Abstract:Dynamics of a multimode quantum dot laser with polarization-rotated optical feedback is investigated in a wide range of bias current. The results reveal that the laser is more sensitive to optical feedback when the polarization of feedback beam is rotated a large angle from the original polarization, which is different from the results in DFB lasers. Anticorrelated fluctuations between orthogonal polarizations are observed in a certain range of selected polarizations. Accordingly, dynamics in the total power can be weaker than that in a selected polarization. The anticorrelated polarization dynamics may be related to different polarizations of longitudinal modes.

Abstract:This paper investigates experimentally and numerically the nonlinear dynamics of an epitaxial quantum dot laser on silicon subjected to optoelectronic feedback. Experimental results showcase a diverse range of dynamics, encompassing square wave patterns, quasi-chaotic states, and mixed waveforms exhibiting fast and slow oscillations. These measurements unequivocally demonstrate that quantum dot lasers on silicon readily and stably generate a more extensive repertoire of nonlinear dynamics compared to quantum well lasers. This pronounced sensitivity of quantum dot lasers to optoelectronic feedback represents a notable departure from their inherent insensitivity to optical feedback arising from reflections. Moreover, based on the Ikeda-like model, our simulations illustrate that the inherent characteristics of quantum dot lasers on silicon enable rapid and diverse dynamic transformations in response to optoelectronic feedback. The emergence of these exotic dynamics paves the way for further applications like integrated optical clocks, optical logic, and optical computing.

Experimental Investigation on the Dynamics Characteristics of a Two-State Quantum Dot Laser under Optical Feedback

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the dynamics characteristics of a two-state quantum dot laser (TSQDL) subject to optical feedback. Firstly, we inspect the impact of the temperature on the power-current characteristics of the ground state (GS) lasing and the excited state (ES) lasing in the TSQDL operating at free-running. The results demonstrate that with the decrease in the temperature, the threshold current for GS lasing (IthGS) and the threshold current for ES lasing (IthES) decrease very slowly. There exists a current for GS quenching (IQGS), which is gradually increased with the decrease in the temperature. After introducing optical feedback, the overall trend of change is similar to those obtained under free-running. Next, through inspecting the time series and power spectrum of the output from the TSQDL under optical feedback, the dynamical characteristics of the TSQDL are investigated under different feedback ratios, and diverse dynamical states including quasi-chaos pulse package, chaos state, regular pulse package, quasi-period two, quasi-regular pulsing, and chaos regular pulse package have been observed. Finally, for the TSQDL biased at three different cases: lower than IthES, slightly higher than IthES, and higher than IthES, nonlinear dynamic state evolutions with the increase in feedback ratio are inspected, respectively. The results show that, for the TSQDL biased at lower than IthES, it presents an evolution route of stable state—quasi-chaos pulse package—chaos state—regular pulse package. For the TSQDL biased at slightly larger than IthES, it presents an evolution route of stable state—quasi-regular pulsing—quasi-period two—chaos regular pulse package. For the TSQDL biased at higher than IthES, the TSQDL always behaves stable state within the range of feedback ratio that the experiment can achieve. However, with the increase in optical feedback ratio, the number of longitudinal modes for GS lasing and ES lasing are changed.

Abstract:The standard two-mode rate equations are extended to discuss polarization behavior of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with optical feedback. In the rate equations, a logarithmic gain formula and unit step function are used to simulate the experimental conditions more truly. Our simulation results show that weak polarization-preserving feedback will cause multiple polarization switches (PSs) with increasing bias current; strong feedback can suppress PSs and make the VCSEL work in a single polarized mode. The case is similar when y-polarized feedback is considered. The PS point does not disappear even under strong x-polarized feedback. Bifurcation diagrams show that the interplay of PSs and delayed feedback makes the nonlinear dynamics of the two polarized modes more complex. If the feedback is large enough, both chaotic pulses due to feedback and low-frequency fluctuations due to gain competition emerge in the time traces of the two modes. Polarization modulation is also demonstrated when a quarterwave plate is added to the external cavity, which agrees with the experimental observations.

