Abstract:The online automatic monitoring system of noise is a trend and a final goal of noise monitoring in China.The Information Center of Harbin Environmental Protection Bureau studied this subject due to the deficiency of the online automatic monitoring system of noise in China.The structure of the system and the design of the all-weather control were introduced.Harbin,the capital of Heilongjiang Province,was selected as an experimental unit.The 216 networks of the area environmental noise in 2003 were optimized by mathematical statistic method to achieve optimized sites.The 26 optimized sites were monitored automatically,and the monitoring data were compared with those of area network in 2004.The results indicated that the difference between the results of the equivalent sound level and standard deviation measured by optimization method and network method were all less than 1 dB(A),and there was no significant difference between these two methods.But,considering the effect of the urban development and the characteristics of noise,it is necessary to combine these two methods and add the unfixed monitoring sites.
Investigation On The Airport Noise Annoyance Threshold By Socio-Acoustic Surveys

Abstract:Surveys of community annoyance induced by airport noise exposure was carried out around Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport. The status quo of airport noise pollution was measured. The interpolation was used to estimate the weighted effective continuous perceived noise level ((L) over bar WEPCN) in different areas around the airport, and the map of equal noise level contour was drawn. Noise annoyance induced by airport noise exposure was assessed by 764 local residents from 13 villages around the airport by socio-acoustic surveys. The membership function was used to calculate annoyance threshold (L) over bar WEPCN. The results of the survey showed that the aircraft noise annoyance threshold (L) over bar WEPCN were both 72.4dB by using the descriptive rating scale and the number rating scale to survey. According to the results, two kinds of rating scale were rather consistent.

Abstract:ISEE-0169 Background and Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the current traffic noise level in Xi'an city and to examine exposure-effect relationships between traffic noise exposure and children's distraction in class. Methods: The overall current noise levels were monitored, especially noise from traffic. We set up 126 monitoring sites in the whole city, and collected data for three months. We compared the noise level in different life zones to try to find out which was the highest. We also conducted a study assessing 1890 pupils, aged 8–10, from 42 schools near major traffic roads and not, from all eight urban areas in Xi'an. Children were selected on the basis of exposure to external road traffic noise exposure. A well-administered questionnaire concerning distraction in class and demographic information was distributed to these pupils and their teachers. Results: The noise from major roads was above 20% of the overall noise in Xi'an city, and reached an average level of 62 dB, exceeding the concern level for causing public health problems. Among all the life zones, the ones near the major traffic roads had the highest noise levels. Traffic noise exposure was significantly associated with an increased score on distracted behavior among children after full adjustment. Conclusion: The assessment of noise level in Xi'an city suggested that noise level in urban areas of Xi'an has reached an alarming level. Meanwhile, a population survey in children revealed that living near a road with heavy traffic volume is one of the risk factors for distraction in class among pupils–this is an important problem impacting on behaviour at school and effective learning among children.
Noise monitoring and adverse health effects in residents in different functional areas of Luzhou, China

Abstract:The purpose of the study was to investigate the noise pollution situation and the resulting adverse effect on residents' health in Luzhou, China, to provide data for noise pollution prevention policies and interventions. Four different functional areas (commercial, construction, residential, and transportation hub areas) were chosen to monitor noise level for 3 months. The survey was performed by questionnaire on the spot on randomly selected individuals; it collected data on the impact of noise on residents' health (quality of sleep, high blood pressure, subjective feeling of nervous system damage, and attention) as well as the knowledge of noise-induced health damage, the degree of adaptation to noise, and their solutions. The noise levels of residential, commercial, transportation, and construction areas exceeded the national standards (P < .001). Sleep quality, prevalence of hypertension, and attention in transportation hub areas were significantly different from those in the other 3 areas (P < .05); only 24.46% of people knew the health hazards associated with noise; 64.57% of residents have adapted to the current noise environment. Most of them have to close the doors and windows to reduce noise. The noise pollution situation in Luzhou, China, is serious, especially the traffic noise pollution. Residents pay less attention to it and adopt single measures to reduce the noise. We should work toward the prevention and control of traffic noise and improve the residents' awareness to reduce the adverse health effects of noise.

