Abstract:This chapter gives a study on straight domino-resonator WPT systems which are typical multi-resonator systems with a number of relay resonators. With additional relay resonators, higher power transfer efficiency can be achieved. Moreover, this study shows that relay resonators form multiple power delivery paths. A power-path analysis method is introduced which can be applied to arbitrary multi-resonator WPT systems.
Precise General Modeling of Windings for Wireless Power Transfer

Abstract:Windings are usually modeled as an inductor in series with a resistor in wireless power transfer systems. Thereby, the parasitic capacitance and dielectric losses are neglected. It is accurate enough for low-frequency scenarios. However, a higher operation frequency could be expected in the near future as the development of high-frequency devices. A distributed model of windings for wireless power transfer is studied in this paper. The model, considering the parasitic effects of turn-to-turn capacitance and dielectric losses, is more accurate in predicting the high-frequency performance of windings. Practical measurements are provided to verify the model.
Analytical Modeling of Resonant Converters in Frequency Domain for Wireless Power Transfer: Continuous Current Mode (CCM) Operation

Abstract:The major topology for wireless power transfer is resonant converters, which use fundamental harmonic approximation as a general analysis method. The accuracy of fundamental harmonic approximation (FHA) is unsatisfactory in some wireless power transfer applications, as the current has distortions due to the non-linear diode-bridge rectifier. Some frequency-domain models also consider harmonics beside fundamental component and indeed have a higher resolution. However, due to the difficulty of modeling the non-linear rectifier, most models are oversimplified by assuming a voltage source on the output to eliminate the rectifier. Moreover, the value of the voltage source is often treated as a fixed given number, which is not true for a resistive load. To cover a general case, this paper proposes a frequency-domain analytical model for resonant converters in continuous current mode (CCM) with the capability of considering any load and source situations in kHz frequency range. In terms of computation complexity, the proposed model only involves matrix operation (first-order). A simple algorithm has been chosen to demonstrate the fast convergency and high accuracy of the proposed model. The main findings are verified by the comparison between the theoretical calculation, time-domain simulation and experimental results, where the estimation of output power has 10% improvement than the FHA method.
Modeling a current source push-pull resonant converter for loosely coupled power transfer systems

Abstract:In this paper, the generalized model of an inductively coupled power transfer (ICPT) system, which could transfer power efficiently, is built to predict the output power and voltage of the system. The basic concept and structure of ICPT systems is described and a current source push-pull resonant converter for ICPT is presented, and some characteristics of the ICPT system are discussed. The equivalent circuit model is built with mutual inductance concept. Based on this model, equations are obtained to calculate the output power, voltage and resonant frequency, which are verified by experimental results. A brief loss analysis based on Steinmetz equation is given to explain the difference between the predicted and measured values, which are verified by experimental results to make the model more accurate.

Abstract:Fundamental harmonic approximation (FHA) is a general analysis method for diode-bridge rectifier in resonant converters. However, the accuracy of FHA is low in some wireless power transfer (WPT) applications, as the current has distortions due to different compensation networks. Also, there are researches on increasing the power density of resonant converters by injecting third harmonic. In such case, FHA no longer holds true. As the diode-bridge rectifier is a well-known harmonic source, numerous modeling methods for Grid connected AC/DC converters have been addressed. However, most of them have all kinds of limitations and cannot be applied to resonant converter directly. This paper proposes a frequency-domain analytical model for resonant converters in CCM, considering any load and source situation. The advantage of the proposed model is a truly first order solution and a general model for all resonant converters. Two test systems have been constructed in simulation and calculation to verify the proposed model. One is a resonant converter with both fundamental and third harmonic components, the other one is an LCC compensated wireless charger.

Abstract:The power transfer capability of a wireless power transfer (WPT) system is largely limited by its coupling range. The transferred power of a series-series (SS) compensated WPT system will usually decrease when the winding coupling increases. Therefore, it is difficult to design a WPT system which can output the desired amount of power in a large coupling range under practical constraints such as voltage and current limits. This paper proposes a reconfigurable resonant topology based on a split transmitting winding, which can select different connection schemes and operation modes for different winding position ranges. The proposed reconfigurable resonant topology reuses various parts of the resonator in different modes, so that the system has five operation modes to cover a wide winding position range meeting the given load and VA requirements while only using two windings (both in the primary side). Simulation and experimental results are given to verify the proposed reconfigurable resonant topology.

