We present an exhaustive exploration of cutting-edge devices birthed from this concept, such as the omnithermal cloaking, concentrating, and rotating apparatuses. As underscored by finite-element simulations and bolstered by experimental insights, these devices signify a pioneering horizon in thermal management. In this chapter, we endeavor not only to clarify the integration of these fundamental heat transfer modes within transformation omnithermotics but also to spotlight the vast potential it unlocks for avant-garde thermal management techniques.

Abstract:For macroscopically manipulating heat flow at will, thermal metamaterials have opened a practical way, which possesses a single function, such as either cloaking or concentrating the flow of heat even though environmental temperature varies. By developing a theory of transformation heat transfer for multiple functions, here we introduce the concept of intelligent thermal metamaterials with a dual function, which is in contrast to the existing thermal metamaterials with single functions. By assembling homogeneous isotropic materials and shape-memory alloys, we experimentally fabricate a kind of intelligent thermal metamaterials, which can automatically change from a cloak (or concentrator) to a concentrator (or cloak) when the environmental temperature changes. This work paves an efficient way for a controllable gradient of heat, and also provides guidance both for arbitrarily manipulating the flow of heat and for efficiently designing similar intelligent metamaterials in other fields.

Abstract:Since the advent of transformation optics and scattering cancelling technology, a plethora of unprecedented metamaterials, especially invisibility cloaks, have been successfully demonstrated in various communities, e.g., optics, acoustics, elastic mechanics, dc electric field, dc magnetic field, and thermotics. A long-held captivation is that transformation-optic metamaterials of anisotropic or noncentrosymmetric geometry (e.g., ellipsoids) commonly come along with parameter approximation/simplification or directional functions. Here, a synthetic paradigm with strictly full parameters and omnidirectionality is reported simultaneously to address this long-held issue for molding heat flow and experimentally demonstrate a series of noncentrosymmetric thermal metadevices. It changes the usual perception that transformation thermotic/dc/acoustic metamaterials are just a direct and simplified derivatives of the transformation-optic counterpart. Instead, the proposed methodology solves an intriguingly important and challenging problem that is not possibly achievable for transformation-optic metamaterials. The approach is rigorous, exact, robust, and yet elegantly facile, which may open a new avenue to manipulating the Laplacian and wave-dynamic fields in ways previously inconceivable.
Nonlinear Transformation Thermotics: from Switchable Thermal Cloaks to Macro Thermal Diodes

Abstract:The macroscopic control of ubiquitous heat flow remains poorly explored due to the lack of a fundamental theoretical method. Here, by establishing temperature-dependent transformation thermotics for treating materials whose conductivity depends on temperature, we show analytical and simulation evidence for switchable thermal cloaking and a macroscopic thermal diode based on the cloaking. The latter allows heat flow in one direction but prohibits the flow in the opposite direction, which is also confirmed by our experiments. Our results suggest that the temperature-dependent transformation thermotics could be a fundamental theoretical method for achieving macroscopic heat rectification, and provide guidance both for macroscopic control of heat flow and for the design of the counterparts of switchable thermal cloaks or macroscopic thermal diodes in other fields like seismology, acoustics, electromagnetics, or matter waves.

Abstract:Fata Morgana or Mirage phenomena have long been captivated as optical illusions, which actually relies on gradient-density air or vapor. Man-made optical illusions have witnessed significant progress by resorting to artificially structured metamaterials. Nevertheless, two long-standing challenges remain formidable: first, exotic parameters (negative or less than unity) become inevitable; second, the signature of original object is altered to that of a virtual counterpart. It is thus not able to address the holy grail of illusion per se, since a single virtual object still exposes the location. In this study, those problems are successfully addressed in a particular setupillusion thermotics, which identically mimics the exterior thermal behavior of an equivalent reference and splits the interior original heat source into many virtual signatures. A general paradigm to design thermal illusion metadevices is proposed to manipulate thermal conduction, and empower robust simultaneous functions of moving, shaping, rotating, and splitting heat sources of arbitrary cross sections. The temperature profile inside the thermal metadevice can mislead the awareness of the real location, shape, size, and number of the actual heat sources. The present concept may trigger unprecedented development in other physical fields to realize multiple functionalized illusions in optics, electromagnetics, etc.
Thermal Metamaterial for Convergent Transfer of Conductive Heat with High Efficiency

