Abstract:It remains unclear whether the emission center of ligand-encapsulated metal nanoclusters (MNCs) is the surface ligands or the metal core. In this paper, we simultaneously observed metal-centered and ligand-centered emissions in Ag nanoclusters. The contributions of the surface ligands and the metal core were individually investigated to understand the nature of AgNC photoemission. A new ligand synergistic emission effect was observed. The amino correlated nπ* state provides a pivot to bridge the carboxyl correlated ππ* and nπ* states to enhance the charge transfer efficiency between different surface electronic states. Consequently, the photoluminescence quantum yields were significantly improved (∼1 to ∼10%). Transient absorption studies revealed that decreasing the pH could expand the potential energy curve and generate a conical intersection. This would facilitate the charge transfer and relaxation of excited electrons via a radiative pathway, thereby enhancing the emission intensity. These new insights into the photoemission mechanisms of MNCs should stimulate additional experimental and theoretical studies and could benefit the molecular-level design of luminescent MNCs for optoelectronics and other applications.
Ultrasmall Size Silver Clusters: Molecular-like Structural Simulation and Absorption Spectra Calculation

Abstract:In this work,the geometric structures,electronic structures,and absorption spectra of various neutral and positively charged ultrasmall size silver clusters([Agm]n+,m=2-8,n=0-2),have been investigated using densi-ty functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory.The simulation results demonstrate that the elec-tronic energy level structures and absorption spectra of the ultrasmall size silver clusters are influenced by multiple factors,including size,symmetry,open-shell and closed-shell systems,and electric charges of clusters.Further-more,average binding energy calculations indicate that an increase in the size of neutral ultrasmall size silver clus-ters results in a gradual enhancement in their stability.However,positively charged ultrasmall size silver clusters are subject to the parity oscillations phenomenon,which means that the dominant configuration in the anionic polyhedral network is not necessarily the lowest-energy configuration.This study has led to the construction of a database of the geometrical structures,electronic structures,and absorption spectra of ultrasmall size silver clusters.This dataset has been created to identify the characteristic luminescence of ultrasmall size silver clusters in specific configurations in fluorescent glasses.Furthermore,the database will provide theoretical support data for expanding the structural and spectroscopic studies of ultrasmall size silver clusters in other types of inorganic as well as organic ligands.
Regulation of aggregation-induced emission properties of Ag(0)@Ag(I) rich−thiolate core-shell nanoclusters: Ligand assembly dominated

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is an effective strategy for improving the photoluminescence (PL) performance of metal nanoclusters (MNCs). However, the origin of AIE in MNCs is still not fully understood, which is pivotal for the design of AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Here, water soluble silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) with AIE properties were synthesized. These as-synthesized non-luminescent Ag NCs will become photoluminescent when transferred from water to ethanol, and the emission peak was redshifted from ∼560 to ∼600 nm and largely intensified with the addition of Cu2+. The addition of Cu2+ makes a big difference in the PL properties of Ag NCs. That is, the PL will be enhanced if Cu2+ is added with the sequence “Ag NCs + Cu2++EtOH.” In contrast, the PL will be quenched if Cu2+ is added with the sequence “Ag NCs + EtOH + Cu2+.” The PL was from the supramolecular clusters formed by the assembly of capping ligands on the confined surface of individual silver clusters through weak interactions. The addition of Cu2+ could regulate the assembly structure and further affect the energy lever (p-band) through space electron interactions. These results provide new insights into the AIE process in metal nanoclusters.

