Abstract:Night-time light remote sensing provides a new perspective on human socio-economic activities by detecting the faint light generated by human activities during the hours of darkness. The development of night-time light remote sensing satellite technology has enabled regular and frequent detection across the globe, providing a wealth of data for the assessment of Earth's society. This includes economic development as well as environmental change. Exploring this rich information from night-time light imagery is an important research direction for understanding differences in regions with high night-time light homogeneity. In addition, significant progress has been made in research on the drivers of change in night-time light emission itself and the improvement of night-time light products.

Abstract:Nighttime light observations from remote sensing provide us with a timely and spatially explicit measure of human activities, and therefore enable a host of applications such as tracking urbanization and socioeconomic dynamics, evaluating armed conflicts and disasters, investigating fisheries, assessing greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, and analyzing light pollution and health effects. The new and improved sensors, algorithms, and products for nighttime lights, in association with other Earth observations and ancillary data (e.g., geo-located big data), together offer great potential for a deep understanding of human activities and related environmental consequences in a changing world. This paper reviews the advances of nighttime light sensors and products and examines the contributions of nighttime light remote sensing to perceiving the changing world from two aspects (i.e., human activities and environmental changes). Based on the historical review of the advances in nighttime light remote sensing, we summarize the challenges in current nighttime light remote sensing research and propose four strategic directions, including: Improving nighttime light data; developing a long time series of consistent nighttime light data; integrating nighttime light observations with other data and knowledge; and promoting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary analyses of nighttime light observations.

Abstract:City lights, fishing boats, and oil fields are the major sources of nighttime lights, therefore the nighttime light images provide a unique source to map human beings and their activities from outer space. While most of the scholars focused on application of nighttime light remote sensing in urbanization and regional development, the actual fields are much wider. This paper summarized the applications of nighttime light remote sensing into fields such as the estimation of socioeconomic parameters, monitoring urbanization, evaluation of important events, analyzing light pollution, fishery, etc. For estimation of socioeconomic parameters, the most promising progress is that Gross Domestic Product and its growth rate have been estimated with statistical data and nighttime light data using econometric models. For monitoring urbanization, urban area and its dynamics can be extracted using different classification methods, and spatial analysis has been employed to map urban agglomeration. As sharp changes of nighttime light are associated with important socioeconomic events, the images have been used to evaluate humanitarian disasters, especially in the current Syrian and Iraqi wars. Light pollution is another hotspot of nighttime light application, as the night light is related to some diseases and abnormal behavior of animals, and the nighttime light images can provide light pollution information on large scales so that it is much easier to analyze the effects of light pollutions. In each field, we listed typical cases of the applications. At last, future studies of nighttime light remote sensing have been predicted.
An Overview on Data Mining of Nighttime Light Remote Sensing

Abstract:When observing the Earth from above at night,it is clear that the human settlement and major economic regions emit glorious l ight.At cloud-free nights,some remote sensing satel l ites can record visible radiance source,including city l ight,fishing boat l ight and fi re,and these nighttime cloud-free images are remotely sensed nighttime l ight images.Different from daytime remote sensing,nighttime l ight remote sensing provides a unique perspective on human social activities,thus it has been widely used for spatial data mining of socioeconomic domains.Historical ly,researches on nighttime l ight remote sensing mostly focus on urban land cover and urban expansion mapping using DMSP/OLS imagery,but the nighttime l ight images are not the unique remote sensing source to do these works.Through decades of development of nighttime l ight product,the nighttime l ight remote sensing appl ication has been extended to numerous interesting and scientific study domains such as econometrics,poverty estimation,l ight pol lution,fishery and armed confl ict.Among the appl ication cases,it is surprising to see the Gross Domestic Production (GDP)data can be corrected using the nighttime l ight data,and it is interesting to see mechanism of several diseases can be revealed by nighttime l ight images,whi le nighttime l ight are the unique remote sensing source to do the above works.As the nighttime l ight remote sensing has numerous appl ications,it is important to summarize the appl ication of nighttime l ight remote sensing and its data mining fields.This paper introduced major satel l ite platform and sensors for observing nighttime l ight at fi rst.Consequently, the paper summarized the progress of nighttime l ight remote sensing data mining in socioeconomic parameter estimation,urbanization monitoring,important event evaluation,envi ronmental and healthy effects,fishery dynamic mapping,epidemiological research and natural gas flaring monitoring.Final ly, future trends of nighttime l ight remote sensing and its data mining have been proposed from four aspects including new data source,knowledge discovery,in-situ observation,and national/global geographic conditions monitoring.

