Abstract:Multi-hydroxyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(POSS-OH)was successfully synthesized by thiol-ene click reaction between α-thioglycerol(TG)and octavinyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(OVPOSS)in the presence of 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile(AIBN)as the initiator.The hybrid fiber of polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA)and POSS-OH was fabricated through the static electrospinning of their solution.Moreover,the morphology and characterization of PMMA/POSS-OH hybrid fiber was investigated.Results showed that the increase of the dosage of POSS-OH could decrease the fiber diameter and beads size,enhance the hydrophobicity of hybrid fiber,and improve its thermal stability.

Abstract:Amphiphilic diblock copolymers consisting of linear or hyperbranched polyethylene (PE) and poly[oligo (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate] (POEGMA) were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiated by PE macroinitiators (MIs). The MIs contained an end-capping 2-bromoisobutyryl group per chain. Their linear and hyperbranched structures were first synthesized through a "living" polymerization of ethylene under pressure of 27.6 and 1 atm, respectively, using Pd-diimine catalyst, [(ArN=C(Me)-(Me)C=NAr)Pd(CH2)(3)C(O)O(CH2)(2)OC(O)C(CH3)(2)Br](+) SbF6- (Ar = 2,6-(iPr)(2)C6H3) (1). In the ATRP of OEGMA, the effect of solvent, ligand, and MI concentration on the block copolymer formation were studied. The macroinitiator and block copolymer samples were characterized by GPC, 1H NMR, and DSC measurements. All samples possessed well-defined topologies/structures with narrow molecular weight distributions and controlled lengths of PE and POEGMA blocks. The block structures were verified by an intrinsic viscosity study. Micelle formation and its temperature sensitivity were also analyzed by dynamic light scattering.

Abstract:Two asymmetrical, amphiphilic perylene derivatives, N -Decyl-perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracaboxylic-3,4-di(methoxyethoxyethyl)ester-9,10-imide ( D1E2 ) and N -(1-Decylundecyl)-perylene-3,4:9,10-tetracaboxylic-3,4-di(methoxyethoxyethyl)ester-9,10-imide ( D2E2 ), have been synthesized and characterized. These compounds contain one long hydrophobic chain on one end and two hydrophilic ethoxy chains on the other end. Self-assembly of these molecules in a variety of solvents has been demonstrated. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that these compounds self-assembled to various nanostructures in different solvents. The most well-defined structure was flexible nanoribbons obtained from D1E2 precipitation in methanol. The UV–vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of these compounds in solution and solid form are also reported. The self-assembled nanostructures have potential applications in optoelectronics.

Abstract:A novel poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV)/poly(p-phenylene ethynylene) (PPE) block-copolymer was synthesized by a cross-coupling polycondensation with Pd(PPh3)(2)CI2 and a phase-transfer catalyst., and was confirmed by H-1 NMR and IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The thermal, electrochemical, and photoluminescent properties of the new copolymer have been investigated. The incorporation of triple bonds into the cyano-substituted PPV (CN-PPV) backbone leads to higher oxidation and reduction potentials than poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV) and CN-PPV, potentially making the copolymer a good electron-transporting material for use in a light-emitting-diode device.

Abstract:Poly(1,5-naphthylene vinylene) (PNV) and its copolymers with poly(2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene) (MEH–PPV) were synthesized via a liquid–solid two-phase reaction. The liquid phase was a tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution of the monomers, 1,4-bis(bromomethyl)-2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)benzene (MOEHODCX) and 1,5-bis(bromomethyl) naphthalene (DBMN), and contained a certain amount of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as a phase transfer catalyst. The solid phase was potassium hydroxide particles with diameters smaller than 2mm. The structures of the polymers were studied by infrared and Raman spectroscopies. The solutions of the copolymers emitted green light. The UV–vis and photoluminescence spectral bands of the copolymers showed blue shifts with the increase in their PNV contents. A polymer light-emitting diode was fabricated with the copolymer prepared by copolymerization MOEHODCX and DBMN with feeding molar ratio of 1:1, and its luminescence efficiency was measured to be 0.069.

