Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to focus on the cultural cognition of ChineseZhong-yongthinking, which is deeply rooted in Chinese Confucius culture, and to examine how entrepreneurs’Zhong-yongthinking is related to new venture performance throughguanxinetwork, and also examine how environmental turbulence affects the influencing mechanism.Design/methodology/approachThis paper follows an empirical design. Data are collected from a survey administered to entrepreneurs in new ventures of China. Regression analysis is used to test the hypothesis.FindingsResults show that entrepreneurs’Zhong-yongthinking is positively related toguanxiand new venture performance, andguanximediates the relationship between entrepreneurs’Zhong-yongthinking and new venture performance. In addition, environmental turbulence moderates the relationship between entrepreneurs’Zhong-yongthinking andguanxisuch that the relationship is stronger under higher technological turbulence or lower market turbulence.Research limitations/implicationsThis research uses cross-sectional data, so causal conclusions cannot be made. In addition, more moderators should be considered.Practical implicationsThe present study enriches the understanding of how entrepreneurs’Zhong-yongthinking affects new ventures, which helps entrepreneur understand how to strategize according to external environment and develop what kind of cognitive style to deal with complex situation of their own venture.Originality/valueThis study is a pioneer in exploring non-Western cognitive style–Zhong-yongthinking in entrepreneurial context. It not only enriches the understanding of how Chinese wisdom affects organizational strategy and organizational performance but also advances the cognition research in the field of entrepreneurship.

Abstract:Studies on entrepreneurial development have been focused in singular dimensions,such as personality characteristics,entrepreneurial environment etc.,but entrepreneurial development is a complicated process influenced by various factors.By exploratory analysis,we investigate elements in the develop process of local entrepreneurs,sort elements of various dimensions into an analytical framework,and exploit the structure of them.We conducted a three-stage survey of individual entrepreneurs for 2 years,and the following conclusions were drawn: the elements in entrepreneurial development can be classified to 7 types and integrated into an analytical framework;the new venture initiations of most entrepreneurs are influenced by 2 to 6 factors;personality characteristics is the most significant among all the elements.

Abstract:Introduction:In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, innovation has become a crucial factor for the success of entrepreneurial ventures in China. However, the mechanisms underlying the promotion of innovation by entrepreneurs are not yet fully understood. Drawing on self-determination theory, this study develops a comprehensive "motivation-behaviors-performance" model to examine the relationship between entrepreneurs' felt responsibility for constructive change and ventures' innovation performance.Methods:Two waves of questionnaire surveys with a sample of 376 entrepreneurs in East China were conducted. Hierarchical regression analysis was performed to test the hypotheses.Results:The empirical findings demonstrate that entrepreneurs' felt responsibility for constructive change is a key driver of innovation performance in ventures. Furthermore, external learning, encompassing technological and market learning, serves as a mediator for the positive link between entrepreneurs' felt responsibility and innovation performance. The study also reveals that entrepreneurs' perception of shared vision moderates the relationships between entrepreneurs' felt responsibility and both technological and market learning, such that the relationships are stronger when the perception of shared vision is higher.Discussion:These results yield important contributions to the entrepreneurial psychology research and self-determination theory. The study also has managerial implications for entrepreneurs aiming to enhance ventures' innovation performance.

Abstract:PurposeThis study aims to use the Timmons model to identify the pattern of entrepreneurial activity at micro‐level in China.Design/methodology/approachThe paper employs a self‐administered questionnaire survey approach, involving a sample of MBA students and general public in China.FindingsThe analysis suggests that personality characteristics, cultural environment and economic environment are external factors influencing new venture creation.Practical implicationsThe findings of this study suggest that supportive cultural environment and economic environment is more important for MBA entrepreneurs than for general public to encourage the former to start new businesses as they bear higher entrepreneurial opportunity cost.Originality/valueThe paper extends the macro approach of the GEM China Report to examine entrepreneurial activity in China at micro‐level.