Abstract:It is crucially important to focus conductive heat in an efficient way, which has received much attention in energy science (say, solar cells), but is still far from being satisfactory due to the diffusive (divergent) nature of the heat. By developing a theory with hybrid transformations (rotation and stretch-compression), here we provide theoretical and experimental evidences for a type of thermal metamaterial called thermal converger. The converger is capable of convergently conducting heat in contrast to the known divergent behavior of heat diffusion, thus yielding a large heating region with high temperatures close to the heat source (high efficiency). The thermal converger further allows us to design a thermal grating—a thermal counterpart of optical grating. This work has relevance to heat focus with high efficiency, and it offers guidance both for efficient heat transfer and for designing thermal-converger-like metamaterials in other fields, such as electrics/magnetics, electromagnetics/optics, acoustics, and particle diffusion.

Abstract:Thermal management, with a twist: The function of a traditional thermal metamaterial is predetermined once the structure is fixed, and it is difficult to tune thermal conductivities $i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}n$ $s\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}t\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}u$. This work proposes a doublet thermal metadevice that enables multiple functions by mechanically rotating identical singlet configurations. The doublet device consists of two conductive materials in a stacked layout with a sort of curved chessboard structure, so that its function can be reconfigured by adjusting the angular displacement of the moving parts. Simulations show that a single device can serve as a thermal cloak, concentrator, or rotator, or can appear transparent.

Abstract:Achieving effective control of thermal and mechanical distributions has been a long-standing goal, and metamaterials have emerged as a crucial tool for customizing functional structures to manipulate these physical fields. However, existing design paradigms do not apply to thermal-mechanical metamaterials that operate on thermal and mechanical fields simultaneously and independently. First, Due to the different geometric requirements imposed by the thermal and mechanical fields on the unit cells, there is a conflict between functional coupling and design coupling, which limits the design of thermal-mechanical metamaterials. Second, the fact that continuum mechanical equations do not remain invariant under general coordinate transformations hinders the application of conventional theories. Additionally, balancing minimal design costs, manufacturability, and optimal functionality remains a significant challenge. Here, we propose a global data-driven design method using Bayesian hyperparameter optimization. This method creates thermal-mechanical metamaterials from a large, pre-computed unit cell database. Our flexible method allows designing thermal-mechanical metamaterials with various functional combinations (e.g., cloaks, concentrators, and rotators) and shapes. Compared to traditional solutions, this approach balances manufacturability and functionality while offering unparalleled universality and low design costs. Experimental measurements validate the effectiveness of our method. Our approach can rapidly respond to new design scenarios and address design challenges related to the multi-physical effects.

Abstract:Controlling heat transfer with artificial functional materials has been a promising route towards the efficient and smart utilization of thermal energy in modern society. At the macroscopic scale, thermal metamaterials have demonstrated versatile functionalities in manipulating thermal conduction. One major method is the effective medium theory, which provides a reliable approximation for the material parameters of the composite. Although most of thermal metamaterials use static components, recent devices with integrated moving parts are attracting great interest thanks to their high efficiency and flexibility. However, the effective medium theory for thermal scattering off such devices has not been well established, due to the fundamental difference between thermal convection and conduction. Here, we provide a thorough study on heat transfer through mechanically rotating structures. It is shown that the effective thermal conductivity of a rotating structure can be rigorously described in a complex plane. The analytical expressions of the effective thermal conductivity for structures with rotating multiple layers are formulated, which explicitly capture their influences on the surrounding temperature field. We validate the theory and numerically demonstrate the rotated and unrotated temperature distributions generated around a single structure. our theory is expected to become a design recipe for novel thermal metamaterials and meta-devices. Abstract:For manipulating heat flow efficiently, recently we established a theory of temperature-dependent transformation thermotics which holds for steady-state cases. Here, we develop the theory to unsteady-state cases by considering the generalized Fourier's law for transient thermal conduction. As a result, we are allowed to propose a new class of intelligent thermal metamaterial — switchable concentrator, which is made of inhomogeneous anisotropic materials. When environmental temperature is below or above a critical value, the concentrator is automatically switched on, namely, it helps to focus heat flux in a specific region. However, the focusing does not affect the distribution pattern of temperature outside the concentrator. We also perform finite-element simulations to confirm the switching effect according to the effective medium theory by assembling homogeneous isotropic materials, which bring more convenience for experimental fabrication than inhomogeneous anisotropic materials. This work may help to figure out new intelligent thermal devices, which provide more flexibility in controlling heat flow, and it may also be useful in other fields that are sensitive to temperature gradient, such as the Seebeck effect.

