG). Pd overlayers were precisely deposited onto the NPG ligament surface by epitaxial layer-by-layer growth. More importantly, the obtained NPG-Pd overlayer nanocatalysts exhibit remarkably enhanced electrocatalytic activities toward both the ORR and OER in alkaline media, benchmarked against a stateof- the-art Pt/C catalyst. The improved electrocatalytic performance is rationalized by the unique three-dimensional nanoarchitecture of NPG, enhanced Pd utilization efficiency from precise control of the Pd overlayers, and change in electronic structure, as revealed by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:Uniformly dispersed Pd nanoparticles on ZnO-passivated porous carbon were synthesized via an atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique, which was tested as a cathode material in a rechargeable Li-O-2 battery, showing a highly active catalytic effect toward the electrochemical reactions-in particular, the oxygen evolution reaction. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed discrete crystalline nanoparticles decorating the surface of the ZnO-passivated porous carbon support in which the size could be controlled in the range of 3-6 nm, depending on the number of Pd ALD cycles performed. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Pd Kedge revealed that the carbon-supported Pd existed in a mixed phase of metallic palladium and palladium oxide. The ZnO-passivated layer effectively blocks the defect sites on the carbon surface, minimizing the electrolyte decomposition. Our results suggest that ALD is a promising technique for tailoring the surface composition and structure of nanoporous supports for Li-O-2 batteries.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt)-based multi-metallic nanostructures show great promise as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cell cathodes. Herein, we report a simple, one-step surfactant-directed synthetic strategy to directly synthesize tri-metallic PtPdNi mesoporous nanospheres (PtPdNi MNs) in a high yield. The synthesis could be accomplished in aqueous solution at mild reaction temperature (40 degrees C) without needing any organic solvent, yielding well-dispersed PtPdNi MNs with uniform shape and narrow size distribution. Benefitting from their unique mesoporous and highly open structure and tri-metallic composition, the as-synthesized PtPdNi MNs demonstrate superior catalytic activity and stability for ORR in acidic solution in comparison with PtPdNi nanodendrites (PtPdNi NDs), PtPd MNs and commercial Pt/C catalyst. Abstract:Uniformly dispersed core-shelled Fe/Fe3O4 nanocomposite on porous carbon was synthesized via a wet-chemistry approach, which was tested as a cathode material in rechargeable Li-O-2 battery, showing highly active catalytic effect towards the electrochemical reactions, of particular, oxygen reduction reaction. XPS data showed the oxygen reduction reaction took place on the surface of the catalyst during discharge of the cell. Both XRD and XPS data demonstrated that lithium peroxide partook in the reversible reactions in the Li-O-2 cell with a TEGDME-based electrolyte.

Abstract:Certain bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs) possess promising catalytic properties for electrochemical energy conversion. Herein, we report a facile method for the one-step synthesis of porous dendritic PtNi NCs in aqueous solution at room temperature that contrasts with the traditional multistep thermal decomposition approach. The dendritic PtNi NCs assembled by interconnected arms are efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. This direct and efficient method is favorable for the up-scaled synthesis of active catalysts used in electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Stable and high-efficiency bifunctional catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are desired for the practical application of Li-O2 batteries with excellent rate performance and cycle stability. Herein, a novel hybrid bifunctional catalyst with carbon nanofibers inlaid with hollow Co3O4 nanoparticles and separate active sites for ORR and OER were prepared and applied in Li-O2 batteries. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of unique porous structural features and high electrocatalytic activity of hollow Co3O4 intimately bound to N-doped carbon nanofibers, the assembled Li-O2 batteries with novel catalyst exhibited high specific capacity, excellent rate capability, and cycle stability up to 150 cycles under a capacity limitation of 500 mAh g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1. The facile synthesis and preliminary results in this work show the as-prepared catalyst as a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst for applications in metal-air batteries, fuel cells, and electrocatalysis.