Abstract:Abstract To address the lacuna of how informal institutions like Buddhism impact social entrepreneurship in different regions within a nation, this research draws on the social entrepreneurship literature and the regional Buddhist research to propose a mediating framework where the percentage of Buddhist entrepreneurs in a region is positively associated both with the level of prosocial behaviors such as charity, due to the values of Buddhism, and with the probability of establishing businesses in a less-developed region. It further proposes that charitable behaviors mediate the relationship between the percentage of Buddhist entrepreneurs in a region and establishing businesses in less-developed regions. This mediating effect is attributed to the mechanism that charitable behaviors absorb the limited resources of entrepreneurs, reducing their resources for establishing businesses in less-developed regions. We test these hypotheses on nationwide surveys of founders of private enterprises and find support for this mediating view. Broad implications for theoretical and empirical research are discussed.

Abstract:Despite the fact that the resource-based view has drawn a great deal of attention in studying new ventures, our understanding on resource management in the emerging economies is limited and there are many unsolved issues. In this paper, theoretical reasoning approach is applied to analyze the relationship between the entrepreneurial resources and the organizational capabilities (including operating and dynamic capabilities) for new ventures. An empirical study in the context of emerging economy in China is conducted to verify the theoretical reasoning. As information technology becomes a key element for new ventures, the enterprise resources relevant to the network technology and e-commerce are especially focused, as well as the impact of information acquisition on the resource combination. The results from the theoretical and empirical study have shown that resource combination mediates the relationship of entrepreneurial resources and organizational capability. It is also found that the information acquisition affects the organizational capabilities significantly; however, there is an inverted U-shape relationship between the information acquisition and the resource combination in emerging economies .

Abstract:PurposeSocial network theory emphasizes that, to acquire needed resources, new ventures should cultivate industrial connections (intra-industry ties and extra-industry ties). In the meanwhile human capital theory focuses on entrepreneurs' employment experience, especially with respect to its breadth and depth. This study examines ties and experience to determine whether, in combination, they have positive or negative effects on resource acquisition in new ventures.Design/methodology/approachThis study tests research hypotheses using questionnaire survey data with a sample of entrepreneurs in new ventures. Multivariate regression analysis is used to analyze the data.FindingsCombining intra-industry ties and experience breadth or extra-industry ties and experience depth affects resource acquisition positively, whereas combining intra-industry ties and experience depth or extra-industry ties and experience breadth affects resource acquisition negatively.Research limitations/implicationsConclusions may be constrained by the limited sample size and source. Rather, the impact of the study lies in its identification of the effects of interaction between network ties and entrepreneurs' experience on resource acquisition. Future research can explore the effects of interaction between other dimensions of network ties and a range of entrepreneurs' experience characteristics on resource acquisition.Practical implicationsEntrepreneurs are provided with effective strategies to make use of their ventures' network ties and their personal accumulated experience in the process of obtaining resources.Originality/valueThe findings enrich the entrepreneurship literature by providing a more nuanced understanding of how and when new ventures' industry ties and entrepreneurs' employment experience together influence resource acquisition.

Abstract:Social entrepreneurship, as a way for enterprises to fulfill social responsibility, is becoming one of the key means to reconcile social contradictions in China. In the field of social entrepreneurship as entrepreneurship research focus in the emerging background, such as type business start-ups face "vulnerable" new defects, social entrepreneurship, how to deal with scarce resources, social entrepreneurship resources come from and how to create such basic problems as what kind of results is still not well explain, related research is still in a state of "cumulative pieces". Therefore, this paper focuses on the social opportunity identification of commercial new ventures, and empirically analyzes the mechanism of social entrepreneurial opportunity identification and resource patchwork on their growth. The results demonstrate that finding social entrepreneurial opportunities is an important part of how resource collages can help social enterprises grow, and the entrepreneur's social network allows for the mediating effect of resource collage. The more sources of "strong relationships" in entrepreneurs' social networks, the stronger the impact of social entrepreneurial opportunity identification on the growth performance of commercial startups. Focusing on the field of corporate social entrepreneurship, our findings establish a complete chain of social entrepreneurship processes, from motivation to behavior to corporate sustainability. The findings confirm the mechanism by which social entrepreneurial opportunity identification and resource patchwork help to improve the growth performance of commercial new ventures, and also suggest that entrepreneurs' social networks can relieve entrepreneurs' dependence on external network construction to a certain extent.