Abstract:Urban noise causes a variety of health problems, and its prevention and control have thus become an important research topic in urban governance. Although existing literature is fairly comprehensive in revealing the physical noise patterns, it lacks the concern of people’s perceived seriousness, especially at the macroscopic, i.e., citywide scale. In this paper, we borrow from the “exposure-perception-behavior” theory in environmental psychology, and propose an analytical framework for diagnosing the urban noise problem that integrates the Infrastructural and Social Sensing perspectives. Utilizing noise monitoring data that fills the spatiotemporal granularity gaps of official noise monitoring, as well as the “12345” urban complaint hotline records which serve as a proxy for residents’ perceived noise levels, we empirically examine the mechanisms for physical magnitude and perceived seriousness of urban noise, respectively, by taking the Jiangbei District of Ningbo City, China as an example. Results show that the existence of perceptual bias and behavioral preference effects did shape people’s perceived noise problem map that is vastly different from that of the physical noise magnitude, in which the semantics of urban places, temporal rhythms of life, and population demographics significantly influenced people’s tolerance of noise. We conclude the paper with suggestions on updating the existing National Standard for urban noise regulation to reflect the perceptual aspect, and also methodological discussions on possible ways to recognize and utilize the perceptual bias in social-sensing big-data to better accommodate urban governance.

Abstract:The study of the temporal and spatial characteristics of air pollutants in heavily polluted cities is extremely important for analyzing the causes of pollution and achieving a viable means of control. Such characteristics in the case of Xi'an, a typical heavily polluted city in Fenwei Plain, China, have remained unclear due to limitations in data accuracy and research methods. The monthly, daily, and hourly patterns of O3 and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) are analyzed in this study using on-site data provided by an urban air quality monitoring network. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) method was used to compare differences in pollutant concentrations during different seasons and time periods. The spatial distributions of O3, PM2.5, and PM10 at different time points following interpolation of the air quality monitoring sites have been analyzed. The results show that the O3 concentration from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. was significantly higher than that in the morning and evening, and the concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. were significantly higher than those in the morning and afternoon. The number of qualified days for PM2.5 was less than 30 and unqualified days for O3 was more than 100 in 2019. There is a potential risk of exposure to pollution with associated health risks. Even on the same day, the spatial pollutant distributions at different time points can differ significantly. This study provides a scientific basis for reducing O3 and particulate matter exposure. Outdoor activities in the morning in summer are more beneficial to reduce O3 exposure, and outdoor activities should be curtailed in the evening in winter to reduce particulate exposure. This study provides a scientific basis for the government to formulate public health policies to reduce pollution exposure from outdoor activities.

Abstract:With rapid urbanization and increase in car ownership, ambient noise pollution resulting from diversified sources (e.g., road traffic, railway, commercial services) has become a severe environmental problem in the populated areas in China. However, research on the spatial variation of noise pollution and its potential effects on urban residents’ mental health has to date been quite scarce in developing countries like China. Using a health survey conducted in Beijing in 2017, we for the first time investigated the spatial distributions of multiple noise pollution perceived by residents in Beijing, including road traffic noise, railway (or subway) noise, commercial noise, and housing renovation (or construction) noise. Our results indicate that there is geographic variability in noise pollution at the neighborhood scale, and road traffic and housing renovation/construction are the principal sources of noise pollution in Beijing. We then employed Bayesian multilevel logistic models to examine the associations between diversified noise pollution and urban residents’ mental health symptoms, including anxiety, stress, fatigue, headache, and sleep disturbance, while controlling for a wide range of confounding factors such as socio-demographics, objective built environment characteristics, social environment and geographic context. The results show that perceived higher noise-pollution exposure is significantly associated with worse mental health, while physical environment variables seem to contribute little to variations in self-reported mental disorders, except for proximity to the main road. Social factors or socio-demographic attributes, such as age and income, are significant covariates of urban residents’ mental health, while the social environment (i.e., community attachment) and housing satisfaction are significantly correlated with anxiety and stress. This study provides empirical evidence on the noise-health relationships in the Chinese context and sheds light on the policy implications for environmental pollution mitigation and healthy city development in China.

