Abstract:By integrating redox self-assembly and redox etching processes, we report a general one-pot strategy for the synthesis of Au@multi-M x O y (M = Co, Ce, Fe, and Sn) yolk@shell nanospheres. Without any additional protecting molecule or reductant, the whole reaction is a clean redox process that happens among the inorganic metal salts in an alkaline aqueous solution. By using this method, Au@Co3O4/CeO2 (Au@Co-Ce), Au@Co3O4/Fe2O3 (Au@Co-Fe), and Au@CeO2/SnO2 (Au@Ce-Sn) yolk@shell nanospheres with binary oxides as shells, Au@Co3O4/CeO2/Fe2O3 (Au@Co-Ce-Fe) yolk@shell nanospheres with ternary oxides as shells and Au@Co3O4/CeO2/Fe2O3/SnO2 (Au@Co-Ce-Fe-Sn) yolk@shell nanospheres with quaternary oxides as shells can be obtained. Subsequently, the catalytic CO oxidation was selected as the catalytic model, and the Au@Co-Ce system was chosen as the catalyst. It was found that the catalytic activity of Au@Co-Ce yolk@shell nanospheres can be optimized by altering the relative proportion of Co and Ce oxides.

Abstract:We report a "one-pot" method for the direct synthesis of an organosilica shell/silica core nanoreactor confined with ultra-small metal (Au, Pd, and Ru) nanoparticles. The nano-reactor confined with Au nanoparticles showed high activity towards styrene oxidation using O2 as the oxidant under 1 atm pressure and could be stably recycled without deterioration of both conversion and selectivity. The strategy could be adapted onto other nanostructures with little modification to obtain yolk-shell nanoreactors for catalysis application.
Hollow‐Co3O4@Co3O4@SiO2 Multi‐Yolk‐Double‐Shell Nanoreactors for Highly Efficient CO Oxidation

Abstract:The engineering of highly active, stable, and inexpensive catalysts for CO oxidation reaction through the modulations of morphology and structure is desirable but remains a great challenge. Herein, we reported the rational design of novel hollow-Co3O4@Co3O4@SiO2 multi-yolk-double-shell nanoreactors by using a two-step annealing recipe employing core-shelled ZIF-67@SiO2 as a precursor. The unique structures of the multi-yolk-double-shell and hollow interior of Co3O4 endowed the materials with promising properties of sufficient active interfacial sites, porous structures, efficient oxygen delivery capacity, and more oxygen vacancies, which were beneficial for CO oxidation. Consequently, the H-Co3O4@Co3O4@SiO2(35)-250 nanoreactor exhibited outstanding catalytic performance, achieving complete CO conversion at 100 degrees C, which was far exceeding that of hollow Co3O4 NPs derived from pure ZIF-67 and also solid Co3O4@SiO2(35)-250 with a complete conversion of CO at 190 and 230 degrees C, respectively, and even outperformed most of the reported Co3O4-based catalysts. Moreover, H-Co3O4@Co3O4@SiO2(35)-250 could continuously work for 28 h without any deactivation and maintain 93% CO conversion within 34 h at 100 degrees C. The proposed strategy of designing and fabricating novel structures offers great opportunities in developing highly active hollow metal oxide-based nanoreactors for a variety of advanced applications.

Abstract:Core–shell heterostructures have been utilized as a catalyst that is thermally stable and exhibits a synergistic effect between core and shell, resulting in increased catalytic activity. Here we report on the synthetic procedure involving a Au144 core with an iron oxide shell which can be varied in thickness. The Au144@Fe2O3 particles with Au:Fe mass ratios of 1:2, 1:4, and 1:6 were synthesized and then deposited onto silica via colloidal deposition. Using CO oxidation, each Au144@Fe2O3/SiO2 catalyst gave varying degrees of full CO conversion depending on the thickness of the iron oxide layer. The 1:4 Au144@Fe2O3/SiO2 catalyst produced the best catalytic activity and was further investigated via thermal treatments, where calcination at 300 °C presented the best results, and the 1:4 ratio was still active at 100 °C after thermal treatments.