Abstract:Night-time light remote sensing means the satellite sensor acquires the city light,boat light and flaring gas at cloud-free night.As most of the visible lights at night are strongly related to human activities, the night-time light remote sensing is efficient in acquiring socioeconomic development dynamics and assessing the macro problems from the development. From the perspectives of monitoring disasters,the remote sensing technique can help to promote socioeconomic development.This paper introduced how the night-time light remote sensing played an important role in issues of regional development assessment, light pollution investigation and environmental evaluation so that it can help to evaluate and support quality of socioeconomic development. Considering the Belt and Road (B & R)strategy,the paper briefly analyzed the night-time light dynamics of the B & R region during the last 20 years and therefore found some patterns of this regional development.For the future construction of B & R,night-time light remote sensing can provide scientific information for China ’s investment and diplomatic policy,to support B & R construction quality.
DeepLight: Reconstructing High-Resolution Observations of Nighttime Light With Multi-Modal Remote Sensing Data

Abstract:Nighttime light (NTL) remote sensing observation serves as a unique proxy for quantitatively assessing progress toward meeting a series of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as poverty estimation, urban sustainable development, and carbon emission. However, existing NTL observations often suffer from pervasive degradation and inconsistency, limiting their utility for computing the indicators defined by the SDGs. In this study, we propose a novel approach to reconstruct high-resolution NTL images using multi-modal remote sensing data. To support this research endeavor, we introduce DeepLightMD, a comprehensive dataset comprising data from five heterogeneous sensors, offering fine spatial resolution and rich spectral information at a national scale. Additionally, we present DeepLightSR, a calibration-aware method for building bridges between spatially heterogeneous modality data in the multi-modality super-resolution. DeepLightSR integrates calibration-aware alignment, an auxiliary-to-main multi-modality fusion, and an auxiliary-embedded refinement to effectively address spatial heterogeneity, fuse diversely representative features, and enhance performance in $8\times$ super-resolution (SR) tasks. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of DeepLightSR over 8 competing methods, as evidenced by improvements in PSNR (2.01 dB $ \sim $ 13.25 dB) and PIQE (0.49 $ \sim $ 9.32). Our findings underscore the practical significance of our proposed dataset and model in reconstructing high-resolution NTL data, supporting efficiently and quantitatively assessing the SDG progress.

An Unsupervised Urban Extent Extraction Method from NPP-VIIRS Nighttime Light Data

Abstract:An accelerating trend of global urbanization accompanying various environmental and urban issues makes frequently urban mapping. Nighttime light data (NTL) has shown great advantages in urban mapping at regional and global scales over long time series because of its appropriate spatial and temporal resolution, free access, and global coverage. However, the existing urban extent extraction methods based on nighttime light data rely on auxiliary data and training samples, which require labor and time for data preparation, leading to the difficulty to extract urban extent at a large scale. This study seeks to develop an unsupervised method to extract urban extent from nighttime light data rapidly and accurately without ancillary data. The clustering algorithm is applied to segment urban areas from the background and multi-scale spatial context constraints are utilized to reduce errors arising from the low brightness areas and increase detail information in urban edge district. Firstly, the urban edge district is detected using spatial context constrained clustering, and the NTL image is divided into urban interior district, urban edge district and non-urban interior district. Secondly, the urban edge pixels are classified by an adaptive direction filtering clustering. Finally, the full urban extent is obtained by merging the urban inner pixels and the urban pixels in urban edge district. The proposed method was validated using the urban extents of 25 Chinese cities, obtained by Landsat8 images and compared with two common methods, the local-optimized threshold method (LOT) and the integrated night light, normalized vegetation index, and surface temperature support vector machine classification method (INNL-SVM). The Kappa coefficient ranged from 0.687 to 0.829 with an average of 0.7686 (1.80% higher than LOT and 4.88% higher than INNL-SVM). The results in this study show that the proposed method is a reliable and efficient method for extracting urban extent with high accuracy and simple operation. These imply the significant potential for urban mapping and urban expansion research at regional and global scales automatically and accurately.