Abstract:Among the group 11 transition metal elements, Cu and Ag are widely studied due to their cost effectiveness and easy availability. However, the synergism between copper and silver is also very promising, exhibiting intriguing structures, properties, and applications. Nanoclusters, which are missing links between atoms and nanoparticles, are highly fluorescent due to their discrete energy levels. Their fluorescence can be efficiently tuned because of the synergistic behaviour of copper and silver. Furthermore, their fluorescence can be selectively altered in the presence of various analytes and sensing platforms, as reported by various groups. Moreover, copper clusters can be utilized for sensing silver while silver nanoclusters can be utilized for sensing ionic copper due to the strong interaction between copper and silver. Furthermore, DFT studies have been performed to understand the structural modification due to CuAg synergism. A concise summary of the synergism between copper and silver can open a new window of research for young scientists venturing into the field of environmental nanoscience.

Structural rearrangement of Ag 60 nanocluster endowing different luminescence performances

Abstract:It is well known that structure determines property, but obtaining a pair of silver nanoclusters with comparable structures to understand the structure-property relationship is a very challenging task. A new 60-nuclei silver nanocluster (SD/Ag60a) protected by a mixed-ligand shell of tBuS- and o-CH3OPhCOO- was obtained and characterized. Single crystal x-ray diffraction reveals that SD/Ag60a has an identical metal nuclearity and core-shell structural type to SD/Ag1 previously reported by our group, whereas the compositions of the core and shell have undergone a rearrangement from an Ag12 cuboctahedron core and an Ag48 rhombicuboctahedron shell in SD/Ag1 to an Ag14 rhombic dodecahedron core and an oval Ag46 shell in SD/Ag60a. The core enlargement from Ag12 to Ag14 originates from the replacement of two S2- in Ag12S15 by two Ag+, which gives a new Ag14S13 core. This result indicates that the metal frameworks of silver nanoclusters have some extent flexibility despite the same nuclearity, which can be influenced by ligands, solvents, anion templates, and others in the embryonic stage of the assembly. Interestingly, different core-shell architectures of Ag60 nanoclusters also significantly endow the different optical absorption bands, photocurrent-generating properties, and luminesecent behaviors. This work not only realizes the regulation of the core-shell structure of silver nanoclusters with the same nuclearity but also provides a comparable model for investigating the relationship of structure-photoelectric properties.

Anomalous Structural Transformation of Cu(I) Clusters into Multifunctional CuAg Nanoclusters

Abstract:We report an anomalous structural transformation of a Cu(I) cluster into two different types of copper-silver (CuAg) alloy nanoclusters. Different from previous reports, we demonstrate that under specifically designed reaction conditions, the Ag-doping could induce a substantial growth of the starting Cu15 and a Ag13Cu20 nanocluster was obtained via the unexpected insertion of an Ag13 kernel inside the Cu(I)-S shell. Ag13Cu20 demonstrates high activity to initiate the photopolymerization of previously hard-to-print inorganic polymers in 3D laser microprinting. Interestingly, a slight modification of the reaction condition leads to the formation of another Ag18-xCuxS (8≤x) nanocluster templated by a central S2- anion, which possesses a unique electronic structure compared to conventional template-free CuAg nanoclusters. Overall, this work unveils the intriguing doping chemistry of Cu clusters, as well as their capability to create different types of alloy nanoclusters with previously unobtainable structures and multifunctionality.

Photoluminescence Control by Atomically Precise Surface Metallization of C-centered Hexagold(i) Clusters Using N-heterocyclic Carbenes.

