Abstract:In recent experiments at Tsinghua University Accelerator Laboratory, the 31 MeV electron beam, which has been compressed to subpicosecond pulse durations, has been used to generate high peak power, narrow band Terahertz (THz) radiation by transit through different slow wave structures, specifically quartz capillaries metallized on the outside. Despite the high peak powers that have been produced, the THz pulse energy is negligible compared to the energy of the electron beam. Therefore, the THz generation process can be complementary to other beamline applications like plasma wakefield acceleration studies and Compton x-ray free electron lasers. This approach can be used at x-ray free electron laser beamlines, where THz radiation can be generated without disturbing the x-ray generation process. In the experiment reported here, a high peak current electron beam generated strong narrow band (∼1% bandwidth) THz signals in the form of a mixture of TM01 and TM02 modes. Each slow wave structure is completed with a mode converter at the end of the structure that allows for efficient (>90%) power extraction into free space. In the experiment, both modes in these two dielectric-loaded waveguides TM01 (0.3 THz/0.5 THz) and TM02 (0.9 THz/1.3 THz) were explicitly measured with an interferometer. The THz pulse energy was measured with a calibrated Golay cell at a few μJ.
Generating 10~40MeV high quality monoenergetic electron beams using a 5TW 60fs laser at Tsinghua University

Abstract:A unique facility for laser plasma physics and advanced accelerator research has been built recently at Tsinghua Universtiy. This system is based on Tsinghua Thomson scattering X-ray source (TTX), which combining an ultrafast TW laser with a synchronized 45MeV high brightness linac. In our recent laser wakefield acceleration experiments, we have obtained 10~40MeV high quality monoenergetic electron beams by running the laser at 5TW peak power. Under certain conditions, very low relative energy spread of a few percent can be achieved. Absolute charge calibration for three different scintillating screens has also been performed using the linac system.

Towards a compact all optical terahertz-driven electron source at Tsinghua University

Abstract:We propose a physical design of a compact all optical terahertz (THz)-driven electron source. The 300 mm accelerator beamline, powered by Joule level laser system, is easily to be integrated to tabletop scale. A dual-feed THz-driven electron gun with an exponential impedance, a tapered dielectric loaded cylindrical waveguide, THz-driven bunch compressors and permanent magnet solenoids (PMS) have been designed and optimized. Dynamics simulations show that the electron source can deliver a 19 fC, 3 MeV electron beams with a normalized transverse emittance of 0.079 {\pi}.<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://mm.mrad" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. A minimum relative energy spread of 0.04% or a minimum root-mean-square bunch length of 6.1 fs can be achieved by adjusting the beam shaping line. Sensitivity analysis shows that the THz-driven electron source can effectively work under a 1.5% energy jitter of the THz power system. Simulated diffraction pattern up to the fourth order of an aluminum sample based on the beamline can be clearly distinguished. A prototype THz gun has beam fabricated and is now under testing, more results will be reported in future works.

Abstract:THz radiation can be generated in many ways.Tsinghua University Accelerator Laboratory is committed to the development of high peak power THz radiation sources based on the relativistic electron bunches.This paper introduces the broadband THz radiation with high-gradient electric field based on single electron bunch of high peak current,and the tunable single-frequency THz radiation based on bunch train.The electron bunches are generated from the photocathode RF gun,and are accelerated to ~50 MeV after a 3 m SLAC type TW accelerating tube.Bunches are compressed to sub-picosecond by velocity bunching scheme and then used to generate intense THz pulses through Coherent Transition Radiation(CTR).Recently,experimental results have shown that the energy of CTR THz is up to 18 μJ per pulse.Besides,a new velocity bunching scheme is proposed by combining under-compression mode and drift compression,which is a promising way to further compress the electron bunch to tens of femtoseconds and to obtain ultra-broadband THz radiation ranging from 0.1 THz to 30 THz.The experimental results of electron bunch train are also introduced.Simulation results have verified the feasibility of generating tunable narrow-band THz radiation with short bunch train,and the related experiments are designed.

Abstract:Tunable and compact high power terahertz (THz) radiation based on coherent radiation (CR) of the picosecond relativistic electron bunch train is under development at the Tsinghua accelerator lab. Coherent synchronization radiation (CSR) and coherent transition radiation (CTR) are researched based on an S-band compact electron linac, a bending magnet or a thin foil. The bunch train’s form factors, which are the key factor of THz radiation, are analyzed by the PARMELA simulation. The effects of electron bunch trains under different conditions, such as the bunch number, bunch charges, micro-pulses inter-distance, and accelerating gradient of the gun are investigated separately in this paper. The optimal radiated THz power and spectra should take these factors as a whole into account.