Abstract:We introduced a new nanoreactor system consisting of nanochannel-filled Fe3O4 core and SiO2 shell. Different morphologies of Fe3O4@SiO2 Core-shell nanostructures could be obtained through simple HCI etching of the magnetic cores. The outer silica shells were permeable and the Fe3O4 cores were accessible to the reactants. Therefore, the present nanoreactor system was applied to catalyze the reduction of H2O2, and it showed outstanding catalytic activity compared with bare Fe3O4 or Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles.

Abstract:In this work, core-alloyed shell structured (CAS) Fe@FeCo di-atomic nanoclusters loaded in carbon aerogels (CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NC/C catalysts) were successfully prepared by utilizing the spatial confinement effect of poly-aniline (PANI) hydrogels led by strong chelation among Fe3+ ions, tannic acid (TA), and amino (or imino) groups of PANI polymer chains. The spatial confinement effect can guarantee the formation of CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NCs with sizes between 1.4 and 2.4 nm. Moreover, N4-Fe-O-Co-N4 units are composed of the alloyed shells of the CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NCs, which can act as bi-functional active sites. In addition, N4-Fe-O-Fe-N4 units are the main component of their cores (like Fe-SA-NCs), which would slightly help strengthen the adsorption ability of bi-functional active sites of the CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NCs to the reactants. The core-alloyed shell structure of the CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NCs are demonstrated by results of X-ray photoelectron spectra, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and control experiments. Thus, the CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NC is proposed as a new type of active species with bi-functional active sites for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Thanks to their unique features as active species (proper size, core-alloyed shell structure, and bi-functional active sites), the as-prepared CAS Fe@FeCo DA-NC/C catalysts show excellent performance as bi-functional catalysts in the oxygen reduction re -action (ORR) with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.895 V (Delta E1/2 = 34 mV vs of Pt/C) in alkaline media and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, 133 mV @ 10 mA cm-2) in acidic media.

Abstract:Noble metal/transition metal (hydr) oxide interfaces are often highly active catalytic sites for many oxidation reactions. One of the challenges in such catalyst systems especially in high-temperature reactions is the lack of an effective mechanism to stabilize the catalysts against sintering over time and to maintain the metal/oxide interfaces. Herein, we report an alloying-dealloying process for the production of ultrafine Pt/FeOx nanoconjugates (similar to 1.8 nm) with confinement in silica nanoshells for effective stabilization. The synthesis started with coating of ultrasmall Pt/Fe precursor nanoparticles in reverse micelles by a microporous silica shell, which served as a nanoreactor to allow the subsequent transformation of the precursor nanoparticles into the target Pt/FeOx nanoconjugates. Thanks to the ultrasmall size of the nanoconjugates and their effective protection by the silica shells, the resulting Pt/FeOx@SiO2 yolk/shell nanospheres showed high catalytic activity and remarkable durability in preferential CO oxidation in H-2 (PROX). This synthesis strategy may represent a general approach in rational design of highly stable catalysts with complex nanostructures for a broad range of catalysis.

Abstract:Novel OER catalysts - monodisperse Au@Co3O4 core-shell nanocrystals - have been prepared by synthesizing Au nanocrystals, followed by deposition of Co shells and their conversion to Co3O4 shells. Owing to the synergistic effect, Au@Co3O4 nanocrystals have an OER activity 7 times as high as a Au and Co3O4 nanocrystals mixture or Co3O4 nanocrystals alone, and 55 times as high as Au nanocrystals alone.

