Abstract:MoS2 nanosheets can be used as solid lubricants or additives of lubricating oils to reduce friction and resist wear. However, the atomic scale mechanism still needs to be illustrated. Herein, molecular simulations on the indentation and scratching process of MoS2 monolayer supported by Pt(111) surface were conducted to study the anti-pressure and friction reduction mechanisms of the MoS2 monolayer. Three deformation stages of Pt-supported MoS2 monolayer were found during the indentation process: elastic deformation, plastic deformation and finally, complete rupture. The MoS2 monolayer showed an excellent friction reduction effect at the first two stages, as a result of enhanced load bearing capacity and reduced deformation degree of the substrate. Unlike graphene, rupture of the Pt-supported MoS2 monolayer was related primarily to out-of-plane compression of the monolayer. These results provide a new insight into the relationship between the mechanical properties and lubrication properties of 2D materials.

Abstract:Owing to nano-MoS2's excellent anti-friction and anti-wear properties, nano-MoS2, which can be acted as a nano-additive in lubricating oil or solid lubricant, is believed to have great potential in the lubrication of power machinery and moving parts of spacecraft. The molecular dynamics method was used to construct a rough surface and multi-level asperity structure to simulate the starved lubrication before oil film breakdown, and the lubrication mechanism of MoS2 as nano-additive or directly coated on the textured surface could reduce the friction coefficient and wear was explained from the atomic perspective. Simulations showed that the multilayer MoS2 played a role of load-bearing at light load or low velocity, and slipped into the grooves to repair the surface under heavy load or high velocity. Even if local asperity contact occurs, MoS2 nanoparticles could accelerate the detachment of the initial asperity contact to prevent large-scale adhesion. The MoS2 nanoparticles transformed the pure liquid oil film into a liquid-solid composite oil film, which was more suitable for lubrication under heavy load and high velocity because it increased the contact area, protected the friction surface and prevented asperity contact. The proposed lubrication mechanism contributes to understanding the frictional properties of layered nanomaterials under extreme conditions and provides a reference for further application of MoS2 materials in the field of lubrication.

Modulation of Transverse Stress Field on Atomic-scale Friction

Abstract:To explore the modulation of transverse strain field on friction energy dissipation in atomic scale, in this paper, monolayer to multilayer ultrathin MoS2 specimens were prepared by the mechanical cleavage technique. The layer number of MoS2 was identified with optical microscope, low-frequency Raman and high-frequency Raman. The atomic scale fraction experiments were carried out on monolayer to multilayer MoS2 to explore modulation of lateral stress field on the atomic dimension fraction parameters and fraction energy dissipation. Based on the independent oscillator model, the influences of two important parameters i.e. effective stiffness and surface potential barrier on the atomic-scale friction were investigated and the friction energy dissipation of MoS2 in atomic scale was calculated. Under no strain, when the layer number of MoS2 increased 表面摩擦磨损与润滑 ·188· 表面技术 2020 年 1 月 from monolayer to multilayer, the effective stiffness and surface potential barrier increased from 2.92 N/m to 7.41 N/m and from 0.36 eV to 2.94 eV, respectively. The average frictional force of monolayer MoS2 was the largest, that of bilayer MoS2 was the second, and that of multilayer MoS2 was the smallest. When the strain increased from 0 to 10.6%, the effective stiffness and surface potential barrier of monolayer MoS2 increased from 2.92 N/m to 12.03 N/m and from 0.36 eV to 2.94 eV, respectively. However, the effect of strain field on surface potential barrier modulation was stronger, which leaded to a positive correlation between the relative barrier and the strain. With the increase of the strain field, the friction energy dissipation at atomic scale increased; and when the stress field first acted on MoS2, there was a significant increase in the friction energy dissipation. The friction energy dissipation of monolayer MoS2 increased from 1.3×10–13 J without strain to 1.9×10–12 J with strain of 0.53%. Studying friction energy dissipation not only helps to explore the origin of friction, but also can realize the modulation of frictional energy dissipation. This work can promote the study of atomic-scale energy dissipation and provide a new direction for the modulation of frictional energy dissipation.
Engineering frictional characteristics of MoS2 structure by tuning thickness and morphology- An atomic, electronic structure, and exciton analysis

