Abstract:The spatiality of frontier-making goes beyond the more immediate relocation from ‘core’ to ‘periphery’, entailing a deep relational interaction between old and new areas. The article discusses the interdependence between centre and frontier and suggests that this happens through the ‘law of scarcity-abundance’. This ‘law’ synthesizes the general tendency to deal with mounting scarcity in central areas through the pledge of abundance at the frontier, although in practice new rounds of scarcity emerge in both areas due to the internal dynamics of capitalism (notably, the exploitation of society and the rest of nature). This means that the evolution of capitalist relations of production and reproduction is also, and fundamentally, based on accumulation through frontier-making. This conceptual framework is then applied to Brazil, a country largely shaped by territorial conquest and the expansion of internal economic frontiers. The State of Mato Grosso, in the southern tract of the Amazon, has been at the forefront of frontier-making for many centuries, recently accelerated by the spiralling growth of neoliberalized agribusiness. Mato Grosso may have now reached the centre of the national political and economic landscape because of the crucial importance of agribusiness exports, nonetheless it remains a frontier space where abundance and scarcity continue to jointly materialize. Frontier-making never ended in Mato Grosso, but remains a persistent necessity, much more than a simple contingency.

Abstract:The sub‐discipline of historical geography in Brazil, in contrast to the Anglophone and Francophone scholarship, often tends to be overlooked by the northern disciplinary history of this sub‐discipline. In Brazil, historical geography studies emerged in the 1980s as a result of personal initiatives. Nonetheless, in the last few years, distinct generations of Brazilian historical geographers have contributed to this sub‐discipline's promotion and recognition, mainly by diversifying their methodological approaches and research interests. Undoubtedly, developing transnational academic networks and collaborations represents a crucial contribution. This review provides an overview of the main Brazilian historical geographers engaged in studying past geographies. It delves into the central themes they address and also examines the academic conferences and research groups responsible for establishing institutional spaces to foster the practice of historical geography in Brazil in recent years. In doing so, the review calls for a 'polyphonic' approach to historical geography, urging the inclusion of southern sites of knowledge production and embracing a diverse scholarship beyond the English‐speaking community.

It closely examines Brazil's assertive efforts and the obstacles it encounters, focusing on its role within the context of Latin America. Utilizing macroeconomic data, the research reveals the barriers to Brazil's deeper integration into global supply chains and outlines novel strategies to enhance its global position. The findings highlight Brazil's capacity to significantly influence and advance the global economic framework, emphasizing its vital role in redefining the narrative on global supply chain engagement from a Latin American perspective.

Abstract:Abstract With the Brazilian military governments of the 1960s, systematic economic development of the Amazon began. Social and environmental concerns have entered Amazonian discourses and policies only since the 1990s. Since then, reports of threats to forests and indigenous people have alternated with reports of socio-economic progress and environmental achievements. These contradictions often arise from limited thematic, sectoral, temporal, or spatial perspectives, and lead to misinterpretation. Our paper offers a comprehensive picture of discourses, policies, and socio-environmental dynamics for the entire region over the last five decades. We distinguish eight historical policy phases, each of which had little effect on near-linear dynamics of demographic growth and land-use expansion, although some policies showed the potential to change the course of development. To prevent local, national, and international actors from continuing to assert harmful interests in the region, a coherent long-term commitment and change in the collective mindset are needed.

Abstract:Objective: To analyze the dynamics of variation in agricultural areas in the southwest of the Brazilian Amazon, specifically in the municipality of Sena Madureira, Acre. Theoretical framework: The expansion of agriculture in the Brazilian Amazon is the result of new logistics associated with new flow modes that allow the insertion of their activities in areas with potential for use and occupation. Method: Use of geotechnologies to analyze the dynamics of variation in areas and forms of use and occupation of agriculture, based on data generated by MapBiomas, with the aid of the ArcGis 10.8 software. Use of linear regression, including coefficient of determination and bivariate analysis. Results and conclusion: Exponential growth of cattle ranching with grassland areas reaching 222,413 hectares in 2022, expanding preferentially both in the vicinity of the margins of the BR 364 and AC 339 highways and in the urban perimeter of Sena Madureira, while agriculture presented oscillatory amounts in hectares of area, suggesting its use for subsistence. The very strong relationship between forest and grassland variables with linear regression analysis, shows the growth of agricultural areas to the detriment of forest areas. The study made it possible to generate bases for understanding the lack of conciliation between economic growth and environmental preservation. Implications of the research: Generation of bases for understanding the relationship between agricultural economic growth and environmental preservation in the southwest of the Brazilian Amazon. Originality/value: The historical perspective concerning the comprehension of areas used for agricultural practices and the intersection with Amazonian environmental issues.