Abstract:We report the first operation of a widely-tunable 8-period undulator at terahertz (THz) frequencies in the Tsinghua University beamline. We observed the coherent undulator radiation from sub-picosecond electron bunches of 30MeV. The measured radiation curve shows clearly that the radiation energy is proportional to the charge square, and the THz frequency can be changed from 0.4 THz to 10 THz with narrow-band spectrums. Our results demonstrate a high power and tunable coherent THz source, which could be useful for many applications in the future.
Beam optical design for high energy electron radiography experiment study based on THU LINAC

Abstract:A special beam line for high energy electron radiography is designed, including achromat and imaging systems. The requirement of the angle and position correction on the target from imaging system can be approximately realized by fine tuning the quadrupoles used in the achromat. The imaging system is designed by fully considering the limitation from the laboratory and beam diagnostics devices space. Two kinds of imaging system are designed and both show a good performance of imaging by beam trajectory simulation. The details of the beam optical requirement and optimization design are presented here. The beam line is designed and prepared to install in Tsinghua university linear electron accelerator laboratory for further precise electron radiography experiment study.

Abstract:THz radiation lying in the region between the microwaves and the infrared, with the property of high spatial resolution and low quantum energy, has wide applications. However, lacking of proper THz source has greatly delaying the related THz science and technology development. Peking University plans to construct a facility of THz source using the DC-SC superconducting accelerator. It is based on coherent undulator radiation. The source has the property of high peak power, high average power, high coherence, high repetition rate and tunable wavelength between 660-120 mu m. The facility will provider a powerful tool for the research of biology, medicine, material, telecommunication and so on. This paper gives a brief description about the design considerations and an estimation on the property of the THz source.
Researches of Thomson scattering ultra-short pulse X-ray source at Tsinghua University

Abstract:This paper introduces the studies of the ultra-short Thomson scattering X-ray source at the accelerator laboratory of Tsinghua University in recent years. Properties such as the photon yield, the pulse length and time jitter of the produced photon pulse were predicted theoretically from the parameters of the electron bunch and the laser pulse, and the scattering angle. Preliminary experiments were successfully carried out with a 16 MeV backward-traveling-wave accelerator and the ns-Q switched laser provided by China Academy of Engineering Physics. This paper also introduces the 1.6-cell electron gun that was fabricated on site and the experiment with high RF power including the measurement of the electron bunche parameters. Based on these, we have designed an X-ray source, which is now under construction. The electron bunch and laser bunch are introduced as well as the simulation results of the parameters of the X-ray pulses.
Widely Tunable Narrow-Band Coherent Terahertz Radiation from an Undulator at THU

Abstract:There is anxious demand for intense widely tunable narrow-band Terahertz (THz) radiation in scientific research, which is regarded as a powerful tool for the coherent control of matter. We report the generation of widely tunable THz radiation from a planar permanent magnet undulator at Tsinghua University (THU). A relativistic electron beam is compressed by a magnetic chicane into sub-ps bunch length to excite THz radiation in the undulator coherently. The THz frequency can be tuned from 0.4 THz to 10 THz continuously with narrow-band spectrums when the undulator gap ranges from 23mm to 75 mm. The measured pulse THz radiation energy from 220 pC bunch is 3.5 mu J at 1 THz and tens of mu J pulse energy (corresponding peak power of 10 MW) can be obtained when excited by 1 nC beam extrapolated from the property of coherent radiation. The experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions, which demonstrates a suitable THz source for the many applications that require intense and widely tunable THz sources.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) radiation is a powerful tool for exploring various scientific frontiers through THz pump–probe experiments. However, different experiments may require THz radiation with different spectral properties, such as broad-band or narrow-band, which are difficult to be generated by a single light source. In this paper, we propose a THz light source that can produce both types of THz radiation by manipulating the longitudinal profile of an electron beam and exploiting coherent transition radiation. We perform theoretical analysis and numerical simulations based on the parameters of the Shanghai soft X-ray Free-Electron Laser facility, and the results show that the proposed light source can generate broad-band THz radiation with a pulse energy of 342 μJ and narrow-band THz radiation with a pulse energy of 91 μJ. The proposed light source can offer more flexibility and versatility for free-electron laser (FEL) users to conduct THz pump–probe experiments.

Abstract:With one- and two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) codes, we simulate the generation of high power terahertz (THz) emission from the interaction of ultrashort intense lasers with tenuous plasma and gas targets. By driving high-amplitude electron plasma waves either with a laser wakefield or the beatwave of two laser pulses, powerful THz electromagnetic pulses can be produced by linear mode conversion in inhomogeneous plasma or by the transient current induced at the surfaces of a thin plasma layer of few plasma wavelengths. Even with incident lasers at moderate intensity such as 10(17)W/cm(2), the produced emission can be at the level of tens of MW in power and capable of affording field strengths of a few MV/cm, suitable for the studies of THz nonlinear physics. With field ionization included in the PIC codes, THz emission from laser interaction with tenuous gas targets is simulated. It is found that the transient transverse current formed during the ionization processes is responsible for the THz emission. With this mechanism, one may also obtain THz fields of MV/cm at lower laser intensity as compared with the schemes of plasma-wave excitation.