Abstract:We performed atomic and electron dynamics analysis to study the impact of morphological and thickness changes of a MoS2 system on its tribological properties through a diamond tip. We had considered 4 cases: variable layers (1-4 layers) and number (2-8 indents), radius (12{\AA}, 16{\AA}, 20{\AA}, 24{\AA}), and pattern of indents (0{\deg}, 25{\deg}, 30{\deg}, 35{\deg}, 45{\deg}, 60{\deg}) resulting into 18 subcases. MD results showed changing the radius and number of indents were the most, and number of layers and indents' pattern were the least effective way to tune the frictional characteristics. Ground state ab-initio study demonstrated an increase in the number and radius of indents, raising the number of stretched bonds. Consequently, the volume covered by the HOMO iso-surface increases, and that of LUMO decreases. That makes higher area/volume available to lose/share electrons, resulting in stronger interlocking between layers and tip. And TD-DFT calculation proves the existence of interfacial excitons, resulting in stronger interlocking between the layer's surface and tip despite a contraction in the LUMO iso-surfaces' area/volume. We believe these interlayer excitons result in higher average Z-axis(hence frictional force) reaction forces for the indents number subcases and lower for indents radius subcases as the number and radius of indents increase.

Abstract:Nanoscale friction on two-dimensional (2D) materials is closely associated with their mechanical, electronic and photonic properties, which can be modulated through changing thickness. Here, we investigated the thickness dependent friction on few-layer MoS2, WS2, and WSe2 using atomic force microscope at ambient condition and found two different behavior. When a sharp tip was used, the regular behavior of decreasing friction with increasing thickness was reproduced. However, when a pre-worn and flat-ended tip was used, we observed an abnormal trend: on WS2 and WSe2, friction increased monotonically with thickness, while for MoS2, friction decreased from monolayer to bilayer and then subsequently increased with thickness. As suggested by the density functional theory calculation, we hypothesize that the overall frictional behavior is a competition between the puckering effect and the intrinsic energy corrugation within the compressive region. By varying the relative strength of the puckering effect via changing the tip shape, the dependence of friction on sample thickness can be tuned. Our results also suggest a potential means to measure intrinsic frictional properties of 2D materials with minimum impact from puckering.
Stiffness and atomic-scale friction in superlubricant MoS$_2$ bilayers

Abstract:By using ab-initio-accurate force fields and molecular dynamics simulations we demonstrate that the layer stiffness has profound effects on the superlubricant state of two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures. These are engineered to have identical inter-layer sliding energy surfaces, but layers of different rigidity, so that the effects of the stiffness on the microscopic friction in the superlubricant state can be isolated. A twofold increase in the intra-layer stiffness reduces the friction by approximately a factor six. Most importantly, we find two sliding regimes as a function of the sliding velocity. At low velocity the heat generated by the motion is efficiently exchanged between the layers and the friction is independent on whether the sliding layer is softer or harder than the substrate. In contrast, at high velocity the friction heat flux cannot be exchanged fast enough, and the build up of significant temperature gradients between the layers is observed. In this situation the temperature profile depends on whether the slider is softer than the substrate.

Abstract:In this report, we utilize the heterostructures of monolayer MoS2 and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of organic molecules as a platform to understand how carrier density of nanomaterials affects their friction behaviors. Previous studies on the friction of two-dimensional materials have explored the effect of lattice structures and morphologies. Given the same normal force and scanning speed of the AFM tip, we observe the sliding friction of high-quality n-type monolayer MoS2 could be reduced by SAMs. The friction tunability is attributed to the charge transfer from MoS 2 to SAMs, which modulated the carrier density and hence the carrier-mediated friction behaviors in 2D MoS2. ab initio simulations and nanoscale mapping of work functions support this hypothesis. These SAMs-based heterostructures provide a potential tool to control friction in low-dimensional materials, and also an original perspective on the effect of electron–phonon coupling on friction at nanoscale.

Abstract:Reducing friction and wear is a long-standing concern for machinery. Bulk solid lubricants have been widely adopted to address the tribological challenges at the macroscale, yet their implementation is relatively limited for small-scale applications. Recently, the emergence of two-dimensional (2D) materials brings a new horizon of a range of ultrathin solid lubricants for micro- and nanoscale sliding interfaces. Using ball on-disk friction tests, we found that monolayer MoS2 possessed an outstanding lubrication performance when the normal load was below a threshold, beyond which wear set in. Further scratch tests on monolayer MoS2 showed that this critical normal load was significantly affected by the residual strain in MoS2. As revealed by finite-element simulations, MoS2 failed primarily because of in plane stretching during tribological sliding, and the tensile residual strain would add to the in-plane strain inside MoS2, resulting in a noticeably weaker antiwear performance. This work provides guidelines for optimizing the antiwear performance of 2D materials that are subjected to residual strain.

