Abstract:Based on the knowledge-based view (KBV), we investigate how and under what conditions knowledge search, including problemistic and slack searches, affects radical and incremental innovation. Using a data set composed of 247 Chinese firms, this study finds that slack search promotes radical and incremental innovation directly while problemistic search can positively affect radical and incremental innovation by the mediating role of knowledge integration capability (KIC). In addition, learning inertia strengthens the positive effect of problemistic search on KIC. This paper primarily contributes to innovation literature by clarifying and verifying how problemistic and slack searches affect radical and incremental innovation from the combined perspective of knowledge inertia and KIC. It also creates a foundation for further empirical investigation by explaining why existing studies have different views on the impacts of knowledge search on firm innovation.

Abstract:Geographical knowledge search and innovation have attracted much attention in recent years. Yet the existing literature placed much emphasis on the way firms search for new ideas and knowledge as well as the geographical dimensions of knowledge sourcing without taking accounting into the nature and characteristics of knowledge per se. We examine the relationship between knowledge search and product innovation in both low and high-tech industry with a survey data from China. While both internal and external knowledge search are conducive to product innovation of high-tech firms, only external knowledge search is valuable for low-tech firms. External unrelated knowledge is significant for innovation of high-tech firms whereas external related knowledge search is significantly enough for low-tech firms. It highlights the importance of knowledge relatedness in innovation and appeals a shift of theoretical focus from how to search' and where to search' to what to search' in the process of innovation.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to explore the impact of organizational search (local and boundary-spanning search) on business model innovation (efficiency-centered/novelty-centered business model innovation) and the moderating role of knowledge inertia between them. Design/methodology/approach The relationships are examined through data provided by a sample of Chinese firms and by multiple hierarchical regressions. Findings Local search has a stronger effect on efficiency-centered business model innovation, whereas boundary-spanning search plays a stronger role in novelty-centered business model innovation. Knowledge inertia strengthens the effect of local search on efficiency-centered business model innovation but weakens the effect of boundary-spanning search on efficiency-centered business model innovation and the effect of local search on novelty-centered business model innovation. Practical implications The findings enable firms' managers to understand the subtle ways in which organizational search interacts with knowledge inertia to affect business model innovation and may help them to make knowledge management efforts to harvest the full value of organizational search. Originality/value Previous studies have not examined the effect of different organizational search on different business model innovation from knowledge management perspective. With knowledge inertia as the moderator, the results reveal the contingent impact mechanism of organizational search on business model innovation, the findings provide fresh evidence that can bridge the gap between knowledge management and business model innovation.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show that the high learning ability associated with innovative firms enables these firms to conduct a broad knowledge search based on a knowledge transfer perspective. This paper further shows that knowledge tacitness and relationship between knowledge senders and receivers will accentuate this positive relationship. Design/methodology/approach To test the proposed model, a pooled panel data set based on 102 Korean firms that participated in three waves of National Korean Innovation Surveys conducted in 2002, 2005, and 2008 is constructed. Since the independent variables are lagged in the analysis, the panel data comprised 204 firm-year observations of the 102 firms. Generalized estimating equations were used to analyze the effect of innovation on knowledge search breadth. Findings The authors found that absorptive capacity mediated the relationship between innovation and knowledge search breadth. This mediating relationship was stronger when a firm is not affiliated with any business group and operates in the high-technology industry. Research limitations/implications This paper showed that innovation is not only a consequence of knowledge search as found in existing literature, but also is a precursor to knowledge search. Originality/value This paper developed a novel theoretical model on innovation and knowledge search that highlights a virtuous cycle between innovation and knowledge search. Methodologically, the pooled panel data controlled for lagged effect and enhanced efficiency of econometric models, thus offered several advantages over cross-sectional data.
Managing External Knowledge Search: the Multiple and Contingent Roles of Absorptive Capacity.