Abstract:The rational design and synthetic route to fabricate hybrid materials with desirable electrocatalytic functionalities remain critical but still challenging for sustainable energy devices. Here, we constructed a tungsten trioxide nano-lamellae chemically anchored with pyridinic-N-dominated doped CNT/graphene frameworks (W-NCG) via a general solution-based synthesis method. The detailed results indicated that this hybrid structure is composed of vacancy-defect abundant WO3 porous nanoflakes anchoring through or onto a 3D N-doped carbon matrix. After a facile post-annealing treatment, the W-NCG sample is utilized as a bi-functional catalyst for rechargeable lithium-oxygen batteries. The optimized sample with a large BET surface exhibits unprecedented ORR/OER activity in the cell, and satisfying specific capacity (approximate to 7850 mA h g(-1)) and cycling stability. This excellent electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the pseudo 3D structure with sufficient microspace and good electrical conductivity, which facilitate the high dispersion of active components and effectivly relieve the formation of large/irreversible Li2O2. As such, this porous W-NCG framework is a prospective high-performance cathode material for Li-O-2 batteries.

Abstract:A high charge overpotential and poor cycle stability are the limiting factors in lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries, causing poor round-trip efficiency and cell failure. Many types of electrocatalysts have been explored to facilitate the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, even with the application of catalysts, it is still difficult to achieve stable operation as the carbon electrode (especially the defects) easily undergoes side reactions. To achieve high stability and round-trip efficiency, the rational design of OER catalysts and stable carbon electrodes are required. Herein, we employ a wet impregnation chemistry method to form a thin layer of palladium nanoparticles on the surface of carbon, which largely suppresses the side reaction through a selective coating on the carbon defect sites. Simultaneously, the Pd films serve as an electrocatalyst enabling the OER reaction with a very low overpotential. This rational design improves overall cell efficiency and extends the cycle life of the lithium-oxygen battery.

Abstract:The development of cathode catalysts with a porous structure is essential to design Li-O-2 batteries with a high rate performance and good cycle stability. Herein, spinel-type porous cobalt-manganese oxide (Co-Mn-O) nanocubes derived from metal organic frameworks were employed as an electrocatalyst in a Li-O-2 battery. The battery with the porous Co-Mn-O nanocubes electrode showed a low overpotential and enhanced capacity. The synergistic effects of large specific surface area, porous structure, and the high electrocatalytic activity of the porous Co-Mn-O nanocubes electrode endowed the Li-O-2 battery with a good rate performance and excellent cycle stability up to 100 cycles.

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have always restricted the development of lithium oxygen batteries (LOBs). Herein, hollow carbon spheres loaded with Pd/Pd4S heterostructure (Pd/Pd4S@HCS) were successfully prepared via the in-situ deposition to improve the electrocatalytic activities for both ORR and OER in LOBs. With the well-dispersed Pd/Pd4S nanoparticles, the hierarchical composite with large specific surface area offers favorable transport channels for ions, electron and oxygen. Especially, the Pd/Pd4S nanoparticles could exhibit excellent electrochemical performance for ORR and OER due to their intrinsic catalytic property and interfacial effect from the heterostructure. Therefore, the LOBs with Pd/Pd4S@HCS as cathode catalyst show improved specific capacities, good rate ability and stable cycling performance.

Abstract:Lithium-O-2 cells can be considered the "holy grail" of lithium batteries because they offer much superior theoretical energy density to conventional lithium-ion systems. In this study, porous carbon-supported MnO2 nanorods synthesized at room temperature were explored as an electrocatalyst for rechargeable Li-O-2 cells. Both high-energy X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption fine-structure analyses showed that the prepared MnO2 exhibited a tetragonal crystal structure (alpha-MnO2), which has proved to be one of the most efficient catalysts to facilitate the charging of the Li-O-2 cell. Under the current synthetic approach, alpha-MnO2 was uniformly distributed onto the surface of a carbon support, without disrupting the porous structure at the surface of the carbon cathode. As a result, the as-prepared catalysts demonstrated good electrochemical behavior, with a capacity of similar to 1400 mA h g(-1) (carbon + electrocatalyst) under a current density of 100 mA g(-1) (carbon + electrocatalyst) during the initial discharge. The charge potential was significantly reduced, to 3.5-3.7 V, compared with most of the reported data, which are above 4.0 V. The mechanism of the capacity fade with cycling was also investigated by analyzing the cathode at different states of discharge-charge by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract:Palladium (Pd) is regarded as a potential non-platinum electrocatalyst to drive oxygen reduction in fuel cells. The development of Pd-based electrocatalysts with high performances through structural engineering is still highly desirable. Herein, a facile one-pot synthesis strategy with the assistance of dual surface protecting agents was developed to fabricate carbon-supported Pd (Pd/C) nanodendrites with high mesoporosity. The mesoporous spherical Pd/C nanodendrites are built with connected nanoparticles with a small size of several nanometers and coated by simultaneously formed carbon layers. The used dual protecting agents, glycine and oleylamine, exhibit synergistic effects to engineer Pd growth to form the unique mesoporous dendritic structure. Benefiting from the mesoporous feature, small size, defect-rich surface and carbon coating, the obtained mesoporous Pd/C nanodendrites exhibit great electrocatalytic performance toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).

