Abstract:Salt transport in bulk electrolytes is limited by diffusion and convection, but in microstructures with charged surfaces (e.g. microfluidic devices, porous media, soils, or biological tissues) surface conduction and electro-osmotic flow also contribute to ionic fluxes. For small applied voltages, these effects lead to well known linear electrokinetic phenomena. In this paper, we predict some surprising nonlinear dynamics that can result from the competition between bulk and interfacial transport at higher voltages. When counter-ions are selectively removed by a membrane or electrode, a "desalination shock" can propagate through the microstructure, leaving in its wake an ultrapure solution, nearly devoid of co-ions and colloidal impurities. We elucidate the basic physics of desalination shocks and develop a mathematical theory of their existence, structure, and stability, allowing for slow variations in surface charge or channel geometry. Via asymptotic approximations and similarity solutions, we show that desalination shocks accelerate and sharpen in narrowing channels, while they decelerate and weaken, and sometimes disappear, in widening channels. These phenomena may find applications in separations (desalination, decontamination, biological assays) and energy storage (batteries, supercapacitors) involving electrolytes in microstructures.

Abstract:Most electrochemical processes, such as electrodialysis, are limited by diffusion, but in porous media, surface conduction and electro-osmotic flow also contribute to ionic fluxes. In this paper, we report experimental evidence for surface-driven over-limiting current (faster than diffusion) and deionization shocks (propagating salt removal) in a porous medium. The apparatus consists of a silica glass frit (1 mm thick with 500 nm mean pore size) in an aqueous electrolyte (CuSO$_4$ or AgNO$_3$) passing ionic current from a reservoir to a cation-selective membrane (Nafion). The current-voltage relation of the whole system is consistent with a proposed theory based on the electro-osmotic flow mechanism over a broad range of reservoir salt concentrations (0.1 mM - 1.0 M), after accounting for (Cu) electrode polarization and pH-regulated silica charge. Above the limiting current, deionized water ($\approx 10 \mu$ $M$) can be continuously extracted from the frit, which implies the existence of a stable shock propagating against the flow, bordering a depleted region that extends more than 0.5mm across the outlet. The results suggest the feasibility of "shock electrodialysis" as a new approach to water desalination and other electrochemical separations.

Abstract:Shock electrodialysis is a recently developed electrochemical water treatment method which shows promise for water deionization and ionic separations. Although simple models and scaling laws have been proposed, a predictive theory has not yet emerged to fit experimental data and enable system design. Here, we extend and analyze existing "leaky membrane" models for the canonical case of a steady shock in crossow, as in recent experimental prototypes. Two‐dimensional numerical solutions are compared with analytical boundary‐layer approximations and experimental data. The boundary‐layer theory accurately reproduces the simulation results for desalination, and both models predict the data collapse of the desalination factor with dimensionless current, scaled to the incoming convective ux of cations. The numerical simulation also predicts the water recovery increase with current. Nevertheless, neither approach can quantitatively fit the transition from normal to over‐limiting current, which suggests gaps in our understanding of extreme electrokinetic phenomena in porous media.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:In a circular channel passing over-limiting current (faster than diffusion), transient vortices of bulk electroconvection are observed in salt-depleted region within the horizontal plane. The spatiotemporal evolution of the salt concentration is directly visualized, revealing the propagation of a deionization shock wave driven by bulk electroconvection up to millimeter scales. This novel mechanism leads to quantitatively similar dynamics as for deionization shocks in charged porous media, which are driven instead by surface conduction and electro-osmotic flow at micron to nanometer scales. The remarkable generality of deionization shocks under over-limiting current could be used to manipulate ion transport in complex geometries for desalination and water treatment.

Abstract:We revisit the classical problem of diffusion-limited ion transport to a membrane (or electrode) by considering the effects of charged sidewalls. Using simple mathematical models and numerical simulations, we identify three basic mechanisms for overlimiting current in a microchannel: (i) surface conduction carried by excess counterions, which dominates for very thin channels, (ii) convection by electro-osmotic flow on the sidewalls, which dominates for thicker channels, and (iii) transitions to electro-osmotic instability on the membrane end in very thick channels. These intriguing electrokinetic phenomena may find applications in biological separations, water desalination, and electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:The precise and efficient control of ion transport in an electrochemical system is essential for desalination, water treatment, and energy conversion and storage. With the recent progress of electroconvection in microstructures and shock electrodialysis in porous media, here, we review the emergence of intriguing physical phenomena related to electroconvection and shocks for complex geometries in theory and experiments. In a circular channel, equilibrium electroconvection instability of concentration enrichment, rather than instabilities of concentration depletion, is realized in an aqueous electrolyte. Additionally, the propagation of a deionization shock wave is driven by electroconvection up to millimeter scales, offering more opportunities for desalination. Conformal mapping is employed to explore the effect of symmetry broken in more complex geometries, including an eccentric annulus, a concentric ellipse, and a corner geometry. Lastly, in a multi-component electrolyte, a remote electroconvection is formed, while the concentration valley of inert cations occurs.