Abstract:SiO2-Ag-SiO2, a sandwiched core/shell structure with a layer of Ag nanoparticles (∼4 nm) encapsulated between a shallow SiO2 surface layer and a SiO2 submicrosphere substrate (∼200 nm), has been synthesized from [Formula: see text] and SiO2 spheres by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. The composite is proposed to result from the dynamic balance between the [Formula: see text] reduction and the dissolution-redeposition of SiO2 in mild basic media. The synthetic mechanism and the roles of the reaction time, temperature, and the amount of ammonia in the formation of this unique structure are investigated and discussed. The composite structure shows superior catalytic performance in CO oxidation to the control Ag/SiO2 structure prepared by impregnation. Pre-treatment by O2 at 600 °C significantly improves the catalytic performance of the composite structure and preserves the nanocomposite structure well.
Restructuring‐Induced Activity of SiO2‐Supported Large Au Nanoparticles in Low‐Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:Large Au nanoparticles with an average size of approximately 10 nm supported on inert SiO(2) become active in low-temperature CO oxidation after the addition of NaNO(3). The catalyst structures have been characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The NaNO(3) additive in Au/SiO(2) catalysts does not lead to the formation of fine Au nanoparticles, which are generally considered to be inevitable in low-temperature CO oxidation catalyzed by gold, nor does it alter the electronic structure of Au. The NaNO(3)-induced restructuring of large Au nanoparticles was proposed to create low-coordinated Au sites on the surface capable of catalyzing low-temperature CO oxidation. These results experimentally prove that the activity of supported Au nanoparticles in low-temperature CO oxidation could solely arise from their geometric structure, which greatly deepens the fundamental understandings of Au nanocatalysis.

Abstract:Herein, we report novel gold catalysts made by dispersing Au@Fe2O3 core-shell structures on solid supports. In the synthesis of Au@Fe2O3 core-shell structures, dodecanethiol-capped gold nanoparticles were used as the seed and Fe(CO)(5) was used as the precursor to Fe2O3 shell. The Au@Fe2O3 core-shell particles were deposited onto SiO2 support to obtain Au@Fe2O3/SiO2 catalysts that were highly active for low-temperature CO oxidation. The catalytic activity was even higher than that of Au/SiO2 or Au/Fe2O3 prepared by colloidal deposition with comparable gold loadings. The influences of thermal pretreatment, shell thickness, and different supports (e. g., SiO2, TiO2, C, Fe2O3) were investigated, and relevant characterization using TG/DTG, XRD, TEM, HAADF, and EDX was conducted. Abstract:In this paper, rattle-type Co3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles were prepared via thermal decomposition of Co-3[Co(CN)(6)](2)@SiO2 core-shell nanocubes. The uniform Co-3[Co(CN)(6)](2) nanocubes were coated with porous silica and then calcined at 550 degrees C for 1 h to generate a large amount of Co3O4 nanocrystals in a cube-shaped silica nanocapsule via thermal decomposition of a Co-3[Co(CN)(6)](2) nanocube. The nanorattles exhibit excellent catalytic activity for CO oxidation, the CO conversion rate reaches 100% at 150 degrees C. It is suggested that Co3O4 nanocrystals with clean surfaces were produced via this approach; moreover, the porous silica shell could protect Co3O4 nanocrystals from external contamination, which makes these novel nanostructures exhibit a remarkable catalytic performance.
Substantial Pretreatment Effect on CO Oxidation over Controllably Synthesized Au/FeOx Hollow Nanostructures Via Hybrid Au/β-FeOOH@SiO2

Abstract:A novel synthetic strategy has been adopted to deposit Au nanoparticles (NPs) (ca. 5 nm) on a hollow FeOx substrate using Au/beta-FeOOH hybrid nanocrystals as the precursor. Through the encapsulation of Au/beta-FeOOH by SiO2 shells and the calcination step, the Au/beta-FeOOH can be transformed into Au/FeOx with the hollow structural feature. Because of the protective SiO2 shells, aggregation of the Au NPs is effectively prohibited, and the hemispherical morphology of the Au particles is essentially retained. The Au/FeOx hollow composite is obtained by removing the SiO2 shells, and the Au NPs in the final Au/FeOx hollow composite are small-sized yet stable enough because of the calcination history. The derived Au/FeOx hollow composite shows a substantial pretreatment effect on CO oxidation: with a pretreatment in the reaction feed at 180 degrees C for 0.5 h, the hollow Au/FeOx shows the T-100 of CO oxidation decreasing from 180 to 88 degrees C. O-2 temperature-programmed desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterizations revealed that the pretreatment may result in (i) the creation of electron holes in the p-type FeOx substrate and electron deficiency of Au nanoparticles as well as a strong Au-FeOx interaction; (ii) appropriate coverage of oxygen adspecies on the Au NPs; and (iii) increased surface oxygen density, especially at the Au-FeOx boundary region, as a result of the spillover effect of oxygen adspecies from Au NPs. All of these features are responsible for an overall enhanced activity of CO oxidation and better durability of the Au/FeOx hollow composite.
High-Temperature-Stable Au@SnO2 Core/Shell Supported Catalyst for CO Oxidation

