Abstract:Electricity encompasses a pivotal role in the economic development and social prosperity of a country. Unluckily, Pakistan is facing severe energy crisis, but recently the Government of Pakistan (GoP) has laid foundation of its first renewable energy policy for the development and adoption of renewable generation (RG) and to replenish energy needs. Distributed renewable generation is allocated to the remote areas, distancing it from the load centre (LC), rather than the conventional centralized bulk power generation. In lieu to the aforementioned narrative, distributed energy resources (DER) e.g., PV and wind have gained adequate and well-deserved attention of governments in acknowledgement of their eco-friendly nature. Contrarily, the accentuated penetration of distributed generation to the power system has incorporated several economical and technical glitches. To comprehend these problems, the utilization of high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission has emerged as an ultimate conceivable solution. In this regard, this paper contains a brief discussion on the fundamentals of first HVDC and its implication in Pakistani power sector. Moreover, the potential of DERs for Pakistan is also the subject matter of this paper, so that the implication of HVDC transmission can be apprehended.