Abstract:We examine deforestation processes in Apuí, a deforestation hotspot in Brazil's state of Amazonas and present processes of land-use change on this Amazonian development frontier. Settlement projects attract agents whose clearing reflects land accumulation and the economic importance of deforestation. We used a mixed-method approach in the Rio Juma Settlement to examine colonization and deforestation trajectories for 35 years at three scales of analysis: the entire landscape, cohorts of settlement lots divided by occupation periods, and lots grouped by landholding size per household. All sizes of landholdings are deforesting much more than before, and current political and economic forces favoring the agribusiness sector foreshadow increasing rates of forest clearing for pasture establishment in Apuí. The area cleared per year over the 2013–2018 period in Apuí grew by a percentage more than twice the corresponding percentage for the Brazilian Amazon as a whole. With the national congress and presidential administration signaling impunity for illegal deforestation, wealthy actors, and groups are investing resources in land grabbing and land accumulation, with land speculation being a crucial deforestation factor. This paper is unique in providing causal explanations at the decision-maker's level on how deforestation trajectories are linked to economic and political events (period effects) at the larger scales, adding to the literature by showing that such effects were more important than aging and cohort effects as explanations for deforestation trajectories. Additional research is needed to deepen our understanding of relations between land speculation, illegal possession of public lands, and the expansion of agricultural frontiers in Amazonia.

Degraded grassland and the conflict of land use in protected areas of hotspot in Brazil

Abstract:The development process in Brazil has impacted the landscape over the years, causing, especially, changes in land cover. A critical topic in global studies on environmental issues. As a counterpoint to this process, the Brazilian State opted for the delimitation of protected natural spaces, with the argument of improving biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, human subsistence and the well-being of current and future generations. The article assesses changes in the biodiversity of a protected area, considered as a global biodiversity hotspot, in the Brazilian Cerrado. We used the environmental arguments associated with its creation and a 30-year time series analysis. That identified and quantified land uses, levels of landscape degradation and their environmental suitability in relation to permanent protection areas according to the Brazilian Forest Code. Forestry over 10 years (1987–1997) increased by 8%, but decreased to around 5% in subsequent periods (2007–2017). Degraded pasture areas decreased between periods of expansion of forestry. There was a reduction in the area occupied by pastures, which went from 39 to 31% in the period from 1987 to 1997, but increased by 6% in the following years (2007–2017). The results showed that the expansion of silviculture from 1987 to 1997 occurred in areas previously occupied by moderately degraded pastures, evidencing, on the other hand, an improvement in the quality of the pasture areas in the following period. In addition to forestry and pasture, there was also an expansion of irrigated agriculture in the region, as well as conflicts related to water scarcity. The study, in addition to investigating the conservation conditions of the vegetation cover in the Protected Area, can also be used as a reference in the evaluation and formulation of management plans and social coexistence strategies, which are still very limited in protected areas around the world.

Abstract:In Brazilian regional landscapes, the Cerrado has one of the richest flora among the savannas in the world, with a high level of endemism; however, many plant species are threatened with extinction as a consequence of spatio-temporal changes in land use and cover. This study aimed to analyze changes in land use and cover in the upper course of the Ceroula stream basin, located in the Cerrado of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, based on maps of land use and cover in 1985 and 2022, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), precipitation data, and fieldwork. The results indicated that in 1985, forest vegetation was replaced by pasture, and in 2022, in addition to pasture, there was the introduction of soybean monoculture with corn in the off-season, influenced by the international commodities market. These land use and cover alterations, without adequate management and in the absence of conservation practices, led to environmental impacts, such as accelerated linear erosive processes (rill, ravine, and gully). The results may help provide important insights into the dynamics of land use and cover, the consequences of the lack of conservation practices, and the environmental impacts in the Cerrado of Mato Grosso do Sul, contributing to better understanding of the environmental challenges faced in the region and the need to provide subsidies for the development of sustainable management strategies.