Abstract:Nowadays, it is widely accepted that the search for external knowledge is critical to firm innovation performance. However, a framework to systematically demonstrate what factors interactively influence a firm's openness in innovation search is still in lack. In this study, taking a perspective of absorptive capacity for innovation search, we develop an integrative framework with three-way interaction to explore how absorptive capacity, financial slack, and industrial competition shape a firm's external knowledge search behaviour. GLS regression is adopted to examine the model with a balanced 10-year panel dataset of 298 manufacturing firms who publicly traded in the USA. The results reveal that both direct and indirect effects of absorptive capacity on external knowledge search are contingent upon the degree of industrial competition, and will be diminished for firms embedded in highly competitive industries. Directions for future research and managerial implications are further discussed.

Abstract:Will small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in emerging economies search more deeply or search more broadly for product innovation at high levels of environmental turbulence? In answering this question, unlike prior studies that treat search depth and search breadth as separate variables to measure firms' external knowledge search strategy, this study introduces a new concept, external search towards depth-dominance, to capture the trade-off between search depth and search breadth for SMEs in a resource-constrained context. Using data on 491 Chinese manufacturing SMEs, we find that SMEs search more deeply at high levels of technological and market turbulence. Moreover, the positive relationship between perceived technological turbulence (or perceived market turbulence) and external search towards depth-dominance is stronger when the differentiation propensity of a firm's competitive strategy is lower. The findings contribute to the understanding of innovation search in a resource-constrained context and the context specificity of innovation search.

Abstract:While a great deal of literature has paid attention to knowledge spillover on innovation, this study argues that geographical knowledge search that lays much emphasis on firm strategies merits more attention. This paper examines the effect of geographical knowledge search strategies, such as local/non-local search depth and local/non-local search breadth on product innovation. We reveal that while local search depth and breadth as well as non-local search breadth exert a significant influence, non-local search depth produces a negative impact on product innovation. Our research suggests that clustering firms' geographical knowledge search strategies and R&D intensity should be highlighted to understand their product innovation.

Abstract:Prior studies implicitly assume that knowledge search modes are homogeneous, and little is known about the impacts of specific search modes on innovation. Drawing upon the knowledge search literature, we differentiate among four types of search modes and analyze their impacts on innovation performance. Moreover, we enrich the theoretical framework by recognising the moderating role of strategic R&D orientation in affecting the relationship between specific types of search modes and innovation performance. Using a unique dataset of 418 Chinese firms, we find that, except for inward licensing, value chain search, capital search, and industry-university-research institute collaboration (IUR collaboration) exert positive effects on innovation performance. Moreover, the empirical results indicate that a strategic R&D orientation amplifies the positive effects of value chain search and IUR collaboration while it mitigates the negative effect of inward licensing on innovation performance.

Abstract:The effects of searching for external knowledge on firm innovation vary, as demonstrated by evidence reporting positive linear, negative linear, or curvilinear relationships. We use ambidexterity theory to explain how the exploratory and exploitative aspects of knowledge search and strategic intent can complement each other. Specifically, we theorize that a firm’s dominant logic creates an overall strategic intent – exploration or exploitation – through the firm’s structured interpretation and use of information, which creates a differential effect on the relationship between search practices and firm innovation. In particular, exploratory intent accentuates the positive effects of external search by enabling the assimilation of external knowledge, while an exploitative intent attenuates the positive effects of a search by limiting the use of external information to improving current products. Analyzing firm-level survey, financial information, and the number of patents of 380 firms, we provide empirical support for the effects of a dominant strategic intent on external searches and firm innovation.

Abstract:Purpose More enterprises adopt open innovation by breaking technological or organizational boundaries to seek internal and external knowledge when they face a fiercely competitive environment, complex market demands, and increasingly rapid technological change. In this context, a knowledge search strategy is regarded as an effective means of obtaining inside and outside resources and an important way to break the innovation bottleneck. Moreover, information technology (IT) is deemed an important asset for sourcing knowledge, whereas absorptive capacity is seen as an indispensable ability for utilizing novel knowledge. Thus, this paper aims to test the role of knowledge search in open innovation and examine the mediating effect of absorptive capacity and the moderating effect of IT capability. Design/methodology/approach Using a sample of 1,088 Chinese firms’ data collected by the World Bank in 2012, this paper employs logistic regression to test the hypotheses. Findings This study finds that local and boundary-spanning search strategies positively influence both product and process innovation, and absorptive capacity has a mediating role in the relationships between knowledge search and product and process innovation. Moreover, IT capability has a positive moderating effect on the relationship between local search and innovation performance; however, IT capability strengthens the relationship between boundary-spanning search and process innovation while weakens that between boundary-spanning search and product innovation. Originality/value This study explores the impact of different knowledge search behaviors on different types of innovation and probes the role of absorptive capacity and IT capability in mediating and moderating the above relationships. By drawing on knowledge-based theory and cognitive-developmental theory, this paper provides a novel perspective to explain the mechanism between knowledge search and innovation performance.