Abstract:The square-wave response of edge-emitting diode lasers subject to a delayed polarization-rotated optical feedback is studied in detail. Specifically, the polarization state of the feedback is rotated such that the natural laser mode is coupled into the orthogonal, unsupported mode. Square-wave self-modulated polarization intensities oscillating in antiphase are observed experimentally. We find numerically that these oscillations naturally appear for a broad range of values of parameters, provided that the feedback is sufficiently strong and the differential losses in the normally unsupported polarization mode are small. We then investigate the laser equations analytically and find that the square-wave oscillations are the result of a bifurcation phenomenon.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates the influence of external optical feedback on the polarization state of longitudinal modes in quasi-isotropic microchip Nd:YAG lasers. Under optical feedback, the polarization state of longitudinal modes in quasi-isotropic lasers relies strongly on the intracavity anisotropy loss and mode competition. When the intracavity anisotropy loss is small, external optical feedback can cause polarization switching and strong mode competition between two orthogonal linearly polarized eigenstates of one laser longitudinal mode, which leads to the distortion of laser intensity modulation waveform. The polarization switching is independent of the initial external cavity length. By increasing the intracavity anisotropy loss, one polarization eigenstate can be suppressed and the laser works in single-polarization state. A theoretical analysis based on the compound cavity model is presented, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. The results offer guidance to the development of laser feedback interferometers.

Abstract:A novel model of a semiconductor laser with optical feedback is presented, generalizing Lang-Kobayashi equations to the case of incoherent feedback. The equations are supplemented by a stochastic variable which models random phase difference between the field inside laser cavity and the feedback field. It is shown that for weak-to-moderate feedback the transition from coherent to incoherent feedback leads to replacement of dynamical chaos by almost stationary lasing with slightly fluctuating intensity. Nevertheless, incoherent feedback can lead to chaotic oscillations, but at considerably larger feedback levels.

Abstract:Quantum coherent feedback has been proven to be an efficient way to tune the dynamics of quantum optical systems and, recently, those of solid-state quantum circuits. Here, inspired by the recent progress of quantum feedback experiments, especially those in mesoscopic circuits, we prove that superconducting circuit QED systems, shunted with a coherent feedback loop, can change the dynamics of a superconducting transmission line resonator, i.e., a linear quantum cavity, and lead to strong on-chip nonlinear optical phenomena. We find that bistability can occur under the semiclassical approximation and photon antibunching can be shown in the quantum regime. Our study presents alternate perspectives for engineering nonlinear quantum dynamics on a chip.

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the polarization dynamics of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) subjected to negative optoelectronic feedback. As we vary the feedback delay and strength, the VCSEL exhibits interesting nonlinear dynamics in the two-linear polarized directions. The output instability and negative current modulation induced by delayed feedback can also cause polarization switching (PS) to happen. In addition, we investigate the case when the free-running VCSEL emits in the modulated-elliptical state and find that the laser experiences in succession the elliptical polarization, the x-mode polarization, and the mixed-mode polarization states with an increasing feedback strength.

Abstract:Compared with laser weak optical feedback, laser strong optical feedback can obtain nano-scale resolution without any electric subdivision. However, it is hard to stabilize the laser frequency owing to the strong feedback level high, which may insults in mode transformation or polarization flipping. A novel technology of dynamic modulation frequency stabilization method was presented. The key technologies and algorithms of zero point and reset compensation were studied systematically. Experimental results show that the uniform modulation and equal amplitude fringes are obtained. The frequency stabilization problem of strong optical feedback system is resolved successfully by using the dynamic modulation frequency stabilization technology. The result plays an important role in developing high accuracy displacement measurement system with strong optical feedback.

Abstract:This paper presents a non-Markovian coherent feedback scheme to control single quantum dot systems. The feedback loop is closed via a quantum tunneling junction between the natural source and drain baths of the quantum dot. The exact feedback-controlled non-Markovian Langevin equation is derived for describing the dynamics of the quantum dot. To deal with the nonlinear memory function in the Langevin equation, we analyze the Green's function-based root locus, from which we show that the decoherence of the quantum dot can be suppressed via increasing the feedback coupling strength. This effectiveness of decoherence suppression induced by non-Markovian coherent feedback is verified by an example of single quantum dot systems.

Abstract:High-frequency modulation of laser output intensity is studied with asymmetric feedback induced by the misalignment of an external feedback reflector in an orthogonal polarized dual frequency laser. The fringe frequency of the optical feedback system is seven times higher than that of a conventional optical feedback system, due to multiple feedback effects. The output characteristics of two orthogonal polarized modes are also investigated. Mode competition is observed between the two modes. When initial intensities of the two modes are unequal, the mode competition will be strong. The difference in initial intensity between the two orthogonally polarized modes plays an important role in the mode competition with optical feedback. Experimental results are presented, as well as a theoretical explanation. The high-frequency modulation of laser intensity can greatly increase the resolution of an optical feedback sensing system.