Abstract:Possible mechanisms of overlimiting current in unsupported electrolytes, exceeding diffusion limitation, have been intensely studied for their fundamental significance and applications to desalination, separations, sensing, and energy storage. In bulk membrane systems, the primary physical mechanism is electro-convection, driven by electro-osmotic instability on the membrane surface. It has recently been predicted that confinement by charged surfaces in microchannels or porous media favors two new mechanisms, electro-osmotic flow (EOF) and surface conduction (SC), driven by large electric fields in the depleted region acting on the electric double layers on the sidewalls. Here, we provide the first direct evidence for the transition from SC to EOF above a critical channel height, using in situ particle tracking and current-voltage measurements in a micro/nanofluidic device. The dependence of the over-limiting conductance on channel depth (d) is consistent with theoretical predictions, scaling as d^-1 for SC and d^4/5 for EOF with a transition around d=8um. This complete picture of surface-driven over-limiting current can guide engineering applications of ion concentration polarization phenomena in microfluidics and porous media.

Abstract:The problem of water shortage needs to be solved urgently. The membrane-embedded microchannel structure based on the ion concentration polarization (ICP) desalination effect is a potential portable desalination device with low energy consumption and high efficiency. The electroosmotic flow in the microchannel of the cation exchange membrane and the desalination effect of the system are numerically analyzed. The results show that when the horizontal electric field intensity is 2 kV/m and the transmembrane voltage is 400 mV, the desalting efficiency reaches 97.3%. When the electric field strength increases to 20 kV/m, the desalination efficiency is reduced by 2%. In terms of fluid motion, under the action of the transmembrane voltage, two reverse eddy currents are formed on the surface of the membrane due to the opposite electric field and pressure difference on both sides of the membrane, forming a pumping effect. The electromotive force in the channel exhibits significant pressure-flow characteristics with a slip boundary at a speed approximately six times that of a non-membrane microchannel.

Abstract:Understanding over-limiting current (faster than diffusion) is a long-standing challenge in electrochemistry with applications in desalination and energy storage. Known mechanisms involve either chemical or hydrodynamic instabilities in unconfined electrolytes. Here, it is shown that over-limiting current can be sustained by surface conduction in nano pores, without any such instabilities, and used to control dendritic growth during electrodeposition. Copper electrode posits are grown in anodized aluminum oxide membranes with polyelectrolyte coatings to modify the surface charge. At low currents, uniform electroplating occurs, unaffected by surface modification due to thin electric double layers, but the morphology changes dramatically above the limiting current. With negative surface charge, growth is enhanced along the nanopore surfaces, forming surface dendrites and nanotubes behind a deionization shock. With positive surface charge, dendrites avoid the surfaces and are either guided along the nanopore centers or blocked from penetrating the membrane.
Small-scale desalination of seawater by shock electrodialysis

Abstract:Conventional desalination technologies such as distillation and reverse osmosis are well suited for the supply of fresh water at large scale. The expensive infrastructure and high capital, operating, and maintenance costs associated with these technologies, however, limit their application in remote or underdeveloped areas. Here, we show that shock electrodialysis, a recently developed electrokinetic process, can be used to continuously desalinate artificial seawater (3.5 wt. %) for small-scale (≤ 25 m3 day−1 as a long-term goal), decentralized applications. In two steps, 99.8% of the salt fed was rejected, with selectivity for magnesium ions of which > 99.99% were removed (based on measurements of concentration by mass spectrometry). We also demonstrated for the first time the viability of using and continuously recycling solutions of sodium citrate buffer to simultaneously reduce waste and inhibit precipitation reactions in the electrode streams. As with conventional electrodialysis, the energy consumed by our technology can be significantly reduced by desalinating sources that are less saline than seawater, such as brackish water and various industrial or municipal process streams. Since the design of the system and choice of materials have yet to be optimized, there remain ample opportunities to further reduce the cost of desalination by shock electrodialysis.

