Abstract:Supported vanadium oxide is a promising catalyst in propane dehydrogenation due to its competitive performance and low cost. This paper describes the structure and catalytic properties of the VOx/ZrO2 catalyst. When using ZrO2 as the support, the catalyst shows six times higher turnover frequency (TOF) than using commercial gamma-Al2O3. Combining H-2-temperature programmed reduction, in situ Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical studies, we find that the interaction between VOx and ZrO2 can facilitate the reduction of V-O bonds, including V & xe001;O, V-O-V and V-O-Zr. The promoting effect could be attributed to the formation of low coordinated V species in VOx/ZrO2 which is more active in C-H activation. Our work provides a new insight into understanding the structure-performance correlation in VOx-based catalysts for non-oxidative propane dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Supported vanadium oxides are one of the most promising alternative catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) and efforts have been made to improve its catalytic performance. However, unlike Pt-based catalysts, the nature of the active site and surface structure of the supported vanadium catalysts under reductive reaction conditions still remain elusive. This paper describes the surface structure and the important role of surface-bound hydroxyl groups on VOx / γ-Al2 O3 catalysts under reaction conditions employing in situ DRIFTS experiments and DFT calculations. It is shown that hydroxyl groups on the VOx /Al2 O3 catalyst (V-OH) are produced under H2 pre-reduction, and the catalytic performance for PDH is closely connected to the concentration of V-OH species on the catalyst. The hydroxyl groups are found to improve the catalyst that leads to better stability by suppressing the coke deposition.

Abstract:The nano‐catalysts of VOx deposited on ZrO2 supports with single monoclinic (ZrO2‐M), tetragonal (ZrO2‐T), and binary monoclinic‐tetragonal (ZrO2‐MT) phase were synthesized. VOx/ZrO2‐MT catalysts exhibit better performance during propane non‐oxidative dehydrogenation (PDH) than VOx/ZrO2‐M and VOx/ZrO2‐T catalysts. Among VOx/ZrO2‐MT catalysts, the conversion and deactivation rate constant of VOx/ZrO2‐M31T69 catalyst is 35.2 % and 0.216 h‐1, respectively. The promoting role of ZrO2‐MT is revealed by experiments and theoretical calculations. The MT‐mixed phase structure in VOx/ZrO2‐MT catalyst improves the structural properties and dispersion of VOx. The tetragonal‐monoclinic transformation on the ZrO2‐MT surface facilitates VOx reduction and produces additional V3+ active sites. The highly dispersed V3+ sites on the ZrO2‐MT surface accelerate C‐H bond breaking and boost the desorption of propylene, which is the key reason for enhancing activity and stability during the PDH reaction, respectively. Bridging the Structural Gap of Supported Vanadium Oxides for Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane with Carbon Dioxide

Abstract:As an extensively used industrial catalyst for oxidation reactions, supported vanadium oxide (VOx) is a promising candidate for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with carbon dioxide (CO2-ODP). Although the structure of VOx is found to be a key factor in determining the catalytic activity and stability of supported VOx for CO2-ODP, the essential reason still remains elusive at the molecular level. To shed some light on this fundamental issue, VOx/(−)SiO2 catalysts with narrow distributions of V loading while well-defined structures of VOx species, i.e., monomeric VOx, less polymeric VOx, highly polymeric VOx and V2O5 crystallites, were purposely synthesized by appropriate methods, including one-pot hydrothermal synthesis, incipient wetness impregnation and physical grinding. We found that the catalytic activity and stability of VOx species decrease in the order of monomeric VOx > less polymeric VOx > highly polymeric VOx > crystalline V2O5, which coincides with the ability for the re-oxidation of the correspondingly reduced VOx species by CO2. As a result of the most facile re-oxidation of the reduced monomeric VOx species by CO2, a well matched redox cycle of V5+/V4+ oxides during CO2-ODP can be maintained with increasing the time on stream, leading to an improved stability of the catalyst with more monomeric VOx. These mechanistic findings on the redox properties of VOx with different structures can be guidelines for developing a high-performance VOx-based catalyst for CO2-ODP.
Enhancing propane direct dehydrogenation performances through temperature induced VOx dispersion and alumina support phase transformation