Abstract:N IGHTTIME light (NTL) data provides unique observations of our Earth and receives increasing attentions from a variety of fields such as remote sensing, GIS, and urban planning. Since 1990s, the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program— Operational Linescan System (DMSP-OLS) NTL data have been explored to monitor human activities. Recently, new NTL satellites such as NPP-VIIRS, International Space Station (ISS), EROS-B, Jilin 1-3B, and Luojia 1-01, with better spatial and temporal resolutions, and even multispectral information, have been launched. These new satellites can provide a greater amount of detailed artificial light records at night and could improve our understanding the process of urbanization. On the other hand, the new NTL data pose new scientific and technological challenges in calibration, interpretation, applications, and potential assessment. To collect and highlight recent progresses, current challenges, and future opportunities in remote sensing of NTLs, we organized a special issue in the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing. This issue selected eight papers on the following topics of NTL remote sensing. 1) Data preprocessing such as noise elimination, image enhancement, and geometric correction. 2) Analyses of relationship between ground observations of artificial lights and spaceborne measurements of nighttime brightness. 3) Applications of NTL remotely sensed data such as urbanization mapping, environmental analysis, events detection, and change analyses. 4) Assessment of new remotely sensed NTL data potential, especially beyond traditional applications. The paper by Wang et al. [item 1) in the Appendix] assesses the aerosol influence on NPP-VIIRS NTL data. A significantly negative relationship between the NTL radiance and aerosol optical depth (AOD) from AERONET and Himawari is found by using the linear and log-linear models. This article demonstrates that, with the consideration of the time scale of NTL data, city size, climate types, the influence of AOD on NTL data could be different, which is an essential factor in determining the quality of NTL data. Abstract:Since the release of the digital archives of Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Operational Line Scanner (DMSP/OLS) nighttime light data in 1992, a variety of datasets based on this database have been produced and applied to monitor and analyze human activities and natural phenomena. However, differences among these datasets and how they have been applied may potentially confuse researchers working with these data. In this paper, we review the ways in which data from DMSP/OLS nighttime light images have been applied over the past two decades, focusing on differences in data processing, research trends, and the methods used among the different application areas. Five main datasets extracted from this database have led to many studies in various research areas over the last 20 years, and each dataset has its own strengths and limitations. The number of publications based on this database and the diversity of authors and institutions involved have shown promising growth. In addition, researchers have accumulated vast experience retrieving data on the spatial and temporal dynamics of settlement, demographics, and socioeconomic parameters, which are “hotspot” applications in this field. Researchers continue to develop novel ways to extract more information from the DMSP/OLS database and apply the data to interdisciplinary research topics. We believe that DMSP/OLS nighttime light data will play an important role in monitoring and analyzing human activities and natural phenomena from space in the future, particularly over the long term. A transparent platform that encourages data sharing, communication, and discussion of extraction methods and synthesis activities will benefit researchers as well as public and political stakeholders.

Abstract:The satellite imagery of nighttime lights (NTLs) has been studied to understand human activities, economic development, and more recently, the ecological impact of brighter night skies. The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day–Night Band (DNB) offers perhaps the most advanced nighttime imaging capabilities to date, but its large pixel size and single band capture large-scale changes in NTL while missing granular but important details, such as lighting type and brightness. To better understand individual NTL sources in a region, the spectra of nighttime lights captured by the DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) were extracted and compared against near-coincident VIIRS DNB imagery. The analysis shows that DESIS's finer spatial and spectral resolutions can detect individual NTL locations and types beyond what is possible with the DNB. Extracted night light spectra, validated against ground truth measurements, demonstrate DESIS's ability to accurately detect and identify narrow-band atomic emission lines that characterize the spectra of high-intensity discharge (HID) light sources and the broader spectral features associated with different light-emitting diode (LED) lights. These results suggest the possible application of using hyperspectral data from moderate-resolution sensors to identify lamp construction details, such as illumination source type and light quality in low-light contexts. NTL data from DESIS and other hyperspectral sensors may improve the scientific understanding of light pollution, lighting quality, and energy efficiency by identifying, evaluating, and mapping individual and small groups of light sources.