Abstract:The properties of metal clusters are highly dependent on their molecular surface structure. The aim of this study is to precisely metallize and rationally control the photoluminescence properties of a carbon(C)-centered hexagold(I) cluster (CAu6I) using N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with one pyridyl, or one or two picolyl pendants and a specific number of silver(I) ions at the cluster surface. The results suggest that the photoluminescence of the clusters depends highly on both the rigidity and coverage of the surface structure. In other words, the loss of structural rigidity significantly reduces the quantum yield (QY). The QY in CH2Cl2 is 0.04 for [(C)(Au-I-BIPc)(6)AgI3(CH3CN)(3)](BF4)(5) (BIPc = N-isopropyl-N'-2-picolylbenzimidazolylidene), a significant decrease from 0.86 for [(C)(Au-I-BIPy)(6)AgI2](BF4)(4) (BIPy = -Nisopropyl-N'-2-pyridylbenzimidazolylidene). This is due to the lower structural rigidity of the ligand BIPc because it contains a methylene linker. Increasing the number of capping Ag-I ions, i.e., the coverage of the surface structure, increases the phosphorescence efficiency. The QY for [(C)(Au-I-BIPc2)(6)Ag-4(I)(CH3CN)(2)](BF4)(6) (BIPc2 = N,N'-di(2-pyridyl)benzimidazolylidene) recovers to 0.40, 10-times that of the cluster with BIPc. Further theoretical calculations confirm the roles of Ag-I and NHC in the electronic structures. This study reveals the atomic-level surface structure-property relationships of heterometallic clusters.
Structure‐Dependent Photoluminescence and Chemiluminescence Emission Enhancement in Ag25 Nanoclusters

Abstract:This study explores how surface ligands affect the structure and luminescence of metal nanoclusters (NCs), focusing on three [Ag25(SPhCl)16−xClx(DPPB)6]2+ variants with different thiol and Cl ligand ratios. Ag25‐4Cl shows the highest photoluminescence and chemiluminescence, with significantly enhanced quantum yield due to structural compression by smaller Cl ligands. These findings suggest broader implications for NC technology in luminescence and radical‐scavenging applications. Surface ligands crucially influence the structure and luminescence of metal nanoclusters (NCs). In this study, three [Ag25(SPhCl)16−xClx(DPPB)6]2+ (x = 0 for Ag25, x = 1 for Ag25‐Cl, and x = 4 for Ag25‐4Cl) featuring thiol and Cl ligand combinations are synthesized and investigated. Ag25‐4Cl, which has the smallest number of rigid thiol ligands, exhibits the strongest photoluminescence (PL) and chemiluminescence (CL), and its PL quantum yield is 73.43% higher than that of Ag25. Structural analysis indicates that Cl ligands, being smaller and less sterically hindering than thiols, compress the motif layer towards the core, reducing non‐radiative transitions and boosting radiative ones to enhance PL. All three NCs exhibit CL in the presence of singlet oxygen, demonstrating the ability of the NCs to react with radicals and scavenge them. CL and radical scavenging experiments show that Ag25‐4Cl exhibits the highest CL and the lowest radical reaction ability, indicating that CL intensity of an NC depends more on its intrinsic luminescence ability and less on its ability to react with radicals. The regulation of luminescence by ligands and the CL and radical‐scavenging behavior of NCs are expected to be extended to other NC systems and related applications.

Giant Emission Enhancement of Solid‐State Gold Nanoclusters by Surface Engineering

Abstract:Ligand-induced surface restructuring with heteroatomic doping is used to precisely modify the surface of a prototypical [Au-25(SR1)(18)](-) cluster (1) while maintaining its icosahedral Au-13 core for the synthesis of a new bimetallic [Au19Cd3(SR2)(18)](-) cluster (2). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that six bidentate Au-2(SR1)(3) motifs (L2) attached to the Au-13 core of 1 were replaced by three quadridentate Au2Cd(SR2)(6) motifs (L4) to create a bimetallic cluster 2. Experimental and theoretical results demonstrate a stronger electronic interaction between the surface motifs (Au2Cd(SR2)(6)) and the Au-13 core, attributed to a more compact cluster structure and a larger energy gap of 2 compared to that of 1. These factors dramatically enhance the photoluminescence quantum efficiency and lifetime of crystal of the cluster 2. This work provides a new route for the design of a wide range of bimetallic/alloy metal nanoclusters with superior optoelectronic properties and functionality.

