Abstract:Based on conservation of resources theory and job demands-resources model, this study investigated the mediation effect of emotional exhaustion on the relationship between family interference with work and job performance, as well as the two-stage boundary conditions of career calling. By employing a multi-source design, we found that the negative effect of family interference with work on job performance was mediated by emotional exhaustion, and career calling moderated both the two stages in the mediation in that it intensified the positive effect between family interference with work and emotional exhaustion but weakened the negative effect between emotional exhaustion and job performance. Theoretical implications for literature on the relationship between conflict and performance as well as the multi-face of career calling are discussed.