Abstract:Tropical forests play a critical role in the global carbon budget, and the Amazon region in South America has particular importance since it represents half the world’s rainforest area and is home to one-third of Earth’s species. In the recent past, parts of Brazilian Amazon faced high rates of deforestation, and this process has led to changes in the environment and society. Since the 1960s, strategies for the occupation of Brazilian Amazon have promoted land use and land cover change that led to deforesting of about 18 % of the original vegetation cover. The main drivers of changes in land use and land cover in the past 50 years have been infrastructure development, financial incentives to land occupation, agriculture and pasture. Deforestation has affected biodiversity, soil structure, hydrological regime and local climate, and, through a positive feedback, it is likely to be affecting regional climate beyond the Amazon basin. We provide an overview of the extent and dynamics of land use and land use change in Brazilian Amazon forest from 1960 to 2013 and discuss the environmental and social aspects related to the deforestation process.

Abstract:The present study aimed to analyze the concept of Environment Education (EE) as a transversal theme from the perspective of rural school teachers; understand the relationship between content and contextualization in the student’s daily life, establishing connections with meaningful learning in the vision of David Paul Ausubel and Paulo Freire; describe the spaces used by teachers and applied methodologies related to EE in the context of a rural school in Wanderlândia, state of Tocantins Brazil. We carried an exploratory qualitative research in the form of a case study, with the application of a questionnaire to teachers. The methodology was based on content analysis. The deficiency in physical and pedagogical structures are the main obstacles faced when implementing Environmental Education activities in rural schools.

Abstract:This paper investigates the relationship between socioeconomic development and deforestation in the Cerrado biome, mainly focusing on the current Brazilian agricultural frontier of Matopiba. More specifically, we search for spatial interactions, heterogeneity, and spatial clusters among the municipalities using the exploratory analysis of spatial data (ESDA). Due to the many possible socioeconomic variables related to deforestation decisions, we create a Socioeconomic Development Index (SDI) that synthesizes all possible influences using factorial analysis from multivariate statistics. We also grouped cluster analysis municipalities with dissimilar deforestation and economic development patterns. The results show that the biome’s economic development and deforestation are spatially concentrated and heterogeneous and are negatively associated for the majority of Cerrado municipalities both in the spatial and cluster analysis, indicating that socioeconomic development may be an inhibitor of deforestation.

Abstract:What does the collaboration between the sociologist Florestan Fernandes, Aldo Solari, and the Latin American Institute of International Relations (ILARI), an organ of the Congress for Cultural Freedom, tell us about Fernandes's thinking between 1969 and 1972? The analysis of official ILARI documents and correspondence and texts by Fernandes and Solari suggests that this episode reveals Fernandes's concern with defending space for science on a continent marked by authoritarianism, thereby enabling a more nuanced understanding of his trajectory than one marked by two distinct phases, "reformist-academic" and "revolutionary-political." From ILARI's perspective, the partnership with Fernandes is revealed as critical in lending its actions intellectual legitimacy.

Abstract:The Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation), known by the acronym Embrapa, was established in 1972 under Brazil’s civilian-military dictatorship with the purpose of fostering agricultural modernization through the incorporation of the Green Revolution’s technology package, which included reliance on chemical inputs and high-yielding hybrid seeds and the mechanization of production. This article explores the context in which the agency was established and its scientific research agenda for Brazilian agriculture, while also examining both the influence of emerging environmentalist movements on discussions of the economic exploitation of the Amazon as well as the agency’s profile during the period of redemocratization in Brazil. The focus of our analysis is on the agency branch known as the Humid Tropics Agricultural Research Center (Centro de Pesquisa Agropecuária do Trópico Úmido, or CPATU), which opened in Belém, Pará, in 1975. The text follows the path of the CPATU through 1991, when it became the Eastern Amazon Agroforestry Research Center (Centro de Pesquisa Agroflorestal da Amazônia Oriental), now Embrapa Eastern Amazon (Embrapa Amazônia Oriental).

