Abstract:The fundamental principle of molecular electronics is to comprehend electrical properties of single molecules connected between two probe electrodes. In recent years, substantial advances in this field have been made to underpin experimental and theoretical understanding of single molecule electrochemistry. By using scanning tunneling microscope (STM) break-junction technique, the switching events of electrical current from single molecule bridge tuning by electrochemical gating are investigated to uncover the relationship between electrochemical electron transfer and charge transport processes in chemical and biological molecule junctions. In this short review, we outline the latest works of single molecule electrochemistry studied with STM break-junction technique from Nongjian Tao's group, and share the insights on the opportunities and challenges for future research.

Abstract:In this short review, recent advances in electrochemical gating of electron transport across single-molecule junctions using STM and mechanically controllable break-junction techniques are discussed from two perspectives: emerging molecular materials and quantum interference manipulation. Indeed, break-junction measurements have been recently developed to explore the single-molecule physics and chemistry. Recent advances in probing molecular adsorption and reaction processes at solid/liquid interfaces using break-junction techniques are discussed. Such single-molecule measurements provide a uniform opportunity to detect molecular information including metal-molecule interaction, surface coverage and adsorption free energy, interfacial acid−base chemistry, and reaction processes. Raman measurements may also complete the picture provided by single molecule experiments.

Abstract:Single-molecule conductance measurements made under potential control provide a critical link between chemical and molecular electronic data. These measurements are made possible by the STM break-junction method introduced recently, but questions remain about its reliability. Here we report the use of a logarithmic current-to-voltage converter to examine a wide range of currents in an STM break junction study of octanedithiol, clearly showing both the gold-quantum wire regime and the single molecule conductance regime. We find two sets of molecular currents that we tentatively ascribe to different bonding geometries of the molecules in the break junction.

Abstract:We describe a method to determine whether a measured current in a break junction is due to electron tunneling via space or conduction through a molecule bridged between two electrodes. By modulating the electrode separation, we monitor both the DC and the AC components of the current. The AC component indicates if a molecule is connected to the electrodes while the DC component is the transport current through the molecule. This method allows us to remove the tunneling background from conductance histograms and unambiguously measure the I-V characteristic of single molecules. Furthermore, it provides valuable information about the electromechanical properties of single molecules.

Abstract:Single-molecule junctions — devices in which a single molecule is electrically connected by two electrodes — enable the study of a broad range of quantum-transport phenomena even at room temperature. These quantum features are related to molecular orbital and spin degrees of freedom and are characterized by various energy scales that can be chemically and physically tuned: level spacings, charging energies, tunnel couplings, exchange energies, vibrational energies and Kondo correlation energies. The competition between these different energy scales leads to a rich variety of processes, which researchers are now starting to be able to control and tune experimentally. In this Technical Review, we present the status of the molecular electronics field from this quantum-transport perspective with a focus on recent experimental results obtained using break-junction devices, including scanning probe and mechanically controlled break junctions, as well as electromigrated gold and graphene break junctions.

Abstract:We report an electrochemically assisted jump-to-contact scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) break junction approach to create reproducible and well-defined single-molecule spintronic junctions. The STM break junction is equipped with an external magnetic field either parallel or perpendicular to the electron transport direction. The conductance of Fe-terephthalic acid (TPA)-Fe single-molecule junctions is measured and a giant single-molecule tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (T-AMR) up to 53% is observed at room temperature. Theoretical calculations based on first-principles quantum simulations show that the observed AMR of Fe-TPA-Fe junctions originates from electronic coupling at the TPA-Fe interfaces modified by the magnetic orientation of the Fe electrodes with respect to the direction of current flow. The present study highlights new opportunities for obtaining detailed understanding of mechanisms of charge and spin transport in molecular junctions and the role of interfaces in determining the MR of single-molecule junctions.

Abstract:Tin-phthalocyanine molecules adsorbed on Ag(111) were contacted with the tip of a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscope. Orders-of-magnitude variations of the single-molecule junction conductance were achieved by controllably dehydrogenating the molecule and by modifying the atomic structure of the surface electrode. Nonequilibrium Green's function calculations reproduce the trend of the conductance and visualize the current flow through the junction, which is guided through molecule-electrode chemical bonds.