Abstract:We present the start-to-end simulation result on the high-current proton linac for the Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) at Tsinghua University. The CPHS project is a university-based proton accelerator platform (13 MeV, 16 kW, peak current 50 mA, 0.5 ms pulse width at 50 Hz) for multidisciplinary neutron and proton applications. The 13 MeV proton linac contains the ECR ion source, LEBT, RFQ, DTL and HEBT. The function of the whole accelerator system is to produce the proton beam, accelerate it to 13 MeV, and deliver it to the target where one uniform round beam spot is obtained with the diameter of 5 cm.

Abstract:Several kinds of low energy linacs were developed for cargo inspection, non-destructive-test and irradiation in Tsinghua University cooperated with NUCTECH. This paper gives some new applications of low energy linacs and discusses the new challenges of the electron linacs. The interlaced pulse dual energy 9/6MeV linac for material distinguishing cargo inspection and a fast-scan system using a 2.5MeV linac as its x-ray source are described.

Abstract:Thomson scattering X-ray sources are compact and a?ordable facilities that produce short duration, high brightness X-ray pulses enabling new experimental capacities in ultra-fast science studies, and also medical and industrial applications. Such a facility has been built at the Accelerator Laboratory of Tsinghua University, and upgrade is in progress. In this paper, we present a proposed layout of the upgrade with design parameters by simulation, aiming at high X-ray pulses flux and brightness, and also enabling advanced dynamics studies and applications of the electron beam. Design and construction status of main subsystems are also presented.

Abstract:On the basis of an energy-recovery linac, a terahertz (THz) source with kilowatts average power is proposed in Shanghai, which will serve as an effective tool in material and biological sciences. In this paper, the physical design of two free electron laser (FEL) oscillators, in the frequency range of 2~10THz and 0.5~2THz respectively, are presented. By using three dimensional, time-dependent numerical modeling of GENESIS in combination with paraxial optical propagation code (OPC), the THz oscillator performances, the detuning effects, and the tolerance requirements on the electron beam, the undulator filed and the cavity alignment are given.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) radiation has attracted much attention in new scientific and industrial applications. There has been significant recent progress in generating THz with accelerators. To investigate the collective behavior of electron dynamics, we have proposed a new high throughput material characterization system, which supplies a multiple light source. The system includes a pre-bunched THz free electron laser (FEL), which is a high-power narrow-band THz source with a wide tuning range of frequency. The physical design with the main components of the facility is introduced, and the simulation results are illustrated. Radiation of 0.5-3.0 THz is obtained by the fundamental wave of the pre-bunched beam, and radiation covering 3.0-5.0 THz is realized by second harmonic generation. As the simulation shows, intense THz radiation could be achieved in a frequency from 0.5-5.0 THz, with a peak power of several megawatts (MWs) and a bandwidth of a few percent.
Narrowband THz Generation by Ultra-Relativistic Beam

Abstract:High peak power, narrow band THz radiation can be generated by an ultrarelativistic electron beam passing through slow wave structure. In this paper we will review a series of recent experiments at Tsinghua University Accelerator Laboratory where a 31 MeV electron beam compressed to a sub-picosecond duration had been transported through dielectric loaded waveguide structures of various dimensions. Such high peak current electron beam generates wakefield, - a mix of TM0,N modes in the slow wave structure. This radiation is extracted from the slow wave structure and is characterized with interferometer. Narrowband signals in the range from 0.3 - 1.5 THz were measured with typical duration of few tens of picoseconds and few microjoules energy per pulse.
A Novel THz Generation Scheme Based on Plasma-Beam Interaction

Abstract:A novel scheme to produce ultra-high-current (tens of kA) electron bunch trains with tunable picosecond spacing for the generation of high-power THz sources is proposed. In this scheme, an electron beam passes through a plasma section and interacts with self-excited nonlinear plasma wake to gain a periodic “sawtooth” energy modulation. Such energy modulation is then effectively converted into a beam density modulation by means of magnetic optics forming microbunches with a high charge up to a few nC and a bunching factor as high as ~0.8. A tunable tens to hundreds of mJ level narrow-band THz radiation could be generated. This scheme can be realized in future accelerator facilities with repetition rate on the order of kHz to MHz, which provides great potential in modern science and related technologies.

Abstract:The tunability, high power, high repetition rate and picoseconds-pulse time structure of terahertz (THz) radiation make the THz free-electron laser (FEL) a very attractive THz source of coherent radiation. China Academy of Engineering Physics terahertz free electron laser (CTFEL) is the first THz FEL user facility in China, which consists of a GaAs photocathode high-voltage DC gun, a superconducting RF linac, a planar undulator and a quasi-concentric optical resonator. The terahertz laser's frequency is continuous adjustable from 0.7 THz to 4.2 THz. The average power is more than 10 W and the micro-pulse power is more than 0.3 MW. In addition, a super-radiation THz source based on CTFEL has also been built, with a frequency range of 0.1-0.7 THz. In the near future, by upgrading the electron energy, the frequency of facility will be extended to 0.1-125 THz, which will achieve full coverage of the THz band. The current status and future prospects of CTFEL THz radiation source are emphasized in this paper, and some important user experiments are introduced briefly.
