Abstract:Business model innovation (BMI) is a key source of innovation that may create competitive advantage for focal firms. Drawing insights from an activity system perspective of BMI, we argue that firm dominant logic promotes both novelty- and efficiency-centered BMI and the two types of BMI influence firm performance in different ways (that is, novelty-centered BMI hinders short-term performance but efficiency-centered BMI improves short-term performance). We further investigate the boundary condition of TMT political ties as one type of providers of privileged resources and information, and propose that while TMT political ties promote the effect of dominant logic on BMI, they mitigate the influence of BMI on firm performance. We examine proposed hypotheses based on a sample of 189 Chinese firms and find substantial support. This study thus contributes to both the BMI and dominant logic literature.
