Abstract:When pursuing leading technologies, high-tech companies are constantly challenged by two types of R&D decisions. One aims to balance exploration and exploitation along the technological boundary, and the other aims to balance internal and external resources along the organizational boundary. Cross-boundary ambidexterity, defined as the ability of a firm to reconfigure internal and external resources so as to juxtapose exploration and exploitation, helps to establish the interdependencies between these two R&D decisions and is especially crucial to growth-oriented high-tech companies. This work conducts a longitudinal case study on a representative growth-oriented high-tech Chinese firm during 2006 to 2017 to uncover the dynamic building processes of cross-boundary ambidexterity. We found that the dynamic building processes of cross-boundary ambidexterity in the case company is characterized as “internal exploration”, “internal exploitation + external exploration” and “internal exploitation + external exploitation” during the technology emerging, growing, and maturing stages. These findings help to deepen our understanding on the process and outcome of cross-boundary collaboration, and provide valuable suggestions for growth-oriented high-tech firms on how to make efficient R&D decisions.
