Abstract:In this research, we propose leader humility plays an important role in improving employee well-being. Integrating studies related to well-being and leadership, we investigate the relationship between leader humility and employee well-being, identifying employee humility as the mediator based on social information process theory. In addition, we suggest perceptions of leader effectiveness moderate these relationships. In this study, we used a scenario experiment (Study 1 including a sample of 153 MBA students from a southeast university in China) and a survey study (Study 2 involving 228 employees) to test our hypothesized moderated-mediation model. The results show that leader humility is positively related to employee well-being. Employee humility mediates leader humility and employee well-being with the exception of emotional exhaustion. Moreover, we found that the effect of leader humility on employee humility and the indirect effect of leader humility on employee job satisfaction and work engagement is stronger under high perceptions of leader effectiveness. In discussion, we propose theoretical implications, p¬¬ractical implications, and future research directions.