Abstract:Bimetallic noble metal nanoclusters (NCs) are an emerging topic of metal clusters due to their distinguishing characteristics compared to monometallic clusters. Doping of different noble atoms in other clusters is an effective strategy for tailoring their functionalities for specific applications and synergistic effects. Obtaining single-heteroatom doping is desirable but still very challenging to date. Herein, 2,4-dimethylbenzenthiol (2,4-DMBT) protected Ag/Au alloy NCs (ca. 2-3 nm) were synthesized via a wet chemical one-pot process. The effect of the number of Au atoms in Ag NCs on their optical properties and bandgap was investigated. We found that the change of the absorption peak positions of the Ag NCs was influenced by the presence of Au atoms. Besides, we found that the HOMO-LUMO peak has appeared without a significant change in cluster size during synthesis. Ag/Au alloy NCs are characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron transmission microscopy (STEM).

Abstract:Metallic nanoclusters (NCs) have molecular-like structures and unique physical and chemical properties, making them an interesting new class of luminescent nanomaterials with various applications in chemical sensing, bioimaging, optoelectronics, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), etc. However, weak photoluminescence (PL) limits the practical applications of NCs. Herein, an effective and facile strategy of enhancing the PL of NCs was developed using Ag shell-isolated nanoparticle (Ag SHIN)-enhanced luminescence platforms with tuned SHINs shell thicknesses. 3D-FDTD theoretical calculations along with femtosecond transient absorption and fluorescence decay measurements were performed to elucidate the enhancement mechanisms. Maximum enhancements of up to 231-fold for the [Au7Ag8(C≡CtBu)12]+ cluster and 126-fold for DNA-templated Ag NCs (DNA-Ag NCs) were achieved. We evidenced a novel and versatile method of achieving large PL enhancements with NCs with potential for practical biosensing applications for identifying target DNA in ultrasensitive surface analysis.

Abstract:Recent developments in optical imaging techniques, particularly multi-photon excitation microscopy that allows studies of biological interactions at a deep cellular level, have motivated intensive research in developing multi-photon absorption fluorophores. Biological tissues are optically transparent in the near-infrared region. Therefore, fluorophores that can absorb light in the near-infrared (NIR) region by multi-photon absorption are particularly useful in bio-imaging. For instance, photoluminescence from ligand-protected gold nanoclusters has drawn extensive research interest in the past decade due to their bright, non-blinking, stable emission and tunable from the blue to the NIR emission. In this work, using the control of single metal doping on silver nanoclusters (Ag25 protected by thiolate SR=2,4-dimethylbenzenethiol (DMBT) ligand), we aim to explore the effects of metal doping on (photo)stability and nonlinear optical response of liganded nanoclusters. We study two-photon excited photoluminescence and second harmonic response upon excitation in NIR (780-950 nm) range. A particular emphasis is paid to the effect of metal doping on the second-order nonlinear optical scattering properties (first hyperpolarizability, β(2ω)) of Ag25 nanoclusters. In addition, β(2ω) values are one order higher than the one reported for Au25 nanoclusters and represent the largest values ever reported for ligand-protected nanoclusters. Such enhanced hyperpolarizability leads to strong second harmonic response and renders them attractive targets in bioimaging.

Abstract:We prepare a series of MAg24(SR)(18) (M = Ag/Pd/Pt/Au) nanoclusters (NCs) with similar core-inner shell-outer shell structures and investigate their crystal and solution photoluminescence. The core silver atom replacement by the Pd/Pt/Au atom obviously tunes the geometric and electronic structures of Ag-25(SR)(18) NC. The crystal photoluminescence intensities sequence hints a core-atom-directing charge transfer from the ligands to the metal kernels. Both the calculated NPA charge and the measured Ag-inner (shell)-S-terrninal bond length support the proposed mechanism. Further experiments show the solvent influence on the NCs photoluminescence supported by the blue-shift of emissions of MAg24(SR)(18) NCs and the solvent-dependent photoluminescence intensity sequences. Especially, for PtAg24(SR)(18), the quantum yield is almost 100-fold greater in CH3CN (18.6%) than in CH2Cl2 (0.2%). However, the emission wavelengths of the series of NCs are barely influenced by the solvent type. This work indicates the importance of the core atom and the solvent to the photoluminescence of core-inner shell-outer shell silver NCs, having important implications for the photoluminescence mechanisms and tuning of noble metal nanoparticles.