Abstract:The wireless power transfer characteristics of system architectures with single transmitter and multiple receiver coils are investigated. With multiple receivers in a limited space, couplings within receivers occur. Effective resonant frequency is changed due to such couplings, the desired working region should be adjusted accordingly. An equivalent circuit model is developed to describe the system with a single receiver, and extended to describe the system with two receivers. The circuit model yields transfer frequency responses that are in good agreement with experimental measurements over a range of frequencies that span the resonance. In a multi-receiver system, a method for tracking frequency shifts or retuning the lumped capacitance so as to maximise the efficiency is proposed. The simulation and experimental results well agree with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, a unified equivalent circuitmodel which can simplify the design and analysis of a family of high-voltage (HV) generation architectures based on the series-parallel (LCC) resonant converter is proposed. First, four HV generation architectures are reviewed in terms of the modularization level of HV transformers and rectifiers. Next, the steady-state, unified equivalent resistor and capacitor (RC) model that can be easily embedded into the resonant tank to replace the complex HV transformers and rectifiers is derived. The generic model can be applied to the HV generators with different architectures, different voltage multiplier topologies, stage, and polarities number. Further analysis of the power factor of the resonant tank, the voltage gain of HV generators, and electrical stresses of power components is achieved with the derived equivalent circuit model. The analysis reveals the inherent circuit properties among HV generators with different configurations. Subsequently, a comprehensive design methodology considering the power factor, conduction angle, and quality factor is presented, which leads to low electrical stresses on the components and high efficiency. Furthermore, the parameter selection constraint based on the power factor, conduction angle, and quality factor is derived, which can ensure the effective design outputs. Finally, the proposed unified equivalent model and comprehensive design methodology are validated by the experimental results of a 250 V input, 20 kV output 500 W HV generator hardware prototype with distributed transformers and voltage multipliers.

The transferred power and energy efficiency are presented through derivations of equations based on equivalent circuit model, which is validated against simulation results using Matlab SIMULINK and Ansoft Maxwell. The mutual coupling between receivers significantly affects the system resonant frequency and transmission performance, the power distribution between multiple receiver coils are addressed.

Abstract:Resonant converters are periodic time-varying system, one of whose distinctive features is the sideband effect. To be specific, when a small-signal perturbation is injected into the converter, a series of sideband frequency components will occur. The two sideband frequency components around the switching frequency determine the small-signal response of the resonant tank if it has sufficient band-pass filtering. Using complex Fourier series, the relationship between different frequency components can be described with a series of gains. This article derives all the necessary transfer functions between different frequencies for resonant converters. Combining them together forms a general small-signal model of resonant converters. There are multiple frequency components, i.e., the perturbation frequency and two sideband frequencies in this model, hence the name multifrequency model. Two kinds of inverters, i.e., the full-bridge and half-bridge structure, and three modulation methods, i.e., the switching frequency control, the duty-cycle control, and the input voltage control are considered in this article. The experimental results verify the validity of the proposed model.

Abstract:The numerical model and method for the distributed parameters and resonant frequency of a plane spiral coil are proposed.Based on the general electromagnetic field theory,the model and method of the distributed parameters are developed,and the equivalent circuit model of the whole coil is abstracted.From the mentioned work,the impedance characteristics of a prototype resonant coil are analyzed and the resonant frequency is ensured.The results show that the proposed method is valid.

Abstract:To better understand the resonance modes caused by the interelement couplings in the building block of metamaterials, we propose a circuit model for the hybrid resonance modes of paired split ring resonators. The model identifies the electromagnetic coupling between the paired rings by electric and magnetic coupling networks and well explains the variation of hybrid resonance modes with respect to the distance and the twist angle between the rings. Abstract:Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in circular resonators are investigated. Conformal transformation is used to transform circular resonators to more simplified structures. The principle of transverse resonance is utilized to calculate the resonant frequencies. Transmission line theory is applied to calculate the fields of electromagnetic waves. The resonant frequencies and field distributions in different high-Q resonators, including small resonators of several micrometers and large resonators of several millimeters in diameters, are investigated. The method provides a more efficient way to analyze the devices incorporating circular resonators.

Abstract:ABSTRACT:Models of multiphase induction machines (MPIM) under the natural reference frame are complicated due to the coupling, therefore, analysis of MPIM is difficult when using these models. A general model of MPIM under a multi-dimensiondq reference frame which consists of several orthogonaldq-planes was presented: expressions for the parameters calculation of MPIM taking account of all space harmonics were derived; a special real matrix was found to diagonalize these parameters, and a transmission based on this matrix was established accordingly to transform variables to this multi-dimensiondq reference frame. This model is simple and easy to use because of the elimination of coupling between different stator phases and the one between different rotor loops. It is suitable for analyzing MPIM supplied by different kind of sources, like asymmetrical supplies, harmonic injection, square voltages, etc. The optimization method of this model for different applications was given. Simulation and experimental results of a 9-phase MPIM under square voltage source show great agreement with each other, which verifies the validity of the proposed model and its optimization method.