Spatial Distribution and Risk Assessment of Soil Heavy Metals in Main Urban Area of Xi’an

Abstract:Evaluation of heavy metal pollution in soil is of great significance for food safety, human health, urban soil quality guarantee, urban soil remediation, and urban human-land relations. This paper selects Xi’an main city as a research area and collects 180 surface soil samples in the area. Soil samples were analyzed by inverse distance weight interpolation method to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics of soil heavy metals in the study area. Based on this, the pollution status and ecological risk of heavy metals in the study area were evaluated by the single factor pollution index method, Nemero comprehensive pollution index method, potential ecological risk assessment and geological accumulation index method. The results showed that the average concentrations of Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, Cd and Cr in the soil of the Xi’an main urban area were lower than the national risk screening value; the spatial distribution characteristics showed that the southern part of the main urban area of Xi’an was more polluted by heavy metals than the northern part. The Ni in the study area is basically in a clean state, and Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd, and Cr have different degrees of pollution; the average value of the Nemero comprehensive pollution index is 1.43, and the entire study area is at a light pollution level; the average value of the comprehensive ecological risk index is 21.3. The heavy metal pollution of the soil in the study area is at a slight ecological risk as a whole. From the perspective of regional differences in ecological risk, the ecological risk index of each urban area in order is Baqiao District, Xincheng District, Yanta District, Beilin District, Lianhu District, Weiyang District.

Abstract:Open spaces are important for improvement of the quality of urban living. Traditional research on open spaces mainly focuses on spatial forms and visual esthetics to analyze environmental quality, but lacks adequate consideration regarding acoustic elements. In the field of acoustic environment, people pay much attention to interior sound quality design and noise pollution. In order to provide a new viewpoint for urban design and to reinforce design methods, herein, the concept of soundscape was introduced. In this survey, the types and the features of waterfront soundscapes, as well as the spatial distribution of visitors were observed. Thirteen pairs of sound and image scenarios were presented to 112 subjects at the tourism city, Hangzhou, China. The sounds and images used were of real settings in waterfront scenic areas. The affective response was measured in terms of pleasure. The evaluation results showed the influence of the interaction between visual and acoustic stimuli on perception of the environment. It has been proven that there is a need to identify places where conservation of the sound environment is essential, due to the drastic impact of the loss of sound quality or its salient informational content on human appreciation, especially in theme spaces and folk-custom landscapes. Moreover, the coherence between sound and image influences human preferences, since coherent combinations are rated higher than the mean of the component stimuli. Therefore, the spatial partition of soundscape is also necessary with the movement of visual images.

Abstract:The impact of urban noise on residents' physical health and mental condition has gradually become a hot topic of public discussion. A single urban noise monitoring cannot fully reflect the public's actual perception and feeling of noise. In contrast, social perception data can provide indirect data reference for the public's perception of noise. This study first collected and synthesized public noise complaint data from the government complaint platform. Furthermore, the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of noise complaints in urban blocks were analyzed to explore the relationship between noise complaint behaviours and The Point of Interest (POI) distribution. The results show that: 1) In the time dimension, the total number of complaints at night is 2,157 and that in the daytime is 980. Furthermore, the number of noise complaints at night is much more than the number of noise complaints during the day; 2) In the spatial dimension, different types of noise complaints have obvious aggregation characteristics. Specifically, construction noise complaints are relatively concentrated, with some 1,813 complaints, while life and business noise complaints are scattered, with several 1,324 complaints; 3) Noise complaints have a specific correlation with the distribution of different types of POIs, among which the correlation is highest with living commercial and residential locations; 4) Places with higher and more abundant POIs are prone to higher noise complaints. This study can provide some ideas for promoting the optimization of urban noise problems.

A Study on the Soundscape of Underground Commercial Space in Lu'an City and Hefei City, China

Abstract:Soundscape is an important part and one of the main factors of the underground space environment. Field surveys were conducted to evaluate the soundscape of underground commercial spaces and to compare it with the soundscape of the above-ground commercial spaces between two cities (Lu'an City and Hefei City) in China, consequently presenting the construction strategy of the soundscape of underground commercial spaces in urban areas. The results showed that the sound in the shopping center, which people found comfortable, was at the lower to intermediate level. The main sounds that people perceived as "general" sounds were environmental sounds such as music, the humming of the air conditioning, people talking, walking, and the hawking of the stores. Nevertheless, "very comfortable" sounds were background music and the sound of live performances, which were indicated in the majority of people's opinions on evaluating a comfortable feeling, thus reflecting the impact of the sound of mall music on people's cognitive psychology. Therefore, it is necessary to control the volume of environmental noise at a certain level so that people's health is not adversely affected. It also helps shoppers to feel more comfortable psychologically and physiologically.
Effects of thermal and acoustic environments on human comfort in urban and suburban campuses in the cold region of China