Abstract:Vanadium oxide-based catalysts are promising candidates for propane direct dehydrogenation. A strategy was developed in the present study to enhance the intrinsic activity and coking-resistance of supported VOx catalysts at the same time. The annealing temperature and VOx surface density were identified as regulation parameters to tailor the dispersion of VOx and micro-environment of V-O-Al active sites. The surface acidic VOx was found capable of inducing local structure rearrangement of transition alumina and the transformation of amorphous δ- to more crystalline θ-alumina at relatively lower temperatures, contributing to lowering VOx-support interactions and enhancing VOx reducibility. The DFT calculations verify that the chemical states of V-O active sites could be tuned by the ligand Al3+ coordination micro-environment, and the octahedral Al3+ serving as ligands contributes to enhancing the reducibility and C–H bond rupture capability of V-O site. The annealing temperature was also found capable of dispersing VOx species over alumina surface with the optimal temperature dependent of specific VOx loadings. As a consequence, the intrinsic activity of 3.1 V/Al2O3-900 and the deactivation rate of 3.1 V/Al2O3-700 with dominantly isolated VOx is 1.4 times and 0.65 times that of 3.1 V/Al2O3-550, respectively.

Abstract:In this work, a series of VO x -loaded In2O3 catalysts were prepared, and their catalytic performance was evaluated for CO2-assisted oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (CO2-ODHP) and compared with In2O3 alone. The optimal composition is obtained on 3.4V/In2O3 (surface V density of 3.4V nm–2), which exhibited not only a higher C3H6 selectivity than other V/In catalysts and In2O3 under isoconversion conditions but also an improved reaction stability. To elucidate the catalyst structure–activity relationship, the VO x /In2O3 catalysts were characterized by chemisorption [NH3-temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), NH3-diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), CO2-TPD, and CO2-DRIFTS], H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), in situ Raman spectroscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and further examined using density functional theory. The In–O–V structure and the extent of oligomerization, which play a crucial role in improving selectivity and stability, were identified in the VO x /In2O3 catalysts. In particular, the presence of surface VO x (i) inhibits the deep reduction of In2O3, thereby preserving the activity, (ii) neutralizes the excess basicity on In2O3, thus suppressing propane dry reforming and achieving a higher propylene selectivity, and (iii) introduces additional redox sites that participate in the dehydrogenation reaction by utilizing CO2 as a soft oxidant. The present work provides insights into developing selective, stable, and robust metal-oxide catalysts for CO2-ODHP by controlling the conversion of reagents via desired pathways through the interplay between acid–base interactions and redox properties.

Abstract:Vanadium oxide-based catalysts are promising candidates for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) with and without CO2 introduction. In the present study, the effects of support and CO2 on the intrinsic activity of VO x -based catalysts were systematically investigated by a combination of experimental and theoretical calculations. The activity of VO x was found to vary significantly with oxide supports, among which the activity of ZrO2-supported VO x is 4 times higher than that of other samples, which can serve as highly active and stable catalysts at a H2/C3H8 ratio of 0.5. The experiments and established scaling relationships based on density functional theory calculations reveal that the chemical states of bridge oxygen in the V–O bond play critical roles in propane activation under the reductive condition, and the weaker VO x –support interactions result in lower electron density of bridge oxygen and thus contributing to higher C–H bond rupture capability as that of VO x /ZrO2. Relatively lower apparent activation energies of PDH in the CO2 atmosphere were observed for all samples. However, whether the activity promotional effect of CO2 could be observed experimentally depend largely on the coking behaviors of catalysts because the H2 lean conditions caused by CO2 would lead to faster deactivation of catalysts with a higher VO x polymerization degree and stronger support acidity. The basic principles established in the present study will help to further tune the micro-environment of the V–O active site for high-performance PDH and CO2-PDH reactions.