Abstract:The international protagonist of the Amazon has gained ground in Brazil's foreign policy, and the rate of deforestation in the region is one of the indicators of this importance. Due to the current focus on the Amazon, the federal government needs to justify the increase in deforestation and present plans to reduce these rates. Realizing the need to better understand the topic, this paper aims to analyze the foreign policy actions developed for the Amazon in the Lula (2003-2010) and Bolsonaro (2019-2022) governments, focusing on forest management, considering the beginning of historical monitoring, in 1988, made by the Amazon Deforestation Monitoring Program. In addition, the discussion also contemplates Brazil's performance within the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda. The results of this survey show that the lowest continuous rates of deforestation occurred between 2005 and 2011, while the highest deforestation rates were registered between 2019 to 2021.
Brazilian Foreign Policy Discourses and the Quest for Ontological Security

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, I analyse Brazilian foreign policy with special attention to change from Americanism to Globalism in the early 1960s. This article argues that such change happened amid a crisis of ontological security. Traditional diplomats were supporters of Americanism, whereas some intellectuals and politicians came up with Neutralism, an alternative foreign policy discourse. They upheld different narratives of Brazil’s identity, whether as a Western country or a bridge between developing nations and the West. I will argue that diplomats did solve such critical situation and regain control over Brazilian foreign policy’s formulation and implementation. They did so by deactivating parts of Neutralism and carving out Globalism, which would become the new hegemonic foreign policy discourse.
Protected areas and agricultural expansion: Biodiversity conservation versus economic growth in the Southeast of Brazil

Abstract:The conversion of natural ecosystems to agricultural land and urban areas plays a threat to the protected areas and the natural ecosystems conservation. The aim of this paper is to provide an analysis of the agricultural expansion and its impact on the landscape spatial and temporal patterns in a buffer zone of a protected area located in the transition zone between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The land use and land cover were mapped between 1971 and 2008 and landscape metrics were calculated to provide a spatiotemporal analysis of the forest structure and the expansion of the croplands. The results showed that the landscape patterns were affected by the economic cycles. The predominant crop surrounding the protected area is sugar cane, which increased by 39% during this period, followed by citrus. This landscape change is connected to the Brazilian oil crisis in 1973. The rapid expansion of sugar cane was largely driven by Brazil's biofuel program, the "Proálcool" (pro-alcohol), a project in 1975 that mixed ethanol with gas for automotive fuel. The forest loss occurred mainly between 1971 and 1988, decreasing the forest cover from 17% in 1971 to 12.7% in 2008. Most of the forest patches are smaller than 50 ha and has low connectivity. Throughout the years, the fragments in the buffer zone have become smaller and with an elongated shape, and the park has become isolated. This forest fragmentation process and the predominance of monoculture lands in the buffer zone threaten the protected areas, and can represent a barrier for these areas to provide the effective biodiversity conservation. The measures proposed are necessary to ensure the capability of this ecosystem to sustain its original biodiversity.

Abstract:The article both presents how, from the end of the 1980s onwards, native peoples have begun to occupy certain spaces of textual production and circulation that they had not previously occupied in the Brazilian cultural scene (for social, linguistic, and cultural reasons, but also political and juridical) and discusses how this process has provoked a vigorous movement of dilation of traditional textual and discursive borders in Western culture. Texts deriving from indigenous peoples in the sphere of academic discourse are, in general, bilingual, and are structured in ways that combine aspects of intellectual production with those of artistic creation. Moreover, they are also structured around a rather complex conception of the notion of authorship (considering that they are written by an author but represent the voice of their people). As examples, the article analyzes the case of Os cantos tradicionais Ye’kwana [Traditional Ye’kwana Chants], by the indigenous teacher and researcher Fernando Ye’kwana Gimenes, winner of the 2020/2021 edition of the Dirce Cortes Riedel Masters Dissertation Award by the Brazilian Association of Comparative Literature, as a typical example of the cultural phenomenon discussed. The traditional Ye’kwana chants present significant transgressions in relation to the traditional notions of narrative logic and the dominant forms of narration in the fields of literature and history. The awarding of this academic prize to an indigenous inhabitant of the forest, on the border between Brazil and Venezuela, by the largest association of comparative literature in Latin America, in addition to being an important act in political terms, demonstrates how urgent it is to rethink processes of global literary dissemination beyond the restricted frameworks configured by the logic of hegemonic cultures, which are based on closed divisions and hierarchies. With this, we intend to contribute to the process of including Amerindian texts in the repertoire of Comparative Literature and World Literature.