Abstract:Poly (2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV) has been prepared by a liquid/solid two-phase reaction. The liquid phase is tetrahydrofuran containing 1,4-bis(chloromethyl)-2-methoxyl-5-(2′-ethylhexyloxy) benzene as the monomer and a certain amount of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as phase transfer catalyst (PTC). The solid phase is potassium hydroxide particles with diameters smaller than 0.5 mm. Gelation was found in the polymerization processes. As a result, MEH-PPV is partly soluble because of its large molar mass. Soluble MEH-PPV was obtained by using bromomethylbenzene as retardant regent. The molar mass of soluble MEH-PPV was measured to be 6.4 × 104 g/mol. The Structure of polymer was identified by IR, Raman, UV/vis and PL spectra. A thin compact film of MEH-PPV can be formed by spin-coating and it emit a yellow light.

Abstract:The self-assembling ability of block copolymers offers an attractive strategy for the organization of pi-conjugated polymers. This article reports the synthesis of a coil-rod-coil triblock copolymer consisting of oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene) as the rodlike segment and polystyrene as the coil-like segment. The chemical structure of the afforded triblock copolymer has been fully characterized by various spectroscopic techniques such as NMR, Raman, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, ultraviolet-visible, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The small-angle neutron scattering and photophysical measurements indicate that this triblock copolymer exhibits unique solvatochromatic behaviors through the interplay of aggregation-induced pi-pi stacking and planarization of the conjugated backbone. Supramolecular gel nanostructures have been produced via the controlled assembly of the polymer into H-aggregates. It has been demonstrated that the use of the solvent composition to influence chain conformations and thus to manipulate the packing of the conjugated polymer blocks is important for achieving control in the assembly of conducting polymers and associated optical characteristics. Novel Route to Poly(p‐phenylene Vinylene) Polymers

Abstract:Poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), poly(2,5-dioctyl-p-phenylene vinylene) (PDOPPV), and poly [2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylenel (MEHPPV) were synthesized by a liquid-solid two-phase reaction. The liquid phase was tetrahydrofuran containing 1,4-bis(bromomethyl)benzene, 1,4-bis(chloromethyl)-2,5-dioctylbenzene, or 1,4-bis(chloromethyl)-2-methoxyl-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)benzene as the monomer and a certain amount of tetrabutylammonium bromide as a phase-transfer catalyst. The solid phase consisted of potassium hydroxide particles with diameters smaller than 2 mm. The experimental results demonstrated that the reaction conversions of PPV and PDOPPV were fairly high (similar to65%), but the conversion of MEHPPV was only 45%. Moreover, gelation was found in the polymerization processes. As a result, PPV was insoluble and PDOPPV and MEHPPV were partially soluble in the usual organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran and chloroform. Soluble PDOPPV and MEHPPV were obtained with chloromethylbenzene or bromomethylbenzene as a retardant regent. The molar mass of soluble PDOPPV was measured to be 2 X 10(4) g mol(-1), and that of MEHPPV was 6 X 10(4) g mol(-1). Abstract:Cooperative self-assembly of block copolymers with (in)organic precursors effectively generates ordered nanoporous films, but the porosity is typically limited by the need for a continuous (in)organic phase. Here, a network of homogeneous fibrous nanostructures (≈20 nm diameter cylinders) having high porosity (≈ 60%) is fabricated by cooperative self-assembly of a phenolic resin oligomer (resol) with a novel, nonfrustrated, ABC amphiphilic triblock copolymer template, poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(ethyl acrylate)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PEA-b-PS), via a thermally induced self-assembly process. Due to the high glass transition temperature (Tg) of the PS segments, the self-assembly behavior is kinetically hindered as a result of competing effects associated with the ordering of the self-assembled system and the cross-linking of resol that suppresses segmental mobility. The balance in these competing processes reproducibly yields a disordered fibril network with a uniform fibril diameter. This nonequilibrium morphology is dependent on the PEO-b-PEA-b-PS to resol ratio with an evolution from a relatively open fibrous structure to an apparent poorly ordered mixed lamellae-cylinder morphology. Pyrolysis of these former films at elevated temperatures yields a highly porous carbon film with the fibril morphology preserved through the carbonization process. These results illustrate a simple method to fabricate thin films and coatings with a well-defined fiber network that could be promising materials for energy and separation applications.