Abstract:Any object with nonzero temperature emits thermal radiation described by the Stefan-Boltzmann law, and hence, thermal conduction is always accompanied by thermal radiation. Although a transformation theory has been proposed to control thermal conduction, a transformation theory has not yet been put forward to manipulate thermal radiation, let alone the thermal coupling between radiation and conduction (herein called multithermotics). To solve the problem, we establish the theory of transformation multithermotics to control radiation and conduction simultaneously. As model applications, we also design three devices with functions of cloaking, concentrating, and rotating. These devices are confirmed by transient finite-element simulations. As experimental suggestions, we further design transformation media with two homogeneous and isotropic materials to simplify fabrication. Our results provide general hints to multithermal management, and have potential applications in infrared camouflaging, solar-energy utilizing, etc.

Abstract:Transparency and cloaking are two typical functions of thermal metamaterials that have attracted intensive research interest. However, two restrictions remain to be solved. The first one is that existing studies considered only one or two modes of heat transfer, which may not be consistent with practical conditions because conduction, radiation, and convection often coexist. The second one is that transparency and cloaking cannot be switched between at will. To solve these problems, we propose an effective medium theory to handle conductive, radiative, and convective (herein called omnithermal) processes simultaneously, which is based on the Fourier law, the Rosseland diffusion approximation, and the Darcy law. With the present theory, we further design an omnithermal metamaterial switchable between transparency and cloaking, which results from the nonlinear properties of radiation and convection. Finite-element simulations indicate that our scheme is robust under different boundary conditions. These results have potential applications such as in thermal camouflage, nonlinear thermotics, and intelligent thermotics.

Abstract:Multithermal metamaterials are more practical to control thermal energy because there are three basic modes of thermal transport in nature. However, existing theories for multithermotics, such as the transformation theory and effective medium theory, are limited to complicated parameters or regular shapes. To solve the problem, we apply the thermal uniqueness theorem together with the heat flux conservation to design multithermal metamaterials including invisible cloaks and sensors. Multithermotics refers to the combination of conduction and radiation, which are described by the Fourier law and the Rosseland diffusion approximation, respectively. The present scheme can simplify parameters despite complex shapes, which only requires simple layered structures. We further perform finite-element simulations with different shapes to confirm the desired effects. Abstract:Heat transportation is one of the most ubiquitous phenomenon in the mother nature. Manipulating heat flow at will is of tremendous value in industry, civil life and even military. It would be a common sense that in different materials thermal properties are different. According to this knowledge people may design thermal materials to control heat conduction. One of the most common and successful example is blanket, which has been invented for thousands of years to keep us warm in cold days and keep icecream cool in summer. However, those great inventions are not powerful enough to manipulate heat flow at will. So there are still a lot of demands for designing the so-called metamaterials which have special properties that should not exist in nature.In 2006, Leonhardt and Pendry's research group (Pendry, Schurig and Smith) independently proposed a type of optical metamaterial which is also called invisible cloak. This device is well known for bending light around an object to make it invisible. Such a significant progress soon enlightened a lot of scientists in different aspects since it offers a powerful approach to design metamaterials. The principle of invisible cloak, which is concluded as transformation optics has been applied to light waves, acoustic, seismic, elastic waves, hydrodynamics and even matter waves as they all satisfy with wave equation.Although the conduction equation which governs the process of heat conduction is totally different from wave equation, from 2008 to 2012, Fan's group and Guenneau's group established the theoretical system of transformation thermotics. Since then, many thermal metamaterials with novel thermal properties have been figured out. Therefore, a boom in transformation thermotics and thermal metamaterials has begun.In this article, we will introduce some most recent achievements in this field, including novel thermal devices, simplified experimental method, macro thermal diode based on temperature dependent transformation thermotics, and the important role that soft matters play in the experimental confirmations of thermal metamaterials.These works pave the developments in transformation mapping theory and can surely inspire more designs of thermal metamaterials. What is more, some approaches proposed in this article provide more flexibility in controlling heat flow, and it may also be useful in other fields that are sensitive to temperature gradient, such as the Seebeck effect and many other domains where transformation theory is valid.