Abstract:A new method to study the dynamic characteristics in semiconductor lasers with external optical feedback is presented.The semiconductor lasers with external optical feedback which is weak to moderate feedback is analyzed based on the visual simulation software.The results of the simulation show that for a small amount of optical feedback,the system is periodic;with the increasing of the optical feedback,the output of the system goes into chaos from its periodic state.And the chaos control via high frequency modulation is studied.Compared with the simulation technology which is based on the high-level language,using this simulation software can avoid complicated programming and can modify the parameter of the system easily.

Abstract:The polarization dynamics of a quasi-isotropic single-mode laser subjected to multiple optical feedback is presented. The variable duty cycle of two eigenstates is observed in high-frequency optical fringes. The high-frequency optical fringes are induced by the multiple reflections in the asymmetry feedback cavity. The duty cycle of two eigenstates can be controlled easily by adjusting the position of polarization flipping due to the residual stress of laser mirror. Particularly, when the frequency difference results from residual stress is reduced to 1.5MHz, the position of polarization flipping moves to the edge of each fringe which can be used to measure small displacement with direction sensitivity and high resolution. Abstract:We investigate the solution structure and dynamics of the double filtered optical feedback (DFOF) laser, a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) laser system that receives delayed FOF from two filter loops. Two filters are utilized in optical communication applications to regulate and stabilize the laser output, which served as the inspiration for this study. Delay differential equations for the inversion of the QD laser with the two filters make up the DFOF laser's overall mathematical model. Since consistent operation of the laser source is crucial for optical communication applications, our analysis concentrates on continuous-wave DFOF QD laser systems. These fundamental answers, referred to as external filtered modes (EFMs), which has a considerable impact on the structure and stability of the EFMs and, consequently, the laser's performance as compared to the single FOF QD laser. The parameter Ceff is a measure of the interference between the two filter fields, and it is identified as a key to the EFM structure. To analyse how the structure and stability of the EFMs depend on all the filter and feedback loop parameters, we make extensive use of the EFM surface in (Ω(ωs), Ceff, Ys)-space of frequency s, filter phase difference Ceff, and population inversion Ys of the QD laser. In general, the EFM surface is the natural object that should be taken into account to comprehend the dynamical characteristics of the DFOF laser. Overall, our study in a QD laser output with constant amplitude and frequency. The time delay suppression is dependent on the spectral width Ʌ of the filter and how far it is from the solitary laser frequency, according to numerical calculations.

Abstract:Time-delayed optical feedback is known to trigger a wide variety of complex dynamical behavior in semiconductor lasers. Adding a second optical feedback loop is naturally expected to further increase the complexity of the system and its dynamics, but due to interference between the two feedback arms, it was also quickly identified as a way to improve the laser stability. While these two aspects have already been investigated, the influence of the feedback phases, i.e., sub-wavelength changes in the mirror positions, on the laser behavior still remains to be thoroughly studied, despite indications that this parameter could have a significant impact. Here, we analyze the effect of the feedback phase on the laser stability in a dual-feedback configuration. We show an increased sensitivity of the laser system to feedback phase changes when two-feedback loops are present and clarify the interplay between the frequency shift induced by the feedback and the interferometric effect between the two feedback arms.

Abstract:Optical feedback exists in most laser configurations and strongly affects laser performances depending on the feedback strength, length, and phase. In this paper, we investigate the frequency comb behaviour of a semiconductor quantum cascade laser emitting around 4.2 THz with external optical feedback. A periodic evolution of the laser inter-mode beatnote from single-line to multiple-line structures is experimentally observed with a minor change of optical feedback length (phase) on the wavelength scale. The comb stability of the laser with feedback is also measured and compared with the same laser without feedback. Furthermore, our simulations reveal that the dynamical oscillations invoked by optical feedback are responsible for the measured multiple-line beatnotes. It is found that the characteristic feedback period is determined by the half wavelength of the laser, while the comb operation is maintained at most feedback length positions. Therefore, terahertz quantum cascade laser combs are robust against the minor position vibration of the feedback mirror in practice, owing to the much smaller feedback phase change than that of common near-infrared laser diodes.