Abstract:Bulk quantities of microspheres have been successfully fabricated from the random poly (acrylonitrile-co-vinyl acetate) under shear-inducement through the one-step self-assembly of the copolymeric chains in DMF-H 2 O media. With the increase of the water content, the copolymeric chains start to aggregate and form the small particles with nanometer scale, then assemble together to form microspheres. Also, the shear inducement is important for the construction of the poly (acrylonitrile-co-vinyl acetate) microspheres, the size and morphology of which can be controlled by adjusting the stirring rate. The results in this study could inspire us to construct and develop more novel morphologic structure from familiar or traditional polymer systems. By virtue of the electronegative group (−CN) on their surfaces, these as-fabricated poly (acrylonitrile-co-vinyl acetate) microspheres are further modified readily with silver and polypyrrole nanoparticles to prepare two kinds of composites, which would have potential applications in a wide variety of areas such as wave absorbent, catalysis, analyte sensor, and so on.

Abstract:The precise preparation of hierarchical micelles is a fundamental challenge in modern materials science and chemistry. Herein, poly(di-n-hexylfluorene)-block-poly(3-tetraethylene glycol thiophene) (poly(1m-b-2n)) diblock copolymers and polyfluorene-block-polythiophene-block-poly(phenyl isocyanide) triblock copolymers were synthesized using a one-pot process via the sequential addition of corresponding monomers using a Ni(II) complex as a single catalyst for living/controlled polymerization. The crystallization-driven self-assembly of amphiphilic conjugated poly(1m-b-2n) led to the formation of nanofibers with controlled lengths and narrow dispersity. The block copolymers exhibited white, yellow, and red emissions in different self-assembly states. By using uniform poly(1m-b-2n) nanofibers as seeds, introducing the polyfluorene-block-polythiophene-block-poly(phenyl isocyanide) triblock polymer as a unimer in the seed growth process, and adjusting the structure of the poly(phenyl isocyanide) block and the polarity of self-assembly solvent, A-B-A triblock micelles, multiarm branched micelles, and raft micelles were prepared.

Abstract:With anodic alumina with an ordered nanopore array used as a template, poly[2‐metoxy‐5‐(2′‐ethyl‐hexyloxy)‐ p ‐phenylene vinylene] (MEH–PPV) was embedded into the nanopores, and then two‐dimensional arrays of light‐emitting nanopolymers were prepared. By the measurement and analysis of photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation spectra of the samples, it was demonstrated that the optical properties of the nano‐MEH–PPV arrays were obviously different from those of MEH–PPV films. The conformations of the MEH–PPV chains in the nanopores, films, and solutions and their effects on the optical properties were examined. It was determined experimentally that the conformations of the MEH–PPV chains in the solutions were maintained in the nano‐MEH–PPV arrays. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Self-organization of polymerizable bolaamphiphiles bearing diacetylene mesogenic group.

Abstract:We report herein the synthesis of a series of polymerizable bolaamphiphiles containing a diacetylene group and mesogenic unit and their self-organization behaviors in bulk and at interface. The polymerizable bolaamphiphiles are noted as DPDA-n, where n refers to the spacer length of alkyl chain. DPDA-10 with suitable spacer length can self-organize into stable cylindrical micellar nanostructures, and these nanostructures have preferred orientation regionally when adsorbed at the mica/water interface. It is confirmed that the micellar nanostructure of DPDA-10 can be polymerized both in the bulk solution and in the film by UV irradiation. The emission property of DPDA-10 after UV irradiation has been significantly enhanced in comparison to that before polymerization, which may be due to the extension of the conjugated system arising from the transformation of the diacetylene group into polydiacetylene upon polymerization. In addition, the self-organization of DPDA-n is dependent on the spacer length. DPDA-7 with a short spacer length forms an irregular flat sheet structure with many defects; DPDA-15 with a long spacer length forms rodlike micellar structures. Thus, this work may provide a new approach for designing and fabricating organic functional nanostructured materials.