Abstract:The intermetallic synergy plays a critical role in exploring the chemical-physical properties of metal nanoclusters. However, the controlled doping or layer-by-layer alloying of atom-precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) has long been a challenging pursuit. In this work, two novel alloy nanoclusters [PPh4]4[Ag32Cu18(PFBT)36] ((AgCu)50) and [PPh4]4[Au12Ag20Cu18(PFBT)36] (Au12(AgCu)38), where PFBT is pentafluorobenzenethiolate, with shell-by-shell configuration of M12@Ag20@Cu18(PFBT)36 (M = Ag/Au) were synthesized by a facile one-pot co-reduction method. Notably, a fingerprint library of [Ag50−xCux(PFBT)36]4− (x = 0 to 50) from Ag50 to Cu50 has been successfully established as revealed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of trimetallic Au12(AgCu)38 confirmed the layer-by-layer alloying under reducing conditions. What is more, (AgCu)50 and Au12(AgCu)38 both show broad photoluminescence (PL) peak in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window, and the Au doping in the innermost shell considerably enhances the photoluminescence intensity. This work not only offers an insight in the process of metal cluster alloying but also provides a platform to study the doping-directed PL properties in the multimetallic cluster system.

Abstract:Fine tuning nanoparticles with atomic precision is exciting and challenging and is critical for tuning the properties, understanding the structure-property correlation and determining the practical applications of nanoparticles. Some ultrasmall thiolated metal nanoparticles (metal nanoclusters) have been shown to be precisely doped, and even the protecting staple metal atom could be precisely reduced. However, the precise addition or reduction of the kernel atom while the other metal atoms in the nanocluster remain the same has not been successful until now, to the best of our knowledge. Here, by carefully selecting the protecting ligand with adequate steric hindrance, we synthesized a novel nanocluster in which the kernel can be regarded as that formed by the addition of two silver atoms to both ends of the Pt@Ag12 icosohedral kernel of the Ag24Pt(SR)18 (SR: thiolate) nanocluster, as revealed by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Interestingly, compared with the previously reported Ag24Pt(SR)18 nanocluster, the as-obtained novel bimetal nanocluster exhibits a similar absorption but a different electrochemical gap. One possible explanation for this result is that the kernel tuning does not essentially change the electronic structure, but obviously influences the charge on the Pt@Ag12 kernel, as demonstrated by natural population analysis, thus possibly resulting in the large electrochemical gap difference between the two nanoclusters. This work not only provides a novel strategy to tune metal nanoclusters but also reveals that the kernel change does not necessarily alter the optical and electrochemical gaps in a uniform manner, which has important implications for the structure-property correlation of nanoparticles.
Synthesis and Luminescence Properties of Two-Electron Bimetallic Cu–Ag and Cu–Au Nanoclusters via Copper Hydride Precursors

Abstract:The synthesis, structural characteristics, and photophysical properties of luminescent Cu-rich bimetallic superatomic clusters [12(S2CNnPr2)6(C≡CPh)4]+ (1a+), [12{S2P(OR)2}6(C≡CPh)4]+ (2+), (2a+ = iPr; 2b+ = nPr), [12{S2P(C2H4Ph)2}6(C≡CPh)4]+ (2c+), and [12{S2P(OnPr)2}6(C≡CPh)4]+ (3+) were studied. Compositionally uniform clusters 1+–3+ were isolated from the reaction of dithiolato-stabilized, polyhydrido copper clusters with phenylacetylene in the presence of heterometal salts. By using X-ray diffraction, the structures of 1a+, 2a+, 2b+, and 3+ were able to be determined. ESI–mass spectrometry and elemental analysis confirmed their compositions and purity. The structural characteristics of these clusters are similar with respect to displaying gold (or silver)-centered Cu12 cuboctahedra surrounded by six dithiocarbamate/dithiophosph(in)ate and four alkynyl ligands. The doping of Au and Ag atoms into the polyhydrido copper nanoclusters significantly enhances their PL quantum yields from 12 (0.58%) to 12 (55%) at ambient temperature in solution. Reversible Interconversion between Ag2 and Ag6 Clusters and Their Responsive Optical Properties