Abstract:Under the background of open innovation , external knowledge search has been the focus in the field of innovation . Considering the fact that few studies explore the influencing mechanism of external knowledge search and the lack of empirical tests for Chinese firms , this study investigates the boundary condition and the influencing mechanism of external knowledge search ( breadth and depth ) from external market environment and internal innovation strategy .In a questionnaire survey of 294 Chinese firms, this study employs confirmatory factor analysis to test the reliability and validity of the measurements , and adopts hierarchical moderated regression to examine the hypotheses .Results show that: ①both types of search channel ( search breadth) and the strength of search on the specific channel (search depth) exert significant linear effects on innovation perform-ance, which means there is no significant overly search problem;②the match of external knowledge search and market environ-ments ( competition intensity and market dynamism ) significantly affect innovation performance .In the market with fierce compe-titions, breadth search is more effective;in the more dynamic market that exists high varies of consumer demands and product technologies , depth search is more effective;and ③the match of external knowledge search and innovation strategy significantly influences innovation performance , and depth search and exploitative innovation interactively affect innovation performance .

Abstract:Firms today thrive on innovation. Knowledge exploration, the nonlocal search for new knowledge beyond the firm's current expertise, is posited to be critical for innovation. This paper seeks to contribute to the research on knowledge exploration in two ways. First, this paper provides a comprehensive review of key empirical studies on knowledge exploration and innovation. Second, this paper proposes a recombinatory search framework of innovation to reconceptualise extant understanding of knowledge exploration on innovation. This new framework focusses on the evolution of the benefits and costs of knowledge exploration, and puts forward an inverse S-curve proposition between knowledge exploration and innovation. Two company cases, IBM and Procter & Gamble, are then used to illustrate the new proposition.

Abstract:Based on the attention theory, this paper divides the external knowledge search process into two parts:search selection and selection intensity, and empirically explores the impact of local knowledge search and interna-tional knowledge search on innovation performance, and the contingency role of search effort and search persis-tence. The result shows that local knowledge search and international knowledge search both have a positive rela-tionship with innovation performance, and knowledge sourcing from international markets has greater consequences on innovation performance compared to knowledge sourcing from local markets. Otherwise, level of search intensi-ty must fit the selected location of search to maximize new product introductions. Compared to searching in local markets, firms should conduct more effortful and persistent searches in international markets.

Abstract:Open innovation has emerged as the main mode for firms. However, existing research doesn't uncover the question whether firms should and are able to implement local and international knowledge search simulta-neously, and under what conditions is more beneficial. This paper integrates organizational ambidexterity and exter-nal knowledge search theory to define the concept of balance and combined dimensions of external knowledge search ambidexterity, and empirically tests their impact on innovation performance and the moderating effect of in-novation complexity and industrial competition. Based on survey data of 219 Chinese manufacturing firms, we find that balance and combined dimensions of external knowledge search ambidexterity both have a positive im-pact on innovation performance, and innovation complexity and industrial competition both positively moderate their relationships.

Abstract:Innovation is one aspect of the pursuit of the harmonious development of the environment, economy, and society. Although prior research has examined the factors that influence corporate innovation, how external knowledge search affects it remains unclear. We contribute to this literature by examining how knowledge searches influence firms’ innovation performance from a knowledge-based point of view and organizational search theory. We utilized meta-analysis to conduct empirical testing on 15,059 samples from 58 independent studies. The conclusions are as follows: first, the overall test showed a significant positive correlation between external knowledge search and firm innovation performance; second, the group test shows that the positive impact of external knowledge search on the innovation performance of mature enterprises is more obvious; scaled measurement and collectivism have more significant influences on the relationship between external knowledge search and firm innovation performance. Further research concluded that a breadth search could provide higher innovation performance than a depth search. Meanwhile, the same results were obtained in the subgroup tests of start-ups, non-high-tech enterprises, high-tech enterprises, scale measurement, and collectivism. Finally, both balanced knowledge search and joint knowledge searches significantly improved the innovation performance of enterprises, and the innovation effect brought by balanced knowledge search is more prominent than the latter.