Abstract:After an introduction and brief review of charge transport in nanoscale molecular systems we report on experimental studies in gold / (single) molecule / gold junctions at solid / liquid interfaces employing a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM)-based 'break junction' technique. We demonstrate attempts in developing basic relationships between molecular structure, conductance properties and nanoscale electrochemical concepts based on four case studies from our own work. In experiments with alpha, omega-alkanedithiol and biphenyldithiol molecular junctions we address the role of sulfur-gold couplings and molecular conformation, such as gauche defects in the alkyl chains and the torsion angle between two phenyl rings. Combination with quantum chemistry calculations enabled a detailed molecular-level understanding of the electronic structure and transport characteristics of both systems. Employing the concept of 'electrolyte gating' with redox-active molecules, such as thiol-terminated derivatives of viologens (HS-6V6-SH or (HS-6V6)) we demonstrate the construction of symmetric and asymmetric active molecular junctions with transistor- or diode-like behavior upon polarization in an electrochemical environment. The experimental data could be represented quantitatively by the Kutznetsov/Ulstrup model assuming a two-step electron transfer with partial vibration relaxation. Finally, we show that surface-immobilized gold nanoparticles with a diameter of (2.4 +/- 0.5) nm exhibit features of locally addressable multi-state electronic switching upon electrolyte gating, which appears to be reminiscent of a sequential charging through several 'oxidation/reduction states'.

Abstract:A first-principles computational method is developed to study the electrochemical gate-controlled conductance in molecular junctions. It has been applied to a single molecular field-effect transistor made by a perylene tetracaboxylic diimide molecule connected to gold electrodes and has successfully reproduced the experimentally observed huge gate voltage effect on the current. It is found that such a significant gain is a result of the large polarization of the molecule induced by the huge local electrical field generated by the electrochemical gate. The resonant electron tunneling through unoccupied molecular orbitals is shown to be the dominant transport process.
A Theoretical Study of the Electrochemical Gate Effect in a STM-based biomolecular transistor

Abstract:ElectroChemical Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (ECSTM) is gaining popularity as a tool to implement proof-of-concept single (bio)molecular transistors. The understanding of such systems requires a discussion of the mechanism of the electrochemical current gating, which is intimately related to the electrostatic potential distribution in the tip-substrate gap where the redox active adsorbate is placed. In this article, we derive a relation that connects the local standard potential of the redox molecule in the tunneling junction with the applied electrode potentials, and we compare it with previously proposed relations. In particular, we show that a linear dependence of the local standard potential on the applied bias does not necessarily imply a monotonous potential drop between the electrodes. In addition, we calculate the electrostatic potential distribution and the parameters entering the derived relation for ECSTM on a redox metalloprotein (Azurin from P. Aeruginosa), for which experimental results exist. Finally, we give an estimate of the gating efficiency when the ECSTM setup including Azurin is interpreted as a single biomolecular wet transistor, confirming the effectiveness of the electrochemical gating for this system.

Tracking Electron Dynamics of Single Molecules in Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Junctions with Laser Pulses

Abstract:On the basis of real-time simulations, we devise a method to extend the capability of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to track the electronic dynamics of molecules on a material's surface with the ultrafast temporal resolution of laser pulses. The intrinsic mechanism of visualization of electronic dynamics by measuring tunneling charge is attributed to the interference between the electronic oscillations stimulated by pump and probe pulses. The charge-transfer rate from molecule to the surrounding environment can be estimated with the decay time of electronic dynamics, which can also be detected by measuring the tunneling charge across the STM junction. Moreover, it is found that the tunneling charge can be varied precisely by changing the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the pulses, and this phase-dependence of tunnelling diminishes as the duration of incident laser pulses increases. The proposed scheme provides an alternative means for visualization of electron dynamics of single molecules by measuring tunnelling charges.

Abstract:We have developed a combined surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and break junction method to detect and characterize molecules between two microfabricated electrodes separated with a gap that can be continuously adjusted from a few angstroms to nanometers. It allows us to obtain a vibrational fingerprint of the adjustable molecular junction while performing electron transport measurements on the molecule simultaneously. This new approach will provide not only new insights into electron transport properties of molecule junctions on a chip but also the mechanism of single-molecule-SERS.

Abstract:Charge transport characteristics in metal-metal nanocontacts and single molecular junctions were studied at electrified solid-liquid interfaces employing a scanning tunneling microscope-based break junction technique, in combination with macroscopic electrochemical methods, in non-conducting solvents and in an electrochemical environment. We aim to demonstrate recent attempts in developing fundamental relationships between molecular structure, charge transport characteristics, and nanoscale electrochemical concepts. After an introduction and brief description of the experimental methodology, a case study on the electrical and mechanical properties of gold atomic contacts in aqueous electrolytes is presented. In experiments with alkanedithiol and α,ω-biphenyldithiol molecular junctions the role of sulfur-gold couplings and molecular conformation, such as gauche defects in alkyl chains and the torsion angle between two phenyl rings, are addressed. The combination with quantum chemistry calculations enabled a detailed molecular-level understanding of the electronic structure and transport characteristics of both systems. Employing the concept of "electrolyte gating" to 4,4'-bipyridine and redox-active molecules, such as perylene bisimide derivatives, the construction of "active" symmetric and asymmetric molecular junctions with transistor- and diode-like behavior upon polarization in an electrochemical environment will be demonstrated. The latter experimental data could be represented quantitatively by the Kutznetsov/Ulstrup model, assuming a two-step electron transfer with partial vibration relaxation. Finally, we show that (individual) surface-immobilized gold clusters within the quantum-confined size range exhibit features of locally addressable multistate electronic switching upon electrolyte gating, which appears to be reminiscent of a sequential charging through several redox states. The examples addressed here demonstrate the uniqueness and capabilities of an electrochemical approach for the fundamental understanding and for potential applications in nano- and molecular electronics.
Conductance Hysteresis and Switching in a Single-Molecule Junction