Abstract:High-temperature-stable Au@SnO2 core/shell supported catalyst was prepared by a simple intermetallics-based dry-oxidation approach in which the size of the core can be controlled easily by varying the size of the pre-made Au seeds. The change of their structure was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In the as-prepared supported catalysts, An particles with a mean size of ca. 15 nm were highly encapsulated by the SnO2, shell. Moreover, the Au@SnO2 core/shell supported catalysts showed superior catalytic activity compared to non-encapsulated Au-SnO2. XPS spectra showed that the interactions between the Au catalyst and oxide support in the well-encapsulated Au@SnO2 core/shell nanoparticles are much stronger than those in the non-encapsulated Au-SnO2 nanoparticles, further indicating the synergetic confinement effect in such nanoscaled catalyst/ support core/shell systems.
Active yet extremely durable Co3O4 spheroids of different texture without/with Au deposition for CO oxidation

Abstract:Spherically shaped Co3O4 particles were synthesized by one-pot solvothermal treatment of Co(NO3)(2) in n-octanol that is free of structure-directing agents or pore formers. Au nanoparticles (2-4 nm) dispersed on the Co3O4 substrates were fabricated using deposition-precipitation method. The as-synthesized Co3O4 (without calcination) and the corresponding Au-containing catalyst achieved complete CO oxidation at 90 degrees C and 80 degrees C, respectively. Upon calcination, the condensed Co3O4 formed on which uniform dispersion of small-sized flat Au entities (3.0 +/- 0.6 nm) with large Au-Co3O4 interfaces was established, showing complete CO oxidation at 110 degrees C. These two types of catalysts were found to be extremely durable even when operated in a period beyond 70 h under certain conditions. The calcined Co3O4-based Au catalyst can outperform Au/d-Co3O4 in both activity and stability when subjected to a pre-reaction at 350 degrees C for 5 h. The yolk-shell type Co3O4@SiO2 catalysts synthesized by controllable acid-etching of Co3O4 cores demonstrated an optimal Co3O4 core-SiO2 shell interaction and a suitable Co3O4 core particle size for CO oxidation. Both Co3O4 substrates and Au/Co3O4 systems were found to encounter substantial activity enhancement by in situ pretreatment. The pretreatment resulted in (i) transformation of AuOx to Au-0, (ii) higher fraction of surface Co3+, and (iii) suitably lower concentration of surface oxygen adspecies, accounting for the enhanced activities.

Abstract:Noble metal based one-dimensionally (1D) bimetallic nanostructures are attracting increasing interest in energy conversion field because of their structural advantages and tunable chemical composition. At present, the facile and efficient synthesis of high-quality Au-core noble metal-shell nanowires still maintains the challenge. Herein, we develop a feasible one-pot chemical-reduction strategy to rapidly synthesize high-quality core-shell nanowires ( CSNWs) in 1-naphthol ethanol solution and explore their potential application in electrocatalysis. Expermattial results show the formation core-shell structure originates from the deposition-growth of Ir atoms at preferentially generated Au nanowires surface. When using as an electrocatalyst towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media, CSNWs show Pt-like ORR electroactivity due to the compositional synergism effect and structural advantages of 1D nanowires, accompanying with excellent durability and extremely enhanced methanol tolerance towards ORR.

Abstract:We report an easy method of using SiO2 as the support and HAuCl4 as the precursor for synthesizing a Au/CoOx/SiO2 catalyst that is highly active in low-temperature CO oxidation. The surface of SiO2 was modified with a small amount of highly dispersed CoOx (6 wt%) before the loading of gold. A 78% conversion of CO was achieved at room temperature and 100% at temperatures above 333 K over the Au/CoOx/SiO2 catalyst in CO oxidation. Compared with Au/SiO2, the existence of CoOx greatly enhances the dispersion of gold nanoparticles in Au/CoOx/SiO2, which is responsible for the excellent catalytic performance.

One-pot synthesis of Au–Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>@SiO<sub>2</sub> core–shell nanoreactors for CO oxidation