Abstract:In recent years, due to growing number of humanitarian disasters, international attention to refugees has increased. However, many refugee settlements are located in remote areas and there is a lack of relevant surveying data, which leads to the evaluation with difficulties. In this study, we attempt to use nighttime remote sensing to analyze temporal evolution and living conditions of selected refugee camps. First, utilizing monthly nighttime data from the visible infrared imaging radiometer suite with time series analysis, six typical refugee camps in Africa and Asia were selected for a large-scale assessment and comparison, suggesting that time series nighttime light imagery can reflect evolutional trends and economic levels of refugee camps. Second, we use the Kutupalong refugee camp in Bangladesh as a case to show the capacity of the high resolution nighttime light data in retrieving living condition information of the camps, by analyzing the nighttime light data from sustainable development goals satellite-1 combined with humanitarian points of interest data. Specifically, based on spatial analysis (e.g., hotspot analysis), the distribution pattern of nighttime light in the camp was further explored, and the sanitation security situation in the camp was assessed. This study demonstrates that nighttime remote sensing imagery is potentially useful in evaluating refugee camps around the world, providing technical support to international humanitarian relief work.

Abstract:Abstract. Night-time light (NTL) remote sensing data has been widely used in the analysis of human activities at night for a large extent, such as light pollution monitoring and recognition of urban functional regions. In most previous studies, the spatial resolutions of NTL remote sensing data are rather low (e.g., 500 m or coarser). Besides, remote sensing classification of land use rather than land cover types is often a hard task. Due to the reasons, it is difficult to meet the demand of urban refined management. In this study, mobile big data and Luojia1-01 (LJ1-01) NTL remote sensing satellite data with higher spatial resolution are adopted for extracting urban functional regions at the street-level scale. Taking Shenzhen city as a case, mobile big data (i.e., the volume of mobile devices) with the accuracy of approximate 150 m (i.e., 7-bit GeoHash encoding format) is integrated with NTL remote sensing data. After a hot spot analysis, the correlation between the two types of data are analysed. The typical supervised classification algorithms including KNN, SVM and random forest are used to distinguish urban functional regions, which are represented by five types, namely residential, business and commercial, industrial, transportation and other areas. The results show the effectiveness in extracting land use types in cities by combination of Luojia1-01 night-time light remote sensing and mobile big data. This study provides a basis for monitoring night light pollution of residential area, urban planning and the construction of smart cities.
The Potential of Moonlight Remote Sensing: A Systematic Assessment with Multi-Source Nightlight Remote Sensing Data

Abstract:One recent trend in optical remote sensing is to increase observation frequencies. However, there are still challenges on the night side when sunlight is not available. Due to their powerful capabilities in low-light sensing, nightlight satellite sensors have been deployed to capture nightscapes of Earth from space, observing anthropomorphic and natural activities at night. To date, the mainstream of nightlight remote sensing applications has mainly focused on artificial lights, especially within cities or self-luminous bodies, such as fisheries, oil, offshore rigs, etc. Observations taken under moonlight are often discarded or corrected to reduce lunar effects. Some researchers have discussed the possibility of using moonlight as a useful illuminating source at night for the detection of nocturnal features on Earth, but no quantitative analysis has been reported so far. This study aims to systematically evaluate the potential of moonlight remote sensing with mono-spectral Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite/Day-Night-Band (VIIRS/DNB) imagery and multi-spectral photos taken by astronauts from the International Space Station (ISS), as well as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) night-time imagery. Using the VIIRS/DNB, ISS and UAV moonlight images, the possibilities of the moonlight remote sensing were first discussed. Then, the VIIRS/DNB, ISS, UAV images were classified over different non-self-lighting land surfaces to explore the potential of moonlight remote sensing. The overall accuracies (OA) and kappa coefficients are 79.80% and 0.45, 87.16% and 0.77, 91.49% and 0.85, respectively, indicating a capability to characterize land surface that is very similar to daytime remote sensing. Finally, the characteristics of current moonlight remote sensing are discussed in terms of bands, spatial resolutions, and sensors. The results confirm that moonlight remote sensing has huge potential for Earth observation, which will be of great importance to significantly increase the temporal coverage of optical remote sensing during the whole diurnal cycle. Based on these discussions, we further examined requirements for next-generation nightlight remote sensing satellite sensors.