Abstract:Supported VOx catalysts are promising for use in propane dehydrogenation (PDH) because of the relatively superior activity and stable performance upon regeneration. However, the nature of the active sites and reaction mechanism during PDH over VOx-based catalysts remains elusive. We examined active species by attaining various fractions of V5+, V4+, and V3+ ions by adjusting the surface vanadium density on an alumina support. The results reveal a close relationship between TOF and the fraction of V3+ ion, indicating that V3+ was more active for PDH. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy showed the same strong adsorbed species during both propane dehydrogenation and propylene hydrogenation. The results indicated that such an intermediate may correspond to V species containing a C═C bond, i.e., V–C3H5, and a reaction mechanism was proposed accordingly.

Abstract:Selective oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with CO 2 (CO 2 -ODP) represents a promising pathway of propylene production and CO 2 utilization. Presently, vanadium (V) based catalysts are commonly used due to the excellent redox ability originated from the multivalent V. However, the CO 2 -ODP reaction mechanism remains elusive, limiting the rational design of highly efficient catalytic systems. Herein, we introduced Fe into impregnated V-Al 2 O 3 to build a dual-sites catalyst including Fe and V, achieving a C 3 H 8 conversion at ∼43 % and C 3 H 6 selectivity exceed 80 %. Via regulating the Fe/V molar ratio, we clearly describe that the formation of unique Fe-O-V facilitated the CO 2 dissociation. Intrinsically, V is the main active site contributing for C 3 H 8 dehydrogenation while Fe site is responsible for the CO 2 dissociation, replenishing lattice oxygen to enhance oxidative dehydrogenation of C 3 H 8 . The design of dual-sites catalyst and extraction of molecular understanding provide guidance for the rational development of highly active CO 2 -ODP catalysts.

Abstract:The state and reactivity of surface oxygen species of mesoporous silica-supported vanadium oxide catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane have been investigated by microreactor tests combined with in-situ electron spin resonance, temperature-programmed surface reaction, and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The pore diameter of the SBA-15, MCM-41, and silica gel supports exert great influences on the dispersion state of VOx species and the catalytic properties of the supported vanadium oxide catalysts. The SBA-15-supported vanadium oxide catalyst has the highest selectivity for propylene because of its larger pore diameter and higher surface area. Surface lattice oxygen species of the VOx/SBA-15 catalyst are main active species for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane to propylene. Highly dispersed VOx species have high catalytic reactivity for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane. CO2 can regenerate the lattice oxygen species of supported vanadium oxide catalysts. The high propylene selectivity for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane by CO2 on supported vanadium oxide catalysts is related to weaker oxidizing effect of CO2, which inhibits the direct C3H8 oxidation and the consecutive oxidation of C3H6 to COx.
Total oxidation of propane over Co3O4-based catalysts: Elucidating the influence of Zr dopant

Abstract:A series of Zr-doped Co(3)O(4 )catalysts (x% Zr-Co3O4), prepared by citrate sol-gel method with a low doping amount of zirconium, was applied in the catalytic oxidation of 1000 ppm propane at a weight hourly space velocity of 40,000 mL g(-1) h(-1). Different techniques were used to characterize the catalysts. The results showed that the physicochemical properties and catalytic performances of the x% Zr-Co(3)O(4 )catalysts were significantly influenced by the addition of zirconium. Only a small part of Zr could be doped into the Co(3)O(4 )lattice and the spare Zr would prefer to aggregate on the surface to form zirconium oxide. In the x% Zr-Co(3)O(4 )catalysts, Zr disordered Co3O4 spinet is formed by entering into the Co(3)O(4 )lattice and forming Co-O-Zr species, resulting in smaller Co(3)O(4 )crystallite size, larger specific surface area, better low-temperature reducibility, higher surface Co2+ concentration, and higher content of surface oxygen vacancies and active oxygen species. The best performance was achieved on 1% Zr-Co3O4 for propane oxidation, with 90% propane conversion at 241 degrees C. The most active catalyst showed excellent performance in toluene and propene oxidation as well. Propane reaction tests, carried out without oxygen in the gas stream, indicated the promoting effect of the low amount of Zr on the oxygen mobility of x% Zr-Co(3)O(4 )catalysts. Durability tests of propane oxidation showed that stable conversion could be achieved over 1% Zr-Co3O4, thus being a potential active catalyst for practical application.

