Abstract:Describing the dependence of both signal propagation delay and pixel charging time on display specifications and device parameters, a timing model and a combined coordinate system for its convenient visualization are developed for an active-matrix display. Presented also is an algorithm developed to optimally determine the width of the interconnects and that of the address transistor for maximizing the aperture ratio of a pixel. The model could be applied to search for optimal viable designs under different panel specifications and technology constraints.

Abstract:Flat panel displays are electronic displays that are thin and lightweight, making them ideal for use in a wide range of applications, from televisions and computer monitors to mobile devices and digital signage. The Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) layer is responsible for controlling the amount of light that passes through each pixel and is located behind the liquid crystal layer, enabling precise image control and high-quality display. As one of the important parameters to evaluate the display performance, the faster response time provides more frames in a second, which benefits many high-end applications, such as applications for playing games and watching movies. To further improve the response time, the single-pixel charging efficiency is investigated in this paper by optimizing the TFT dimensions in gate driver circuits in active-matrix liquid crystal displays. The accurate circuit simulation model is developed to minimize the signal's fall time (Tf) by optimizing the TFT width-to-length ratio. Our results show that using a driving TFT width of 6790 and a reset TFT width of 640 μm resulted in a minimum Tf of 2.6572 μs, corresponding to a maximum pixel charging ratio of 90.61275%. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of our optimization strategy in enhancing pixel charging efficiency and improving display performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we design a microencapsulated electronic ink display, which applys the static driving method. It's composed of display controller and matrix display, these two parts are connected by several signals, such as clock and data. The matrix display could receive display data from display controller and transfer them to drivers to realize the display of characters or graphics. According to the experiment result, the overall display performance is good.

Abstract:The circuit design of a single panel LCOS microdisplay chip is described. Equipped with proper engine and interface circuit system, the LCOS chip can be used to implement single panel LCOS rear-projection TV or other projection products. Similar with traditional field sequential color LCOS microdisplay chip, it consists of three parts: row scan driver, data driver and pixel array. The main difference of them is the row access method. The traditional field sequential color LCOS uses line-by-line row scan, while the LCOS introduced here uses random addressing. The red, green and blue data are almost written into the pixel array simultaneously. Cooperating with scrolling engine the color image is displayed. Single panel LCOS system costs less chips and relevant circuit systems, then can reduce product cost.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a hybrid driving scheme of a-Si pixel circuit for active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays. In this driving scheme, the data line is pre-charged to a specific voltage before current programming. By investigating the effect of the pre-charging voltage (V-ref) on the settling time, we demonstrate that for a given rang of programming current, there is an optimal value of V-ref that minimizes the overall settling time. Simulation results, based on a-Si TFT and OLED experimental data, show that the settling time can be shortened to an acceptable range. This work provides the designer with a means to realize the a-Si TFT based 3.2-inch QVGA (320x240) AMOLEDs.

Abstract:Design of stable active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays comes with significant challenges that stem from the electrical property of the backplane materials, line parasitics in the matrix, and the opto-electronic property of the organic light-emitting diode (OLED). This paper reviews voltage and current programming schemes for AMOLEDs. Following a systematic review of pixel circuits, design considerations are examined for both current and voltage schemes with focus on stability and programming speed for both amorphous silicon (a-Si) and low temperature polysilicon (LTPS) pixel circuits. In particular, spatial parameter variations and stability, which hinder reliable operation of AMOLED display backplanes, are discussed. Analysis shows that while driving schemes reported hitherto maybe suitable for small and medium size displays, new schemes are critically needed for large-area high-resolution AMOLED displays.

Abstract:A novel pixel circuit with indium gallium zinc oxide thin-film transistors (IGZO-TFTs) for driving active-matrix Mini& Micro light-emitting diode (AM-MLED) display is proposed. The pixel circuit is built with seven n-type IGZO-TFTs and two capacitors. It can be conducted both under Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) mode and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) mode, bringing about more gray levels and a better picture quality. The pixel circuit can compensate for the threshold voltage (VTH) deviation of the driving TFT(T2) in the PAM mode through external compensation method. It also can compensate for the threshold voltage (Vth) deviation of the driving TFT (T4) in the PWM mode through the internal compensation circuit. The simulation results show that the pixel circuit under the T2 detecting timing can accurately detect the Vth of T2. On this basis, correct compensation can function well through adjusting data input value by external IC. The simulation results also demonstrate that when the deviation of the T4 threshold voltage occurs ± 1V, the average bit error rate of the light-emitting time is 2%. Therefore, the circuit can effectively compensate the VTH of T4. As a result, the proposed pixel circuit with hybrid driving mode exhibits high immunity to the threshold voltage deviation of T2 and T4, and good brightness uniformity of AM-MLED display can be obtained.