Abstract:Shock electrodialysis (shock ED), an emerging electrokinetic process for water purification, leverages the new physics of deionization shock waves in porous media. In previous work, a simple leaky membrane model with surface conduction can explain the propagation of deionization shocks in a shock ED system, but it cannot quantitatively predict the deionization and conductance (which determines the energy consumption), and it cannot explain the selective removal of ions in experiments. This two-part series of work establishes a more comprehensive model for shock ED, which applies to multicomponent electrolytes and any electrical double layer thickness, captures the phenomena of electroosmosis, diffusioosmosis, and water dissociation, and incorporates more realistic boundary conditions. In this paper, we will present the model details and show that hydronium transport and electroosmotic vortices (at the inlet and outlet) play important roles in determining the deionization and conductance in shock ED. We also find that the results are quantitatively consistent with experimental data in the literature. Finally, the model is used to investigate design strategies for scale up and optimization.

Abstract:Overlimiting current (OLC) through electrolytes interfaced with perm-selective membranes has been extensively researched in recent years for understanding the fundamental mechanisms of transport and developing efficient applications from electrochemistry to sample analysis and separation. Predominant mechanisms responsible for OLC include surface conduction, convection by electro-osmotic flow, and electro-osmotic instability depending on input parameters such as surface charge and geometric constrictions. This work studies how a network of microchannels in a non-uniform array, which mimicks a natural pore configuration, can contribute to OLC. To this end, micro/nanofluidic devices are fabricated with arrays of parallel microchannels with non-uniform size distributions. All cases maintain the same surface and bulk conduction to allow probing the sensitivity only by the non-uniformity of the channels. Both experimental and theoretical current-voltage relations demonstrate that OLCs increase with increasing non-uniformity. Furthermore, the visualization of internal recirculating flows indicates that the non-uniform arrays induce flow loops across the network enhancing advective transport. These evidences confirm a new driving mechanism of OLC, inspired by natural micro/nanoporous materials with random geometric structure. Therefore, this result can advance not only the fundamental understanding of nanoelectrokinetics but also the design rule of engineering applications of electrochemical membrane.

Abstract:Desalination of seawater is one of the potential solutions to the freshwater shortage nowadays. Large. scale infrastructures and high cost are required in present desalination technologies, which hinder the widely used desalted seawater. Developing new desalination techniques could be of substantial benefit. In this study, poly (dimethylsiloxane) based microfluidic chips were developed to desalt the salt water by ion concentration polarization (ICP). Effects of the bias voltages, the flow rates of salt water, the dimensions of the micro channels and the lengths of the nano channels filled with Nafion polymer were investigated to improve the desalination efficiency. An optimized structure was obtained where the depth. to. width ratio of the micro channel was 1:20 and the length of the nano channel was 450 mu m. When a bias voltage of 25 V and a flow rate of 4 mu L/min of the salt water were applied, a champion desalination efficiency of 99% was reached. The study has important guiding significance for development of energy. efficient desalination devices in the near future.

Abstract:Overlimiting ionic transfer is considered a mechanism to intensify transport processes in electrodialysis, potentially providing a smaller required footprint of electromembrane units. However, its applicability in desalination is still questionable. To address this aspect of electrodialysis, we characterized desalination in a single-channel electrodialysis unit operated under various current densities, yielding various diluate desalination degrees. Our analysis revealed that the conditions providing <100 % desalination were pertinent to an underlimiting regime with no indication of overlimiting processes. Specifically, no (electro-) convective structures intensifying ionic transfer occurred in the channel under these conditions. Applying electric current densities yielding theoretical desalination larger than 100 % significantly increased the necessary voltage, driving electroconvective vortices. The observation suggested that overlimiting phenomena occur upon setting conditions corresponding to complete desalination and, thus, do not positively contribute to desalination. Notably, the partial loss of membrane ion selectivity was associated with an operation in the overlimiting regime, worsening desalination efficiency. Our results imply that the overlimiting regime is, at least with the tested membranes, unsuitable for enhancing ionic transfer. Conversely, the small voltage required to remove ions in the underlimiting regime was attributed to the effect of natural convection, which readily occurs in the model system.