Abstract:This study investigates the relationship between international young ventures' learning effort and performance in foreign markets, as well as its underlying contingencies, in the context of an emerging economy. We predict that international learning effort enhances international performance, that this effect is stronger at higher levels of market turbulence and intrafirm trust, and that the enabling role of trust for leveraging international learning effort into enhanced performance is particularly strong in turbulent markets. Results from a sample of 162 Chinese international young ventures support the hypotheses. The study has important implications for research on international entrepreneurship.

Abstract:What factors enable new ventures' business model design in the digital era? In this study, we examine the relationships between new ventures' external relationships (i.e., inter- and extra-industry relationships and government relationships), resource combination capability, and their business model designs (efficiency-centered and novelty-centered). We propose that new ventures' external relationship enable the ventures to plug into these networks and contribute to the ventures’ business model designs by providing various resources; and resource combination capability enables the ventures to combine various resources for their business model designs. Moreover, we argue that the relationships between external relationships and business model designs are mediated by resource combination capability. We collected and analyzed a data contained 312 manufacturing new ventures located in Pearl River Delta (in southern China), supporting these arguments. The findings of this study provide several important implications for business model research.

Abstract:While most studies argue that, relational embeddedness, one facet of social capital, facilitates the obtaining process of scarce resources, our study cautions that it may exert negative impacts. This study examines the underlying process about how shared cognition influences new business development. Results from a survey on entrepreneur social network in China demonstrate that strong ties bring decision-making constraints for entrepreneurs to bear, while trust helps to lessen such restriction. Additionally, shared cognition should not become a preferred standard for entrepreneurs in choosing their network members, because simply relying on the intermediate role of tie strength engenders dark sides. Implications for research as well as for practice are discussed.

Abstract:Entrepreneurial activities can stimulate the vitality of the market economy, promote the flow of production factors and the adjustment of industrial structure, and play an important role in the economic and social development of a country or region. However, the social capital of the entrepreneur is very important for the new venture to break through the congenital defect and industry barrier and get the chance of growth. The quantity and quality of social capital owned by entrepreneurs can promote the growth of start-ups, and it can also promote the growth of enterprises after improving the effect of identifying growth opportunities. This paper focuses on the relationship between the social capital of entrepreneurs and the growth of New Ventures and analyzes the relationship between the social capital of entrepreneurs, the recognition of growth opportunities, and the growth of new ventures with the growth opportunity as the intermediary variable, this paper analyzes the mechanism of the influence of entrepreneur social capital on the growth of new ventures, and constructs the theoretical model of “Entrepreneur social capital-recognition of growth opportunity-growth of new ventures”, this study considers the moderating effect of business environment dynamics on Growth Opportunity Identification and start-up growth. Through the test, we draw the following conclusions: first, the social capital of entrepreneurs has a positive impact on the growth of new ventures; second, the social capital of entrepreneurs has a positive impact on the identification of growth opportunities; Third, the growth opportunity recognition plays an intermediary role in the entrepreneur social capital to the new venture growth; fourth, the dynamic business environment plays a moderating role in the growth opportunity recognition and the new venture growth.

Abstract:Market orientation and innovation are important for economic growth. We examine market orientation, innovation radicalness, and propensity towards risk-taking in the unique context of China's transitional economy. Analysis of 235 responses from Chinese new ventures, created during the past eight years, suggests that innovation radicalness is affected by both responsive and proactive market orientation. Propensity towards risk-taking also positively affects innovation radicalness. Our results on responsive market orientation are counter to findings in Western contexts. Implications of the findings are useful to improve our understanding of innovation and entrepreneurship in transitional economies, particularly in the Chinese context.