Abstract:We propose a new active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) pixel circuit in which the compensation for the thin film transistor and OLED performance variation and/or degeneration is performed periodically in a separate frame time. In the other frame time, the AMOLED pixel works without any compensation operation, so that the whole row time is used for driving. Only three transistors and two capacitors are required to construct the pixel circuit. It is demonstrated that both accurate compensation and high driving speed can be realized in the separate frame compensated AMOLED pixel circuit.

Abstract:A distributed processing model has been developed for FPD (Flat Panel Display). The model distinguishes itself by cascaded data transmission and parallel processing. With these two features, the model offers enhanced capabilities of driver circuitry, better brightness, portability, and scalability that meet various screen definitions. An overview of this model is given and the datapath is outlined. In the system, digital video data is transferred via high-speed differential signaling channels. All logical functions are deployed in FPGAs. The system design and implementation is discussed in detail. Note that sample circuitry aims at FED devices.

Abstract:The display quality, as well as the speed of electrophoretic displays (EPDs), is highly affected by the design of driving waveforms. A typical driving waveform contains the phases of image erase, particle activation, and driving each pixel to the target gray level. Due to the difficulty of modeling a complete EPD device, the designers still lack a systematic approach to driving waveform design. In this paper, we study the property of the viscosity of the suspension, characterize the response latency of the device, and propose a new driving waveform. The experimental results show that the proposed approach can effectively reduce driving time while still maintaining good image quality.

Abstract:Electrophoretic displays (EPDs) have become the main solution to electronic paper because of its invariably reflective and bistable properties. With different requirements of display resolution, speed, and contrast ratio, the electronic paper (E-paper) designers may adopt different types of electrophoretic material and active matrix backplane for building the system. The driving waveforms should be also customized for accommodating different application specifications and environment temperature. In this paper, we present a configurable EPD controller which can support various application specifications. In addition to providing a new architecture of compacted waveform lookup tables, the controller supports partial image update and integrates a real-time halftoning engine for improving image quality. The design has been implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and tested with several real EPDs.

Abstract:Capitalizing on their unique bistable and reflective attributes, electrophoretic displays (EPDs) provide a paper-like viewing experience with remarkably low power usage. This has driven their broad application across various fields, including eye-friendly E-readers, energy-saving electronic labels, cutting-edge wearable technology, outdoor displays, and intelligent low-power devices. In this study, a dynamic multiwaveform invocation and local time-division refresh (LTDR) technology are introduced. On the one hand, we compressed and modified traditional driving waveform to various extents first, forming optimized traditional driving waveform, fast driving waveform, and speed driving waveform. Subsequently, high-frequency oscillation waveform was incorporated into the fast driving waveform, and a variety of waveforms were dynamically invoked based on different display scenarios. On the other hand, we proposed an LTDR method, to refresh the resetting phase and driving phase in different regions simultaneously, thereby reducing the flicker effects caused by refreshing. The technology could balance display quality with refresh speed and eliminate flicker caused by traditional waveforms completely. Compared to the traditional waveform, the proposed technique can display 16-level grayscales while reducing the driving time and modulation depth by 60% and 95%, respectively, which greatly improves the reading experience of E-paper. In addition, the fast driving waveforms proposed can achieve low flicker and smooth video display in EPDs. Compared with the latest video display technology, its average structural similarity index measure (SSIM) is improved by 60.29% and energy consumption had reduced by 60.00%, which meets the demand for streaming video display on E-paper.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrated a 15-inch AMOLED display with the application of top-gate typed thin-film-transistors (TFTs). Particularly, the display was derived by gate driver on array circuit (GOA) with a panel resolution of HD (540×960). When the display was tape out, the I-V curves of TFTs were characterized by a Keithley-4200 equipment. Moreover, a jig and oscilloscope were utilized to testify the function of the GOA circuit. At last, this display was derived by GOA and a photograph of the display was shown.

This structure contributed significantly to border reduction and reliability improvement. What's more, amorphous‐indium‐gallium‐zinc‐oxide (a‐IGZO) thin‐film‐transistors (TFTs) with top‐gate structure exhibited high performance and the GOA circuits could operate well.