Optimization of Membrane Stack Configuration in Enlarged Microbial Desalination Cells for Efficient Water Desalination

Abstract:Microbial desalination cells are considered a low-energy-consumption, clean technology to simultaneously purify wastewater and desalinate saline water by utilizing the in situ energy source contained in wastewater. To enhance desalination performance and achieve an optimal membrane stack configuration, an enlarged stacked microbial desalination cell (SMDC) has been developed and tested with 6-14 desalination cells. The cross-membrane area of the enlarged SMDC is 100 cm(2). The anode and cathode volumes are both 200 mL. To reduce internal resistance, the width of desalination cells is kept as <0.5 mm. The optimal configuration with 10 desalination cells achieves the highest total desalination rate (TDR) of 423 mg/h and the highest charge transfer efficiency (CTE) of 836% when treating the 20 g/L NaCI solution. During this process, the junction potential across membranes increases from 0 to 374 mV, and occupies up to 74% of the total potential loss inside the SMDC. This shows that the SMDC used in this work achieves the highest TDR and CTE among the reported studies, and the junction potential should be effectively controlled to achieve the desired desalination performance in future practical applications. Systematic Investigation of Microbial Desalination Cells (MDC) Performance under the Impact of Cation Migration Behavior and Multi-cation Interactions in Industrial Wastewater

Abstract:Microbial desalination cells (MDCs) provide a sustainable approach to desalinate saltwater powered by bacterial metabolism during organic oxidation. A systematic study was conducted to clarify the ion-dominated interactions for preventing unpredictable risks for long-term MDC operations in the treatment of complex ion -containing wastewaters. The investigation showed that the migra-tion and unequal scaling of cations at different ion exchange membrane (IEM) surfaces greatly influenced their transmembrane processes, which were directly affected by the hydrolysis and precipitation behavior controlled by the solubility product and ambient solution, resulting in the following removal efficiency of MDCs: Na+ > Ca2+ > Cu2+> Al3+> Fe3+. A further study showed that the precipitation antagonism and pH buffer effect of multiple cations could positively promote the desalination of sparingly soluble cations. Eventually, the desalination efficiency of MDC in the treatment of actual industrial tailwater was maintained at 63.2- 74.1 %. These findings not only elucidated the kinetics of ion migration in detail but also offered new application possibilities for MDCs.
Ionophobicity of carbon sub-nanometer pores enables efficient desalination at high salinity

Abstract:Electrochemical seawater desalination has drawn significant atten-tion as an energy-efficient technique to address the global issue of water remediation. Microporous carbons, that is, carbons with pore sizes smaller than 2 nm, are commonly used for capacitive deionization. However, micropores are ineffective for capacitive deionization at high molar strength because of their inability to permselectively uptake ions. In our work, we combine experimental work with molecular dynamics simulation and reveal the ability of sub-nanometer pores (ultramicropores) to effectively desalinate aqueous media at seawater-like molar strength. This is done without any ion-exchange membrane. The desalination capacity in 600 mM reaches 12 mg/g, with a charge efficiency of 94% and high cycling stability over 200 cycles (97% of charge efficiency retention). Using molecular dynamic simulations and providing experimental data, our work makes it possible both to understand and to calculate desalination capacity and charge efficiency at high molar strength as a function of pore size.

Abstract:Microbial desalination cell (MDC) offers a new and sustainable approach to desalinate saltwater by directly utilizing the electrical power generated by bacteria during organic matter oxidation. The successful MDC development relies on the fundamental understanding of the interactions and removal mechanisms of different ion species present in saline water or wastewater, but there is limited understanding of ion transport mechanisms in MDCs and potential membrane fouling/scaling during treatment of wastewater and saline water. In this study, we investigated the transport behavior of multiple ions in MDCs and the effects of ionic composition on system performance and membrane scaling and fouling. The results showed that the presence of sparingly soluble cations in saltwater negatively affected MDC power generation and desalination. Membrane characterization revealed that the majority of such ions precipitated on the ion exchange membrane surface and caused membrane scaling. Anions such as Br− and SO42− with Na+ as counter-ion did not show significant effects on system performance. Sharp pH changes were observed during MDC operation, which resulted in the inhibited MDC anode microbial activity and the accelerated formation of alkaline precipitations on both sides of the cation exchange membrane. An anode–cathode recirculation approach was proved to be effective to solve such problems and improved the desalination rate by 152% and the electron harvest rate by 98%.