Does Formal Knowledge Search Depth Benefit Chinese Firms’ Innovation Performance? Effects of Network Centrality, Structural Holes, and Knowledge Tacitness

Abstract:Accessing external knowledge is an important factor in successful innovation. Knowledge search is an issue of concern for Chinese firms because many firms generally have relatively weak research and development (R&D) and innovation capabilities that cannot support innovative development through mere internal innovations. This study examines the interactive effects of network centrality, structural holes, and knowledge tacitness when formal knowledge search depth (FKSD) affects innovation performance from the perspective of formal/informal knowledge search. A survey of 161 firms in China suggests that FKSD positively affects innovation performance, and the effect is positively moderated by network centrality. Given high knowledge tacitness, FKSD is more effective in fostering innovation performance when firms’ network centrality is higher. Furthermore, high knowledge tacitness results in rich structural holes negatively moderating the effect of FKSD on innovation performance, whereas low tacitness generates a positive moderating role. This indicates that Chinese firms may consider using more formal search channels to increase external knowledge search depth and to dynamically adjust the depth of such a formal search or the mode of network structural embeddedness according to the degree of knowledge tacitness.

Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the inverted U-shaped relationship between external search in the collaboration network and firm innovation outcomes. It also seeks to explore whether these curvilinear relationships are moderated by the network centrality and structural holes in the knowledge network.Design/methodology/approachIn this empirical research, the authors collected a sample of patents in the smartphone industry over the period of 2000-2017. Then the authors examined the direct roles of external search breadth and depth in the collaboration network and the moderating role of network embeddedness in the knowledge network by using negative binomial regression.FindingsResults found that external search in the collaboration network contributes more to firm innovation outcomes when the breadth and depth of the external search are moderate rather than high or low. Furthermore, both network centrality and structural holes in the knowledge network have positive effects on the external search breadth – innovation outcomes and external search depth – innovation outcomes relationships.Research limitations/implicationsThe authors collected the patent data within the single industry and excluded other types of industries. This may limit the generalization of the findings.Practical implicationsThe paper has practical implications for adopting appropriate search strategies in the collaboration network and developing a better understanding of the effect of network embeddedness in the knowledge network on firm innovation outcomes. The findings suggest future directions for technology-intensive industries to improve their innovation output.Originality/valueThis study adds value to open innovation literature by pointing out a curvilinear relationship (inverted U-shaped) between external search breadth/depth and innovation outcomes in collaboration networks, in contrast to studies focused on firms’ external collaboration strategies in a certain industry context. Abstract:PurposeThis paper aims to analyze the extent to which the influence of external knowledge search activities on firms’ incremental innovation capability, and the moderating roles of the relatedness between the partners’ technological bases and a firm’s network embeddedness in the innovation network.Design/methodology/approachIn this empirical research, the authors collected a sample of patents in the UAV industry over the period of 2004–2018. Then the authors examined the direct role of external knowledge search on firms’ incremental innovation capability and the joint moderating effects of technological proximity and network embeddedness.FindingsWe found that external knowledge search in innovation networks positively affects firms’ incremental innovation capability. Moreover, we discovered that high technological proximity to other peers positively strengthens the impact of firms’ external knowledge search on their incremental innovation capability. Finally, the findings suggested that the relationship between a firm’s external knowledge search activities and its incremental innovation capability is stronger for high technological proximity coupled with high network centrality or poor structural holes in innovation networks.Originality/valueThis study adds value to open innovation literature by pointing out a positive relationship between external knowledge search and firm incremental innovation capability. Furthermore, this study reinforces the key joint contingent roles of technological proximity and network embeddedness. This study provides a valuable theoretical framework of incremental innovation capability determinants by connecting the different perspectives.