Abstract:AbstractIn this Chapter, we embark on an exploration of the intricacies of heat conduction, primarily delving into the transformation thermotics and the effective medium theory. Beginning with the foundational Fourier’s law of heat conduction, an intriguing observation is the form invariance of the associated equations under arbitrary coordinate transformations. This symmetry elucidates a novel method for orchestrating the temperature field and heat flux dynamics. To illustrate the practical implications and operationalizability of the thermal transformation, we conceptualized and implemented a thermal cloak. It should be noted, however, that the parameters projected theoretically often manifest as inhomogeneous and anisotropic, posing considerable challenges for tangible synthesis. A viable approach to circumnavigate these challenges is to pivot the focus towards the thermally effective medium theory. In the ensuing sections, we will delve into a systematic exposition of the effective medium theory, subsequently crafting functional structures illuminated by three distinct frameworks: linear theory, wherein the thermal conductivity remains unaffected by temperature variations, nonlinear theory, and the theory of heat sources.

Abstract:AbstractTemperature-dependent (nonlinear) transformation thermotics provides a powerful tool for designing multifunctional, switchable, or intelligent metamaterials in diffusion systems. However, its extension to multiphysics remains studied, in which the temperature dependence of intrinsic parameters is ubiquitous. Here, we theoretically establish a temperature-dependent transformation method for controlling multiphysics. Taking thermoelectric transport as a typical case, we prove the form invariance of its temperature-dependent governing equations and formulate the corresponding transformation rules. Our finite-element simulations demonstrate robust thermoelectric cloaking, concentrating, and rotating performance in temperature-dependent backgrounds. We further design two practical applications with temperature-dependent transformation: an ambient-responsive cloak-concentrator thermoelectric device that can switch between cloaking and concentrating; an improved thermoelectric cloak with nearly-thermostat performance inside. Our theoretical frameworks and application designs may provide guidance for efficiently controlling temperature-related multiphysics and enlighten subsequent intelligent multiphysical metamaterial research.

Abstract:Extended from its electromagnetic counterpart [1,2], transformation thermodynamics applied to thermal conduction equations can map a virtual geometry into a physical thermal medium, realizing the manipulation of heat flux with almost arbitrarily desired diffusion paths, which provides unprecedented opportunities to create thermal devices unconceivable or deemed impossible before [3,4]. In this talk we report our recent work on manipulation of transient heat flux employing this technique and showed two thermal devices: a heat flux cloak and an efficient plate heater. In the cloaking device we will show that heat flux can be guided by a transformed medium to flow around a vacuum obstacle and restore its diffusion direction as if nothing inhomogeneous exists in their trajectories [5]. In the second experiment we design an efficient plate heater that can transiently achieve a large surface of uniform temperature powered by a small thermal source [6]. As opposed to the traditional approach of relying on the deployment of a resistor network, our approach fully takes advantage of an advanced functional material system to guide the heat flux to achieve the desired temperature heating profile. Our research results are good examples of the powerful application of coordinate transformation on wave/flux manipulation and may help to broaden research in acquiring extraordinary ways to control and utilize heat energy or configure novel heat devices.

Abstract:Conduction and convection are two fundamental methods of heat transfer, which are generally considered independent. We manage to unify them by coining a complex thermal conductivity whose real and imaginary parts are related to conduction and convection, respectively. Accordingly, the conduction-convection process with thermal waves is dominated by the complex conduction equation, thus called complex thermotics herein. To go further, we establish the theory of transformation complex thermotics by proving the form-invariance of the complex conduction equation and deriving the transformation principle of complex thermal conductivities. As model applications, we design three devices with functions of cloaking, concentrating, and rotating thermal waves. Moreover, experimental demonstration is suggested with a porous medium whose effective complex thermal conductivity is calculated with the method of weighted average.