Abstract:The ultralow friction between atomic layers of hexagonal MoS , an important solid lubricant and additive of lubricating oil, is thought to be responsible for its excellent lubricating performances. However, the quantitative frictional properties between MoS atomic layers have not been directly tested in experiments due to the lack of conventional tools to characterize the frictional properties between 2D atomic layers. Herein, a versatile method for studying the frictional properties between atomic-layered materials is developed by combining the in situ scanning electron microscope technique with a Si nanowire force sensor, and the friction tests on the sliding between atomic-layered materials down to monolayers are reported. The friction tests on the sliding between incommensurate MoS monolayers give a friction coefficient of ≈10 in the regime of superlubricity. The results provide the first direct experimental evidence for superlubricity between MoS atomic layers and open a new route to investigate frictional properties of broad 2D materials.

Abstract:The interlayer friction behavior of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) as crucial solid lubricants has attracted extensive attention in the field of tribology. In this study, the interlayer friction is measured by laterally pushing the MoTe 2 powder on the MoTe 2 substrate with the atomic force microscope (AFM) tip, and density functional theory (DFT) simulations are used to rationalize the experimental results. The experimental results indicate that the friction coefficient of the 1T′-MoTe 2 /1T′-MoTe 2 interface is 2.025 × 10 −4 , which is lower than that of the 2H-MoTe 2 /2H-MoTe 2 interface (3.086 × 10 −4 ), while the friction coefficient of the 1T′-MoTe 2 /2H-MoTe 2 interface is the lowest at 6.875 × 10 −5 . The lower interfacial friction of 1T′-MoTe 2 /1T′-MoTe 2 compared to 2H-MoTe 2 /2H-MoTe 2 interface can be explained by considering the relative magnitudes of the ideal average shear strengths and maximum shear strengths based on the interlayer potential energy. Additionally, the smallest interlayer friction observed at the 1T′-MoTe 2 /2H-MoTe 2 heterojunction is attributed to the weak interlayer electrostatic interaction and reduction in potential energy corrugation caused by the incommensurate contact. This work suggests that MoTe 2 has comparable interlayer friction properties to MoS 2 and is expected to reduce interlayer friction in the future by inducing the 2H-1T′ phase transition.

Abstract:The tribological properties of solid lubricants such as graphite and the metal dichalcogenides MX2 (where M is molybdenum or tungsten and X is sulphur or selenium)1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13 are of technological interest for reducing wear in circumstances where liquid lubricants are impractical, such as in space technology, ultra-high vacuum or automotive transport. These materials are characterized by weak interatomic interactions (van der Waals forces) between their layered structures, allowing easy, low-strength shearing14,15. Although these materials exhibit excellent friction and wear resistance and extended lifetime in vacuum, their tribological properties remain poor in the presence of humidity or oxygen16,17,18,19, thereby limiting their technological applications in the Earth's atmosphere. But using MX2 in the form of isolated inorganic fullerene-like hollow nanoparticles similar to carbon fullerenes and nanotubes can improve its performance1. Here we show that thin films of hollow MoS2 nanoparticles, deposited by a localized high-pressure arc discharge method, exhibit ultra-low friction (an order of magnitude lower than for sputtered MoS2 thin films) and wear in nitrogen and 45% humidity. We attribute this ‘dry’ behaviour in humid environments to the presence of curved S–Mo–S planes that prevent oxidation and preserve the layered structure.

Abstract:We synthesized MoxW1−xS2 alloy by chemical vapor deposition. Raman characterization results showed that the sample is a monolayer with a special structure which transforms from MoS2 to WS2. Atomic force microscopy measurements suggested that the friction force decreases from MoS2 region to WS2 region. Molecular dynamics simulations verified that interfacial interaction is the determining factor resulting in the variation in the friction properties of monolayer MoxW1−xS2. Green’s function calculations demonstrated that phonons are excited at both washboard frequency and its harmonics. Besides, the number and total energy of the excited phonons were calculated. The decreasing of the number and total energy of the excited phonons with the weakening interfacial interaction, leading to the decreasing dissipated energy and reduced friction force.