Abstract:The exploration of structural interconversion in clusters triggered by external stimuli has attracted significant interest due to its potential to elucidate structure-property relationships of metal clusters. In this study, two types of silver clusters, Ag2 and Ag6, are synthesized. Interestingly, the clusters exhibit reversible transformations in response to changes in the solvent conditions. The structures and optical properties of these clusters are thoroughly characterized using techniques such as mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and radioluminescence spectroscopy. While both Ag2 and Ag6 display excellent photoluminescence properties, Ag2 demonstrates superior performance in X-ray radioluminescence compared to Ag6. Flexible scintillator films fabricated from Ag2 clusters exhibit outstanding X-ray imaging capabilities, achieving a spatial resolution of 15.0 lp/mm and an impressive detection limit for an X-ray dose of 0.58 μGy s-1. This detection limit is nearly 10 times lower than the typical dose rate used in X-ray diagnostics (5.5 μGy s-1). This work introduces a novel approach for designing thiol-free silver clusters capable of solvent-dependent reversible interconversion, offering new insights into the development of silver clusters for advanced X-ray imaging applications.
Ag(I) Ion-Concentration-Dependent Dynamic Mechanism of Thiolactic-Acid-Capped Gold Nanoclusters Revealed by Fluorescence Spectra and Two-Dimensional Correlation Spectroscopy

Abstract:Based on fluorescence spectroscopy, being combined with several spectral analysis techniques including principal component analysis (PCA), two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS), and moving window 2D-COS, the study disclosed the structural variations of gold nanoclusters capped by thiolactic acid (AuNCs@TLA) induced by Ag(I) ions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were applied to monitor the morphology evolution of the surface and composition of the nanoclusters induced by Ag(I) ions. Several spectral components, centered at (790, 607) nm, (670, 590) nm, and (740, 670) nm were revealed by 2D-COS analysis, suggesting new luminescent species or groups were generated with the introduction of Ag(I) ions. A two-stage mechanism was revealed for the photoluminescence variations of AuNCs@TLA induced by Ag(I) ion. The first stage was characterized by the emission quench of 790 nm followed by the emerging emission of 607 nm, which was attributed to the anti-galvanic reaction; and the second stage featured by the noticeable growth of the emission's intensity around 670 nm as result of the AuNCs’ size effect. The present study will attract more focuses on near-infrared (NIR)-emitted metal nanoclusters and promote their synthesis and utilities.

Abstract:Ag@ZnS nanoparticles display enhanced photocatalytic efficiency and good photoelectric properties compared to their single-component counterparts in the process of forming a core-shell structure using an Ag cluster as the inner core of a ZnS outer shell. In this study, first-principles calculations were used to investigate the structural, electronic, and optical properties of Agn@(ZnS)42 (n = 6-16) core-shell nanocomposites. The calculated results show significant even-odd oscillations in the structural stability, that is, Ag@ZnS nanostructures with an even number of Agn core atoms are relatively more stable than those with an odd number of core atoms. The second-order differences in the total energies (Δ2E) and the core-shell interaction energy Ecs indicate that a Ag12@(ZnS)42 nanostructure is the most stable configuration. A significant red shift was found in Agn@(ZnS)42 nanoparticles in the absorption spectrum compared with a (ZnS)48 nanostructure, which is likely attributed to the strong electron interactions between the Ag core and the ZnS shell.