Abstract:Supported vanadium oxides are promising in propane non-oxidative dehydrogenation and the activity of which shows clear support effects. The present study reports the effects of alumina polymorphs on the structure and performances of VOx-based catalysts. VOx/Al2O3 catalysts with the same V surface density were prepared over four different alumina supports (γ-Al2O3, δ-Al2O3, θ-Al2O3, θ,α-Al2O3) obtained by varying the calcination temperature of boehmite. The alumina calcination temperature was shown to affect the surface acid properties and VOx-support interactions and make it possible to tune the activity and coking behavior of catalysts. Weakening the VOx-support interactions due to the change in alumina surface properties was found critical to improve the intrinsic activity of catalysts. The coking behavior of catalysts was shown to depend on both total acid sites and VOx polymerization degree. This study may provide basic principles to tune the performance of VOx-based catalysts for non-oxidative dehydrogenation.

Abstract:The present study investigated the influence of silica support texture on the catalytic performance of VO x /silica catalysts in the selective oxidation of propane. Two- and three-dimensional mesoporous materials, SBA-15 and MCF, were synthesized using hydrothermal methods to create different pore structures. Vanadium (approximately 5 wt%) was incorporated into the silica matrices (MCF, SBA-15) and SiO 2 (used as a reference system) through impregnation. The surface composition, valence state, and reducibility of the VO x species accommodated in VO x /silica catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (H 2 -TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) techniques. The catalytic properties of the catalysts were evaluated in the propane selective oxidation conducted at 470 °C, utilizing a mixture of oxidants (N 2 O and O 2 ). Propane oxidation resulted in propane conversion of 34 %, propene selectivity of 49 %, and propene oxide selectivity of 20 %, corresponding to space–time yield of propene reaching 37 g C3H6 kg cat -1 ·h -1 and propene oxide equal to 20 g PO kg cat -1 h −1 The textural properties of the support materials noticeably influenced the stability of the catalysts. The vanadium catalysts supported on three-dimensional mesocellular silica foams (MCF) demonstrated superior activity, achieving turnover frequency (TOF) values of 9.0 × 10 −4 s −1 for propene and 6.67 × 10 −4 s −1 for propene oxide (PO). The unique three-dimensional ultra-large pores of the MCF material facilitated the generation of significant amounts of propene oxide, along with propene, while minimizing the formation of CO, CO 2 , and other oxygen-bearing by-products. Operando UV–vis studies supported by two-dimensional correlation analysis (2D COS) were employed to explain the diversity in the catalytic performance of VO x /silica catalysts. It has been found that the oligomeric vanadium species are the active sites in propane oxidative dehydrogenation, whereas the monomeric forms participate in propene oxide formation. Abstract:Supported VOx catalysts are promising nonoxidative propane dehydrogenation (PDH) materials for their commercially attractive activity and propylene selectivity. However, they frequently suffer from rapid deactivation caused by coke deposition. This article describes the promoting role of magnesium on the stability of VOx/Al2O3 catalysts for PDH. A series of VOx/Al2O3 and Mg-modified VOx/Al2O3 catalysts were synthesized by an incipient wetness impregnation method. The catalysts were carefully characterized by Raman spectra, UV-Vis spectra, STEM, TGA and in situ DRIFTS. We showed that the stability of a 12V/Al2O3 catalyst was significantly improved on addition of small amounts of MgO. Experimental evidences indicate that V2O5 nanoparticles emerge in the 12V/Al2O3 samples, and appropriate Mg addition helps dispersing the V2O5 nanoparticles into 2D VOx species thus decreasing coke formation and improving stability in nonoxidative dehydrogenation of propane. Tailoring Catalytic Properties of V2O3 to Propane Dehydrogenation Through Single-Atom Doping: A DFT Study