Abstract:Despite extensive research on the tribological properties of MoS2, the frictional characteristics of other members of the transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) family have remained relatively unexplored. To understand the effect of the chalcogen on the tribological behavior of these materials and gain broader general insights into the factors controlling friction at the nanoscale, we compared the friction force behavior for a nanoscale single asperity sliding on MoS2, MoSe2, and MoTe2 in both bulk and monolayer forms through a combination of atomic force microscopy experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. Experiments and simulations showed that, under otherwise identical conditions, MoS2 has the highest friction among these materials and MoTe2 has the lowest. Simulations complemented by theoretical analysis based on the Prandtl–Tomlinson model revealed that the observed friction contrast between the TMDs was attributable to their lattice constants, which differed depending on the chalcogen. While the corrugation amplitudes of the energy landscapes are similar for all three materials, larger lattice constants permit the tip to slide more easily across correspondingly wider saddle points in the potential energy landscape. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have a wide range of applications in the field of molecular-level solid lubrication due to their ultrahigh mechanical strength and extremely low friction properties at the nanoscale. In this work, we investigated the interlayer friction properties of four different heterostructures, namely, graphene/MoS 2 , graphene/NbSe 2 , α -tellurene/MoS 2 and α -tellurene/NbSe 2 , using a molecular dynamics (MD) method. The effects of a series of influencing factors on the interlayer friction were investigated. The results show that for the four heterostructures, the influence laws of layer number, temperature, and normal load on interlayer friction show consistency. The twist angle can effectively regulate the interlayer friction of these 2D materials, but the superlubricity phenomenon cannot occur for α -Te/MoS 2 and α -Te/NbSe 2 systems. Furthermore, we address the origin of friction in detail, emphasizing the contribution of edge pinning and interface sliding resistance to the frictional force of the heterostructure. The friction decreases with increasing temperature and sliding speed due to the reduction in the interlayer adhesion force. The present findings provide a deep understanding of friction control and contribute much to the design of robust 2D superlubricity systems.

Abstract:The tribological behavior of the defective MoS 2 sheet has been investigated under different normal loads by molecular dynamics simulations. Five typical vacancy defects have been introduced to estimate the anti-friction and anti-wear properties of defective MoS 2 sheets. The existence of vacancy defects increases the local friction of the MoS 2 sheet and accelerates wear failure. The degree of vacancy defect influence on the anti-friction and anti-wear properties of MoS 2 is as follows: V Mo < V S < V S2 < V MoS3 < V MoS6 . The atomic frictional deviation of the a-C tip and the potential energy surfaces of the defective MoS 2 sheet have been analyzed to reveal the potential mechanisms of the atomic pinning effect. The enhancements of atomic pinning and energy barrier induced by vacancy defects are the main contributions for the increased local friction in the MoS 2 sheet. The S atomic vacancies in the bottom S layer have been further considered. The top layer S atom tends to transfer and fill the bottom S vacancy under a certain normal load of 130nN. The transformation of vacancy defect further increases the surface friction of defective MoS 2 sheets.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a booming layered two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial, has gain intensive interests for its remarkable physical properties. In this work, the friction characteristics of suspended MoS2 are systematically investigated with atomic force microscopy (AFM). The friction on the suspended MoS2 is much larger than that on the supported MoS2 because of the softening bending rigidity and easier formation of puckering at the AFM tip MoS2 contact interface, and the difference would increases with the applied load. Similar to the supported MoS2, the friction on the suspended MoS2 also decreases with the increasing layers because of the enhanced bending rigidity. The friction on the suspended MoS2 is relatively insensitive to the shapes of holes below but sensitive to the dimensions. Abstract:The ultralow friction of two-dimensional (2D) materials, commonly referred to as superlubricity, has been associated with Moire ' superlattices (MSLs). While MSLs have been shown to play a crucial role in achieving superlubricity, the long-standing challenge of achieving superlubricity in engineering has been attributed to surface roughness, which tends to destroy MSLs. Here, we show via molecular dynamics simulations that MSLs alone are not capable of capturing the friction behavior of a multilayer-graphene-coated substrate where similar MSLs persist in spite of significant changes in friction as the graphene coating thickness increases. To resolve this problem, a deformation coupled contact pattern is constructed to describe the spatial distribution of the atomic contact distance. It is shown that as the graphene thickness increases, the interfacial contact distance is determined by a competition between increased interfacial MSLs interactions and reduced out-of-plane deformation of the surface. A frictional Fourier transform model is further proposed to distinguish between intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to friction, with results showing that thicker graphene coatings exhibit lower intrinsic friction and higher sliding stability. These results shed light on the origin of interfacial superlubricity in 2D materials and may guide related applications in engineering.
