Abstract:A dual phase glass-ceramic composite is produced by heating a CaLa(PO3)(5) glass at 800 degrees C for 20 h. The glass-ceramic consists of intertwined crystalline La(PO3)(3) and amorphous Ca(PO3)(2) with an overall conductivity of 1.52 x 10(-5) S/cm(-1) at 550 degrees C in humidified air. For the water vapor treated glass, the vibration modes of the incorporated water, as well as of P-OH groups, are detected by infrared spectroscopy in the range 3440-1660 cm(-1). The conductivity of the glass-ceramic is higher in humidified air than in dry air, consistent with proton conduction. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:By heat treating the alkaline earth fluorosilicate glass, transparent glass ceramics containing alkaline earth fluoride nanocrystallites were prepared. The luminescence spectra and phonon sideband associated with the Eu3+:5D2 → 7F0 in glass and glass ceramics were investigated to analyze the local environment around Eu3+. Judd-Ofelt parameters were also calculated from emission spectra, which indicated that the Eu3+ ions entered the precipitated CaF2, SrF2, and BaF2 nanocrystallites. Heat treating could not pledge Eu3+ ions to coordinate with F− in the precipitated MgF2 nanocrystallites, owing to the smaller radius of Mg2+ than that of Eu3+.

Abstract:Glass ceramic has been regarded as an alternative to traditional bulk materials such as single crystal and transparent ceramic. The nucleation/growth behavior of glass ceramic via crystallization is an important topic but is seldom studied so far. In the present work, a series of La3+-based oxyfluoride aluminosilicate glasses are designed to understand their nanocrystallization processes upon heating. Impressively, controllable LaF3, α-NaLaF4 and β-NaLaF4 phase-competitive crystallization in glasses is achieved and structural/spectroscopic characterizations confirm the key role of Al/Si ratio to determine the release of Na+ ions from glass network to participate in crystallization and phase transformation. Furthermore, the developed glass ceramics are evidenced to be ideal hosts for lanthanide dopants (such as Eu3+ and Yb3+/Er3+), which can effectively incorporate into the precipitated fluoride crystal lattices by substituting La3+ ions. As a consequence, incoherent LED-excitable upconverting devices are constructed to demonstrate their promising application as emitting media in display.

Abstract:La(PO3)3–Ca(PO3)2 meta-phosphate glass–ceramic composites were prepared by quenching from the melt, followed by heating at 800°C for 20h, in air. Microstructural characterization showed that exposure to water vapor pressures equal to or in excess of 4.2kPa at as low as 550°C resulted in the disproportionation of the lanthanum metaphosphates, with formation of some LaPO4. This reaction puts important limitations on the conditions under which the lanthanum metaphosphates could be used as electrolytes in electrochemical devices.

Abstract:On the basis of the density functional calculations, the proton-transfer mechanism in LaPO4 has been investigated at the atomic scale within the transition state theory. Through the use of the nudged elastic band method, the minimum energy paths of typical proton-transfer processes were computed, including intratetrahedral transfer, intertetrahedral transfer, proton rotation around PO4 tetrahedra, and the oscillatory transfer between adjacent tetrahedra. Because the PO4 tetrahedra in LaPO4 are separated, proton transfer between different tetrahedra is required for continuous proton conduction. The energy barriers for these processes are shown to be around 0.8 eV, very close to experimentally measured activation energies. The intratetrahedral transfer on the phosphate groups presents a high-energy barrier and is very unlikely to occur. Proton conductivity of LaPO4 was also calculated by considering the vibration frequencies of the system within the harmonic approximation.

Abstract:Previously unrecognized amorphous grain boundary films are shown to provide rapid proton conduction paths in polycrystalline lanthanum phosphates. Experiments reveal the amorphous phosphorus-rich grain boundary films to be stable in air at 773 K, with a conductivity upwards of 2.5×10−3 S/cm at 773 K, many orders of magnitude higher than in the crystalline bulk. The results indicate the possibility of forming stable, high proton-conductivity nanocomposites of RE-phosphate glasses and crystalline ceramics for intermediate temperature (573 K to 773 K) fuel cells.

Abstract:Li-Al-P-O-N glasses containing AlN have been successfully prepared by melting batches at 1100–1150°C under N2 atmosphere in a Si-Mo-heated resistance furnace. La2O3 was introduced in order to improve ionic conductivity of the Li-Al-P-O-N glasses. The amorphous nature of these samples was verified by an X-ray diffractometer. The effects of partial substitution of La2O3 for Al2O3 on the properties such as density, glass transition temperature, the crystallization temperature, chemical stability and ionic conductivity were investigated. At the same time, the relationship between these properties and the structures of the glasses were discussed. The structural network of the glass series is not greatly changed by small addition of La2O3 content. The introduction of La2O3 into Li-Al-P-O-N glasses enhances the ionic conductivity but decreases slightly the chemical stability, which has a potential application as Li+ solid electrolyte materials.

