Abstract:We examine how chief executive officer (CEO) narcissism affects the organizational ambidexterity of the firm. We theorize firms led by more-narcissistic CEOs are less likely to achieve organizational ambidexterity because the narcissistic personality constrains the CEOs in performing differentiating and integrating practices of exploration and exploitation. Moreover, this negative relationship between CEO narcissism and organizational ambidexterity is weakened if the focal CEO is more powerful. However, firm reputation amplifies this negative effect, such that, the higher the reputation of the firm, it will be more difficult in achieving ambidexterity if led by a narcissistic CEO. Our findings provide considerable support for theory. This study introduces personality theories to research on the micro-foundations of organizational ambidexterity antecedents.