Abstract:Voltage-controlled conductance hysteresis and stepwise switching in a reversible manner were observed in a single-molecule double-barrier junction defined by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) at similar to 10 K. In situ visualization and characterization of the junction using the STM revealed that the charge bistability of a single molecule on a polar alumina film is responsible for the conductance hysteresis and switching. It was also found that the relative stability between different charge states depends on the multiple adsorption configurations of molecules on the surface.

Abstract:We report on a chemical approach to fabricating double-barrier tunneling junction (DBTJ) for room-temperature single-electron tunneling studies, by which CdS nanoclusters were directly synthesized on a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) tip through an organic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and in situ chemical reaction. The SAM/CdS-modified STM tip directly establishes a DBTJ structure with highly oriented pyrolytic graphite substrate with STM-based current-voltage measurement. Clear Coulomb staircases were observed at room temperature with this experimental approach, and the reproducibility was nearly 90%. When gradually reducing the tip-substrate gap by increasing the setpoint current, the staircase width showed a gradual decrease from 320 to 180 mV. These phenomena are well described by semiclassical model for correlated single-electron tunneling. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(99)00945-6].

Abstract:The influence of relative electron tunneling rates on electron transport in a double-barrier single-molecule junction is studied. The junction is defined by positioning a scanning tunneling microscope tip above a copper phthalocyanine molecule adsorbed on a thin oxide film grown on the NiAl(110) surface. By tuning the tip-molecule separation, the ratio of tunneling rates through the two barriers, vacuum and oxide, is controlled. This results in dramatic changes in the relative intensities of individual conduction channels, associated with different vibronic states of the molecule.
Large tunable image-charge effects in single-molecule junctions

Abstract:The characteristics of molecular electronic devices are critically determined by metal-organic interfaces, which influence the arrangement of the orbital levels that participate in charge transport. Studies on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) show (molecule-dependent) level shifts as well as transport-gap renormalization, suggesting that polarization effects in the metal substrate play a key role in the level alignment with respect to the metal's Fermi energy. Here, we provide direct evidence for an electrode-induced gap renormalization in single-molecule junctions. We study charge transport in single porphyrin-type molecules using electrically gateable break junctions. In this set-up, the position of the occupied and unoccupied levels can be followed in situ and with simultaneous mechanical control. When increasing the electrode separation, we observe a substantial increase in the transport gap with level shifts as high as several hundreds of meV for displacements of a few ångstroms. Analysis of this large and tunable gap renormalization with image-charge calculations based on atomic charges obtained from density functional theory confirms and clarifies the dominant role of image-charge effects in single-molecule junctions.

Connections to the Electrodes Control the Transport Mechanism in Single‐Molecule Transistors

Abstract:When designing a molecular electronic device for a specific function, it is necessary to control whether the charge-transport mechanism is phase-coherent transmission or particle-like hopping. Here we report a systematic study of charge transport through single zinc-porphyrin molecules embedded in graphene nanogaps to form transistors, and show that the transport mechanism depends on the chemistry of the molecule–electrode interfaces. We show that van der Waals interactions between molecular anchoring groups and graphene yield transport characteristic of Coulomb blockade with incoherent sequential hopping, whereas covalent molecule–electrode amide bonds give intermediately or strongly coupled single-molecule devices that display coherent transmission. These findings demonstrate the importance of interfacial engineering in molecular electronic circuits.

Abstract:Using a scanning tunneling microscope we have measured the quantum conductance through a PTCDA molecule for different configurations of the tip-molecule-surface junction. A peculiar conductance resonance arises at the Fermi level for certain tip to surface distances. We have relaxed the molecular junction coordinates and calculated transport by means of the Landauer/Keldysh approach. The zero bias transmission calculated for fixed tip positions in lateral dimensions but different tip substrate distances show a clear shift and sharpening of the molecular chemisorption level on increasing the STM-surface distance, in agreement with experiment.