Abstract:In this study, we characterized the proton diffusivities of perovskite and phosphate in a protonic ceramic membrane at medium temperatures (573‒973 K). The isotropic phonon vibrations of LaGaO 3 -based perovskite oxide of La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Ga 0.8 Mg 0.2 O 3‒δ (LSGM) and phosphate of Sn 0.9 In 0.1 P 2 O 7 (SIPO), were evaluated using high-temperature X-ray diffraction measurements. In these ceramic particles, the thermal vibration of oxide ions is the most vigorous among those of consistent ions, confirming that oxide-ion vacancies play a critical role in proton conduction. The isotropic Debye temperatures (Θ D ) were estimated to be Θ D , LSGM = 432 K and Θ D , SIPO = 227 K in air, suggesting that LSGM showed high proton diffusivity. Protonic ceramics tend to have a high proton diffusivity, as confirmed at a high Debye temperature.

Abstract:Glass-ceramic electrolytes are promising for all-solid-state batteries, yet their enhanced ionic conductivity is not well understood. We investigate structural difference between ceramic and glass-ceramic Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 tuned by boron, which is found to enhance conductivities of glass-ceramics by one order of magnitude, yet reduces that of ceramics. Raman and Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectra indicate boron are primarily contained in glass phase, while electron energy-loss spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveal inhomogeneous distribution of boron and glassified grain boundaries. This substantially reduces interfacial resistance at grain boundaries with little effect on bulk resistance, which is further supported by spatial and spectroscopic electrochemical strain microscopy. The grain boundary resistance of ceramics, on the other hand, is increased by boron. We thus establish that lower interfacial resistance at glassified grain boundaries is responsible for higher conductivity in glass-ceramics, while boron can relax their grain boundaries even further.

Abstract:The phonon sideband spectra (PSB) and emission spectra of Eu3+ in transparent SiO2–PbF2 glass and glass ceramics containing β-PbF2 nanocrystals were investigated. The local vibration around Eu3+ ion in glass and glass ceramics was obtained by analyzing the phonon sideband associated with the Eu3+:5D2→7F0, and the Judd–Ofelt parameters were calculated from emission spectra. According to PSB, phonon energy around Eu3+ ion in glass ceramics was much lower than that in glass. The J–O parameters and emission spectra indicated that the Eu3+ ions had entered into crystalline environment of the β-PbF2 nanocrystals.

Abstract:© 2017 American Physical Society. We report the ferroelectric glass-glass transitions in KN(K+/Nb5+)-doped BaTiO3 ferroelectric ceramics, which have been proved by x-ray diffraction profile and Raman spectra data. The formation of glass-glass transitions can be attributed to the existence of cubic (C)-tetragonal (T)-orthorhombic (O)-rhombohedral (R) ferroelectric transitions in short-range order. These abnormal glass-glass transitions can perform very small thermal hysteresis (approximately 1.0 K) with a large dielectric constant (approximately 3000), small remanent polarization Pr, and relative high maximum polarization Pm remaining over a wide temperature range (220-350 K) under an electrical stimulus, indicating the potential applications in dielectric recoverable energy-storage devices with high thermal reliability. Further phase field simulations suggest that these glass-glass transitions are induced by the formation of a percolating electric defect-dipole network (PEDN). This proper PEDN breaks the long-range ordered ferroelectric domain pattern and results in the local phase transitions at the nanoscale. Our work may further stimulate the fundamental physical theory and accelerate the development of dielectric energy-storing devices.

Abstract:The temperature dependence of proton conductivity in 36HO 1/2 −4NbO 5/2 −2BaO-4LaO 3/2 −4GeO 2 −1BO 3/2 −49PO 5/2 glasses prepared through the alkali-proton substitution method was investigated in this study. The activation energy of proton conduction, E a , was found to exhibit an non-Arrhenius type temperature dependence. The origin of the temperature dependence of the proton conductivity caused by thermal expansion of the glass structure was discussed in terms of the effect of changes in the local environment surrounding the protons. These changes were elucidated using Raman spectroscopy, 1 H- and 31 P-NMR, infrared spectroscopy, and molecular modeling. Because protons form O-H bonds, they are sensitive to changes in the distance between two oxygen atoms, which affects the strength of the hydrogen bond, and concluded that there is a temperature dependence as observed.

Abstract:We report that a new 2D 3d-4f phosphonate [Co(III)La(III)(notpH)(H2O)6]ClO4·5H2O (CoLa-II) can undergo a phase transition above 45 °C and 93% relative humidity, resulting in [H3O][CoLa(notp)(H2O)4]ClO4·3H2O (CoLa-III). The transition is accompanied by the release of the proton from intralayer to interlayer, and thus the proton conductivity of the material is increased by 1 order of magnitude.