Abstract:In wireless power transfer (WPT) applications, it is usually desired to transfer full power from the transmitter to the receiver in a position range as large as possible. However, the full-power operation range of a WPT system is typically designed for a small position range. This article proposes a reconfigurable resonant topology adopting the splitting coil structure in both the primary and secondary sides. The proposed reconfigurable resonant topology can output high power when the air gap varies in a wide range. Simulation and experimental results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed reconfigurable resonant topology can output full power in a large coupling range without significantly increasing the VA rating of the system. The measured dc–dc efficiency of the 3.3-kW prototype in an air gap range of 95–215 mm is 92%–95%.

Abstract:Wireless power transfer, known as witricity, has become a topical issue for academicians and engineers alike since the pioneering work of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) research group based on the well-known principle that the electromagnetic coupling of two systems with the same resonant frequency is strongest. This paper presents a model and method to calculate the resonant frequency of planar spirals for wireless power transfers based on equivalent circuit model and three-dimensional finite element analysis. The numerical results on a prototype resonator as reported validate the feasibility and advantages of the proposed approach.
Multimodal Resonance in Strongly Coupled Inductor Arrays

Abstract:Magnetic resonance coupling (MRC) is widely used for wireless power transfer (WPT) applications, but little work has explored how MRC phenomena could be exploited for sensing applications. This paper introduces, validates and evaluates the unique multi-resonant phenomena predicted by circuit theory for over-coupled inductive arrays, and presents eigen-formulae for calculating resonant frequencies and voltage modes within passively excited arrays. Finite-element simulations and experimental results demonstrate the validity of the multi-modal resonant principles for strongly-coupled inductor arrays. The results confirm the distinctive multi-modal resonant frequencies these arrays exhibit, corresponding to the specific magnetic excitation "modes" (comparable to vibrational modes in multi-degree-of-freedom systems). The theoretical and finite element models presented offer a framework for designing and optimizing novel inductive sensing arrays, capitalizing on the unique resonant effects of over-coupling and exploiting their potential magnetic field shaping.

Abstract:Coaxial coil topology is used as the transfer medium in traditional MCR-WPT (Magnetic Coupled Resonant Wireless Power Transfer) systems to improve the transfer characteristics. The intermediate coils are added to extend the transmission distance, whose positions are critical. This paper focuses on the optimal intermediate coil positions for an MCR-WPT system with four coaxial planar circular spiral coils. By modeling the MCR-WPT system, the mathematical expression of the self-inductance and the mutual inductance are used to calculate the load power of the MCR-WPT system, which is composed of four planar circular spiral coaxial coils, and using MATLAB. The optimal distance ratio between the adjacent coils for maximizing the power of load is proposed. Furthermore, the experiments are implemented from the network analyzer and the experimental platform. In the platform, the load power is measured at the different intermediate coil positions, and the optimal position at which the load power is maximized is found. Both experimental results obtained by the network analyzer and the experimental platform have validated the theoretical and simulation results and provided the correctness of the suggested ratios.

A Simplified Dynamical Model for Tuned Wireless Power Transfer Systems

Abstract:Dynamical models of wireless power transfer (WPT) systems are of primary importance for the dynamical behavior studies and controller design. However, the existing dynamical models usually suffer from high orders and complicated forms due to the complex nature of the coupled resonances and switched-mode power converters in WPT systems. This letter finds that a well-tuned WPT system can be accurately described by a much simpler dynamical model. Specifically, at the tuned condition, the existing dynamical model can be decomposed into two parts. One is controllable and the other one is uncontrollable. The former should be considered in the modeling while the latter can be ignored because it always exponentially converges to zero. For illustration, the recently proposed zero-voltage-switching full-bridge pulse-density modulation WPT system is modeled as an example since such a system can efficiently operate at the tuned condition with soft switching and control capabilities. The derived model was verified in experiments by time-domain and frequency-domain responses.

Abstract:Transfer power and efficiency of wireless power transfer (WPT) systems are limited by the quality factor and coupling coefficient of the transmitting (Tx) coil and receiving (Rx) coil. Getting rid of compensation circuits, self-resonant coils have simple structure, high system reliability, high quality factor and high power level, making it a promising candidate for WPT applications. In modeling and computation of self-resonant coils, the results derived from the transmission line theory have obvious errors, and the finite element simulation takes a long computing time. For obtaining accurate results and achieving fast computation, a partial-element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method is applied to calculate the self-resonant frequency (SRF) and the current distribution of helical coils. To validate the accuracy of the proposed model, some prototypes were simulated and measured. The theoretical calculation predications are in great agreements with the simulation and measurement results. The magnetic coupling model between Tx and Rx is also established using PEEC method and a novel design guideline of self-resonant helical coils is proposed. Furthermore, a WPT system with 6.78 MHz self-resonant helical coils was designed, fabricated and tested for a high-efficiency mid-range energy transfer. It was used to drive a 5W load wirelessly as a demonstration to validate the feasibility of the proposed system in practical applications.