Abstract:Poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) nanofibers were prepared via a polymerization induced self-assembly process with the assistance of methoxy polyethylene glycol (mPEG) for stability and dispersity. In the traditional process of the solution polycondensation of p-phenylenediamine (PPD) and terephthaloyl chloride (TPC), PPTA will aggregate and precipitate with the chain growth due to the liquid crystalline characteristic. The introduction of mPEG can control the aggregation degree of PPTA molecules and stabilize the formed aggregates, which drives the self-assembly of PPTA molecules and results in the formation of nanofibers. The obtained nanofibers specialized by the great length-diameter ratio were characterized in detail. The effects of mPEG addition on the formation and the performance of the fibers were all studied in the work. The nanofibers can disperse in variety of organic solvents and water. Moreover, the nanofibers can be deposited for the formation of thin films with excellent transparency and thermal stability, which has great potential applications such as the separator of lithium ion battery.

Abstract:Composite nanofibers have attracted increasing attention due to their applications in a variety of fields, such as biomedicine, nanoelectronic and drug delivery systems. Particularly, the introduction of customizable reactive segments to composite nanofibers is proven efficient to generate novel nanomaterials with extra functionalities. However, the preparation of reactive composite nanofibers unavoidably involves multiple-step and tedious manipulations. In addition, these nanofibers are generally prepared at high dilution, which restricts their potential applications. Herein, a new method of producing reactive composite nanofibers was reported through the polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) formulation of poly(phenoxyallene) (PPOA)-containing diblock copolymers. Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) block copolymerization of styrene and POA was chosen as a model reaction to explore the polymerization and PISA conditions. It was found that a chain transfer agent (CTA) consisting of C12H25S as Z segment and –COOH in R moiety allows for the preparation of well-defined double-bond-containing poly(styrene)-b-poly(phenoxyallene) (PS-b-PPOA), poly(methyl acrylate)-b-poly(phenoxyallene) (PMA-b-PPOA) and poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(phenoxyallene) (PMMA-b-PPOA) diblock copolymers with controlled molecular weights and narrow dispersities. Specifically, on the basis of as-prepared poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) macro-CTA, we demonstrated the in situ formation of unique composite nanoﬁbers of PEG-b-PPOA via PISA process in methanol. Our work provides a facile synthetic approach toward attractive one-dimensional composite nanofibers with controlled dimension and a capacity for post-functionalization.

Abstract:Protonation and deprotonation are the main methods for the preparation of aromatic polymer nanofibers, but there are problems such as a long preparation period. Herein, we introduce amide bonds into the polybenzoxazole (PBO) chains through molecular design and propose a time-saving method for the preparation of PBO nanofibers (PBONFs) by the hydrogen-bond- and shear-field-induced self-assembly. The amide bonds achieve solubilization of PBO in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) and enable the formation of strong hydrogen bonds between PBO chains. The PBO chains in the NMP solution are oriented under the shear field, then the oriented chains can be fixed by the hydrogen bonds during the solvent exchange between NMP and coagulation bath to form nanofibers with impressive properties. Notably, the preparation cycle of PBONFs is significantly shortened from 7 to 9 days to 1 h. We anticipate that this study will provide a new strategy for the preparation of aromatic polymer nanofibers with excellent mechanical properties and heat resistance.

Abstract:Iodine terminated poly(vinylidene fluoride) was prepared by iodine transfer emulsion polymerization using C6F13I as a chain transfer agent, and further employed to mediate the iodine transfer solution polymerizaton of N-vinylpyrrolidone to prepare amphiphilic poly(vinylidene fluoride)-b-poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVDF-b-PVP) block copolymers. The molecular and phase structures of PVDF-b-PVP copolymers were characterized by NMR, IR, XRD, DSC and AFM. It is confirmed that PVP block can be effectively inserted between PVDF block and terminated iodine. The order of PVDF chains in the block copolymers was decreased after the incorporation of PVP, resulting the formation of more γ phase PVDF crystals, and the decrease of crystallization temperature and crystallinity degree of PVDF. PVDF-b-PVP copolymers were microphase-separated with a domain size of about 20 nm, and exhibited better hydrophilicity than PVDF homopolymer.