Abstract:The LiO2-SiO2-B2O3 (LBS) glass doped solid electrolyte Li0.5La0.5TiO3 (LLTO) ceramics were prepared by solid-state reaction method. The results show that the samples present mainly tetragonal perovskite structure and grain size increase with glass content increases. The frequency dependent AC conductivity shows two plateaus that correspond to the bulk and grain boundary responses associated with two semicircles observed in AC impedance spectrum. The maximum bulk ionic conductivity appeared at 1.0 wt% glass addition calculated by equivalent circuit at a value of 1.12 x 10(-3) S/cm, which is nearly 1.7 times compared to pure LLTO at room temperature. The overall electronic conductivity is about 10(-9) S/cm calculated from a long time leakage current measurement, which is 6 orders of magnitude lower than the ionic conductivity sigma(bulk). These results would be helpful for us to adjust and control the conductivity of glass added solid electrolyte composite for use of all-solid-state lithium batteries. (c) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The ionic conductivity of Na3PS4 can be improved via the aliovalent substitution of P and S as well as multivalence cation substitution of Na. Although the enhanced ionic conductivities of tetragonal and cubic Na3PS4 have been theoretically and experimentally studied, the dynamics of sodium ions in these systems have been rarely reported. In this study, (100−x)Na3PS4−xCa3N2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 10) glass samples were synthesizing using high‐energy planetary ball‐milling method. These samples were subjected to heat treatment at 280°C for 1 h in an argon atmosphere to obtain glass–ceramic samples. The structures of these samples were characterized via Raman spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction analysis. The lattice parameter and cell volume of the glass–ceramic samples strongly depended on the x value in (100−x)Na3PS4−xCa3N2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 10). Their ionic conductivities were determined via alternating current electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). 92Na3PS4−8Ca3N2 glass–ceramics exhibited an ionic conductivity of 8.14 × 10−4 Scm−1 at 25°C. Charge carrier concentration and hopping rate were extracted from the EIS data to determine the ionic conductivities of the samples. The activation energies of DC conductivity and mobile ion formation and migration were also derived from the EIS data to analyze the effect of Ca3N2 doping on the ionic conductivity of the synthesized samples.

Abstract:The popular electrolyte of La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3−α was prepared via microemulsion method by using (NH4)2CO3–NH4OH as the co-precipitation reagent, followed by calcination and sinteration in air. The sintered ceramic was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. The conduction behaviors in La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3−α were investigated by using the electrochemical methods including gas concentration cells and electrochemical hydrogen permeation. The results indicate that the charge carriers in La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3−α are protons under hydrogen atmosphere. Ammonia was synthesized at atmospheric pressure successfully by using La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3−α as solid electrolyte for the first time.

Abstract:Abstract Easy-to-manufacture Li 2 S-P 2 S 5 glass ceramics are the key to large-scale all-solid-state lithium batteries from an industrial point of view, while their commercialization is greatly hampered by the low room temperature Li + conductivity, especially due to the lack of solutions. Herein, we propose a nanocrystallization strategy to fabricate super Li + -conductive glass ceramics. Through regulating the nucleation energy, the crystallites within glass ceramics can self-organize into hetero-nanodomains during the solid-state reaction. Cryogenic transmission electron microscope and electron holography directly demonstrate the numerous closely spaced grain boundaries with enriched charge carriers, which actuate superior Li + -conduction as confirmed by variable-temperature solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. Glass ceramics with a record Li + conductivity of 13.2 mS cm −1 are prepared. The high Li + conductivity ensures stable operation of a 220 μm thick LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 composite cathode (8 mAh cm −2 ), with which the all-solid-state lithium battery reaches a high energy density of 420 Wh kg −1 by cell mass and 834 Wh L −1 by cell volume at room temperature. These findings bring about powerful new degrees of freedom for engineering super ionic conductors.

Abstract:Perovskite-type solid electrolyte lanthanum lithium titanate (LLTO), exhibiting high intrinsic ionic conductivity, has been attracting interests because of its potential use in all solid-state lithium-ion batteries. In this work, we prepared LLTO ceramics by solid state reaction method and studied their conductivity and dielectric properties systematically. It is found that the bulk conductivity of LLTO is several orders of magnitude higher than the grain boundary conductivity. In addition, colossal permittivity was observed in LLTO ceramics in wide frequency/temperature ranges. Two non-Debye type relaxation peaks were observed in the imaginary part of permittivity, resulting from Li+ ions motion and accumulation near interfaces of grains/grain boundaries/electrodes. It is suggested that colossal permittivity may originate from the lithium ion dipoles inside the samples and the interfacial polarization of lithium ion accumulation near the grain boundaries. These results clarify the relations among colossal permittivity, relaxation behavior and ionic conduction in solid ion conductor ceramics.