Abstract:In order to study the phenomenon of regional economic development and urban expansion from the perspective of night-light remote sensing images, researchers use NOAA-provided night-light remote sensing image data (data from 1992 to 2013) along with ArcGIS software to process image information, obtain the basic pixel information data of specific areas of the image, and analyze these data from the space-time domain for presentation of the trend of regional economic development in China in recent years, and tries to explore the urbanization effect brought by the rapid development of China's economy. Through the analysis and study of the data, the results show that the urbanization development speed in China is still at its peak, and has great development potential and space. But at the same time, people also need to pay attention to the imbalance of regional development.

Abstract:Satellite-observed night-time light has been utilized as a significant indicator for human activities and its impact on environment. Up to present, existing nighttime light (NTL) data still faces challenges in detecting the short-term human-related events due to limitation of the satellite revisit time and data quality. In this paper, we propose a promising approach for monitoring daily light during night based on deep learning and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). By modelling the relationship between MODIS and observed nighttime light, our proposed approach achieves the capability for conversion from MODIS image to Luojia-I-like daily NTL images. The quantitatively assessment of our generated NTL images demonstrates its great performance in terms of both similarity and NTL pattern.
Methods for Extracting Urban Construction Land Using Night-Light Data: Assessment and Application.

Abstract:As a new data source, night light remote sensing data are more suitable for the background of rapid urbanization in China. Therefore, in recent years, many scholars have used the night light remote sensing data to extract and study the expansion of urban construction land. However, researchers are still trying to find better methods to avoid the internal defects of night light data. This study assessed the advantages and disadvantages of existing methods for extracting urban construction land using night light data through actual applications. The results indicated that the areas of urban construction lands extracted using threshold methods were much closer to the authoritative data, and the shape coincidence degrees were also better, while the shape similarity degrees of urban construction lands extracted using the neighborhood analysis method were much better. Further analyses revealed that we may find a better method for extracting urban construction land by considering both the intensity of night light data and the natural boundaries of cities and towns.

Abstract:The stable lighttime data,the radiance-calibrated nighttime light intensity data and the non radiance-calibrated nighttime light intensity data are the three major products that have emerged in the field of the DMSP/OLS nighttime light data.It has several advantages,namely,easy acquisition of data,detection of low-intensity lights,unaffected by shadows,convenient provision of conditions for urbanization strength and its spatial-temporal difference analysis,and so on.At present,there are many research results on DMSP/OLS data,which mainly focus on city development,human activity and effect,eco-environment impact,but there are few studies on systematic results.This paper analyzed the existing researches on DMSP/OLS data,summarized and drew some conclusions based on the existing research results,the technical methods and the advantages and disadvantages of the methods,as well as explored the application prospect of DMSP/OLS nighttime light average intensity data.It predicted the future research trends of the data：（1） an in-depth study on processing methods of the data;（2） further expansion of data application;（3） the integrated study on DMSP/OLS data and other data models need to be deepened;（4） combine the existing research results,make further research on mechanism issues of geography phenomenon.
Reconstructing Three-decade Global Fine-Grained Nighttime Light Observations by a New Super-Resolution Framework

Abstract:Satellite-collected nighttime light provides a unique perspective on human activities, including urbanization, population growth, and epidemics. Yet, long-term and fine-grained nighttime light observations are lacking, leaving the analysis and applications of decades of light changes in urban facilities undeveloped. To fill this gap, we developed an innovative framework and used it to design a new super-resolution model that reconstructs low-resolution nighttime light data into high resolution. The validation of one billion data points shows that the correlation coefficient of our model at the global scale reaches 0.873, which is significantly higher than that of other existing models (maximum = 0.713). Our model also outperforms existing models at the national and urban scales. Furthermore, through an inspection of airports and roads, only our model's image details can reveal the historical development of these facilities. We provide the long-term and fine-grained nighttime light observations to promote research on human activities. Abstract:As a new high-technology with large amount of information, strong temporal resolution, high efficiency and low cost, remote sensing provided a useful tool for related researches of land use and land cover in different spatial and temporal scales. Firstly, concepts and characteristics of the remote sensing technology were introduced. Secondly, its applications were elaborated in land use and land cover such as land resources survey, land resources change monitoring, land use evaluation, overall planning of land use and land consolidation aspects. At last, future application trends and several aspects noticed were pointed out.