Abstract:Identity transformation is of great importance to the technology commercialization of academic spin-offs and, more broadly, to entrepreneurial opportunity development. This importance may be attributed to individuals adhering to a specific role identity and conforming to relevant standards that might trigger resistance toward opportunity development. While extant literature has emphasized the importance of identity in predicting a venture’s strategic choice, many of the studies have overlooked the dynamic process of one’s role identity management and how identity work interacts with opportunity development. Through an inductive, qualitative study for 27 academic entrepreneurs in China, we highlight the differences of identity management approaches (i.e., decoupling, aggregating, deleting) in predicting one’s opportunity development strategies and how such strategies inversely affect one’s identity transformation. Our findings contribute to existing theory by uncovering that academic entrepreneurs’ capability to explore opportunity is not only constrained by the field-level institutional logic but also by their role identities.

Abstract:This study presents a dual strategic intent perspective, elucidating that international venturing by emerging economy private firms is prompted by exploiting firm-specific advantages, as well as circumventing market imperfection residuals embedded in home country economic transformation.Our analysis of 1,355 Chinese private enterprises shows that their ownership-specific advantages in areas such as corporate governance, inherited advantage from mergers and acquisitions of state-owned companies, and inward internationalization increase the level of outward internationalization. Market imperfection residuals, such as industry structure uncertainty, also propel the inclination for internationalization.Two types of international experiences, one possessed by entrepreneurs and the other by private firms they lead, are positively associated with the proclivity for international venturing. Their moderating effect on the link between some ownership-specific advantages and venturing is negative, suggesting a substitutive role of experience in interacting with ownership-specific advantages with the process of internationalization.

But only few kinds of new technology could be commercialized through the creation of new venture, which means that not all the new technology could be the entrepreneurial opportunity. It is suggested that, it depends on the technology characteristics and the technological environment as well as their well match that makes up of the entrepreneurial opportunity. Based on exiting literature, we divides technology characteristics and the technological environment into different categories and exploits their impact on the composing of new technology venture's entrepreneurial opportunity, meanwhile brings forward the entrepreneurial opportunity type.

Abstract:Adopting insights from a resource management perspective, this study investigates how entrepreneurs utilize their business ties to promote new venture growth. We propose a multiple mediator model in which different resource management processes (i.e., resource acquiring, resource bundling, and resource leveraging) act as critical mediating mechanisms. We undertook a two-stage survey design, and collected data during the period from 2013 to 2016. Drawing on a longitudinal sample of 229 new ventures in China, we tested the hypotheses through the optimal scaling regression (OSR) analysis. We find empirical support for the mediated effects of entrepreneurial business ties via resource bundling and resource leveraging to promote new venture growth. However, our results find the mediating effect of resource acquiring non-significant. These findings will deepen understanding of the role of entrepreneurial business ties in the new venture growth process and expand resource management perspective into the entrepreneurial field.

Abstract:The external environment faced by underdeveloped regions is becoming increasingly complex, and the importance of entrepreneurial activities is gradually becoming prominent. To stimulate entrepreneurial vitality in underdeveloped regions, entrepreneurial opportunities are of paramount importance. In the current research on opportunity co-creation and entrepreneurial action, there is often an oversight regarding the liability of newness and the unique characteristics of underdeveloped regions, which has resulted in a lack of specificity in interpreting the underlying mechanisms at play. In this study, based on the perspective of opportunity co-creation, a survey of 330 entrepreneurs is conducted in four underdeveloped regions in China, namely, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Chongqing, in an attempt to clarify the mechanism of opportunity co-creation in entrepreneurial action. The results show that opportunity co-creation not only has a direct positive impact on entrepreneurial action but also exerts an indirect positive effect through the mediating effect of opportunity belief. Additionally, regulatory focus plays a positive moderating role. Our study reveals that entrepreneurs in underdeveloped regions should be strict with their investors and partners to improve their belief in the chances of entrepreneurial success so as to efficiently co-create opportunities. Meanwhile, governments in underdeveloped regions should pay attention to creating a favorable entrepreneurial environment, actively building facilities that are conducive to entrepreneurial activities, and creating more entrepreneurial and employment opportunities to help entrepreneurial activities be carried out smoothly.