Synthesis of dual-metal single atom in porous carbon with efficient oxygen reduction reaction in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes

Abstract:The rational design and fabrication of platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via economically feasible approach is essential for reducing the cost of fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Catalysts must have very high activity, and excellent mass diffusion of reactants. Herein, we display a high-performing dual-metal single atom catalyst (DM-SAC) composed of Fe and Ni SA active sites immobilized in porous carbon nanospheres (Fe/Ni-N-PCS), prepared via defects/vacancies anchoring strategy. The abundant and accessible edge-hosted Fe and Ni SA active sites can promote the adsorption/desorption behavior for ORR intermediates attributing to possible synergistic effects between dual-metal SA active sites. Thus, the as-developed Fe/Ni-N-PCS DM-SAC exhibits impressive ORR electrocatalytic performance in both alkaline (Eonset = 1.04 V, E1/2 = 0.9 V) and acid solutions (Eonset = 0.87 V, E1/2 = 0.71 V), and high stability, outperforming SACs with solo Fe-Nx or Ni-Nx active sites, and benchmark PGM. Fe/Ni-N-PCS also exhibits superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with low overpotential and long-term stability. Zn-air battery with Fe/Ni-N-PCS cathode yields encouraging performance, including working potential, peak power density, and the stability of charge and discharge cycles. Our synthesis method may promote the fabrication of other DM-SAC and the great promise in practical applications.
Ordered Two-Dimensional Porous Co3O4 Nanosheets As Electrocatalysts for Rechargeable Li-O2 Batteries

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen batteries have attracted considerable interest in the past a few years, because they have higher theoretical specific energy than Li-ion batteries. However, the available energy densities of the Li-O-2 batteries are much less than expected. It is particularly urgent to find catalyst with high activity. Herein, a series of Co3O4 with different morphologies (ordered two-dimensional porous nanosheets, flowerlike and cuboidlike) were successfully prepared through facile hydrothermal and calcination methods. Ordered two-dimensional Co3O4 nanosheets show the best cycling stability. Detailed experimental results reveal that the superiority of the unique two-dimensional uniform porous structures is vital for Li-O-2 batteries cathode catalysts. Due to the ordered structures with high surface areas and active sites, the catalysts indicate a high specific discharge capacity of about 10,417 mAh/g at a current density of 200 mA/g, and steadily cycle for more than 50 times with a limited capacity of 1,000 mAh/g.

Abstract:Despite the ultrahigh energy density of rechargeable lithium oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries, their practical use is still hindered by the poor performance of electrocatalysts. Recently, porous and hollow nanostructured catalysts have been found to be promising electrocatalysts toward the ORR/OER to improve the performance of Li-O-2 batteries. However, the catalytic activities of the catalysts are still insufficient and the nanopores are easily clogged by the insoluble discharge products. Herein, highly porous and hollow TiO2-x nanoboxes (TiO2-x NBs) with large surface areas, increased oxygen vacancies, and high grain boundary density have been developed as an electrocatalyst for Li-O-2 batteries via a cation-assisted synthetic approach. The Li-O-2 batteries with TiO2-x NBs as the electrocatalyst exhibit a high specific capacity of 8569 mA h g(-1), excellent rate capability, and long cycle life up to 200 cycles when the capacity is limited to 1000 mA h g(-1). Moreover, this cation-assisted approach for fine-tuning the nanostructure could be an innovative strategy to design efficient electrocatalysts for high-performance Li-O-2 batteries.