Abstract:Vanadium-oxide-based catalysts have recently been found very promising for the catalytic dehydrogenation of propane. In this work, self-consistent density functional theory calculations have been performed to examine how the electronic structure of the V2O3(0001) surface is modified by single-atom doping and how the catalytic properties can be tailored to propane dehydrogenation. The structural stability of single-atom-doped V2O3(0001) surfaces is assessed by comparing the adsorption energies of single atoms with the cohesive energies of bulk metals. A weak Lewis acid-base interaction is found to occur on the pristine surface, which can be strengthened and weakened by substitution of single atoms for V and O, respectively. On these two types of oxide surfaces, single atoms act as promoters and active sites. The first dehydrogenation step is identified as the rate-limiting step by microkinetic analysis. On all the single-atom-doped surfaces, the activation energy for water formation is higher than that for hydrogen recombination, implying that reduction of the oxide surfaces is difficult to take place during the course of the reaction. If a compromise between the catalytic activity and catalyst selectivity is made, Mn-1-V2O3 is suggested to be a good candidate as the catalyst for propane dehydrogenation.
Catalytic Combustion of Propane over Zr-Modified Co3O4 Catalysts: an Experimental and Theoretical Study

Abstract:As one of the domain volatile organic compounds (VOC), short chain alkane is an obstacle for low-temperature purification. Here, cobalt-zirconium oxides catalysts in a range of Co/Zr ratios were synthesized by sol-gel method for the catalytic combustion of propane. The result indicates that the catalyst with a ratio of Co to Zr of 4 (Co4Zr1) not only exhibits the superior catalytic performance with 90% conversion at 242 C, but also maintains high thermal stability and water resistance. The synergistic effect between Co and Zr over cobalt zirconium oxides catalysts contributes to the high increase of catalytic activity, which are relevant to the formation of ZrO2-Co3O4 solid solution. Additionally, the introduced Zr leads to more surface Co3+ species and surface-absorbed oxygen over Co4Zr1 catalyst. Moreover, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) reveals Co4Zr1 catalyst exposes abundant (220) crystal face. Density functional theory (DFT) suggests that Co3O4 (220) shows lowest adsorption energy (-0.71 eV) and the formation of oxygen defects will reduce the adsorption energy (-1.03 eV). All these results confirm that the CoxZry catalysts are promising alternative for propane degradation and provide important guiding significance for the design of catalysts and catalytic combustion kinetics.
Understanding the origin for propane non-oxidative dehydrogenation catalysed by d2-d8 transition metals

Abstract:Non-oxidative dehydrogenation of propane is a potential route to produce more valuable chemical feedstock propene. Understanding of the catalytic origin is essential for high performance catalysts design. Herein, the detailed mechanisms for non-oxidative dehydrogenation of propane catalysed by silica supported vanadium are systematically studied to elucidate a possible reaction network, in which the stepwise dissociative C-H bond activation is consistently most favourable. Consequently, stepwise dissociative C-H bond activation is used to investigate the d 2–d 8 transition metal-catalysed non-oxidative dehydrogenation of propane. Frontier orbital analysis reveals that non-oxidative dehydrogenation of propane originates from the interaction between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of propane and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the catalysts, indicating that the smaller the gap between the HOMO and LUMO, the higher the reaction activity. Moreover, the largest energy barriers for these reactions correlate with the LUMOcatalyst–HOMOpropane gap. A lower LUMOcatalyst–HOMOpropane gap leads to a lower reaction barrier and higher activity of the catalyst. This study provides a new strategy of theoretical catalyst design for non-oxidative propane dehydrogenation by modulating the gap between the HOMO of propane and the LUMO of catalysts.

Abstract:Recently, the ZrO2-based catalysts for PDH exhibited high activity owing to the formation of oxygen vacancy and coordinatively unsaturated Zr (Zrcu) sites. However, industrial C3H8 raw gases typically contain trace amounts of oxygen at 10-1000 ppm, which can significantly decrease the PDH activity of nano-sized ZrO2 catalyst, because that oxygen vacancy can be filled by the O2 molecules rapidly, while the rate of lattice oxygen consumption is relatively slow. Here, highly dispersed NiOx species loading on ZrO2 significantly increased C3H6 formation rate (up to 6.6 times) and decreased the activation energy. The strong interaction between NiOx species and ZrO2 enhances the ability of ZrO2 to release its lattice oxygen, and increases the concentration of oxygen vacancy and unsaturated Zr-O acid-base pairs for PDH. This strategy can expand to other metal oxides interacted with ZrO2 to eliminate the inhibiting effect of trace oxygen, such as GaOx, CoOx, CrOx, LaOx, and InOx.