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the effects of thermal–acoustic environments on human comfort in a cold region by focusing on Xi'an in China as a representative city. Four typical open spaces were identified within two universities, with one located in an urban area and the other in a suburban area. Surveys were conducted using questionnaires and environmental parameters were measured to assess thermal–acoustic perception. The physiological equivalent temperature ( PET ) and noise sound pressure levels were employed to measure the thermal–acoustic environments in the four open spaces. The results showed that the neutral PET was 19.1 °C in Xi'an from March to May, and the neutral temperature range was 14.9–23.4 °C. The preferred temperature was 20.0 °C. Acoustic sensation votes were lower in suburban areas than urban areas. Respondents in urban areas exhibited significantly higher sensitivity to the thermal and acoustic environments compared with those in suburban areas. Sensitivity to the thermal environment decreased as the environmental noise levels decreased. The temperature perceived as most suitable increased as the sensitivity to the thermal environment decreased. Acoustic comfort evaluations were generally higher in colder and warmer environments. Warmer environments heightened the sensitivity to the acoustic environment and this effect gradually decreased as the sound pressure levels increased. Thus, based on empirical analyses, we compared the effects of outdoor thermal–acoustic parameters on comfort to provide experimental data support for further outdoor thermal comfort research.

Abstract:Urban spatial structure factors can have considerable effects on traffic noise distribution. This study aimed to describe the spatial distribution characteristics of traffic noise and influencing factors in high-density cities. Fifteen indexes were selected from the three aspects of building layout, road organization and land use to analyse the influence of urban spatial structure factors on the noise spatial distribution. This paper selected the central area of Tianjin as the study area. The noise level was generated by the noise simulation software CadnaA, and the numerical statistics were determined by ArcGIS. The correlation between various urban indexes and the spatial distribution of traffic noise were determined with correlation analysis, and multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) analysis was used to determine the degree and scope of influence of various urban indexes on the spatial distribution of traffic noise. The results indicate that there are significant differences in the spatial agglomeration forms of high, medium, and low noise areas among research units, and the spatial agglomeration of low noise areas in each unit is stronger. The building layout indexes, except for the average building height (ABH), are significantly negatively correlated with the noise levels in low noise areas ( L70 – L90 ). The road length index (RLI), road area density (RAD), road landscape shape index (RLSI), trunk road length index (TRLI), proportion of traffic land (PT), and degree of land mixing (DLM) are significantly positively correlated with the noise levels of all areas within the unit ( L10 – L90 ). Among the three aspects of building layout, road organization, and land use, the architectural landscape shape index (ALSI), RAD, and DLM have the greatest influence on the average spatial sound pressure level ( Lavg ), with mean regression coefficients of −0.254, 0.520, and 0.174, respectively. The ground space index (GSI), ALSI, proportion of residential land (PR) and PT are the global factors influencing Lavg .

Abstract:With the promotion of smart city research, traffic big data has become a new way to study urban traffic noise. Taking Dongguan Demonstration Area, China as an example, this research discussed the relationships between traffic noise levels and urban plannings using geographic information scienceGIS, global positioning system (GPS) techniques and OpenITS Organization OpenData. The results showed that, for the whole area, some planning factors, say global integration, local integration (R=500m), global betweenness, local betweenness (R=500m) and number of points of interest (POIs) had significant positive correlations with the daytime traffic noise levels. Among them, the number of POIs had the strongest correlation with the traffic noise levels (r=0.560 p<0.01). However, the degree of influence of each variable on traffic noise levels can be changed with geographical locations. This research also identified specific areas where traffic noise levels were negatively correlated with local integration and local betweenness, which had great potential to provide a recreational and peaceful place for people to walk. Therefore, the urban areas' centers and fringes can be studied separately to effectively control traffic noise by changing the urban plannings.
Analysis of ambient air quality in Xi'an during the thirteenth five-year plan period

Abstract:Based on the monitoring results of air pollutants in Xi'an from 2016 to 2020, based on the statistical analysis of its annual average concentration, monthly average concentration, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, comprehensive index of ambient air quality and pollutant load factor in the past five years, the air quality of Xi'an was further understood. The results show that: (1) except for ozone, the annual average concentration of pollutants in Xi'an showed a downward trend, and the monthly average concentration showed a “U” shape except ozone. The concentration increased obviously in autumn and winter, the pollution was more serious, and the air quality improved obviously in spring and summer. (2) TSP is the main air pollutant in Xi'an for five years. Although the concentration of TSP is decreasing, it still needs to be improved. (3) According to the correlation analysis of various air pollutants, PM10 and PM2.5 show significant positive correlation, and PM2.5 and PM10 have high homology with SO2, CO, NO2.
Study of the current status and factors that influence indoor air pollution in 138 houses in the urban area in Xi'an.