Abstract:In recent years, active-matrix organic light-emitting diodes (AMOLEDs) has been the most popular display for portable application. To satisfy the requirement for the application of the portable display, the design of the compensating pixel circuit with the low-voltage driving and low-power consumption will be requested. In addition to the circuit with the design of the low-voltage driving, high-mobility thin-film transistors as driving device will be also necessary in order to supply larger driving current at low-voltage driving. Therefore, the study presents a new low-voltage driving AMOLED pixel circuit with high-mobility amorphous indium–zinc–tin–oxide (a-IZTO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) as driving device for portable displays with high resolution. The proposed pixel circuit can simultaneously compensate for the threshold voltage variation of driving TFT (ΔVTH_TFT), OLED degradation (ΔVTH_OLED), and the I-R drop of a power line (ΔVDD). By using AIM-Spice for simulation based on fabricated a-IZTO TFTs with mobility of 70 cm2V−1S−1 as driving devices, we discovered that the error rates of the driving current were all lower than 5.71% for all input data when ΔVTH_TFT = ±1 V, ΔVDD = 0.5 V, and ΔVTH_OLED = 0.5 V were all considered simultaneously. We revealed that the proposed 5T2C pixel circuit containing a high-mobility a-IZTO TFT as a driving device was suitable for high-resolution portable displays.

Abstract:The brightness of low-temperature polycrystalline silicon and metal-oxide (LTPO) active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display under low-refresh-rate driving condition tends to increase during pixel voltage holding time of each frame even though there is no critical leakage current path from the storage capacitor. We have found that the main cause of the brightness increase is electron trapping into the gate insulator of driving thin-film transistor (DTFT) which operates in the saturation mode prone to hot carrier injection. We propose a novel driving method to suppress the brightness variation by applying a high voltage to the source and drain of the DTFT during the non-emitting time which is inserted periodically for dimming the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display. Our experimental results show that the brightness variation can be reduced from 3.7 % to 1.4 % at the 63rd gray level by the proposed DTFT reset scheme.

Abstract:A concise pixel circuit with interleaved Emit signals is proposed for active matrix organic light‐emitting diode (AMOLED) displays, on the basis of low‐temperature polycrystalline silicon oxide (LTPO) TFTs. The oxide TFT can be re‐used for both initialization and threshold voltage extraction periods, using interleaved Emit signals of adjacent lines with overlapped waveforms. The proposed pixel circuit consists of 1 oxide TFT and 5 p‐type LTPS TFTs, while only 2~3 types of line‐by‐line scanning driving signals, i.e. the Emit signal and the Scan signal, are required. Implementation of the proposed pixel circuit shows that the occupation can be reduced to 40 μm × 56.7 μm. Furthermore, optimization of the pixel circuit shows the emission current error is less than 2.3% with threshold voltage variation of ± 0.5 V, while refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz can achieved.

Abstract:A novel pixel driving circuit for high resolution and high image quality organic light emitting diode on silicon three‐dimensional microdisplays is proposed in this paper. The pixel circuit is composed of four P‐channel MOSFETs and one capacitor. By sharing the data line and power line, it compensates the threshold voltage (V th ) variation of the driving transistor and then improves the image quality and operating speed. This pixel circuit is verified by SMIC 0.18 µm BCD process, and it is integrated into a pixel unit of 4*4.5 µm 2 . From post‐layout simulation, within ±10 mV of V th variation, the emission current deviation ranges only from −0.56% to 0.50% under 240 Hz frame rate, which is −18.4% to 22.3% in the traditional 2T1C pixel circuits.

Abstract:Etching residues of crystallized indium-tin oxide (ITO) films deteriorate thin-film transistor (TFT) characteristics and affect negatively the display images. Usability of active-matrix displays is inseparable from TFT backplane. Particularly, in large-area displays, reducing overlap area of gate and source lines can reduce crosstalk capacitance, resulting in uneven color defects. Deterioration mechanism of TFT characteristics is illuminated in this work. The ITO residues increase the internal stress of the gate layer, and deteriorate the TFT characteristics. In addition, the ITO residues lead to cracks and voids in the SiNx dielectric, and act as carrier traps. Orthogonal design is established herein to optimize deposition parameters of amorphous ITO films. Low power and high-water vapor flow during the sputter deposition can effectively suppress ITO crystallization and etching residues formation. TFT with optimized ITO film presents the best electrical performance, and affords images free from brightness variations and streak defects in display backplane. The output of this work offers a good avenue to develop advanced large-area displays applicable in vehicles in light of taking full advantage of existing equipment.

Abstract:A liquid crystal phase modulation technique based on the conventional LCD display architecture is proposed in this study. On the basis of the conventional VA-mode LCD display, this technique achieves 1domain alignment by changing the design of the ITO metal electrode, skips RGB color filter process, and doubles the cell gap of the VA-mode LCD. This technique can realize dynamic phase modulation in the range of 0~2S , without the need to redesign or remake a dedicated driver chip or use FPGA for control.