Abstract:Indoor air pollutants were monitored in 138 households in urban Xi'an that were recently decorated, and the concentrations of formaldehyde, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), amines, benzene, methylbenzol, xylene, and radon were monitored in the bedrooms, sitting rooms, dinning rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and studies of the houses. The most seriously elevated pollutants were TVOC and formaldehyde, whose rates exceeded standards by 69.8% and 60.8%, respectively. Ammonia was 13.2% above the standard, and xylene was 8.7% above the standard. The level of radon in 100% of the rooms was below the standard. Only for formaldehyde were there statistically significant differences in concentrations in the sitting room, bedroom, and study (P < 0.05). Concentrations of TVOC, amines, and xylene were positively related to the concentration of formaldehyde in the same room. The concentrations of the major pollutants in summer were highest and had a statistically significant difference with those in other seasons. TVOC and formaldehyde were the most serious pollutants indoors after decorating in an urban area of Xi'an. The concentrations of formaldehyde in the sitting rooms were different than in other types of rooms. Formaldehyde can be a representative of the levels of pollutants indoors; rooms with a higher concentration of formaldehyde tend to have higher levels of other pollutants. In addition, pollutants in the decorated rooms have a strong positive dependence on the monitoring seasons. Summer was the peak time of indoor pollutant levels. Households should pay extra attention to ventilation and take other effective measures to avoid health problems caused by indoor air pollutants.

Abstract:Base on six soundscape investigation case studies in some small urban or historical areas, included the South Putuo Temple of Xiamen city in 2006, the downtown of Kashkar city in 2006, the local worship music performing area of South Gaoluo village in 2007, the Nanxiangkou local music performing area in Hebei University of Technology Gymnasium of ShijiaZhuang city in 2007, the downtown riverside of Liuzhou city in 2010, the local worship and music performing areas of Qianjuntai village and Zhuanghu village of Beijing city in 2011, a certain relationship analysis between the acoustical parameters and its audience's behavior or subjective assessment is put forward in this paper. Due to the two-dimensional (Leq and the subjective assessments) fuzzy clustering or curve fitting, it shows that the sound ecology would have a critical connection to the anthropological sense, which means some keynotes sound and soundmarks must be keep constantly during the soundscape design or the urban development. Furthermore, a rough concept of sound history and the constant of keynotes and soundmarks in the view of soundscape are also discussed in this paper.
Context-Expectation, Desensitization, and Synaesthesia: Comparing the Physical Acoustic Environment and Perceptual Soundscapes in Urban Public Spaces

Abstract:The quality of the urban acoustic environment is of vital relevance to people’s quality of life with the pressing noise pollution problem in cities. Previous literature, although appropriately discerning the physical acoustic environment from the perceived soundscape, is insufficient in explaining the mechanistic difference between the two with a uniform variable structure of environmental features, and also lacks comprehensive coverage of the various urban space types at a fine granularity which captures the heterogeneity of the city. To address the knowledge gaps, this study develops fine-spatial granularity mechanistic models of physical acoustic environment generation and soundscape perception, respectively for eight typical urban public space types supported by empirical data in the Chinese city of Ningbo. The findings, corroborating the general principle that people’s perceived soundscape is based on the physical noise level which is affected by the forms and functions of urban public spaces in the first place, reveal the complex personal and behavioral mechanisms that underline urban soundscape perception. Particularly, the uncovered “context-expectation”, desensitization, and “synaesthesia” effects stress the vital role that the urban public space context plays in shaping people’s subjective soundscape perception as these behavioral effects work differently in different types of urban public spaces. These findings highlight the fundamental differences between the generation mechanisms of the physical acoustic environment and the perceived soundscape, and have practical implications for improving the evaluation, planning, and management of urban public space soundscapes.
